I recognize Charlie. I only know the connection back as far as Russell Bucholz, married Margaret Otto. Sons Niel D., Ken, Richard. Grandchildren Lynn, Gail, Dale. I would be the great grandaughter. We're all from Ann Arbor. My family came from Germany somewhere around the time you mentioned, which is based on them being "off the boat" as my dad said.

I come from a line of architects and plumbers from Ann Arbor that completed many of the buildings, so it's a good bet we're related.

I'm trying to find whatever records my grandparents left behind, but a lot of it got destroyed. I'll let you know if I find anything.

mbucholz@emich.edu

Re: Bucholtz, Buchholtz. Utica, NY

The 1850 Census of Utica, Oneida Co, NY lists George Bacholz, 47, born France, Wife Catherine b. France and children John, Margaret, Eilsa, Catherine, Adaline, Ann, Joseph, Jane, Christian & Clara all b. NY. Also in the household are Joseph Dicker, wife Clara, John & Joseph and Peter Dicker, 60, b. France & wife Ephene b. Germany. I believe the DECKERS are Catherine Bucholz parents & brother. Daughter Catherine married Francis Spor b. 1832, Forbach, Lorraine, France. They are in NY City in 1860. The 3 surviving of 5 children are in NYC in the succeding censuses 1870 - 1930. Sons George & Joseph married Catherine & Ellen Callahan, sisters of my GGrandmother. Daughter Mary married Charles Norman.

There is a John Bucholz, b. Baden, Chairmaker, in NYC in 1860, wife Eva b. Baden & children Elizabeth and Christian. I believe his birthplace is a mistake & should be NY. He is listed in NYC directories in 1861 & 1869.

Joseph Decker is in Booneville, Oneida Co, in 1860 & his son Joseph is in NYC in 1870.

BUCH(H)OLZ - Ann Arbor, MI

I am looking for decendants of Gottlieb BUCHHOLZ who emigrated from Berlin, Prussia abt. 1868/69, with wife Bertha Carolyn SCHMID, son Carl (a.k.a. Charles, Charlie)BUCHOLZ (he dropped an h), and daughter Bertha Mathilda Charlotte BUCHHOLZ.
The family spoke low-German so likely orginated from Prussia/Germany closest to the border with Holland. Gottlieb and Charlie were well-known (infamous?) builders of houses in the the Ann Arbor area and built all the houses on Buchholz Court. Charlie married Augusta (RICHTER?) in Ann Arbor in 1895, producing 3 daughters: Alta, Lela and unknown.
I am decended from Gottlieb through his daughter and my Gr. Grandmother, Bertha Mathilda Charlotte BUCHHOLZ, who married Richard Garibaldi Portwine about 1890 in Ann Arbor. Incidentally, I've been told that the Bertha Mathilda Charlotte combination of christian names has been handed down in the Buchholz family for many, many generations.

Bucholtz/Bucholz Surname

My Great grandmother was Mary Bucholz (married to John Joseph Soika in Poland about 1865) and she was born June, 1851 to her parents Antone Bucholz b.1809, and Mary Bucholz b. 1808. Both Mary and her parents were all born in Poland, tho I have yet to discover their exact village of origin. The family immigrated to the United States in about 1868-1870. Mary's parents both lived with Mary and her husband, so I am unsure as to whether she had sisters and brothers who may have immigrated at the same time. The above are all 4 buried in St. Paul, Minnesota. If you have any information that may connect our families, please email me at OYaYa@aol.com.

Searching for information on John W. Buchholz and
Mary Ode (Ohde/Loheit)....They were my great grandparents
who immigrated from Altkarin, Schwerin, Mecklenburg,
East Germany between 1850 and 1870. My great
grandfather, John W. Buchholz and all ten of
his brothers, were in the royal guard....I believe
that they served the Duke of Mecklenburg. John
and all of his brothers, except for two, left
Germany because of the military. They were tired
of being mercenaries and fighting foreign wars
for the German government.
My great grand parents were peasants and
in order to get to US, they signed on as indentured
servants for the Mumma and Wampler Nursery in
Cincinnati, Ohio....that nursery is still in
operation. After they had served their 7 years
indentureship, they were awarded 40 acres about
20 miles north of Cincinnati, Ohio at Red River,
Ohio....Would like to hear from anyone that has
information about this line of "Buchholz/Bucholz"
or related to either side of "Ode/Ohde/Loheit"....
My e-mail address is: meyer2@zdnetonebox.com
Dusty
