Weird! I said "For almost 40 years he was gone from US Census records."

However, he is found in the Boston City Directory in 1861, 1868, -71, -74. A Mrs. David Buck is found in 1876, 1882 and 1883. However, they don't show up in censuses.

The Revolutionary Lt David Buck is the grandfather of the David Whitmore Buck who was married to Lucy Divoll in Cambridge in 1842. Thanks for confirming my info. I am hoping for insight into where David Whitmore Buck was between 1849 and 1888. For almost 40 years he was gone from US Census records. He could have been on a ship, in a foreign country, etc. I know he died March 12, 1901.

My next step is to try to locate an obituary.

I am looking for David Whitmore Buck born 1822, who left his family Winchendon Massachusetts for the California Gold Rush. Not sure he ever got there, as there is no trace of him in later censuses. He shows back up in Cambridge Mass. in 1888. He was working as a janitor, so he didn't get rich. He died in 1901, and the death info indicates the right person. Does anyone have any idea where else to look for men in the years between 1848 and 1890's? Could he have been in jail or institutionalized?
If you are still looking for information about the Skopowski/Buck family, I have some. My husband Ken Buck, who died in September of 2008, at the age of 74 was descended from Paul and Stella Skopowski.

I have a sealed certificate of marriage from Holy Trinity Church certifying that Florian Skopowski (Buck), son of Paul and Stella (nee Wardzinski) and Anna Armatys were married on September 20, 1920.

I also have a certificate of birth and holy baptism from St. Stanislaus Kostka Polish Church for Florian Skopowski, son of Paul Skopowski and Stanislava Wardzinski.

Florian died from a head injury in December of 1939, leaving his widow, Anna, to raise his children Lorraine (16), Donald (10) and Kenneth (6) alone.

According to Ken, his family used Buck long before their name was legally changed. The decree, issued by the Circuit Court of Cook County shows their names were changed to Buck on April 7, 1947.

Karen Buck
Kbuck10@tampabay.rr.com
Looking for more infomation about David Whitmore Buck, born about 1823 in Massachusetts or Connecticut, son of David S. Buck and Hannah Whitmore. He married Lucy Anne Devoll on October 12, 1842 in Cambridge Massachusetts. They had four children. About 1849, he left for California. He may have been in New Orleans in the 1850 Census. I loose track of him until 1888, when he was back in Cambridge working as a janitor. He died in 1901 in Cambridge. I know he had two sons: George W. Buck and Charles A. Buck, living around Worcester, Massachusetts. Are there any descendants?

Re: Enoch Emanuel Buck

I also descend from Emanuel (Enoch)Buck through first wife Sarah Ryley, then Ezekiel Buck and Rachel Andrews through their son Enoch who married Mary Beebe.

A little about Emanuel Buck -- he had siblings Grace and probably Henry in New England, but his parents and further ancestry are unknown. He also had 3 wives -- Sarah Ryley m. about 1648, Mary Arnold married 17 April 1658 and Mary Kirby befire 1667.

Please see the mscheffler database on WorldConnect for the extensive work I have done for some 15 years on the New England Bucks. I have included notes from published genealogies and a variety of sources to support the conclusions I have to date.

I believe that Jonathan Buck who married Zerviah Covalt descends from John Buck and Deborah Hewes of Wethersfield, CT. Cornelius Harvey thinks John Buck and some of the other New England lines may be related, but no proof has been found to date. The Jonathan Buck line has a variety of people working on it to try to clear up some inconsistencies.

About the John Rogers and Elizabeth Buck connection in NJ, I would be interested in any details and documentation you would be willing to provide. This is not a family that I have heard of, nor have I seen it discussed by other New England Buck researchers. I am sure that there are several people reading the Buck message board and rootsweb list that would be interested.

Again.... names of your early ancestors would be helpful here, if you want to find other people who might tie into your lines. Your husbands side of the family, I notice, is not represented on your Ancestry.com tree, so there is really no way for us to know who they are unless you tell us who they are..... simply stating that a family lived in a particular area of the United States will give some clues as to their identity, but without names and dates it is nearly impossible to relate to them. Zuriah and Jonathan Buck were in North Carolina with their family for a short period during their migration from Pennsylvania... their son Elijah and his wife Nancy Ann Denton lived there as well. Their son, Henry Jackson Buck, was born during this time (10 August 1819) as were several other descendants of Zuriah and Jonathan.....

I am interested in that file, but I'm not completely sure there's a connection with my line. My Squire F. Buck served in that same regiment! It's just too coincidental to be coincidental, isn't it? Maybe they were cousins or something! Do you have any more info on him? I'll tell you one other "co-incidence" that makes me wonder. My Squire F. Buck's two middle names are precariously enough very Spanish sounding: Squire Fernando Decolio Buck! "Alonzo" sounds Spanish, doesn't it?

My father is Allan Everill Buck, of Wisconsin, of Ray John Buck, of Arthur William Buck, of Squire F.D. Buck (all of Wisc), of William Orrin Buck, of New York, of, I THINK, William Buck, of England.

Do you have any information?? Maybe we can both learn more!

Oh, My goodness! Yes! I just re-read some documents that a newly discovered relative mnamed Michael Allen (Grandson of Alta Emma BUCK Stratton, my Squire's sister) sent me; It shows that Squire F.D. Buck and Emma Aurilla Stratton had TWIN baby boys on Jan. 27th, 1867 in Warren, Washara Cty, Wisc, and the son named Oral Rachley Buck died at birth; The other twin was named OREN RACHLEY and he died March 13, 1867, in Newton, Marquette , Wisc.

ALSO.....My William Orrin Buck, born 1807 in NY or ME, had a son in Feb 11, 1848, that was named ORRIN A. BUCK (Don't know what that "A" is for!)

Too many co-incidences! If you write to my regular e-mail,
janeenrealtor@yahoo.com, I can give you all this stuff!

Awesome!
Here's my "conjecture:
I have been trying to figure out this
> connection with the
> Buck Fruit Co. of California(www.buckfoundation.org, run by
> Frank H. Buck III),
> and here is my supposition:
>
> William T. Buck (son of William O.) left at age 18 to go to
> California (This is from a hand written note by My Squire F. Buck's sister, Alta Emma Buck). IF he
> had a son named Leonard (@ 1851) (Buck Fruit Co., CA) at
> about the age 20, then
> Leonard had a son (@ 1871)named Frank H. Buck, and Frank
> had a son(@ 1891) he
> named after himself, Frank H. Buck, Jr, then the dates are
> approximately correct
> for this to be my Squire's brother's family! I am
> going to call the
> Buck Foundation on Monday and ask them if they know what
> the name of
> Leonard's dad was! Now, My Grandpa, Ray John Buck, had a brother named Frank H. Buck!
> The year of my G
> Uncle Frank's birth is 1906, and the year of William
> T's>Leonard's> two Frank H. Bucks are @1871
> and @1891 or so; WHICH
> WOULD THEN MEAN that Arthur named his son Frank H. Buck
> after his cousin's
> son!
>
> From the time I learned about the Buck Fruit Co., I always
> felt there was a
> connection; With your info about Leonard being in Wisc., I am more sure than ever that my "hunch" will eventually PROVE true!
>
Please feel free to write to me at janeenrealtor@yahoo.com

Emanuel Enoch Buck (as I have it recorded), is the 7th g-gfather in my line. His g-gdaughter Elizabeth m. John Rogers in Tom's river, NJ 1791. THAT is my line. I have info on the Buck line back to James Buck b. 1555 London, Eng. It's a bit sketchy to that point. I will be happy to share any info I have and compare it with what you have. My record shows Wm. Buck (son of James) m Margaret Neave b. 1585 Eng, d. 24 Jan 1657 MA. Emanuel m. Sarah DEMING (Riley) 1645 in CT. Ezekial Buck m. Rachel Andrews 18 Mar 1675 in Wethersfield, CT. I have it all in my tree, but all may not be sourced. I will contribute what I can.

The 1850, 1860, and 1870 census' show Leonard Buck was born in New York. I apparently wrote the wrong place of birth in the original post. Leonard Buck was in Mt. Pleasant, (Racine County), Wisconsin in the 1850 and 1860 census. He was in Missouri (Andrew County) in the 1870 census. He died March 7, 1913 in Andrew County, MO. There may be a connection between our Buck ancestors because my grandfather had a brother named Oran Ray Buck and it was a tradition of my Buck ancestors to name children after their ancestors.

In my search for the same I found that in the UK and in other European countries the Buck name is as common as Smith and Brown and the orgins are as varied, all virtually springing from the reference to the stag. Every country in Europe has this name, occationally exchangable with "Bock "instead, but all meaning the identical thing. the hereldic arms [device and colors assigned] belonged to one man, not a family, unless his heir [single] chose to adapt it for his own.
