??? Conklin Buckbee (father of Charles Jackson Buckbee 1833-1895)

I am trying to find out more information on [first name uncertain, poss. John] Conklin Buckbee, born in New York. May have gone by his middle name, Conklin. He was married to Catherine Jackson, who came over from England. I am very roughly guessing that he was born sometime around 1800. The following are notes about him passed down from my great-great-grandfather: "was tugboat captain Aspinwall Co. in New York later sec'y of company died when Fanny Buckbee Hitchcock his granddaughter was 7 (His was a large family some lived in Utica, Schenectady etc) married NYC-moved to Albany where three children born + returned to NYC." He was the father of Capt. Charles Jackson Buckbee, 1833-1895, who resided in New Haven, CT. Any information at all would be much appreciated.

Vicky,
I haven't used Ancestry.com much for my Buckbee Family genealogy, but I just took a look under the name Buckbee and found your message from 1999. I believe we've corresponded before; if not, I know I've tried to contact you some years ago. The Buckbee genealogy is not too fresh in my mind because I've been working on two other of my family lines the past couple of years. If you still need data on Alanson K. Buckbee and Esther Young, I have lots of it...the entire family line. I presented my Buckbee genealogy to the Chemung (Elmira) County Historical Society and gave them copyright privileges in an effort to share my extensive data, including biographies and photos. I had help from Vaughirene Buckbee Wainwright Taylor, who lives in Elmira; believe you already know of her. Anyway, if you need more data on the Buckbee Elmira family line, just let me know, and I'll send you the entire genealogy report.
Bob Johnston
aberdeen3@comcast.net
913 859-9430

John R. Buckbee, New York > California, Died 6/29/1873

John R. Buckbee

Mr. Buckbee’s first labors in Plumas county were at mining at Smith’s bar on the east branch of the north fork of Feather river. On the fourth of July, 1852, John delivered the oration at the celebration. He was a man of considerable native talent, with a fair education. He came from New York, where he had studied medicine, but never practiced in California, being engaged in mining. His legal attainments were first made known to the public some time in July, 1852, when he prosecuted the man Joshua for the murder of Bacon, before a miner’s court. In the spring of 1854 he took up his residence at Quincy, and turned his attention to the law, and was admitted to practice at the first session of the district court held in Plumas county in July, 1854. In the fall of that year he was elected district attorney, and held it till the spring of 1857, when he returned to New York, married, and emigrated to Wisconsin. In 1860 he came back to Quincy and resumed the practice of law. He also associated himself with Matt Lynch in the Plumas Standard, a democratic sheet. He was a strong advocate of the right of states to secede, until the war broke out, when he became a Douglas unionist. He ran for district attorney in the fall of 1861, and was defeated by P. O. Hundley. He was elected to the office in 1863 by a fusion of the Douglas democrats and the republicans, and was re-elected in 1865. Buckbee was retained by James H. Yeates in the lawsuit about the shrievalty which occurred at this time. S. J. Clark was the republican contestant for sheriff, and Buckbee’s advocacy of Yeates got him out of favor with the old-line republicans. The county court decided in Yeates’s favor, which decision in the supreme court first sustained and then reversed. Mr. Buckbee gave his whole time to politics. He took an active part in the senatorial fight between his relative, Cole, and Sargent, in which the latter was defeated. Buckbee was elected to the assembly in 1867, defeating John D. Goodwin, the democratic candidate. The Virginia and Oroville railroad act, in which Buckbee was concerned, proved the death-blow to his political existence in Plumas. He returned to his constituents to find the people fearfully indignant, and it was apprehended by some that he would be mobbed. It was some time before the public became sufficiently tranquil to listen to Buckbee in vindicating his course. In a short time he went to San Francisco and obtained a situation in the mint. A softening of the brain finally resulted in insanity, and he was taken to the asylum in February, 1873, where he died June 29, 1873.

SOURCE: Illustrated History of Plumas, Lassen & Sierra Counties, with California from 1513 to 1850. –
Fariss and Smith, San Francisco, 1882. p 182
Re: Buckbees in Orange CO., New York 1700s.

I got my information from my Grandfather Stanley Carter Vial. His family were great record keepers. In fact I was fortunate to get them all passed down to me. A lot of the records and letters, journals, scraps of paper can date to the late 1700s. At any rate the family kept the family tree records on most of the information that I have. Stanley Carter Vial's along with his Aunt Alice Mildred Vial took the records they had and typed them all down during the 1950s. This also included 3 different family trees with names. On the Ketchum tree is where I got the information on the Buckbees. Russell Buckbee Sr. (that I have) was born 1/28/1715 died: 9/2/1795. He married an unknown Marcywho was born 1/22/1724 died:9/2/1777. They had a daughter Ansenath born 4/14/1747 died:3/11/1813. I have found a brother named Russell while doiong my research, who was born in the Orange Co. area. These are the only siblings I have of this family so far. I have been researching that this family name may have been that of the "Bugbie/Bugby" of the Mass. The name is so close and in my research I have came across name changes in a lot of Family last names. If you know anymore or have corrections it would be appreciated.
I made a trip up to Orange County New York and was able to see the old homesteads (or where they were) and graves of my family in that area. Quite an interesting Historical area to see. Thanks Tedd Vial

Sorry - I haven't seen your posts til today. It turns out there are at least 2 Jesse Buckbees with pre 1800 births in Orange County NY. MY Jesse: no more info about that line available so far. If we're related, it's going to be thru the Josiah missing links I think - so at this point, I would have to say we have no links in common yet (we have no Israel's documented and my line is very heavy in repeated names). The other Jesse Buckbee was the son of Russel Buckbee of Orange County, b. 1780's if I remember correctly. The Russel Buckbee line is tied to the Buckbee line in Rockford, IL. There may be a connection there - they have a fairly well documented family history and you can probably find them online. At moment, our info is in disarray (lost a computer file and will have to go through printed documents) - let me know at adhaas@citcom.net if you want me to track down a contack with the Rockford bunch.

Good Huntin'!

Hi Kathy
It's been a long time since we were in contact with each other and also a very long time since I looked into any of this research. I came upon something interesting this evening when I did a "search" on the name JAMES H. BUCKBEE. There was someone with this name who lived in New York City in the late 1800's and made banjos. I wonder if that James H. Buckbee relates to the one we have been researching?
How are you coming along with your research?
Gloria

Ross, Do you have any information linking Samuel & Russel in Orange Co? Do you have any definitive information for exactly where in Orange Co Russel (and/or Samuel) actually lived or was buried - so we can narrow the land records searches and look for wills in the right place? Mom & I went up there last spring for several days but it seemed a dead end unless we get more info. Do you have any info on a Buckbee married to a Canfield around 1800?

I'll look (late August) to see - I think we have more info on the Rockford Buckbees.

The Jesse Buckbee that has been traced to my family line was born in 1786 and died in Rockford, IL. His father was Russell Jr. This comes from a history of Rockford, IL. I have been wondering about the Buckbees that went to WV. Are they brothers to Russell . . . or cousins. Stay in touch.

Thanks, Ross

Hi Gloria - It has been awhile. I have heard of the James Buckbee that made banjos but do not think that is the same person. I believe that James H. Buckbee (born 1831 NY), is the son of Ezra Buckbee of Sand Lake, Rensselaer Co., NY. I ordered James' Civil War NY muster record and it notes that he was born in Sand Lake. If you are interested in more of my research on this Sand Lake family, e-mail me at cathy@kuhlweb.com.

Hello, I am a descendant of Ezra Israel Buckbee b. 1820 who came from Duchess Co., NY This Ezra married a Nancy McKinney and I have some heirlooms from her. According to my records, this Ezra was son of a Jeremiah Buckbee,b. 1798 who also was son of a Jeremiah Buckbee, b. 1768 who was son of Israel Buckbee b. 1720 in England. I wonder if these Buckbees were related to those that went West.
My personal email david.ganfield@verizon.net
Would like to meet relatives.
David Ganfield

I am researching the Young family from Jefferson County, WV. The Young family had ties to either Baltimore, Md. or Washington, D.C., maybe both. I believe my uncle, Thomas Young was married to Thelma Buckbee, but I think this may have been her remarried name - I'm not sure. They are buried next to each other in the Edgehill Cemetery in Charles Town, WV. Thomas died in the 40's, I think. Susan

Reuben has a rather long statement on this family that was filed for James' pension record.

Does anyone know if there is a relationship between these Buckbee families of Oakland Co. MI and Sand Lake, Rensselaer Co. NY?

Tobias Buckbee (born about 1811 VT) who married 1st Roxana Adams before 1822 and married 2nd, Roxana's sister Naomia Adams. By his first marriage Tobias had one son, Josiah, born 1822 Sand Lake, Rensselaer County NY. By his second marriage he had Maria, Margaret and James. Tobias resided in Oakland Co., MI.

Tomkins was born 1810 (born NY noted from census), the son of James and Nancy Buckbee. He married 1st Mary Ann Johnson and had Sarah (born 1835), Tobias (born March 1837) Valleda (born 1843), Almeda (Born 1843). Tomkins married second Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Johnson, widow of Lorenzo T. Sperry. Sarah was the sister to Tomkins 1st wife Mary Ann. Tomkins resided in Oakland Co. MI.

George Buckbee/Bugbee found in the 1870 and 1880 Oakland Co., MI census. He was born about 1838 NY, and married Cordelia/Delia. Children Eddie born about 1864 NY, Willia born 1868 MI, and Maude born abt 1879.

Minerva S. Buckbeee (born abt 1822 NY), married Jacob Hummer abt 1843 in MI, and resided Brandon, Oakland Co., MI. Minerva's parents are noted as Ezra Buckbee and Sarah Stone.

There is an Ezra Buckbee (born 1786 NY), that resided in Sand Lake, Rensselaer County NY and died there in 1840. He married a Sarah. Ezra's father, Josiah Buckbee (born abt 1754 NY), Rev. War Vet, died 1839 Sand Lake. The only other children known of Josiah's are Maranda and Jane, who married Bailey brothers and died in Sand Lake. From census records, Josiah had more children of whom we do not know their names.

Josiah Buckbee (who married to Lydia Simons), was born in Sand Lake, Rensselaer County, NY, son of Tobias and Roxana (Adams) Buckbee. I have handwritten record of Jesse's household - Jesse Miles was Jesse's youngest son and known as "Miles". Josiah, Jesse's brother b. ca 1796, m. Margaret Canfield. Link to Josiah is in land records in VA. We believe Jesse & Josiah to be sons of Samuel Buckbee/Bugbee in Orange Co. but no documentation as yet. We're fairly sure from collateral info that his father was Samuel and we know that Josiah, b. ca 1796 and married to Margaret Canfield was Jesse's brother. We think this because Russel & Eliz. Buckbee had a son Jesse b. 1796 who is well documented in Rockford IL.

Her husband was Reuben Buckbee and I am in contact with a good source on her family line.

Sorry I was looking for wrong first names.

Judy

Tedd,

Thanks for sharing that information. Hearing that a family history has been handed down to generations, as your grandfather and aunt did, always seems better than a "cold" reference book.

Buckbee's are from my mother's side. I read with interest about your Ketchum line as that is a prominent family on my father's side from Long Island.

I have confirmed that Russell Jr. was a Revolutionary War soldier, but I have sent for his pension / military records yet. I have just started working on his wife's (Hannah Mapes) history. It seems to go back forever if FamilySearch historians are correct. Does your line go through Asenath?

For different spellings, I have seen Bugbee / Buckbee sometimes for my great grandmother, Eleanor, and her father, Jesse. Jesse died in Rockford, IL but was buried in NY.

Let's stay in touch. Again, thanks.

Ross

At rootsweb.com, there is a biography page for Jesse & Theodore Buckbee of Winnebago County, IL. One paragraph reads:

"John, the first of BUCKBEE family known in America, settled on Manhattan Island in the 17th century having come from England. The second generation from John brought the descent to Russell BUCKBEE, who gained fame as a lieutenant in the Revolution."

It is the only info that I have found on Russell Jr.'s grand-father. Your message identifies John's son, Russell, Sr. Could you tell me where you found your information on Russell, Sr.? My great-grandmother was Eleanor Buckbee who married John Ames.

Ross Bartow

I am searching for the Buckbee family in Orange Co., New York. Russell Buckbee B:1/28/1715 D:9/22/1795. I do know that he had at least 2 children, Russell Jr. and Asenath. Can anyone help with who his parents where. I do know that there may have been a change in the way the name might have been. Through my research with family names it is possible that the name was fisrt spelled Bugby or Bugie. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.
