I was wondering if anyone knows anything about John and A. L. Gilcrist listed with M. Buckhalter in the 1860 Census for Cass County, Texas.
I believe that the John may be my great grandfather john Gilchrist. I can not find anything about his siblings or parents. He was born in 1844 in Alabama and died in Texas in 1883. My grandfather was only 2 years old when he died so he didn't know much about him or his grandparents.
Thanks for any help that anyone might have.

The counties in GA that I found them in are Houston Cnty 1843 marriage, 1850 Randolph Cnty, then 1860 Alabama Dale Cnty, 1870 Quitman Cnty, GA, 1880 Thomas Cnty GA, 1885 Madison Cnty Fla. Families moved around then due to new territory opening up & Indian wars, etc.

The only name that was familiar was that of John, which is a pretty common name. I have a John Buckhalts (some census show Buckhalter & other spellings) who was a sibling of my Great, Great Grandfather Frank. Other siblings were Mary M., James J., Sarah J., Caroline, William H., Emily F., Martha A. All were born in the 1850's-1864 in GA. Their mother's name was Julia Ann and their Father was James (Jim) Buckhalts. Spellings & mistakes I've seen: Buchalter, Buckshalt, Buckalls, Buckhalts, and finally Buckhalt. You did not say what the birth years where for your family.
The 1870 LA Tangipahoa Parish shows pg. 138. at household 267:
WELCH James D. 58 farmer b. MS
Caroline 54 b. GA
William H. 24 b. LA
Edward E. 18
Nicholas 16
BUCKHALTER M. (f) 20 (mulatto) b. LA
Rosa A. 2 (mulatto) b. LA
Charles? J. 2/12 (mulatto) b. LA

There is one other BUCKHALTER in the census. He's at page 122 and is a 10 year old William, given as white, living in the household of a William SERVIS aged 79 b. GA.

I have been trying to identify who the BUCKHALTERs in the WELCH household may be. You mentioned Louisiana BUCKHALTERS so I thought I'd post here.

Juli

Would you
please send some info on this. I am very excited to hear
about it. I would love to take my 82 year old mother next year.
Her grandfather was Reddin Buckhalter.
Shirley Clark/Florida

Buckhalt Ga/Fla/Ala Update, 9 siblings found

Since my previous post I have been able to confirm this segment of the Buckhalt family:
Jim Buckhalt b abt1816 Ga, married Julia Johnson b abt
1823, NC, married Houston Cnty, Ga. 1843, lived in Ga., Ala., Ga. again, & then Fla. Jim died during the Civil War period, cause, date & place unknown, his last census 1860, Dale Cnty. Ala. The 1870 Quitman Cnty census shows Julia & children only. Date & place of Julia's death is still unknown.
Their children, all born in Ga, were:
Mary M. abt. 1843 (maybe married a Bellflower)
James Johnson 9Mar1948, married Sarah Jane Hubbard
this branch settled in Alabama & is confirmed by separate
research.
Sarah J. abt 1851, originally married a Renfrew, was single in 1870 & widowed by 1880.
Caroline abt 1853
William H. abt 1856 (possibly found on a 1900 Thomas Cnty,
Ga. census, married to Addie Hurst,)
Emily F. abt 1859
Martha A. abt 1859
John abt. 1861
Frank R. 5May1864, married Fannie Williamson, lived in
Thomas Cnty, Ga, Madison Cnty., Fl & died in
Okahumpka, Fl 1931.

If you are connected with this family, I would love to confirm what happened to the remainder of the family & swap research.
Thanks.
Carmen
Thanks for your response. I haven't run across those names so far. Our name is Buckhalt, but I have seen it in censuses as "Buckhalts, Buckhaltz, Buckhalter. My Great Grandfather was Frank Buckhalt, born in Ga. & his father was James Buckhalt from Georgia, married to a Julia. Some of the siblings settled in Ga., some in Alabama & eventually some in Florida, around the Madison Country Area. You may contact me by email if you wish at MeByGrace@aol.com.
Perhaps we may find some ties.
Carmen Buckhalt Lawson
