Christopher - Here's a direct descent of the Tippett Family (some info may be a bit inaccurate, as there is some discussion on the proper descent of the Tippett's from St Mary's Co, MD.
Philip I Tippett (b 1670 Eng, d 1706 St Mary's (SMC), MD), marr (possibly) Mary Suttle (b abt 1675)}; one of their sons was:
NOTE: Philip emigrated sometime in the early
1680's. He was prolific in children and had
many descendents.
William (Sr) Tippett (b abt 1705 SMC, d abt 1777 SMC), marr twice, 2nd wife abt 1735, Sarah Graves (b abt 1710). One of their sons was:
NOTE: William married first, Temperance - there
is much confusion as to what children were born
to which wife. Sarah was the dau of Thomas Graves
Thomas William Tippett (b abt 1748 SMC, d 1808 SMC). He may have married in 1767 Ann Stone (b abt 1750 in Fauquier Co, VA). One of their sons was:
NOTE: There is some discussion as to whether
Ann Stone was his wife.
John D (Sr) Tippett (b abt 1770 SMC, d 1830 SMC). In 1800, he married Susanna Hayden (b abt 1774 SMC, d abt 1830 SMC). She was the dau of Jonathan Hayden & Rebecca Tippett (dau of another John Tippett of PG Co., MD.) One of their sons was:
NOTE: Susanna was a descendent of the prolific
SMC Hayden family. John's brother, Benjamin,
marr Susann's sister, Eleanor Hayden.
In his will, Susanna's father bequeathed her
a divided parcel of land, Neale's Lot, among
her other siblings. In the War of 1812
John was in the DC Militia, Pvt Maj
King's Detachment. It may have been this John
who saw the British sailing up the Potomac and
rode to DC to warn the townspeople.
John D (Jr) Tippett (b abt 1812 SMC, d bef 1870 in Washington, DC). In 1831, he married Mary Ann Moody (b abt 1812 in Alexandria, VA, d aft 1870 in DC). She may have been the dau of William Moody & Zeziah Buckner. Little is known of her, except that she was a seamstress and when she died she was buried in Potter's Field in DC. One of their sons was:
NOTE: John Jr was a blacksmith in 1850 and lived
in Loudon Co, VA.
John Thomas Tippett (b 1833 in Alexandria, VA, d 1903 in DC). In 1857, he married Margaret Jane Bayliss (b 1841 in DC, d 1905 in DC). Margaret was the dau of Robert Bayliss and Susanne Woltz. One of their sons was:
NOTE: One family story is that when Margaret
was 15, she was being schooled at Georgetown
Visitation School and that they must have
met and fell in love. Supposedly, John
"abducted" Margaret from school and they eloped.
John was in the Army of the Potomac during the
Civil War, Pvt C E, 6th Battalion, DC Militia
Infantry. John was a carpenter.
William Bunif Tippett (b 1861 in VA, d 1928 in DC). In 1886, he married Antonia Bertha Hassler (b 1867 in NYC, d 1945 in DC). One of their sons was your grandfater,
NOTE: Your great-grandmother, Antonia was known
as "Granny Tippett." She was quite beloved by
her family and had a great sense of humor. She
was the dau of Rudolph Ferdinand Hasler (note
spellling difference) and Elise Bertha Schwartz.
Hasler was born in Zurich, Switz & Elise in Germ.
They emigrated to NYC, where he was a military
tailor, then moved shortly after their second
child, Alfred Andrew, to DC. He evidently mistreated
Alfred and he ran away to become an adventurer,
having mined gold in California, a ship's cook
on a ship to Russia (where he may have adopted
the Bolshevik philosophy), bought his own boat
but beached in on a sandbar, and may have bought
a ranch in Alaska. He supposedly died in a
San Bernadino convent. All of this was told to
me by my grandmother, Margaret, and if you mother
can verify or dispute any of this I'd love to
know.
Luther Alceinus Tippett
There are a number of stories about our ancestors (see brief notes above), but much of it is sketchy. I know absolutely nothing about William Bunif Tippett (hopefully your Mom might know). I tried to tweak my grandmother's (your Aunt Margaret) memory for years, but got little about him.
Also, I have several letters that Aunt Helen wrote to my mother during WWII.
I would love to hear from you or your mother on family information/stories. I am a bit sketchy on recent Brown family history. Please respond to my email address:
