I know who your Florence Townsend is. She is the daughter of Hugh Buckingham and Emily Edbrooke James. She has 7 sons.Edward, Wilfred ,Jim ,John, Arthur ,Ronald, George. Am I right? I have made contact a long time ago with Julian Townsend. Have a photo of Hugh and his family outside Lambscombe farmhouse in 1905
Hugh's brother Thomas was my grandfather. He emigrated to Australia.
I have quite a lot of Buckingham information if you are interested but would like you to contact me on ijfreshwater@bigpond.com

Hi;
Thanks to all of you for the information about John Buckingham.
I have just acquired an old shot gun of which I wanted to add to my collection of antiques. While I was admiring the gun, I noticed the name John Buckingham inscribed into the metal of the gun.
Please see the attached 3 photos of the gun.

I have found the bapt. info for my Thomas Buckingham in Filleigh, No. Devon, England. Son of Wm and Grace.
He did have a brother, John, but I don't know if that John came to the U.S. This John was baptised (or christened??) in 1814, per secondary source info on this fellow's web page (it is missing a sister...)
See Brian Hamman's family tree at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

It's a possibility...

I am researching John Buckingham who was a shoe maker in Racine Wisconsin in the mid to late 1840s. I am wondering if he is the brother of William Buckingham (father of Burford Jeakins Buckingham) or the brother or uncle of your Thomas.

Do you know if they are brothers? I would be interested in any information you have on their parents or when John arrived.

I am trying to trace the family of John's wife Sarah Mills Harris Buckingham and her first husband William Harris (also a shoe maker).

I am researching a Richard and Elizabeth Buckingham born in England, with a son named Digory who also had five children. He was born in 1784 in Cornwall. Married Elizabeth Haines from Cornwall. Does this fit with what you found about your Richard and Elizabeth? If so, I have an entire line of decent to share for your help. Thank you.

Martha Buckingham (Maryland)

So I'm finding that Martha Buckingham dropped out of the sky. I have Martha Buckingham m. Johnsea Wages and had several children. I have been able to trace Johnsea's family, but I keep dead ending with Martha. Records indicate that she was b 1798 in MD, and m. Johnsea in Baltimore. I believe her sister, Nancy, married Johnsea's brother Ephraim, but both Nancy and Martha seem to have arrived on the scene parent-less? I am assuming that they somehow fit in to the Maryland Buckingham line, but can't find the link. Any help would be appreciated.

My ancestor, Thomas Buckingham, was also a shoemaker in WI, and came over in 1840, on the ship Pontiac. He lived in Racine for a bit, but didn't have a brother Burford.
I tend to think many of those Wisconsin Buckinghams are from North Devon...

Have you found out more since 2005?? I have seen Burford B's in the various WI censuses over the years...
Thanks.

Anndora,
Gee. 9 years since this message--are you still out there? Did you find your Buckinghams?

I have located MY William Buckingham (b. abt 1788) family in Filleigh, N. Devon (west of N. and S. Moulton). Wife: Grace. At least 3 of his children migrated to Wisconsin WI 1840-1860. So this would be a few generations before your ancestors existed.

Just an update!

George Buckingham, Alfred Buckingham, Robert Buckingham

George Buckingham (dob 2/05/1883) is my great grandfather he married my great grandmother Winifred Louisa Tew~ story line follows:

I am trying to find more information about Winifred Louisa Tew (dob 10/31/1888), her sister Carolina Eliza Annie Tew and Florence Ada Victoria Tew. They also had a brother who died in WWI. There father was Frederick Tew and their mother was Annise Stokes.

I am the great grand daughter of Winifred. This is what little information I might know:

They were all born in England and Winifred and Florence Tew came to Edmondton/Alberta Canada. Carolina Tew remained in England. There may have been additional Tew siblings but we are currently unaware of them.

Florence Ada Victoria Tew moved to Canada from England shortly after her sister Winifred Louisa Tew and later married Jack Benbow and they had two childre, I believe were boys; Jack and Henry.

Winifred later married George Buckingham and they had two daugthers; Mary and Winifred. Later they moved to Seattle, Washington around the 1920's.

George Buckingham (my great grand father), also was born in England and after marrying my great grandmother Winifred Lousia Tew, moved to Canada, following his two older brothers; Alfred Buckingham and Robert Buckingham. He also had a sister, name unknown, that remained in England.

Robert Buckingham married a woman named Elizabeth and they had two children (boy/girl) and remained in Canada.

Alfred Buckingham eventually married but I am unsure of details. Alfred Buckingham left Canada and headed to California where he became a practicing Lutheran Minister/Pastor. He may actually have ministered in a Lutheran church in West Seattle, WA for a brief period of time between Canada and California.

Again, I am the great grand daughter of Winifred Louisa Tew and George Buckingham and the grand daughter of Mary Buckingham.

Any information would be so very greatly helpful.
(briefspace@hotmail.com)

Adding or selecting another name to go by does occur for a variety of reasons. I have seen it on extremely rare occasions.
1. The name selected is from someone who was a mentor or some other help and influence to the person.
2. The name is picked because their name is same as someone else that was involved in a crime, scandel or other problem.
3. The person wants a name that may have better recognition or association.
4. Simplifying or fitting in.

Lozina's mother, Rebecca (BUCKINGHAM) WATKINS was born in 1825, so this man would have had to be born in the early 1800's. I haven't been able to find any additional information on Rebecca or her family. Can anyone help? Thanks, Della

Yes, Rebecca's (Mrs. William WATKINS, married 18 Feb 1846 in Guernsey Co., OH) census records show her father born in Maryland and her mother born in Pennsylvania in one record and both born in Maryland in another. Knox Co., OH is a pretty good clue to follow. Thank you.

Hi Lewis

Thanks for your reply. I am wondering if I met you at the Buckingham reunion in Southland NZ 2006? This older and wiser gentleman lived in Sydney and I have been trying to visit him on my visits there to my daughter, but haven't managed to get any contact details.

Re the book - the one I have is the Norfolk/Suffolk collection of any connection with the name as a result of Henry's advertisement in the newspaper there - I am told. I don't know of any family trees, except our own, my grandfather came to NZ from Norfolk in 1879, and we do have the family traced back there into the 1700s.

If you think I can be any assistance to you, maybe we can email individually.

Dorothy

Hello,

I realize that your original post was back in 1999 however, I am trying to find information on my family background and I notice that you referenced a George Buckingham and would like to know more information that you might have found about him. Did he marry a Winifred Tew and did he ever travel to England or Seattle, Washington sometime during the 1920's? If so, this may fill in a big gap in my family history.

Thank you

Bokenham Pedigree from the Davy Manuscripts

In researching Henry Maudsley's book on the Buckingham/Bokenham/Buckenham family, I found that the most interesting references he made were to the Davy MSS, especially for the earlier references. David Elisha Davey was a Suffolk antiquarian and Botanist who lived 1769-1859.

I have since traced copies at the British Museum and have started transcribing the relevant sections. They are an assortment of pedigrees, full and extracted wills (many quite old) and a grab bag of inscriptions and references.

I thought that some here may like to see the pedigrees he derived from his research and have attached a copy of the larger one. I have copied it as strictly as I could - items in red are uncertain readings, grey are rubbed out but legible, and the arrangement was a s near as I could make it to the original.

He may not be right on all accounts, but I believe this is a very worthwhile source as a starting point for further research.

Lewis

P.S. I could not upload a pdf so have uploaded 4 TIFFs instead

I think the same. My family have a copy of the first book and it is a confusing, but very helpful resource for all things Bukenham/Bokenham etc.

Thankfully it is available on Ancestry in a searchable form which makes things a little easier at times.

But I am interested in any light you can shed on this second book.

Is it actual pedigrees that he has drawn up?

The other book is a tantalising colllection of anything remotely related to Bukenham etc. What I dearly hope is that this second book has some pedigrees actually drawn up, or some explanation of sources so that I can refer to them myself - especially "Davy's MS" and "Stevenson".

Do you know any more about these sources?

Lewis

George Buckingham, born 1849 OH, wife Clara, b.1857, lived Denver, CO.

I have five original Cabinet Card photographs of “George Buckingham” (2), his wife “Clara Buckingham” and daughter “Mary Blanche Buckingham” (2), one with her “sisters and friends”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photos were taken in Denver, CO in the era of 1895-1905.

I found the family of George Buckingham in the 1880, 1900 and 1910 censuses. In 1900 Denver, “G. H.” birthdate is Jun 1849 in OH. Wife Clara is July 1857 in IL. Daughter Blanch is Dec 1881. In 1880 Louisville (Boulder Co.) CO, G. H. is 30; Clara is 22; and daughter Rozeltha May is age 1. In the 1910 census for Inyo Co., CA, Rozeltha M. Johnson (husband Bertsil E.) was age 31, and living with them were George H. Buckingham (age 63) and wife Clara A. In daughter Mary Blanche Buckingham Higgins’s obituary (Billings, MT Dec 1947), it stated she was survived by a sister, Mrs. B. E. Johnson of Bishop, CA.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to George H. or Clara A.

I have two photographs of “Mary Blanche Buckingham”, one alone, and one with “sisters and friends” which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members.

I found Blanche in 1900 Denver census with parents: “G. H.” (birthdate Jun 1849 in OH); wife Clara (July 1857 in IL). Daughter Blanch has birthdate Dec 1881. I found her in 1910 and 1920 censuses for Denver living with husband Ralph Ritchie Higgins. In 1930, family lived in Billings, MT. Children were George H. Higgins (b. abt 1911) and Gladys I. Higgins (b. Jun 1904). Her obituary in Dec 1947 Billings, showed her date of birth 27 Dec 1882 at Louisville, CO, daughter of George and Clara, and says they moved to Denver when she was an infant. Only sister I found was Rozeltha May Johnson.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Mary B.
Hi-

I looked into this a little bit. The problem with the Buckinghams in this place and at this time is that you have a blend of New England Buckinghams and Maryland Buckinghams moving into the same area at the same time. Fortunately, the New England line is very well documented, and he does not seem to fit. Furthermore, a fellow researcher has posted on his website that your John Buckingham was born in Maryland, which seems likely. Now, as to John Buckinghams in that area at that time, the History of Knox County, Ohio documents a John Buckingham living in Morgan Township, in south-central Knox County in 1828. There's some good leads to start. Maryland has a lot of old records on-line.

Hello again--

I just looked over the census records for Maryland during the 1800. There was a John Buckingham jr. and sr. in Baltimore County during the early 1800s. The ages seem older than you believe would be the case. However, there are no other John Buckinghams in Maryland at the time (I focused mostly on 1820). However, they are not on line yet.
See http://www.us-census.org/states/maryland/b-md.htm.
If it were me, I would focus on Baltimore County knowing what we know. I bet John Jr. named his firstborn male John also. It IS a great name, after all! ;]

I would also keep an eye on future census additions to USGenWeb, particularly in Carroll County and Frederick County where there were larger congregations of Buckinghams.

Also, Regarding the History of Knox County I mentioned; the full text is online and searchable in Google Books. It mentions John's brother in law, that could provide a lead also.

Good luck--- the Maryland Buckinghams are very difficult and poorly documented, but are all related somehow.

Buckingham Family Role in the Settlement of the "Sufferers' Land"

I have started a blog at http://firelands.wordpress.com that tells the history of the founding of the town of Norwalk, Ohio in 1817 during the settlement of the Firelands or “Sufferers’ Land,” a part of the Western Reserve that was given to “Sufferers” burned out of their homes by the British during the Revolution. The story of one of the early settlers of the Firelands, Fanny Buckingham, daughter of Henry Buckingham and Harriet Talcott, is a major part of this history.

I post an episode of this history on my blog every Monday and will continue until November 2009. I have also posted a genealogy for the ancestors of Fanny Buckingham that was compiled by my great-grandmother and grandmother from 1910 to 1977. The Buckingham’s settled in New England in 1637. Fanny’s grandmother, Vienna Bradford, was a descendant of William Bradford, who came to Plymouth, Massachusetts on the Mayflower in 1620 and was the colony’s second governor.

My fondest wish is that people interested in the history of the Buckingham family will be entertained and informed by these postings and fill in gaps and correct inaccuracies in my research.

Thank you for your kind attention. I hope you visit my blog and enjoy my story of Fanny Buckingham and the settling of the “Sufferers’ Land.”
