Dear all,

I am descended from William and Betty Buckle of Nettleton. I have been looking at the descendents of Walter and his two wives Mary Bethel and Mary Gibbs. Happy to exchange information.

WILLIAM BUCKLE, Great V Grandfather

Son of Walter Buckle and Mary nee Bethel
Husband of Betty (Elizabeth) West
Father of Hester (Esther) Noad

Also Father of infant Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth and Mary

William Buckle was baptised in Nettleton Parish Church on 11th November 1740 the eldest son of Walter and Mary Buckle, Farmers of Nettleton, Wiltshire.

On 7th November 1769 William Buckel of Nettleton married Betty West of Nettleton in the parish church. William made his mark and Betty signed her name. The witnesses were Henry West who signed his name and Jane Raven who made her mark.

William and Betty (sometimes Elizabeth) had at least six daughters who were born between 1770 and 1789 and were baptised in Nettleton Parish Church. Their eldest daughter, Esther (Hester), seems to have had an illegitimate child in 1788. She later married Isaac Noad and both moved to Gloucestershire where they endured ill health and considerable poverty.

In 1773 Betty received a legacy of £30 from her father’s estate and William received £5 in 1786 from his father’s estate.

Betty Buckle was buried on 22nd March 1823 aged seventy-five-years and William Buckle was buried on 18th April 1824 aged eighty-four-years.

Their children were Great V Aunts and Uncles:

HESTER NOAD, Great IV Grandmother

Daughter of William Buckle and Betty (nee West)
Wife of Isaac Noad
Mother of James Noad

Also Mother of Thomas, Isaac and Henry

Hester the eldest daughter of William and Betty Buccle was baptised on 4th June 1770 at Nettleton.

There is an entry in the baptism register at Nettleton recording the baptism on 18th April 1790 of William the base born son of Hester Buckle, the child having been born on 27th December 1788. As yet I have found no further reference to this child.

Isaac Noad married Hester Buckle at Nettleton on 30th September 1793. He was described as being of West Kington and he made his mark in the register and she was described as of Nettleton and she too made her mark. The witnesses were James Clack who made his mark and Edith Bullock who signed the register.

They had four sons – Thomas, James, Isaac and Henry who were born between the years 1794 and 1803. By the year 1799 Isaac Noad and his family had moved to Leonard Stanley where their son Isaac was baptised on 3rd or 9th February 1800 and where they were in receipt of poor relief:

‘In the first half of 1799 Isaac Noad received seven shillings and sixpence and later a “Bush of flower” worth thirteen shillings. In the second half of the same year we find that he had one pound two shillings and a penny in “monies etc.”, two shillings and sixpence for his settlement examination and finally fourteen shillings and nine pence for “Removing his goods”. The last item tells its own sorry tale. Isaac and Hester Noad were very poor, they needed help but Leonard Stanley was under no obligation to give it.’

By October 1800 they had settled in Slimbridge where they were once again in receiving poor relief and this continued until at least 1823. Their third son, Isaac Noad, was buried at Slimbridge on 10th April 1802 and their youngest son, Henry Noad, was born there in 1803 and baptised at Slimbridge Parish Church on 7th August 1803.

Hester Noad was buried on 18th January 1829 in Slimbridge aged sixty-two-years.

SARAH BUCKLE, Great V Aunt

Sarah Buckle, daughter of William and Elizabeth, was baptised on 15th November 1772 at Nettleton

MARY BUCKLE, Infant Great V Aunt

Mary Buckle, daughter of William and Betty, was buried on 25th May 1779 at Nettleton

HANNAH BUCKLE, Great V Aunt

Hannah Buckle, daughter of William and Elizabeth, was baptised on 14th July 1782 at Nettleton.

ELIZABETH BUCKLE, Great V Aunt

Elizabeth Buckle, daughter of William and Elizabeth, was born on 25th December 1783 and baptised on 30th May 1784 at Nettleton.

MARY BUCKLE, Great V Aunt

Mary Buckle, daughter of William and Elizabeth, was born on 22nd February 1789, baptised on 2nd March 1789 at Nettleton.

Regards

Richard Barton
I've now got most (if not all) of the BUCKLE family baptisms, marriages and burials in my notes.... extracted from the Malmesbury, Wiltshire parish registers from the early 17th century to 1812.

This includes names similar to yours....
~ in particular it seems one of the first members of the family in Malmesbury is a Walter (alone with a number of Edwards, Josephs and so on!)

I'm attempting to prove a connection between Joseph BUCKLE of Malmesbury, baptised in 1772, and my ancestress, whose baptism in Deevon... I cannot find, but she is beleived to have been born in the same parish as where Joseph and his wife Sage are living (and die) in the 1850s.

~ thwarted... I might add... but some people on Genes Reunited who are claiming Nettleton families are deriving from Joseph of Malmesbury, without providing any reliable evidence. LOL!!!

Yorkshire is one of the largest counties. Suggest you try the Yorkshire list Rebecca or even Cumbria ,Westmorland is part of Cumbria now and is bordered by Yorkshire, Lancashire etc.so if there is not a Cumbria list West Yorkshire or West Ridings I would think, someone there local to the area would know more. There is some info here about Westmorland
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WES/
Says that parish records for Westmorland churches are held at Kendal which is in the Lake District as well as Bishops trnscripts but does say they should be available through LDS and parish registers are also available on Hugh Wallis site, which you are probably aware of, but there are a lot of towns in Westmorland but there is other useful information on this site I did find Buckles in Brough under Stainmore, there was Robert Bucle who had a father Christopher Bucle in 1584, but that's after Buckles moved south, whether there is link a generation or two back, maybe? but the Buckles were aleady using the spelling Buckle that's in the Visitation not Bucle but you never know they may have retained the old spelling up North a bit longer, Sir Cuthbert had a brother James and Christopher born after 1533, a Christopher Bucles had a James in 1577 and Robert in 1584,so that may be the link and if so Sir Cuttbert isn't his ancestor but they share an ancestor there was a Robert Bucle born to Robert Bucle in 1563 , then there was Robert Buckle born to Robert Buckle in 1640 , Cliburn also has Robert Buckle I also checked parishes wthin a 5 mile radius of Brough the only other was a Robert 1845 Warcup I have checked several other but not all yet there are so many and no luck so far with the family names. But Sir Cuthbert isn't mentioned under Brough on the parish records but like mpost place there would be a lt missing. I don't have a Christopher 1699 sorry I thought we had sorted this before think it must be a typo for 1629, I do have couple after 1711 but you would have those too

I will be in Yorkshire in July, and I am hoping to do some research. Do you have any suggestions on where I should begin?
Where are you getting your info on Christopher born in 1699?
Cuthbert (1533-1594)'s line of Christophers go as follows:
Sir Christopher , only son of Cuthbert, 1586-1660
Sir Christopher, 1629-1712
Christopher, esquire 1654-1706
Christopher, 1684-1759
Christopher 1711-1783
I am interested in your Christopher 1699?
Thank you.
Rebecca

That was long while ago, I was in touch with a member of Sir Cuthberts direct line family who gave me the known tree and also I've searched available parish registers looking for others since I have Buckles too. However not all parish records have survived, there is always a possibility that Robert and Cuthberts line shared an ancestors there are very few records before the 1500's, but nothing to indicate a descendancty from Cuthbert or his descendents no other Roberts either

It was only Royals and those what were high enough up or linked to them. There are hearth taxes and window taxes and wills if the estate was over a certain amount but for that you need someone to do hands on, some wills are held with Nat Archives.
Re: William John BUCKLE b.c.1866

Many thanks for your response.
In the past few months, with the release of the 1911 census and with London workhouse records going online at Ancestry, I have made considerable progress with solving the Buckle family mystery. Your information from the Great Longstone school records confirms my theories as to what happened and why they went "off the radar". I now have all the family members on the 1911 census and the death certificates for William John Buckle and Annie Jane Buckle (nee Richardson).
I have a pretty good picture of the subsequent lives of the three children and I am happy to share this with you. However, I have two uncles and an aunt still living for whom this is very personal and they would prefer that details of their parents lives are not aired on a public forum. I would therefore be grateful if you would contact me directly so that I can pass on information to you, including copies of certificates and photographs.
My email address is grenville@thefieldclan.me.uk
I shall put together a record of my research and email this to you.
If you happen to be in Derbyshire you will find the grave of my great uncle Charles Howard Buckle and his wife Amy (nee Oldfield) in the church yard of St. Ann's Church, Over Haddon. He remained in Derbyshire as a farmer and his farm [Bole Hill Farm, Bakewell] was sold for redevelopment after his death and is now holiday cottages.
[Go to www.bolehillfarm.co.uk]

In researching my own family history (Mellers), I found the three "adopted" Buckle children living with my great uncle, George Mellers (spelt Mellors in the census) and his wife Anne Eliza (nee Staniforth) at Barley Lees Farm, Great Longstone in 1901. I can find no family connection to the children.
Ethel Margery's birth certificate shows that she was born at 5, Cromwell House, Vauxhall Walk in the Registration District of Lambeth. Date of birth 11 August 1892. Her parents were William John Buckle and Annie Jane Buckle (nee Richardson). I have thoroughly searched the 1891 census and have been unable to find this address or the family.
Charles Howard's birth certificate gives his date of birth as 22 June 1890. Born at 30 Chester Street, Lambeth to the same parents. The 1891 census does not show the family at this address.
I have visited Great Longstone school. Their records show that 2 of the children were admitted in August 1900 and that they were from London District School,Hanwell. The school log has an entry dated September 6, 1900. "Admitted a girl, Ethel Buckle who is boarding in the village from Hanwell Union" (presumably the workhouse). The children must have settled as Charles is recorded in the school log as winning a prize in a painting competition. This appears to have been an annual county-wide competition. The children's leaving dates are:- Annie - August 1902 to domestic service; Charles - August 1903 - to farm work; Ethel August 1906 - to domestic service.
I am intrigued to know of the circumstances which lead to the children being admitted to the workhouse. I have not found any deaths of the parents, they seem to have disappeared. I do not know how the Mellers became aware of their need to be boarded out. I think a trip to London is called for to search the Metropolitan records.

We too have Buckle family from Ireland. Francis Buckle 1736-1782 was buried in Kildare. Two of his sons, William (d 1814) and Barry, were farmers in Edenderry; the other two, Samuel 1750-1813 and Francis 1765-1823, moved to Peterborough, England, and became merchants (both were brewers, although Samuel appears to have had several other irons in the fire - he left a wonderfully detailed will). Any relation to yours, do you think?
Hugh

William John BUCKLE b.c.1866

William John Buckle b. circa 1866 married Annie Jane Richardson on 19 April 1885 in Southwark, Surrey, England. They had 3 children - Annie Jane b.1887, Charles Howard b.1890 and Ethel Margery b.1892. At the time of their marriage in 1885 William was a Confectioner and his father, also William, was a Carman. Annie Jane's father John Richardson was a Potter. The family lived in Lambeth, London at least until 1892 when Ethel was born but I can find no trace on the Lambeth census for 1891.
On the 1901 census the 3 children are recorded as the "adopted" children of George and Annie Mellors and living at Barley Lees Farm, Great Longstone, Derbyshire. I can find no trace of the parents William & Annie Buckle at any time after 1892 when Ethel was born.
One branch of the family believe that William and Annie were divorced or seperated and that the children were sent away to avoid the scandal. A second branch believe the children were orphaned. I can find no relationship between the Buckle, Richardson and/or Mellor families.
Can anyone help to unravel this mystery please?

Re: Sir Cuthbert Buckle (Buckell)

I am afraid that I don't have any ancestor's of Sir Cuthbert Buckle but I and others are trying to establish a link between him and the Jockey, Francis (Frank) Buckle (1766-1832).

We believe that Frank claimed he was a descendant of a Lord Mayor of London, whom we assume to be Sir Cuthbert, and we have traced Frank's family back to his Greatgrandfather, Francis Buckle, who was buried at Newmarket, All Saints in 1725. There is no mention of this Buckle family at Newmarket prior to 1703 when a son (also Francis) was baptised in Newmarket, All Saints on 20th Oct. Although the parish records go back considerably further, there is no earlier mention of this Buckle family, so it is probable that they migrated here in the late 17C. The question then is, from where (and why)?
If the link to Sir Cuthbert is correct, then the answer is likely to be from Westmoreland and we have found a Francis Buckle, son of "Ralph Buckle junior", baptised in Grinton on 14 Feb 1668/69 at about the right age. Grinton is just a few miles east of Brough, the home of Sir Cuthbert.

Do you have a connection between Sir Cuthbert and the Buckles of Grinton? These Buckles appear in the Yorkshire Parish Register of 1640-1800. Hugh Buckle

Death of John A. Buckle 1903-1938

Terre Haute Tribune (Terre Haute, Indiana) Saturday 5 Nov 1938
Pedestrian Is Killed By Wire
Coming in contact with a high tension wire torn loose during the heavy wind and rain storm, John Buckle, 34 years old, resident of Martinsville, Ill. was almost instantly killed about 3 o'clock while walking on Cherry street between Second and Third streets. efforts to revive the man proved futile and he was taken to the Union hospital where he was pronounced dead. The wire striking the man was reported to have been carrying 2,300 volts.
Claude Martin, 1705 North Seventh street, assistant general foreman of the Public service Company, and E. Bruce Morris, 2410 Washington avenue, a lineman for the company, were passing along the street in an automobile just as the accident occurred and cut the wire loose.
While the two men rendered artificial respiration, a Gillis ambulance was called as was the fire department resuscitator. all efforts however proved futile and the resuscitator and Fireman Nicoson and Fessler sent to the hospital with the man.
surviving Buckle are the widow, Dorothy; a son, Gerald; one daughter Rita Mae both at home; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Shotts, of near Martinsville, and the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Buckle, also of near Martinsville [Illinois].

Thanks for the information it helps to put things together and I will continue with my search. The Buckles appear to have been a very large family and I have quite a lot of information on that side. It is the Burnhams that have proved more difficult. Do not seem to find ancestors prior to Edward born 1914. The census states he was born in Dinton but he is not in the parish register as being born there. Do you have any warlier infro.
Olive Goodall

Re: Sir Cuthbert Buckle (Buckell)

Robert Buckles, Sr., was born on May 15, 1702, in Yorkshire, England.Born to Sir Cuthbert Buckle, Robert was the younger brother of Christopher Buckle, born in 1699, and the grandson of Sir Christopher Buckle who died in July, 1594, while Lord Mayor of London. (No information is available on when the surname changed from Buckle to Buckles.) Robert Buckles left England for America in 1719 at age 17. As the second son of a wealth England landlord, Robert may have run away from home due the English tradition of giving the father's estate to the oldest son. Other Buckles family stories indicate that young Robert left England to avoid the military draft. The truth may have been a combination of both situations. There are many direct descendents living in the U.S. today. I am one of them. You can find all original notes at the West Sussex Record office: http://www.a2a.org.uk/
There were no Francis's in Sir Cuthberts line and as far as I am aware they never lived in Newmarket he had as far as records show only one son Christopher, I have Christopher's line they moved to Banstead Surrey in the 16th century and remainedithere until 19/20th century there his current direct descendents live in Sussex England.
Cuthbert left Westmorland in the 1500's, its more than possible he had siblings and cousins there but his direct male line never emigrated to America. Buckles was name found in many Part of UK and had different origins

Sir Cuthberts father was another Christopher no ida about his mother, very few records survive prior to the 1500's thanks partly to Henry VIIIfor that and of course late in the Civil War Cromwells men destoyed many church records, the Visitations were records of only of landed people I only have the Surrey ones that show Sir Cuthbert and Christopher at Banstead here is the link to Yorkshire but the Buckles are not mentioned in 1584, 1585, 1612 its possible they were only counted when Sir Cuthbert got his title but am not sureabut that
http://www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk/forums/archive/index.php/...
Grinton is about 38 miles from Westmorland

Re: Sir Cuthbert Buckle (Buckell)

Your info appears to be at odds from the known recorded family history in UK, Sir Cuthbert only had one son Sir Chrisopher boorn 1590 no Christophers born 1699 that is a matter of record, I have a copy of the Visitations 1530,1572 and 1623 for the Buckles family it only show son Christopher no other chldren at that stage and Sir Christophers then 2 children Judith and Frances.Sir Cuthbert did not marry until he came to London and if there was a 2nd son its doubtful that he would have been born in Yorkshire thats up north,

This is direct link to their family history papers lodged by the family with the Natinal Archives which gives the history
but they are actally kept in Sussex and some kept in Surrey there is still no mention of a Robert in the papers and there are no Roberts in subsequent family tree other than those that married into it.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=182-...

Can you tell me where the proof of a second son Robert exists I know there are stories cmeiong from the US but in the 4 years I have been researching the family in UK I have seen or found no proof they are connected. There were lot of Buckles in Yorkshire its quite common surname there probably came from buckle makers when they were first give surnames in the Norman times, not all the Buckles are from the same family. There are quite few Roberts around in the farming communities.

Sir Cuthbert did not marry until he lived in London, received his knighhood when in London, he was previouly a wine merchant, and he became a Sheriff in 1582 and an Alderman of London got his knighthood and became the Lord Mayor It appears that Christopher was born in London. The title died our with the 4th Sir Christopher in 1712, not all titles are for life,

It is doubtful whether a 2nd son if there was one would be born in Yorkshire. Sir Cuthebert had two brothers Christopher and James but have no other info on them, their fathers name was Christopher which makes me suspect the brother Christopher was the eldest as it was the custom to name first child after father and died leaving Cuthbert as the heir, but I have found no proof

Sir Cuthberts only son(1590-1680) Christopher bought property in Surrey in early 1600's Banstead, Surrey is in the south of England Banstead was up the road from where we lived and not far from London, he had three sons and 7 daughters, his eldest son , Cuthberts grandson was Christopher was 1612-1729
, the next Christopher was 1684-1759, he had 5 sons eldest was Christopher was 1711, youngest was Matthew
who became Sir Matthew in his own right, the papers then mainly deal with Sir Matthews carreer as a naval officer of some distinction and that branch the direct I believe still lives in Sussex
I have in the past been in direct contact with a member of the family since I have Buckle's of East Meon, where Sir Christopher(1629) married but not found a direct connection

The English family or that branch at least never changed their name to Buckles to my knowledge.

I know there are stories of Robert Buckle but have yet to see proof of any connection I have been researching the Buckle in England for about 4 years, there were a lot of Buckles on Yorkshire and found a few Roberts who were farmers
but nothing to connect them with Sir Cuthberts family it is always possible they are connected further back than Sir Cutbert
Irene
