hi daniel my surname is buckman. I have a son Daniel John. Doing family history we have traced Buckman John back to 1647 in Smarden in Kent. He was a witness to a Baptist wedding and signed his name in beautiful handwriting. We also have James Buckman as an ancestor around Bethersdon ,Kent.
A John Buckman kept Buckman Tavern in Lexington outside Boston at the start of the War of Indepedance in U.S.A.in 1755.

Sussanah P Buckman was the widow of James Buckman. She was born 1778 (not sure where but maybe Lewes) and came to Australia on 9th May 1829 on ship "Princess Royal" with her 4 children. Tabitha, Isabella, George and Hannah. My grandmother "Hannah" was born 1886 in Port Stephens NSW in 1886 and was named for this original Hannah.
Do you have any information on Buckman's from the Sussex area prior to 1778.

John Baptist Buckman

I have an interesting twist I am investigating on John Baptist Buckman,(born 1690, Lincolnshire, England died St. Mary's County, Maryland in 1743)and married Susanna Smith, (born 1692, Lincolnshire, England died St. Mary's County in 1793).

In the book "The beginnings of Maryland", by Mrs. Arthur Barneveld Bibbins, page 74, it states that in 1682 by "an enterprising merchant, John Buckman, brought in both a press and a printer, one William Nuthead, to Jamestown, Virginia.". William Nuthead was soon suppressed and he left for Maryland and setup his shop where he is in the early history of Maryland (and one of the first printers setup in the new world).

My investigations are in the "enterprising merchant" who sent him over here.

Has anyone followed this trail before??

Ann Drinker, wife of John B. Buckman, of St. Mary's County

Can someone give sources for the parentage of Ann Drinker (ca 1732-1793), wife of John Baptist Buckman II? I have seen on sites where she is shown as the daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth Drinker, with a brother Edward. The only immigrants I found meeting this criteria were on the ship Abigall/Abigail in 1635, a hundred years too early to be the family of the above Ann Drinker.
Thanks,
Linda J.

Hi Tracey,

I will contact you privately.

You will probably get the most info from a book called:

A Shepherd From Kent by Allison Brooks. This was a privately published book & is very hard to find second hand but depending on where you are you may be able to access it at a library (or through an Inter-Library Loan).

Chapter 3 is about Mary Ann & Jabez, & their descendants. It has biographical details & some photos.

Regards,
Deb.

Does this name ring a bell? I found his dogtag in an inert 37MM artillery shell that my Grandfather, George L. Carrier, brought home from WWI. The brass shell is engraved "VERDUN 1918," & inside I found an aluminum disc, 1-14" in dia. & 1/16" thick with (2) 3/16" holes drilled thru it. It is stamped:
"BUCKMAN. 80621. U.S.A. DONALD. W."
If anyone out there in Buckmanland is a relative, let me know.

descendants of Thomas Buckman b 1766 Hadley Castle Worcester

I am trying to link this Thomas Buckman with the Thomas Buckman who married Elizabeth Payne in 1785 Bath Somerset England. Then to link Thomas and Elizabeth to the rest of a family of Buckman's (mine) from Edward Buckman b 1796c Bath who married in 1823 to Elizabeth Rowland b 1786 (not known where). In the 1800s to 1901 there is only one family of Buckman's in the Bath records (ours). I have hit the proverbial brick wall with the ancestry of Edward. I know that most of the Buckman's originated in Sussex but found the entry for Thomas, Hadley Castle which might tie in with the right date. If there is anyone with a Buckman connection that might have had a stray Thomas who married in Bath 1785, I would dearly love to hear from you to help me tie the loose ends.
Ann

Hello Stewart

Eliza Jane Satterley is my g-g-aunt and she was born at Polwheverel, Cornwall. George Buckman is her 1st husband and Susan Buckman and Herbert Albert Buckman are 2 of their 4 children - the other 2 are John George Buckman b 1866 and Eliza Jane Buckman b 1868.

George Buckman was a bootmaker, and he died in 27 April 1877. He is buried in the Barbadoes Street Cemetery, Christchurch (without a headstone). I have no information on him other than what was on his death certificate - it states he was born at Hobarton, Tasmania, Australia, and he was born about 1843. No parents are mentioned.

I have done some research on him to try to establish whether he belonged to the other Buckman families in New Zealand at the time, and he did not.

There was a family at Nelson and they may have a German background. As well, there was a Buckman family in Marlborough and Canterbury (both South Island) who are related; and another around Halcombe (small rural community) in the North Island (possibly related to the Marlborough/Canterbury families)

Are you aware that there was a New Zealand coluratura soprano Rosina Buckman? A brief thumbnail biography of her is at
http://www.teara.govt.nz/1966/B/BuckmanRosina/BuckmanRosina/...

Regards

Anna

Hello Anna

Thanks for the information. My ggrandmother married in Christchurch NZ in 1883. I know she was born in Sussex and have found her in the 1871 UK census but have not found her in 1881. I suspect she may have travelled (alone or with a relative?) to NZ to visit family but I have not found a shipping record.

I would love to find a link to other NZ BUCKMANs.

Stewart

My g-grandmother married William Smith in Christchurch, NZ in 1883. While in NZ recently I discovered other Buckmans but have no idea if they belong to the same family. Would be grateful for any information about:
George Buckman m. Eliza Satterley (1866)
Susan Buckman (b. 1870; d. 1870)
Herbert Albert Buckman (b.1872; d. 1873)
George Buckman (b. abt 1843; d. 1877)
Mary Buckman (b. abt 1805; d. 1875)
Judy:

My Harriet Buckman was born in Hartfield in 1840, but did not emigrate, however if you let me have your email address I will send you what I have. I live about six miles from Hartfield.

Regards,

Marilyn
