Moses was born on Nov. 24, 1810 at Norridgewock, Somerset County, Maine. He was a son of Moses and Olive (Holden) Bucknam. Moses was married at Solon, Somerset County on May 2, 1833 to Abigail Snell, a daughter of Joseph L. and Elizabeth (Bailey) Snell. They had seven children, all born at Somerset County. This Moses removed with his family about 1851 and settled at Waupaca, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Moses served as a Private with Co. A, 8th Regt., Wisconsin Volunteers.
