Good Morning, Cousin. My name is William Ward Warder (Bill to you). "Aunt Dorothy" Doster Wetherill married my uncle Giles Wetherill (my mother's older brother . . . I have tons of wonderful memories of your grandmother if you are interested. My mother was Anita Wetherill (Mrs George Buckley Warder Jr. My brother "Bucky" (GBW IIII), my sister "Nitsie"(Anita Warder) and my younger sister "Willow" (Willoughby Christine Warder}and I spent all summer every summer on Upper Saranac Lake with as many of the family as could get there . . . I knew Frank (only slightly when he lived briefly at 1830 Rittenhouse Square during the war . . . he disappeared from the scene and lived with Aunt Dorothy in Denver in "Granny Doster's" mansion which I later visited once in 1956 but he wasn't there then. My first cousin "Sammy" (Uncle Giles and Aunt Dorothy's son and I spent many summers together as well. She was my favorite aunt when I was five . . . she smelled wonderful (used a Swedish tanning lotion called Skol . . . I can still remember the aroma as I type this . . . and she drank cases of Coke every week . . . and sneaked me sips when others weren't looking. She was a great cuddler! Would you like to know more? If so, email me at billwarder@knology.net. I live in Charleston, SC. Where are you?

Hi Jennie:

My personal e-mail is LLenkcub@aol.com and please feel free to use it at any time. The little research that I completed several years ago shows Robert Bucknell and Jane Ellen Veysey as being married in September of 1869. The 1881 census shows Robert and Jane as having two children in their household, Ellen J.(aged 11) and Bertie F. (aged 1). Missing is Cecil Richard V. who was born August 1875 which would make him 6 at the time. While the family was residing in Jacob Street, Gloucester at the time of the census, I believe Cecil was at that time living with an uncle at Ford farm in Knowstone, Devon as he is listed on the census for that location.

While I have no history of Ellen J. and Bertie F. I can fill in details on Cecil. I also found a war record of a Bucknell B. of the Welsh Regiment as having been killed in action in November 1917 in Cambrai, France. No other details are available to identify the soldier so I am left wondering if it was the same Bertie, son of Robert and Jane.

It's Mothers day over here so I have to get off the computer before my wife comes home from church!
Best regards - Rob
In reply to your questions, Bertie and Cecil don't feature on the Bucknell side I don't think, so it must be Jane Ellen's sibling. I haven't started her tree yet!

Penford is situated on the edge of the river Dart, and was still standing a few years ago. I will try to get to Witheridge this summer.
It's all so inriguing! I am also having difficulty locating the birth certificate of Robert himself. Maybe he was a Cosway all along! My father was brought up by him as my grandmother, Mary ann, farmed out all her boys to various relatives. My father, who is no longer alive, didn't ever recall his wife, Helen, nor any other wives except 'Auntie' Maud. Do you know who she is?!
I live in Beckenham, Kent, UK.

Regards

Jenny

Hi Rob!
I wondered if I could have your direct email as this is now very complicated, and a little disconcerting, to say the least. I have spent hours this week on the tree, and on Robert Bucknell in particular. It appears that he used an alias...Robert Cosway...at times, and has married also in 1872 to Helen Baker...the Helen that I have been searching for! She, Helen Bucknell, married him as Robert Cosway, and so I assume she would be Helen Cosway! This isn't bourne out by the 1881, 91 and 2001 census' though. Helen also used various alias'! , and I haven't yet tracked down her ancestry. I am informed that he did marry a 'Veysey', and in 1869, and so we had assumed it was Jane Ellen. There's a lot more to go into yet!

Kind regards,,
Jenny

Can anyone help with the maiden name of Helen who married Robert Bucknell (b 1850 from Taunton), and who lived in Witheridge? We had always been told that she was Jane Ellen Veysey, but this now seems unlikely. I can't find Helen and Roberts marriage, or her death. They had several children, Helen, Trissy, Mary ann (my grandmother), Gertrude, Dorothy, Robert.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jenny

Hi Jenny:
I'm at work at present so can't tell you much about my results so far. I have some documentation at home that I will look through and see if there is anything that may be of use to you. Unfortunately, I don't have any photographs but have other family members in the U.K. who may have something available - I will check with them. My grandfather, on my father's side, was Cecil Veysey Bucknell. He married my grandmother, Isabelle Winters, and they settled in Cardiff and had 5 children. I was also born in Cardiff but now live in the United States. I was not aware of Penford and have had no success locating it on Google Earth. Do you have a more specific location (street address etc.)? I do know that at least one census (1889?) shows Cecil as living at Ford Farm and, until relatively recently, the Ford Farm was still in the hands of a Bucknell.

If your Great Grandparents were Robert Bucknell and Jane Ellen Veysey, one of your Grandparents must have been a sibling of Cecil's - which one would it be?. Also, where are you located? I have a cousin in Cardiff, Jean, who is also beginning research on the Bucknell family tree so it would probably be a good idea to share research results.

Regards - Rob

I have often wondered why 'Helen' appears on the census' as his wife though, when Helen Bucknell and Jane Ellen Veysey were one and the same! Do you have any photographs of them? I have one or two, but they aren't good! You probably know that Penford is the name of the family home in Witheridge. I have only recently started doing this tree, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jenny

I have finaly sorted out the ancestry of Laura Jayne Bucknell Loyson. She is the daughter of William Rufus Babcock Bucknell(b.1847 d. March 5 1885) and Laura Jayne (b.May 2 1847). William Rufus is the son of William Robert Bucknell Jr.(b.Jan. 4,1811 d.March 5 1890) and Harriet M. Ashton (b. 1815 d. Oct. 8 1851). William Robert Bucknell Jr. is thus my G.G.G. grandfather by blood and my G.G. grandfather by marriage (Edith Bucknell & Samuel Price Wetherill son Giles Wetherill is my grandmother Dorthy Doster's second husband. Jean Loyson her first husband, son of Laura Jayne Loyson and Paul Emanuel Loyson, my direct grandfather).

I need to correct the lineage of Laura Jayne Bucknell Loyson (1871-1958). She can not be the daughter of William and Margaret Crozer since Margaret died 03-13-1870. Laura Layne was born after William married Emma Ward (m.1870) so Laura Jayne must be her first child.

Hi cousin. I believe my father knew yours. I remember as a child my Uncle Sam and my father talking about their aunt Edith (Edie) Ellis. I think they knew each other when my father lived in Rittenhouse Square in Philly when Giles and Dorothy were married and living there in the 30's. I am named after an uncle Peter but I don't remember who this is. Giles is actually my step grandfather but legally is my grandfather since Giles adopted my father as his son and changed his name to Wetherill. I have a family tree on another site only accessible to friends and family. If you want to e-mail me I will invite you to see it and add to it since you are a relative. I have compiled much info on the Wetherill's and Bucknell’s. I can also forward you contacts of other relatives. peterwetherill@hotmail.com

I have recently become interested in the Bucknell ancestry as my middle name is Bucknell. My Great great grandparents were William and Emma. Their 3rd daughter Edith married Samuel Price Wetherill, who had my grandmother Edith Louise Wetherill. She married David Rowland Ellis and had my father Peter Rowland Ellis. Emma of course was a titanic survivor and I've just finished reading a biography of her which I found fascinating, also helping tie all this together in my mind. I remember "Uncle Giles" vividly and recall my grandmother's fascinating stories of her grandmother, mother and brothers and sisters. Thanks for the info!

It appears from further research that he was definitely Eli, rather than Robert Eli, which is just the name which appears on his daughter, Eliza's wedding certificate. If anyone knows why this might be - did he disapprove of her wedding? Then I would love to know. As I say, will put up my tree just as soon as I have my software and have got the free membership. Sorry for the delay in this.

Hello everyone,
I appreciate I haven't got my tree up yet - apologies about that (it is available in full on Genes Reunited where you can find me under my maiden name of Alison Riley). It will be up as soon as my software comes through.

Anyhow, to get to the point, I am trying to find out more about my Great Great Grandfather, Robert Eli Bucknell (details above). I know he married a lady called Zilpah (b. c. 1846, Battersea) and that they had six children, including my Great Grandmother, Eliza Bucknell (b. 1879, Kilburn). But I don't know anything about his parentage or siblings, nor do I know his wife's maiden name or anything about her family. If anyone can help, I would be most grateful.

Many thanks,
Allie

Thanks, Miranda, for taking an interest in my research. I don't know if you caught on, but at the time I was confusing Sarah's husband William with their son William, of Bucknell Univ. Your information coincides with information that I gathered since posting my query. However, your mention of information regarding thier children, etc., brings another question. Do you have information regarding the Hopper connection? William, Jr., had a daughter Harriet Maria who married Harry Samuel Hopper. Perhaps we could share information. kajken49@yahoo.com
I know this is an old thread, but just thought I would put this out there for anyone interested.

The William Buckell mentioned here, as the son of Joseph Bucknell, and husband of Sarah Walker, and brother of George Bucknell, is directly my forth great grandfather.

I have come across a lot of old family papers, trees, and genealogical research compiled by the Bucknell line in my family. So what I'm saying is that I have a good amount of information about this branch of Bucknell's in the United States. If anyone is interested just let me know, I would be happy to share and see how and if our trees are linked.

I can trace out a number of branches, and have linked with the William who donated to the University, as well as the trumpeter, Thomas, who died at the Battle of Little Bighorn.

Thanks a bunch,

Miranda

Thomas J. Bucknell was born in 1849, died at age 26 on June 25th 1876 during the Battle of Little Bighorn. He was a trumpeter in C company, serving and dying with the brothers of G.A. Custer.

He was the son of Thomas M. Bucknell (born 1817), and Eliva "Olivia" A. Davis (born 1819). Brother of Laura, Newton, Elvin and Olivia. He was also the half brother of Charles, William, and Annie, by his father's second wife, Agnes Bovy.

I hope this information is helpful, even though this is an old post. I have a lot of information on the Bucknell Line up to the 1700's. :)

Ann Beaumont born abt 4 Jan 1797, died abt 7 Dec 1855 both married abt 8 Feb 1819 St George's Church, Doncaster.

Do you have any further information?
You also mention certificate of marriage. Where did you get this from?

Robert Bucknell Photo Studio Pentonville Road

I found a photo, in northern Georiga, of a man in his 30's. He is well dressed with high collars. The photograph is edged with red border. This is not normal. The studio is on 60 Pentonville Road. It does not say a state. When I googled, it came up with London England. Photographer was H. C. Turner. Studio was nearly opposite the reservoir. Hand written on the back is
"Robert Bucknell, Grandma's 1852 father." My assumption is the father was born in 1852.

If someone thinks this is thier photo, please let me know.

Mel Dove
