My family is from Gerlachov and change the spelling of our name from "Bucko" to "Butchko" when they arrived in the U.S. in 1923...which was common in order to maintain the proper pronunciation. Our family settled in Shenendoah, PA.

Hello! I recently got interested in genealogy, and although your original message was written a couple of years ago, I thought I might respond.

My grandmother, Helen Bucsko, was born in 1902, in Michalovce in what would now be Slovakia. Her father's name was John, and she was thought to have had a sister that stayed behind in Michalovce. Helen emigrated to the United States of America in 1925, and married John Gelatko.

I was wondering if you could help me, or give me advice on how to find out more information about Helen Bucsko's family.

Thank you very much!!!!!!!
Marianne Baker

Louis George Bucko

Still seeking additional on this Bucko family. To summarize what we have:

Mother was Mary unknown. She married John Bucko in Hungary. Prior to this marriage, Mary had a son, Louis George Bucko, b. 1901 in Shalgo, Tar'yan, Hungary. Whether Louis was formally adopted is not known. Louis came with his parents to the States - Chicago, IL - in 1906, lived there {south side} until 16 when he ran away and joined the navy. John and Mary had a small store on Blueberry St./Ave. about where the Dan Ryan Expressway now runs. After his navy stint, Louis became a railroad detective for the Rock Island RR, married Margaret Fleming in Moline, IL.

Any further would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello, Mihaly -- Seems most of the Bucko {and variations} messages feel they have Polish or Czech ancestors. Louis George Bucko, however, was - so I'm told - born in Shalgo, Tar'yan, Hungary in roughly 1920, and sometime later came to the US. Don't know his wife's name, but do know they had several children including a Michael Bucko born 1945. Any chance at all you would know anything aboout Louis George and family? Anything would be appreciated - many thanks.

My great-grandmother, Maria Bucko, Born December 1, 1889 in Austria-Hungary. Her father was John Bucko and her mother was Susan Kuexar. Maria Bucko married George Maxim. She passed away September 23, 1974 in Pittsburg, Pennsyvania. I don't know if she & my great-grandfather, George Maxim were married or single when either of them arrived in United States. On my grandmothers birth certificate "1911" Bucko was changed to Butchko (I believe americanized version). Later, in their life together Maxim became Maksim; sometime before my grandmother, their daughter married. My grandmother was born in Montana, year 1911, her sister was born in Chicago, Illinois around 1909. There was another sister born around 1913 (passed away as a baby). I'm told that George Maxim (Maksim) & family moved about a lot because of "bootlegging". Does this sound familar to anyone? Hope so!

I'm elated just to finally know the meaning of the name thank you so much Mihaly Bucsko, if I may tho ask why have I always been told the name originated from Czheckslovakia or was this just another dead end road that I hit and how if anyway can I trace my heritage to find living relatives throughout the world. Any replies are greatly appreciated & please do not hesistate to ask me any questions for I wish to research Bucsko til the day I pass THX

My name is Holly Bucko and my father is George S. Bucko. His father was George John Bucko and mother was Fay Nell Colllier Bucko, they have since passed away - 1985 and 1999 respectively. However, my dad is still alive and his sister, Sue Bell Bucko Moore is too. My father and I currently reside in Louisiana, as far as his sister, I do not know where she currently lives.
I know that my dad was born in Trenton, New Jersey then moved here at a very young age. My grandfather had sisters, but I am not sure of their names, although, I do know that his family came from Poland in the late 1800s-1900s.
If anyone has any more information, please e-mail me.
I know your post was written long ago, but thought I would respond anyway since you so kindly welcome inquiries regarding the Bucsko name.

My great grandparents were Joannes SEVCSIK and MARIA BUCSKO. They were married Nov. 25, 1872 in GERLACHOV (SARIS COUNTY) what is now SLOVAK REPUBLIC. They lived in house #34 there. They had 10 children all born in GERLACHOV, and I have all their birth certificates.MARIA was born Oct 12, 1851 in this same village. I have her birth certificate. Her parents were Andreas Pitrov and ANNA BUCSKO who also were married in this same village on Nov. 20, 1948. I have their marriage license. Andreas and ANNA had 11 children. And yes...I have all their birth certificates. My goodness ...a lot of children don't you think? ANNA's parents were MICHAEL BUCSKO and Susanna Kruchinya. Michael and Susanna were married Nov. 22, 1824. They had
two children.

Now that you read all this, does any of this sound familiar to you? Please let me know. Thank you!
Hello

I too am a Bucko. I dont know too much about my Bucko family, but my grandfather Jozeph Bucko was born in Poland. He and his wife, Anna, moved to England where they had my Uncle, also known as Jozeph. Then they moved to Flint, MI, I believe, and had my father, Morek and my Uncle Aleck. Unfortunately my father and grandfather died and I do not see the family too often, but I do know my grandmother and grandfather were escaping Poland due to WW2. (I believe they both were in work camps..my grandmother still has numbers on her arm). I also believe I still have family over in Poland. Anyone got any information?

Bucsko/Bucko of Jakubany, Slovakia

I've looked thru the 31 messages at this message board and saw mostly references to the Bucko name in Poland. I have done alot of research with the greek catholic church records of Jakubany in north eastern Slovakia about 10 miles south of the Polish border and just wanted to point out that there are 240 baptism entries in the 1772-1895 church records. A 3rd cousin's grandmother Anna Bucsko was born in New Jersey in 1903 but the record is listed in the Jakubany records as well in the 1895-1930 link. You can see the Jakubany church records online at: www.geocities.com/jakubanyrecords

I have Bucko in my tree. They are from Poland but not sure where. All I find is "russia Poland". I think they may be from the NE border area. They owned land and ran a farm. What names do you have? My grandmother was Alexandra Bucko with siblings named John, Alex, Stanley, Mildred, Victoria, Rose and maybe others. Her father was Francis and mother Anna Dziarnoski.

Bucko Name

Sorry, I misunderstood how to reply so I sent this as the person I was replying to (Patricia Bucko):

You wrote: "What is the meaning of Bucko? Is it a place name or could it describe an occupation?"
When I was in Czechoslovakia in 1978, I was told that the name derives from the word "buk", which means 'beech' (the tree) - it's related to the word "book" in English. The diminutive (meaning 'small beech'), for example, is "bucek" (there's a small 'v' over the 'c' in the word in Slovak, so it's pronounced 'buchek'). The name Bucko, then, is something like Beecher or Beechman in English. Bucko and its many varieties and extensions (Bucsko - Hungarian spelling, Buczko - Polish spelling, Buchko - Anglicized, Buczkowski - Polish with a couple endings, etc.) are pretty common surnames in Eastern Europe.

You wrote: "Was always told that he came from Yugoslavia, but not sure what part." Again, when I was over there in 1978 (studying Slovak in Bratislava in a summer program while in grad school), I met a guy from Yugoslavia who was an ethnic Slovak. The people at the school joked about how even with the similarities between Slovak and Serbo-Croatian, after 300 years the Slovak community in Yugoslavia still kept the Slovak language alive, using it at home and within their community, while we Americans lose it after only one generation. So I guess it's possible, maybe even probable, that the man in question came from Yugoslavia.

I've been married to a David Daniel Bucko for 27+ years, and just learned MORE about that name (by reading your message) than all other info I've been able to gather.
Thank you for answering so many of my questions! It's fascinating how the spelling pronunciation has changed.
What is the meaning of Bucko? Is it a place name or could it describe an occupation?
David's grandfather - who had the same first middle name - settled in West Virginia, then moved on to Ohio. Was always told that he came from Yugoslavia, but not sure what part. Probably emigrated to USA around 1900 - 1910. He wife (Anna?) had four (?) sons; Dan, John, George..and sorry, can't recall the other son's name.
Also there were two daughters: Helen and Olga. I don't have documentation; only old photos and what's been told to me. Would be happy to make connections with Buckos from this branch of tree.
pb

Reply to PRILEY re: John Bucko

This sounds a lot like my family, but it's unlikely in this case. Your John Bucko would be about my grandfather's age - he had the same name (as do my father I but with a different spelling). Here's why you're confused: the Slovak spelling of the name is Bucko, but with a small "v" over the letter "c", which makes it pronounced like the "ch" in English. In Hungarian the same sound is spelled "cs", hence the name Bucsko (not Buckso like you thought).

Back in the 1890s, that part of the world was called Austria-Hungary or the Austro-Hungarian empire. A lot of people learned to spell in Hungarian schools, particularly in the Slovak part of what was later Czechoslovakia. When they came to America to work in the coal mines steel mills of Pennsylvania, a lot of the people from over there said they were either Austrian or Hungarian because of the prejudice against Slavic people. So my guess is that your John Bucko (a common Slovak name), like my grandfather who was born about the same time and immigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1920s, probably spoke Slovak, Hungarian, and maybe some German. He may have come from what is now Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland or Ukraine, depending on the shifting boundaries over there.

Hope this helps - good luck!

After reading your email I think that our lineage may be connected. I don't know much about my family history but my great grandfather Stanley Bucko came over from Poland in the early 1900's, perhaps he was one of the 7 brothers. My grandfather's name was Walter Bucko who was born in 1914 in or near Pawtucket, RI. Please contact me by email if this information matches your own. I would be very interested in hearing what information you may have.

I am searching also for info on John, but his last name as we know was Buckso. We do not think this is the correct spelling because there is no buckso world wide. He came from Austria and spoke several languages,no English. He arrived here abt 1913 and lived with a uncle in Pa. He lived with us until he passed away a few years ago. We did not know his uncle or any relatives that he may have had because none of us understood his language well enough he was born 5/4/1898. If this information sounds familiar to you please let me know. thank you so much and good luck with your search. priley
