Buffalo Family tree

My name is David Buffalo and my grandfather was Douglas Buffalo from Brinkleyville, Halifax NC. He was birth date is listed around 1891. He married Mary T, last name unknown and unlisted.
When looking at the 1920 census their oldest child was age 15 years so it would seem he fathered this child at age 14. This leads me to believe either the birth date is off by a few years or something else.
Our family migrated to MD, NJ, NY, and MA. We recently became interested in tracing our roots but all of the aunts and uncles have died.
We haven't had much luck and became very flustered when we found the different spellings of the last name. It made us think Dougals' parents might have been slaves who were owned by the Buffaloe's and after the war deleted the "e". We also had heard through third and fourth parties that there is a connection to the indian tribe, Haliwa-Saponi Tribe, who populated the area. I've written to the tribal council but haven't receive a response and it's been over three months.
We're asking those more in the know than us beginners could give us some direction as to where to go from this point.

Thank you very much
David Buffalo
