I am not sure how to begin, so I will just say that it is just a blessing that I came to this page. I was looking up my fathers book. My father is Theodore Bufkin Jr, son of Theodore Bufkin Sr. We are here in Grand Rapids, MI. I was reading your posting and seen Frankie Mae Kelly and host more of my families name and began to cry, I truly wish that our families were more in touch with each other. Over the years it seems the family is distant and not as close as we should be since Big mama passed away (Alberta Bufkin) it has many years since she has passed and I miss her greatly, she is the one who held us together over the years during our annual family reunions. I would like to hear from you and we can find someway to pull our family together. Our reunions our the third week of August in South Bend, IN. It is mostly Bufkins here in Grand Rapids, MI.. Kellys and Pittmans are in Indiana, Goins in Ohio, some of the Pittman family is in Ohio as well. I believe I am not sure but me and my siblings are the third or second generation of the Bufkin Family. And Also my Uncle which is my Fathers brother is Uncle Rayvon Bufkin in South Bend, IN. It is so nice to know that more family is out there trying to reach us. I will check back in a few days, hope to hear from you. My name is Kimberly Bufkin. This is has made me so happy, our family really needs to be formed and united again and get back to being close like we all use to be.

I have a 26 page (front and back)publication(not a formal one!)entitled Bufkins of Mississippi. Francis L. Bufkin is my husband's 2nd great granduncle and Joel Bufkin is his 3rd great granduncle. I probably have more info on Francis L. than on Joel - found through the old hunt and peck method. I have some info on his Civil War service that was mostly gleaned from the Internet. We are planning a trip to Hazelhurst, Mississippi, very soon to visit the Antioch Baptist Church and Antioch Cemetery. Many Bufkins and Barlows (who intermarried) are still in the area. The land for the church and cemetery was given by William David Bufkin (1827-1880) and his wife, Susan Carlisle Bufkin. David was voted against secession before the Civil War but went on to serve with the south. Anyway, if anybody wants to contact me, perhaps I can determine what you are looking for and send you something to help in your search. Send any replies to lindamarrs@hotmail.com.

I'm looking for family information about Joel Bufkin, one of the son's of Josiah Bufkin. I have found that Joel Bufkin is listed in the 1830 US Census as having two daughters between the ages of 0 to 5. This is the only Bufkin that I can find with daughters that of that age. My gggrandmother was Sarah Ann Buffkin and is listed as being born in about 1826 which would be right for that age range. Does anyone related to Josiah and Joel Bufkin have info on Joel Bufkin's family?

Thank you for the quick reply. Could you tell me if your source for Martha Ann's death is your Bufkin family Bible or elsewhere?

I have seen the 1918 date before but have always been confused by it since her husband, Benjamin Franklin Grantham, remarried in 1897. I suppose Ben and Martha Ann could have gotten a divorce but I have never found any records of such. I also have not been able to locate her in the 1900 or 1910 census records. Would you - or anyone else who reads this - have any of this information?

Could you please check your Bufkin family bible for Martha Ann's death date and place? It could possibly be 1894 but I have never been able to confirm the date. Thank you for your help.

All the Bufkins I have been able to trace are from Mississippi, or Texas. You can go to www.rootsweb.com and find a bunch of names on the Bufkins. They are very helpful Francis L. Bufkin's name is among them, at the bottom it had a world connect, maybe this will help you. If I find anything I will post it.

Hi April,
I am a new researcher exploring my Bufkin ancestry. My great grandmother Polly Bufkin reportedly had a brother named Jack Bufkin. I'm wondering if the Jack Bufkin you referenced in your post is he? Do you happen to know any of the names of Jack's siblings? Polly married Will Jordan and lived in Newton, MS. Their eldest daughter Leila Jordan Denham is my maternal grandmother. I appreciate any info that you can provide.
--Bruce

April,
I am so sorry I lost touch with you. I'm a teacher and the last time we were communicating was right before the end of the year hustle and bustle. Anyway, after I got through that, I started summer school which is fast paced and very demanding, during which time my only uncle on my biological mom's side (also deceased) had a massive heart attack in June and died about two weeks ago. So we have had so much going on. We're just getting situated in our new school year now. So, I'm hoping things will slow down a bit. I do start grad school again on Wednesday. At any rate I do check my email more than ancestry.com So, if you'd like, you can email me some time and hopefully we can catch up. As I said, I am so sorry for taking so long to respond.

Hello Shondolyn

My grandfather (Theodore R. Bufkin, Jr.) confirmed that Theodore R. Bufkin, Sr. is the brother of Clifer, Clementine, Quinteen, Solie, Oneda, Berdell, Frizell, and Grover. Do you know of a sister they called Sugar?

I'm related to the Bufkins through my mom. My mom is Theodore R. Bufkin, Sr. oldest grandchild.

The two "out side" children you were referring to are Frankie May Kelly (Married name and deceased) and Charles Ray. Theodore Sr. married Alberta and she was previously married and borned two daughters that my great grandfather loved and raised as his own.

Theodore and Alberta had (1) Theodore R. Bufkin, Jr. (my grandfather. My mom's dad) (2) Mariam Bufkin-Goins (3) Lois Bufkin-Slaughter (4) Leonard Bufkin (5) Dorothy Bufkin-Pittman (6) China Bufkin-Curtis (7) Rayven Bufkin (8) Marvin Bufkin (deceased) (9) Thelma Bufkin-White (deceased). They also had two children that died young, Plez, died around the age of 8 or 9. Another child died at birth (not sure about the name).

So it looks as if, your father and my grandfather are first cousins. And, that will make you mine (smile).

Where are you? Do you have any more information about the offspring of Pearl (any of them)? Do you have pictures of any kind, especially of Pearl? My Grandfather has a picture of Grover. We just made contact with Bukins living in Detroit. Its a possibility they are the offspring of one of the sisters (I'm not sure yet). They're having a family reunion in Sept. so we plan to envade (smile).

I'm so excited to make contact with you and I hope we can continue to work together piecing the puzzle of our family.

Speak with you soon, Cousin.
Pearl Bufkin was my dad's grandfather. His daughter Clifer was my dad's mother.

I know that Pearl Bufkin's children were:
Quinteen (youngest), Solie (next oldest), Oneda, Cliffer, Clementine (my dad never knew her, because she had died).
Berdell, Frizell, Grover, Theodore. They knew him as Theodore

So Clifer was Theodore's sister.

Theodore is said to have two outside children that my dad does not know.
I'm recording this information for record, as I am talking to my father on the telephone. His name is Earsley Young, Sr.

So, that's all I know. I'm new at this geneology thing. So, I don't know how to piece everything together. I'm beginning to work on it though.

April, is the Bufkin family on your mother's side or father's side? Name and relationship?
