Andy,
Thank you for the email. My grandfather's first name was Andrew, and one of my dad's brothers is named Joseph. However, he went by Steve. He was the last of my dad's siblings, and he passed away in April. My family and I have searched on the Ellis Island site for any information, to no avail. Has anyone in your family ever mentioned that the name was originally spelled Bugaj or that there were 2 dots above the y?
Thank you again for your information.
Dana

greetings dana!
im aries bugay from the philippines. im an asian and was surprised that in poland there are people also having bugay as a surname.
no doubt, of course, that we are unrelated. it is just curious for the bugay surname here in the philippines is very uncommon, almost endemic to the Bataan peninsula.
we have not found out the ethymology of our surname here in the philippines.
there are already a handful of filipino bugays there in the US. they immigrated after WWII.
so long for now, if you ever find yourself in the Philippines, look for the bugay family, rizal street Morong Bataan

Bugay is a village next to the city of Miloslaw south of Poznan in Poland. In former times Bugay was a "Woywotschaft" (thats it in german), where several smaller villages belonged to (Gorzyce, Lipie, Kemblowo, Rudki, Chrustowo, Kocubiec ans some even smaller).

I hope that can help you.

Christian

I am a second generation Bugay. My Father, John, ( Jan - according to his birth certificate) was one of 11 children born to Julia Ruta Bugay and Andrew Bugay.
My information is a little different from that which we found on the Ellis Island webpage. ( dates and spellings.)
From what my father told me - His father and brother , Julius, came to America in 1906 from Poland. Their wives came in 1907. They settled in southwestern PA, as farmers and later , coal miners. They also had a sister , Frances and I believe Victoria- I never met her -. ibelieve that the sisters came in 1907, also.

Our family, the offspring of Julia and Andrew, are having a reunion at the home of one of my 1st cousins on Saturday, July 14, 2001.

As I am only 35, the youngest of my generation of which there are 23, and my father has been deceased for 18 years , some of my information is probably wrong.

However, after the reunion, I will be glad to email you with any further information that I may gain.
Sincerely,
Dana L. Bugay
