Wayne J.P. Killed; Auto Hits Bridge
Robert C. Buhler, Jr., city's 10 fatality; Car Split to Pieces
A Wayne Township Justice of the Peace, Robert C. Buhler, Jr., 24, was killed about 1:15 a.m. today when his car hit a bridge abutment and split into several pieces.
Investigating officers said Buhler, of 2309 Shady Brook De. was driving east on U.S. 30 at a fast clip, when his car struck the abutment near State Road 101, just north of Monroeville.
He was Fort Wayne's tenth traffic fatality of the year.
The car was shattered into a dozen pieces with some parts thrown 100 to 150 feet from the point of impact.
A sheriff's deputy said he had never seen a car so completely broken up.
Alone In The Car
Buhler, who was alone in the car, was thrown onto the highway as the main part of the auto rolled down an embankment into a creek bed, then burst into flames.
Lawmen said he apparently was killed instantly as the body was battered into a shapeless hulk.
Investigating were State Trooper Darrell Bauer and Sheroff's Deputies Bill Kaylor, Earl Howard and Robert Bender.
Buhler, a Republican, was elected a Wayne Township Justice if the Peace in the fall election of 1954. Previously, he had worked for his father, Atty. Robert A. Buhler, 1845 Alabama Ave.
A graduate of Howe Military School, Buhler was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the Moose Lodge, United Commercial Travelers, Issac Walton League, National Rifel Association and alumni of Howe Military School. He had served with the U. S. Navy.
Surviving, besides the father, are the widow, Edith; two daughters, Opal Lynn, 2, and Patricia Gail; 1; a grandfather, C. Russell Hoover, Fort Wayne, and a grandmother, Mre. Hazel Kerns, Fort Wayne.
The body is at the Tom Mungovan Funeral Home, where friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday, Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Trinity Episcopal Church, the Rev. George H. Wood officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
This does not mention his stepmother, Elsie. The grandparents may have been her parents.
Bob's wife Edith was my cousin.
I think Robert Sr. died within 2-3 years, in Fort Wayne. Elsie lived several more years. Haven't been able to locate death records for either one.
