Neil Buie, Christine McPherson, Marian Buie

I have seen two different family lines descending from a man named Neil (Lindsay) Buie and Christine McPherson.

One family line would be mine, where Neil Buie didn't have a middle name of Lindsay, and he possibly died in 1761, maybe. He's *probably* the "poor" Neil mentioned in the online book detailing Buie genealogy, "The Buie Family: Scotland to North America, Compiled By Dr. T. R. Buie and Scott Buie, 1983". The one who only had a few shillings and a handful of possessions to pass to his children in his will http://chuggett.homestead.com/NCBuie2.html. This Neil & Christine had, among other children, a daughter named Marian Buie who married William Johnson.

The other family line has a Neil Lindsay Buie married to a Christine McPherson. That Neill dies in 1739, and the children this Neill has with Christine is different than the children of "my" Neill, although there is also shown a Marian Buie, same approximate birth years as "mine".

Both sets of Neills & Christines are from Jura, Scotland. As are both Marians. Both sets of families settled in the same area of North Carolina.

I'm curious about this. Both families so similar, yet different. While I know the Scottish at that time had a pretty definied first-name naming pattern for their children, it does seem a bit much of a coincidence that two Neil Buies and two Christine McPhersons, of similar time periods and in the same geographical area, got married, had a daughter of the same name, came to America around the same time and settled in the same area.

Thoughts? Anyone from these families with any research to share?

The names Naomi and Benji don't fit any that I know of, but there was a Bobby Luffman in the Wilkes County, NC area who did genealogy. We have a website that might help, or not! Its at: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~luffman/luffmanhome....
HIS NAME IS ROBERT (BOBBY) LUFFMAN. HE IS MY UNCLE. I HAVEN'T SEEN OR TALK TO HIM SINCE MY DAD (HOWARD DAVID BUIE) DIED IN FEB 1999. I KNOW THAT NAOMI LUFFMAN CURTIS LIVES IN SUMMERTOWN, TN.

Hello,

I recently inherited several family bibles without being given any context.

One of the bibles clearly has writen in the front leaf:
Donald Buie
Urquhart
1841

Inserted into the other bible is a birth and death record that I'll list here:
Peter Buie Oct 6 1817
Alexander Buie Feb 20 1820
Donald Buie Jan 22 1825
Jean Buie July 4 1825
Isabella Buie Aug 6 1827
Jannet Buie Aug 8 1829
James Buie July 6 1832
Elspet Buie Feb 1 1835
William Buie Dec 2 1837
May Buie Feb 13 1841
Above born in Urquhart
----
Born in Elgin
Donald Buie & Jannet Read - 1709

On the back side:
Deaths
Peter and Alexander Buie Feb 1827
James Buie - March 23 1834
Jannet Buie Aug 16, 1851
Jean Buie Mar 19, 1854
Elspet Buie Aug 26, 1859
---
Donald Buie (father) died May 18, 1869.

If someone has any information that would give me some context to what these bibles say, I would truly appreciate it. I know that I have a Buie in my family tree. Annie Laurie Buie (real name is likely Anna Laura) was my 2nd great grandmother. The 1930 Census indicates that she was born in Missouri around 1870 and that her dad was from Scotland. I can only assume at this point that her dad is Donald Buie.

Thanks for your help.

You mustn't make the error of adding your slave descendant Buie's to the Buie family genealogy without proof of genealogical descent. After the Civil War, names were assigned to former slaves in various ways. They were not assumed or inherited. Slaves descendants most often are not genetically related to their former slaveholders, though occasionally they are. Don't subject yourself to the embarrassment of the Jeffersons who had always believed themselves descendants of Thomas Jefferson--DNA testing has proven otherwise.

Re: John Buie

My research on the Buie family indicates that I am the great great grandson of William W. Buie and Martha F. Nichols. William, I believe, was son of John Buie, Sr., and brother of John Buie, Jr., Cornelius Buie and Duncan R. Buie, all of which lived in Hardin County, Tennessee, from the late 1820's until the late 1840's and Duncan even after 1850. This John, Jr. moved to Conway County, Arkansas, before 1850,William moved to Hot Spring County, Arkansas, in 1847,and Cornelius died in Hardin County, Tennessee, in 1838. This is not the Cornelius that married Mary Young in Tennessee. John Buie, Sr., has become known as "The Patriot" because of his Revolution War service which was spelled out in his pension application filed in Hardin County in 1835. From all indications from this pension record he was born in Scotland in 1759 and was the son of Duncan. This Duncan Buie is probably the Duncan who came with his wife and young son to America in 1867. This Duncan's last name was given as Buea as were the other Buies on the ship, the General Wolfe. About 60 highlander from Jura, Argull, were on this ship and landed at Brunswick, North Carolina on November 4, 1767. There were several other Buie's (Buea) on this ship, probably all part of the same family. Please let me hear from anyone interested in the Buie family. I need more information to tie up some loose ends and I will certainly share more information.

Rufus Buie

Hi Helen

I have found a Jane Buie in my family history. She was married to George Alexander, they had a daughter Jane Alexander born 1811 died 10.09.1884. They lived around Urquhart, Elgin, Scotland. Do you have any reference in your family history?

Olive
