I have that Thomas Bulla and Esther Widdows had a son Isaac, who married Mary Brice Wade. I wonder if you know who were parents of Mary Brice Wade or was Isaac the second husband of Mary Brice, widow of Elijah Wade. From the dates I have for Elijah, 1784-1814, he died at only thirty, so presumably his young widow would have remarried. In that case, she would be the mother of Rebecca Wade, who married John Moore.

I descend from Esther Widdows sister, Elizabeth, who married William Moore. For years I've been looking for his family. He is in 1820 census in Wayne, IN, where his daughter Frances married Alexander Hoover in 1826. I've been trying to find clues from other families who migrated to IN from NC.
Thanks. Kate

My Grandfather Franz Bulla was born in Breslau (now Wroclaw) about 1902 to Wiktor and Klara Bulla. He stowed away on a ship in the early 1920's. Thought he was going to America and ended up in Australia instead. I have reference of a cousin Helen and her son Hermann. Wiktor died around 1958 and my grandfather in 1969. Franz had 2 children in Australia. Franklin and Annie (my Mother)

My direct line ancestors carry the Bullough name and they came from Hunslet, Leeds England with Lawrence Bullough being born about 1668. He is the last known ancestor that I know about in this family line. I'd like to learn if we might have any family connections in your family history research dating back to the 1600's in Ireland?

Thought I should post a blurb about who and what the Doan Gang was, for clarity's sake. Those of you also interested in Quaker history should most definitely explore them.

From Wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doan_Outlaws

The Doan Outlaws were a notorious gang of brothers from a Quaker family most renowned for being British spies during the American Revolution.

The Doans were Loyalists from a Quaker family of good standing. The "Doan boys" reached manhood at the time of the American Revolutionary War. Growing up in Plumstead, Pennsylvania, the Doans excelled athletically. The Doan gang's principal occupation was robbing Whig tax collectors and horse theft. The gang stole over 200 horses from their neighbors in Bucks County that they sold to the Red Coats in Philadelphia and Baltimore. The Friends Meeting House's cemetery in Plumsteadville is protected by a field stone wall that runs around its perimeter. Levi and Abraham Doan were buried just outside this wall, because the two were not thought to merit burial in the sanctified ground of the cemetery, and their headstones were inscribed with the word "Outlaw".

Thomas Bulla, wife Sarah, Amos Williams and the Doan gang?

Greetings fellow Bulla descendants -- This message is about Thomas Bulla jr., (1744-1809) of Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

With Google books putting more and more genealogical books and related material online, I've been looking for extra bits of information on ancestors that folks have already researched. Doing this, recently I found some intriguing leads.

Now, there seems to have been a bit of confusion over Thomas Bulla's marriages. I do not have anything concrete to add at this point. What I have found, however, is quite a lot of Loyalist information concerning a Thomas Bulla, with a wife named Sarah. I can't be 100 percent certain this is the Thomas Bulla, son of Thomas Bulla, who later married Esther Widdows. However, also named with him in a couple of the lists was his half-brother Amos Williams. It would seem logical that they might participate in such a thing, together.

If it is the same Thomas Bulla, it either pushes forward the date he married Esther Widdows, (as Sarah was alive in 1788) indicates divorce of some kind, or some other solution I can't think of right at this moment.

Thomas' going to and fro from North Carolina from Pennsylvania (apparently he was turned in for reward) would also explain a lot of the confusion of dates of family events of this time period.

I do see a six year gap between the births of John Bulla and Daniel Bulla, which might be important, or might not.

As far as I know of, no one has a firm date of Thomas' and Esther's marriage, either, and it has only been surmised from other material. (Please correct me and add source info if I am wrong.)

As well, no one has a firm date of Thomas' and Sarah Wallace's marriage, only that it existed from reading of a deed (dated 15 January, 1772; in Guilford County, North Carolina), and a third party source. (Now this other information.)

At the moment, only this Thomas was the right match per location and date.

Following is what I've found from online sources regarding this. I would like to be able to see the sources in full copies/microfilms at some point, but have not been able to yet.

Have any other Bulla researchers run into this material? Any comments, corrections, ideas? I would love to hear them.

Dina Grozev

* * * *

From Troubled Experiment; Crime and Justice in Pennsylvania, 1682-1800, by Jack D. Marietta, Gail Stuart Rowe:

"In 1788 Sarah Bulla wife of Thomas Bulla, a member of the infamous Doan gang, was convicted of being an accessory after the fact in the crimes of Aaron Doan."

**Footnote reads: 84 Buller [or Bulla] Clemency Records, R6-27 roll 40.

* * * *

From Between the Lines, Banditti of the American Revolution, by Harry M. Ward:

"Thomas Bulla, also a Doane bandit, returned to Pennsylvania"

**There may also be other pertinent information as per the Bulla family, but Google books only provides a snippet view of this book.

* * * *

From Letters of Delegates to Congress, 1774-1789: Oct 1, 1779-March 31, 1780, by Paul Hubert Smith and Gerard W. Gawalt:

"I have full proof that Thomas Bulla, whom we bailed at Lancaster, is deeply concerned, there being many charges against him."

** Another Google books snippet view.

* * * *

From History of Delaware County - Ashmead, Ch IV, p 73:

Colonial Records, vol xi. pp 313-318

"Governor Guerard, of South Carolina having applied for the home of all persons who have been proclaimed traitors in Pennsylvania, on Nov 28, 1783, John Morris prepared a certified list from which are taken the following names of persons from the present county of Delaware, and those who were then recorded as from Chester, without designating the townships where they resided ...

... Of Chester county - Thomas Bulla, husbandman;"

and a bit from the message boards regarding Amos Williams:

From PACHESTE-L Archives:

"It appears that Amos Williams also went to North Carolina, for on 19 Jun 1776, there is a mention that he sent a letter to the Sadsbury Monthly Meeting acknowledging his misconduct during his residence here (PA). There are mentions of an Amos Williams in the Minutes after this date, so perhaps he went and came back, or these may be mentions are of another Amos Williams. One of the mentions is when he was accused of passing counterfeit paper currency and absenting himself from his place of abode, on 21 Oct 1778. "

Dear Peggy,

I am researching my Giancarlo family and we may be able to exchange some information if you are still out there...as I see your note was posted in 2000!

From my research it seems that the Giancarlo family originate around the L'Aquila, Abruzo region of Italy, specifically from the towns of Navelli, Opi, Pescara etc.

I have seen some records of a group of Giancarlo's migrating to Canada who were somehow a part of the Italian Army.

My g. grandfather was Salvatore (b. 1888 in Serradifalco, Sicily) and his father was Gaetano (b. 1845 Navelli). Gaetano's father was Sebastiano, but I do not have an exact birthdate for him yet.

I will send this to your email as well.

best,

John Giancarlo

My last name is Bulla. My family is from Italy. This is what I know..Mary Simeti was married to Peter Bulla. The family is supposedly from Messina or Barone. Or the last name Barone is related to us. We were told some of our family died in a volcano eruption in the 1800's. I have a rare blood type- it is A-.
Thomas Bulla - April 19, 1780
History of Wayne County Indiana
Page: 338 - 339

THOMAS BULLA was born in Chester County, Pa., April 19, 1780, and while young, emigrated with his father to North Carolina, in the time of the Revolutionary war. At the age of 19, he married MARY FOUTS, by whom he had two children, LENORE and THOMAS. In the fall of 1804, he came with his family to Germantown, Ohio, where his father-in-law resided. They crossed the Ohio at Cincinnati, where he saw but three brick houses. In November, 1805, he started with six others in search of land. After ten days' journey and thirty miles travel with a two-horse team through the wilderness, cutting their road from Eaton, twelve miles, they camped half a mile south of where he afterward settled, 5 miles south-east of Richmond, near the south-east corner of Wayne township. Three of them, JESSE DAVENPORT, JACOB FOUTS and himself entered their lands. His wife dying in September following, he deferred his removal until the last of December, 1806, when, with his two children and a second wife, SUSANNA MOWERY, he resumed house-keeping in his log cabin. Coming so soon after those of the Holman and Rue settlement, he and his neighbors were subjected to like privations and hardships. They had to pack their breadstuffs on horseback from the settlements in Ohio, and take their first crops of grain into that state, a distance of 12 miles, to be ground.

MR. BULLA had by his second wife 16 children--making in all 18; of whom the following passed the age of infancy: 1. SARAH, who married JOEL EAST. They reside in Cass County, Michigan. 2. WILLIAM, who married, first, MARY EDWARDS, and settled in Preble County, Ohio; second, MARTHA GREEN. 3. JOSEPH M. [See Sketch.] 4. JOHN, who married in Preble County, Ohio, and died in Goshen, Elkhart County, Ind. 5. ISAAC N., who graduated at the Medical College of Ohio, and died in 1841, at the age of 25 yrs, 6. SUSAN, who married JOSEPH MATLACK, and resides 4 miles north of Richmond. 7. & 8. CHRISTINA and NANCY, both of whom died in 1841. 9. JAMES, who died at 11. 10. HIRAM, who married ELIZABETH STALEY, of Preble County, Ohio, and lives on the homestead of his father. 11. MARY, who married EDWARD SHUTE, and resides in Clark County, Ill. 12. CHESTER, who married SARAH A. DAVIDSON, and resides in Richmond.
-----------

Hi Dan: I knew of a lady that was in the Real Estate business for many years. She had a son by the name of Dan. Her name of Mabel and her husband's name was Zeb, probaby Zebulon. They are both deceased now. I think in all they had 5 children. I wish I could think of their names, but right now,I can't. Mabel was one of the finest ladies I have ever known in my life and she worked so hard and was one of the most honest persons that I know ! She lived, alone over on Cantrell Avenue, in Nashville. She had a dau that lives in Triune, Tn that was at one time a teacher but gave that up to sell Real Estate. And she had a son that was an architect. She had a sister, also deceased that she called, "Baby Sister." I don't recall ever having hear her call her actual name.
Mabel's maiden name was PEGRAM and they were from the Dickson, TN area. Gee, I wish I knew more.
If they fit into the line you are searching, maybe I could find out more.

sincerely:
Jane

If they fit into the line you are searching, maybe I could find out more.

sincerely:
Jane

My Bulla ancestors came from Poland so I don't find it strange that you have a family member from the area that you memtioned. My Grandfather died in Warsaw, Poland and his name was Joseph Bulla. I have no idea if we are related or not but there is a possibility. It does seem that we are a different group than the ones that the Bulla Book is written about. It is an interesting book though as I have a copy and have enjoyed it even if it is about usless to me in my research. They sound like a great family though.
