Bumbaco / Vumbaca / Vumbaco. From the greek bombyx, indicating the silkworm. The surname (such as those arising from the greek) is very old, and clearly indicates an ancestor engaged in breeding of silkworms, or generally in commerce or in the production of silk, widespread activity in our land --Monasterace, Calabria--, where it met a first decay with the expulsion of the Jews (holders of trade) in the 16th century, and then in the 20th century, with the introduction of synthetic fabrics, it was the final collapse of the industry.

There are many Bumbaca's in Ontario related to you.
Not sure why in the USA they go by Bumbaco.
And I met a few living in Southbend Indiana, also related.

I am looking for information on the Frank Bumbaco family that immigrated to Saulte St. Marie, Canada. He was my great-grandfather. His wife's name was Agatha Oliveri. One daughter moved to northeastern Pennsylvania. Any information is appreciated.

My Grandfather Joseph Bumbaco SR. and his brothers came here many years ago from canada. There are alot of Bumbaco's that live in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. My grandfathers (Joseph Bumbaco SR) parents names were CARMELLO BUMBACO AND JULIA COMITO. i will have to get you all the information that i have. Here is some of it.

IN 1914, SANTO AND JULIA BUMBACO CAME TO THE US FROM SICILY. THEIR SONS WERE JOSEPH AGE 14) AND PETER, THEY HAD MANY DAUGHTERS.
PETER MARRIED MARY TREPASSO AND HAD 7 SONS.
JOSEPH MARRIED MARY PETTINATO, WHO WAS BORN IN PA (HER MOM AND DAD WERE BORN IN ITALY)
THEIR CHILDREN- YOUR LIST + JOSEPHINE.
THEY WERE COBBLERS, ALTHOUGH THERE ARE STORIES THAT SANTO WAS A BOOTLEGGER AND HE WAS KILLED BY THE BLACK HAND (MAFIA)
THERE ARE BUMBACO'S AND BUMBACA'S DOCUMENTED FROM ENNA, SICILY TO WESTERN PA, ERIE AND BUFFALO NY. THEY CAME AS LABORERS FOR THE RAILROAD, MINES AND STEEL MILLS. THERE IS ALSO A BIG BUMBACCO FAMILY , FROM THE ENNA SICILY AREA, THAT MIGRATED TO SAUTE STE MARIE IN ONTARIO CANADA

I would be a relative from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Canada. Yes, you are very correct when you state "a very large family" in Sault Ste. Marie. Thank You for the information. Uncle John and Aunt Sue live in my grandfathers house in Grove City. That is great that they are going to look for information.I remember going to visit Carmie in Maryland many years ago with my Dad. (Joe Bumbaco). Check ellisisland.org- it shows a big family from Calabria, their destination was Saint Ste. Marie. It is dated April 5, 1914- the ship is The Franconia. The spelling is Bumbaca but what I have found is that the spellings are often incorrect.

SHE LIVED WITH MYSELF AND HER SON JIMMY BAWGUS FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, MY WORK ON HER FAMILY TREE, IS A GIFT FOR HER CHILDREN ( THE STIDHAM'S ARE NOT RELATED TO THE BUMBACO'S). My grandfathers name was Joseph Bumbaco, My father Joseph Bumbaco Jr., My father has Five sisters names Jennie, Julia, Rose, and Carmie.I cant think of the other sisters name she is deceased. They are from the Pennsylvania area. My father also has a brother John. Joseph Bumbaco Sr. is deceased.

Hi! I'm researching Bernardi's in Martin's Ferry, Ohio. I do not know if your Nicodemo is related as of yet. However, many of your posts have come up when I've done my searches because of the similarities, so i thought i'd drop you a line.

Pietro (Pete, Peter) Bernardi <born: June 29, 1878-died: March 18, 1953> married Clorinda Mecodangelo/McAngelo <born: April 4, 1888-died: Feb. 1974>

They lived at 833 N. 6th street, Martin's Ferry, Belmont County, Ohio.

They had two kids I know for sure about...

Venanzi <born: Jan. 12, 1908-died: Feb. 1983> and Richard <born: Nov. 15, 1915-died: Dec. 16, 1989>

Venanzi married Mary Mennillo and had 4 children, they resided in the Clairton/Wilson area of Pennsylvania.

Richard lived and died in Martin's Ferry.

Anyone have information on the marriage of Anna Bumbico (could be Bumbaco from Italy) to Nicodemo Bernardi in either Ohio or West Virginia. Anna's brothers were Joseph, Felix, Sam, Frank (Francisco), and Larry (Lorenzo). Their children are: Philomena, Luigi, Marion, Antonio, and Leonardo.
