Bumbaco / Vumbaca / Vumbaco. From the greek bombyx, indicating the silkworm. The surname (such as those arising from the greek) is very old, and clearly indicates an ancestor engaged in breeding of silkworms, or generally in commerce or in the production of silk, widespread activity in our land --Monasterace, Calabria--, where it met a first decay with the expulsion of the Jews (holders of trade) in the 16th century, and then in the 20th century, with the introduction of synthetic fabrics, it was the final collapse of the industry.

I didn't know that I had relatives that reside in the US. If you have anyother information of our family tree please don't hesitate to forward it on to me.

Have a great Holiday Season and Best Wishes for the New Year.

JB

I only know alittle bit of my family background but was under the understanding that there was a family disbute and one side took one "C" and the other took two "CC"'s. If you have any other information that is realative to our family background please don't hesitate to reply.

Have a great Holiday Season.

JB

Check ellisisland.org- it shows a big family from Calabria, their destination was Saint Ste. Marie. It is dated April 5, 1914- the ship is The Franconia. The spelling is Bumbaca but what I have found is that the spellings are often incorrect.

HI MICHELLE- CARMELLA BUMBACO DEWITT- PASSED AWAY ON JUNE 10. SHE LIVED WITH MYSELF AND HER SON JIMMY BAWGUS FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, MY WORK ON HER FAMILY TREE, IS A GIFT FOR HER CHILDREN ( THE STIDHAM'S ARE NOT RELATED TO THE BUMBACO'S). I WILL MAKE SURE THAT YOU RECEIVE A COPY. HER CHILDREN ARE FROM HER FIRST MARRIAGE TO CARL BAWGUS, THEY ARE CARLA BLOSS, JIMMY, EARL AND MIKE BAWGUS.
UNFORTUNATELY, JOSEPH SR. DID NOT TALK ABOUT ITALY OR HIS FAMILY, SO CARMIE AND HER BROTHERS AND SISTERS DID NOT HAVE VERY MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR HERITAGE. I DID LEARN THAT THEY WERE NOT FROM SICILY AS CARMIE BELIEVED- THEY WERE FROM A TOWN NAMED GERACE IN REGGIO CALABRIA WHICH IS AT THE TIP OF THE MAINLAND OF ITALY. JOHN BUMBACO LIVES IN THE HOUSE WERE JOSEPH SR LIVED, HE AND HIS WIFE ARE GOING TO SEARCH RECORDS THEY HAVE STORED IN THE BASEMENT TO FIND OUT MORE FOR US.
