Re: BUMGARNER Belle and Arthur A

My family lives in Drop texas about 7 miles outside of Justin. I recently found an old community cookbook detailing the history of the Bumgarner family in Drop, TX:

Auther and Belle Bumgarner, originally from North Carolina, moved to the Drop community from Wise county (where he had worked on a ranch) in 1915 with two daughters: Mada and Lois and later Hazel. In 1919 they opened a small grocery store serving the drop residents that was located at what is now the corner of Oliver Creek Rd. and A.A. Bumgarner Rd.

G B BUMGARNER Dies of Sunstroke 1914 OK

...from the archives in Oklahoma City, OK:

The Daily Oklahoman
07-30-1914
p.11

HEAT BRINGS DEATH TO G. B. BUMGARNER

Hottest Day of Year Causes First Sunstroke of 1914

The hottest day of the summer in Oklahoma City brought
death to one, and caused unusual discomfort to man and
beast on Wednesday. The thermometer registered 104
degrees at the local weather bureau, breaking all heat
records for the season. The hottest day previously was
July 16, when the mercury reached 102 degrees.

G B Bumgarner, 64 years old, died from sunstroke four
miles west of the city Wednesday afternoon. He leaves a
wife and 3 daughters in Oklahoma City. The body is being
held in the parlors of Street & Draper, undertakers,
awaiting funeral arrangements.

The mercury rose steadily at a minimum temperature of
76 degrees at 7 a.m. Wednesday. At 11 o'clock the
temperature had reached 100 degrees and at 5 o'clock
the maximum of 104 degrees was reached. Weather records
show that it was the hottest July 29 in Oklahoma City in
twenty-four years. At 9 p.m. the mercury had dropped
only to 91 degrees, and the wind was hot, refusing to
cool materially from the extreme heat of daylight. Cool
breezes came at midnight.

The pavements, soft from the intense heat, reflected the
sun's rays, and the tall downtown buildings proed barriers
to the baking winds, which seared vegetation. Those who
were down town sweltered, puffed, fanned and took refuge,
many of them, in thirst parlors, which universally did a
thriving business. One thermometer in front of a drug
store registered 108 degrees.

***posted for genealogical purposes only; no relation***

DNA Testing
I want to pass on information about how to get your DNA test done. If you are interested, or want further details, contact me at family_ties@tarhalla.com.

Who can participate in the Bumgarner Surname DNA Project? First, the participant must be a male. This is because the DNA test is done on the Y-chromosome (the male sex chromosome). The second requirement is that the participant must bear one of the variant surnames. Bumgarner/ Bumgardner/ Baumgardner/ Baumgartner/ Bumgartner/ Bomgardner/ Bomgartner Bomgarner. The one exception to this is if the participant is a direct male descendant of someone bearing one of the variant surnames, but someone in his line of descent changed his name such as Bumgardner to Gardner or Garner. However, the line of descent has to be male since the Y-chromosome is passed from father to son to son, etc. and not to daughters.

Women, while they cannot test, can participate by getting a male relative bearing one of the surnames to test.

DNA testing is proving to be very useful in our genealogy. Since the Y-chromosome is passed down virtually unchanged (except for a very slow mutation rate), two men with identical, or almost identical, DNA test results are related. When I add this information to what we know of the genealogies involved, we can sometimes see how they relate.

I cannot discuss prices on this list, so contact me for price information. As to which test I recommend, I recommend at least the 37-marker test and really prefer the 67-marker test. I am finding that quite often I need to have members go to 67 markers to better understand their results and how they compare to others. Also, going ahead and getting the 67-marker test is cheaper that getting the 37-marker test and later upgrading to 67 markers.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the DNA testing.

Sincerely,

Di Bumgardner Tarhalla
Administrator, Bumgarner DNA
family_ties@tarhalla.com
World Families Network
Where Genealogy meets DNA Testing
http://www.worldfamilies.net/
Pinkney Bumgarner - My Brick Wall

My Brick Wall is my great-great-grandfather Pinkney Bumgarner b. ~1855 d. unknown who married Catherine Williams on March 4, 1875 in Catawba Co., NC. Catherine Williams b. 1859 d.1946 is the daughter of John Williams and Elizabeth “Tabitha” Bumgarner.

Pinkney Bumgarner and Catherine Williams had the following children:

Theodore “Doras” Bumgarner b. 3/14/1873 (before the marriage)
Alonzo Bumgardner b. 11/22/1875

Shortly before the marriage, Catherine Williams appeared in court reference a Bastardy Bond for her son Theodore naming Pinkney as the father.

Witnesses for her at the wedding were Thomas Bumgarner, Daniel Abernathy and Charles Parker. Must have been a shotgun wedding, because it appears she may have been pregnant a 2nd time with Alonzo.

The family who knew her, the grandchildren, say that right after Alonzo was born, Pinkney took off, left Catherine and started a new family he raised in Kings Mountain, Cleveland Co., NC. All of them agree that Pinkney went to Kings Mountain and none of them ever saw him again but only heard of him from time to time.

So I’ve been searching for every Pinkney Bumgarner I could locate in North Carolina, never finding a Pinkney anywhere in Kings Mountain.

I have already located the following Pinkney’s and eliminated them:

Pinkney Bumgarner b.1902 son of Hosea P and Fanny Bumgarner (born too late)
Jasper Pinkney Bumgarner b.1874 (born too late)
Howard Pinkney Bumgarner b. 1942 (born too late)
Joseph Pinkney Bumgarner b. 1888 (born too late)
Nathanial Pinkney Bumgarner b. 1866 (born too late)
William Pinkney Bumgarner b. 1838 (born to early and married to Mary Howard from
June 1857 till she died in 1887)

One Possibility that has possibilities has always been:
William Pinkney Bumgarner b. 1849 s/o Aaron Amon Bumgarner and Elizabeth Mauney
Married to Harriett Painter Dec 1869, he had 2 children with her in 1871 and 1874.
Married to Candice Hollar Oct 1876 (12 years before Harriet Painter died. Did they divorce?)

Of course there is a time gap between the birth of a child in 1874 and his marriage to Candice Hollar in 1876 (my Pinkney married, had a son Alonzo, and left Catherine all in the span of one year 1875)

Speaking to descendents, they just totally do not believe this to be possible.
Then just recently I found a new possibility:

William Pinkney Bumgarner b. 1848 per gravestone records (though census records have given a later date) Married to Martha Bennett and found living in Kings Mountain, Cleveland, NC on the 1920 and 1930 census

So far I have found 3 children:
Charles H Bumgarner b. 1886
Zettie B Baumgardner b. 1889
Edward W Baumgardner b. 1894

There is a discrepancy of spelling which I have eliminated, as although the census records show the spelling as Baumgardner, the tombstones in Mountain Rest Cemetery for both he and Martha show the spelling Bumgardner. (I find this interesting, because my great-grandfather Alonzo, changed the spelling of the family name to Bumgardner, adding the D when his children were younger, and none of them knows why he did that)

Anyway, this William Pinkney Bumgardner appears to “fit” all the elements:

Lived in Kings Mountain
Was the approximately correct age
Had his children after Catherine Williams Bumgarner had hers.
It appears from documents that they did call him Pink and Pinkney.

Can anyone tell me who this William Pinkney’s Parents may have been? Or any other information about him?

He died, presumably in Kings Mountain, Cleveland, NC on December 27, 1941. I have not yet located the death records.

Sorry I don't have much info on Simon Bumgarner. All I know is what my Grandfather told me. He didn't know his Grandfather David L. because he was killed during the Civil War. He knew his Greatgrandfather Simon, well, since he died when my Grandfather was about 18. My Grandpa said he was the first Bumgarner born in America. Not sure just what he meant by that. He never told me his Greatgrandmothers name, and since I was 4 when he died, I didn't ask that many questions. My Dad and his brothers and sisters never spoke much about Simon or David L. They talked about their Grandfather, who was James Simon. For some reason, they called James Simon, Simon. I think it had to do with their Dad speaking of Grandpa Simon, refering to his Greatgrandfather. It just got carried into James Simon being refered to as Grandpa Simon. I only have what other people have put on this web site, as far as Simon, his brothers and sisters, and parents. My 2nd cousins son, John Crossen, was doing a lot of research on Simon, but was diagnosed with cancer, and died 2 months after. He was only in his mid 40's. My Grandfather was born in 1880 near Hickory, where his father James Simon was also born. James Simon and his wife, Martha Albertine Benfield are buried near where my Dad was born in Boone, NC. It is called Rich Mountain. The church it is near is Mt Pisqua, I believe.

Sorry I can't help you on the email address. I did have some contact with Dave Kilby, who has quite a bit on the Bumgarners. You might find him in the links, and contact him. Simons wife is Eliza Kesler (Kessler). Simons parents are Thomas G. and Mary Anderson. Thomas parents are John and Nancy. I don't know Nancys maiden name. I got this info from someone, and didn't document who. Sorry. They have a Bumgarner renion each fall in August. Not sure who puts this all together. Dave may help you on that. Good Luck Cousin. Kuz Keith Baumgarner
PS My Dad added the a when he learned from a teacher that the spelling was BAUM - which means tree in German. I believe the actor James Garner is also a Bumgarner from OK.

William Lee Bumgarner and wife Myrtle Bumgarner

Hi. I am trying to find "Harrbo@bellsouth.net" who posted a while ago about these people. The email address no longer is valid. "Harrbo" was descended from Lee and Myrtle Bumgarner and I believe I have a family photo of them. I have an old sepia toned photo entitled, "children of Lee and Myrtle Adams Bumgarner". This would be in Alexander Co., NC or maybe Mecklenburg,Co., NC. William Lee Bumgarner was born May 1883 in Alexander Co., NC.

I descend from Amon Davidson Bumgarner and have been trying to figure out how Simon fit in. Could we compare notes?

My Amon Davidson Bumgarner married Sarah Miller. This Amon was born c. 1794 and died in 1845 in present-day Alexander County, NC. Is this the same one that you are referring to? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply and the info on Simon. I, too, am trying to figure out how he is related to my line. I have a lot of Bumgarner info and have even followed some the the lines that went to OK and AR. If I find anymore on how your line connects, I will let you know. Do you have an email address for Brian [BBUM751]? He seems to be of my line. Thanks!

This is Carol (Bumgarner) King, descendent from Absalom (born about 1788, son of John and Nancy..). I have used info from this thread to fill in info on my web site about the 'Bumgarner Family Line', www.bumgarnergray.com/bumgarner_family_line.htm

If anyone sees anything there that should be corrected, removed, or added, please let me know. I am not a geneologist and have done no official research, other than sifting through stuff my parents had, and searching the web. At first I just did the the web site to share photos my parents had and ended up drawing family line charts to figure out the photos. Somehow it escalated from there.

Thanks for the great info about Bumgarners here!
