I am Milo Bump's son and Jesse and Nancy were my Grandparents. When I was young we used to go up to the old house where Jesse and Nancy lived. I visited that area in August and went by where they lived and I guess you live there now. Lila, Calvin, Milo and Mina have all passed on now. My 3 sisters still live up in that area. 1 in Malone, 1 in Brainerdsville and the other in Canada. My brother Bryan lives in California. I live in Pennsylvania.

I noticed that your inquiry was for 1996 so you may already have received the information you requested. My grandmother was Mabel Aura Bump. She was born in Connecticut and moved to Cohoes, New York after she and my grandfather were married. As you have a Mabel Bump in your family tree, I wonder if we could be related. I descend from John who was born 02 June 1636. Are you from the same John?
If you do, then perhaps we could help each other with our research.

Hoping to hear from you.

Lynne Jones-Bateman
I am looking for a possible BUMP-STURDEVANT connection. I recently received information that an Arvilla Bump, possible born in New York, married a Harmon (Hammond)Sturdevant. Arvilla and Harmond ended up Crawford, Kansas, and Arvilla lived into her 90's. Her daughter Francis A. Sturdevant married William Beach. As of the 1880 census for Crawford County, Arvilla and Harmon were living with Francis, who was widowed, by then. Francis and William Beach had a daughter, Lettie May (born in New York), who married John H. Kitchen (born in Pennsylvania. They all migrated to Kansas @ 1870s. The BUMP family connection took me by surprise. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Will share info.

Hi William,
I have never gone back to this message board and, therefore, have missed your email response. Sorry about that. Thanks for the info you sent.

Do you have any information on when the Bump line married into the Nourse line? I am especially looking for Reuben Bump b. c1746 Wareham, Plymouth MA (I think). I am looking for Reuben's wife. He and this wife had 3 girls, Sally, Lucy, and Mary Polly, and 1 boy, Reuben Jr.

All of the children except Mary Polly were born in VT. I think it may have been around Brattleboro, but not sure. They may have been "Vermont Sufferers".

( I am descended from Lucy who married Samuel Rogers Nurse) Reuben, apparently widowed, went to Chanango Co NY c 1789.
He later married Abigail Adams, the widow of Henry Adams.

Reuben Sr, Reuben, Jr, Sally and Mary are all buried in the Afton,Chenango Co. NY area. Lucy and Samuel R Nurse came on west and finally settled in Scioto Co, OH. They are both buried there.

Any information about Reuben's first wife would be most appreciated. She may have been a Warner as there are several boys named Warner in the children of all 4 of Reuben's children.

Hope to hear from you or anyone else who reads this. This has really been a wall for me. My email is cnourse002@insight.rr.com.

Thanks so much

William was from New York and I believe Mary was as well. I lose their upward line at this point.

Looking for info on my greatgrandmother, b. Julia Mabel Bump 11-Jun-1877 in Elyria, OH. Married Joseph Mckindred Brown 1903 in Erie, KS. She moved with her new husband and several stepchildren to CO, then to Polsen, MT. and finally Deer Lodge, MT. She died there 4-May-1956. Her father's name was John Bump, she also had a brother by that name. John Sr. was supposedly a Civil War veteran, which state unknown. He was supposedly born in NY, orphaned and adopted. I don't know if Bump was his original name or adopted name. I know some of the family ended up in WA., I met Ruth Bump, a daughter of the younger John who lived in Wenatchee, WA., but she was elderly, and I didn't ask the right questions or she didn't know the answers. Any info on this family would be appreciated.

Ebenezer R Bump/Mary Ann Rose Lyme, Ct.

I’m wondering if anyone has any information regarding the family of Ebenezer R Bump and Mary Ann Rose of Lyme, Ct. I believe that my GG grandfather was their oldest son John L born 1835 in Lyme. He married Emma E Ames of Lyme in May of 1856. Additional siblings include: William Lord (who appears to have married Emma’s sister Sarah M Ames), George E., Augusta, Ellen and Franklin A.

John L was a seaman and eventually moved his family from East Lyme to New London and eventually to Jersey City, New Jersey where he worked as a harbor pilot. It also appears that at some point after leaving East Lyme, he changed his surname his from Bump to Bunce. I’ve recently uncovered the marriage records in Lyme for John L and Emma Ames, as well as the birth records for 5 of their children. All are recorded using the Bump name.

Any additional confirmation (or denial) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help!

Joanne (Bunce)Powers
Hi All, I see this line of posts is somewhat old but I've just uncovered the fact that my GG grandfather John L Bunce, is really John L Bump. Son of Ebenezer and Susan Bump of Lyme, Connecticut. Talk about a paradigm shift! All this time I've been looking for Bunce's and he changed the name. John L Bump was born in June of 1834, married Emma E Ames, of East Lyme in 1856. Moved the family first to New London city, then to Jersey City, NJ where he was a Harbor Pilot. Any info on the Ebenzer Bump family in Lyme would be greatly appreciated.

Joanne Bunce Powers

Dear Charles:

Am looking into Bumps in Wyoming County, NY. Betsy and Job BUMP in particular. They appear in the 1850, 1860 censuses in Wyoming County. Was Betsy a PHILLIPS or a CLEVELAND perhaps? And where did they come from? They have a Hannah PHILLIPS living with them. And we are wondering if she was a BUMP - OR - perhaps was she Betsy Bump's mother or aunt?

We are looking at the BUMPS, but also the PHILLIPS. William H. PHILLIPS was born October 10, 1801 in Hanover, NH. We know he had a brother named Levi, b. ~1805, and at least one other sister, Frances, b. ~1808. He MIGHT, however, have had an older sister and we wonder if this might be Betsy BUMP.

There is a PHILIPS in Grafton County, NH in 1800. There is no way to tell if this is his family however. We do not know his father's given name except that that Missouri State History says that William's father was the son of Lord Phillips of Ireland. The BUMPS, CLEVELANDS, CHURCHILLS, and PHILLIPS are all wound up in this together and many seem to have been in the Connecticut River Valley area not too far from each other either. Also the unknown father of Wm. did come from Ireland to Massachusetts. However, we have not found a ship with a Phillips on it yet. Period.

Any ideas? Help? <help, help> B-)

Betsy Phillips

I'm a little confused by your message. These people obviously lived in western New York. Genessee County is the county directly north of Wyoming County, where our search is concentrated. And Rochester is not that far away either. We lived in the Buffalo area for about 20 years.

As I understand it, your concern is about Henry's mother, Adelia Van Buren. Is this correct? So when was Henry born, who was his father and where was his father born, etc. ??

I appreciate your detailing your Bumps relationship to the one Bompasse (or similar spelling). However, I do not have the whole lineage of that family. I am interested in obtaining it somehow, but am not sure how. Have been (briefly) on the BUMP Rootsweb mailing list, but evidently a lot of stuff on line was removed recently, so am waiting to see what happens.

I only really began looking into this about a week ago, finally realizing that several mysteries might be solved by looking at the Hannah PHILLIPS who lived with Joseph and Betsy BUMP in Wyoming County (get a map out of NY State to understand this). Hannah was a popular BUMP given name. So .... no sure about this. Then also one person told me Hannah had lived in Cattaraugus County (WNY) ... so there is a question of what happened, etc.

Have you done the usual checks on Adelia and her husband? Census, local records, Rootsweb mailing lists, etc.?

Thanks for your own B-) prompt response.

I am interested in your search, but I have to go backward and see if they tie in with mine and other BUMPS before I can go forward. I am rather at a loss right now.

However, when I do go forward, I will know if there is an ADELIA involved.

You might try a Rootsweb mailing list for Monroe County in New York. I believe that Rochester is in Monroe County. We used to live in the Buffalo area, so am somewhat familiar with Western New York.

Best wishes, Betsy Phillips

I'm trying to get more information on a Betsy and Job Bump, Wyoming County, because they had a Hannah PHILLIPS living with them according to the 1850, 1860 censuses. We are wondering if Hannah was Betsy's mother or some other relative or if she was a Bump or Cleveland.

William H. PHILLIPS was born in Hanover, NH on October 10, 1801. There is a younger brother and sister, but according to the 1800 census of Grafton County, there was a girl born to a family named PHILIPS. We don't know if they are the same or not. No given name for head of house. B-|

We know that the PHILLIPS, BUMPS, CLEVELANDS, and maybe the CHURCHILLS were all intertwined but are not sure how.

Betsy Phillips

Bump and Kester - Miami Co, Kansas

I'm looking for information on my great great grandmother - Anna Mollie Bump. She married Ferdinand Warren Kester in Vermillion CO, IL in 1871 and they had 2 children, Eliza and William. In 1880 the 4 are on the Osawatomie, Miami CO, KS census - but then in 1883 she married my great great grandfather, Miles Oliver Cook.

Together Miles and Anna moved to Oklahoma and had 5 children - before Anna died she traveled back to Paoli, KS to visit her son, William Kester - where she died on Aug 30, 1911. She is buried at OSage Cemetery in Agra, OK - her husband Miles died in December of that year. They were early settlers in the town of Agra.

I found a census from 1870 in Danville, Vermillion, IL that shows their family
William - 53, farmer - born in NY
Elizabeth - 46 - born in Ohio
William - 21, son
Annie - 16, daughter
Lilly - 8, daughter - I believed she married a Kester also.
Betsy - 6, daughter

Anyone who has info and would like to share on these two families - I'd really appreciate the help - thanks.
