bjh225:
I agree and have removed everything ANNABLE from my tree. I have Edward Bumpus's spouse Hannah as "Hannah Unknown" until further notice from a real documented discovery that changes "Unknown" to her real maiden name. (Indian name I'm hoping)! This has been a very informative forum. Thank you all for your contributions. They have been very much appreciated.
LindaJae

Doing more reading and research I believe many are confusing the two Hannah Annables. There is Hannah Annable
b 1602 "sister" of Anthony Annable (she is the one that is said to have married Edward Bumpus) that came with her brother Anthony to America with his wife and one daughter Sarah. Then there is Hannah Annable b 1625 Anthony's second child but first born in America. I found she seems to be the one that married Thomas Bowerman m 1643/44. Because Edward & Hannah Bumpas's first child was born 1631. When your Hannah that married Thomas was 6 yrs old. Seems everyone is mixing dates and confusing the Hannah's. It's still very possible our Hannah Bumpus is still just HANNAH (Indian), a 3rd Hannah and has no connection to the ANNABLES. They are just connecting Edward's Hannah because of her name being Hannah. I understand Indian's when marrying white they took white names and if she was Indian she liked and chose the name Hannah. So the Hannah that married Edward is either Anthony's sister or an Indian maiden that took the name Hannah. The search is still on! It may be easier to search real documents (and not "he said she said") and find what happened to Hannah Annable, Anthony's sister for real to finally rule her out. Need to find who she married or what happened to her. Need to get her off our charts. Very good to hear Edouad/Edward's wife's maiden name cant be found-to me that is good news. Just makes our belief stronger his wife was an Indian Maiden.

Edward Bumpass did NOT marry Hannah Annabel. It is proven that she married Thomas Bowerman. The records ONLY show that Edouad Bompasse's wife was named Hannah.......and no surname is known for her. If you insist as listing her as his wife, then you do so in error.

There have been many researchers that have tried to find the maiden name of Edouad Bompasse but there is no record for her.

Hi,
I found Deckard-Alberts tree it links my grandmother
Lillian Bump to Edward and Hannah. I am working with
geneologists fo join the Daughters of The American
Revolution and while doing the lineage back to that
point I became interested in Anthony Annable and Jane Mumford parents of Hannah Annable (married Edward Bompasse).
I found Anthony Annable and William in an english family tree. It went back to Mathiev De Lorraine marriage to Bertha Von Hohenstaufen. Put William annable is search box
you will find http://WWW.dianenet.com/familytree/york/aqwg334.htm
It goes back to Frederick III "barbaross" Holy Roman Emperor in 1122. follow his childred to Phillip II Holy Roman Emperor then it goes to Mathieu de lorraine and bertha
then to Anthony Annable, his childred William Annable down the line.
I just read the passenger list for the ship Anne and Little James. It left London, England with Master William Pierce and arrived in Plymouth,MA in June or July 1623.
List of passengers included these:
ANNABLE, Anthony from Cambridge, bound for Plymouth.
Settled in Scituate.
ANNABLE, Jane Mumford, his wife
ANNABLE, Sarah his daughter
ANNABLE, Hannah his daughter.

No other person listed with that surname.

There is no record that shows that Edward Bumpass married Hannah Annabel. Many research hours have been spent trying to find his wife's maiden name by excellent researchers. Regardless of what your family papers show he did not marry a woman with the maiden name of Hannah Annabel. Had he married an Indian woman then it surely would be in the records. Edward was a young man when he arrived on the ship Fortune in Nov 1621. They have estimated that he was probably 16 yrs old.
If you will read the records you will be able to see when he was granted land and cattle.

My ancestor, William Bumpass, did serve in the Rev War and drew a pension for his service.

Where did you find that Edward's wife was Native American? This I never have found in 20 years of research. Is Hannah the daughter of Edward & Hannah who was sent out of town along with her "pimp"? Marshfield printed records are online. I would suggest that you order the films of town records from LDS if you have not done so. I cannot read them now-too old, me not the films.

In my research I found the English Hannah Annable b 1602 and her "brother" Anthony Annable b 1599, his wife Jane Momford and one daughter came over together on the Anne. Her father is William 1573-1614 and mother is Hannah Barker or Baker 1575-1615 both died a year apart when Hannah was young. I'll look for male relatives of my GGGrandmother Tabatha Bumpus b 1831 (my connection) and see if any of them did DNA. Thank you for the encouragement to keep looking by reminding me that many still have this question about Hannah. I'll keep you all posted if I find something significant.

I am researching the Bump, Bumpus,Bumpas and Bompasse.
My family has old papers on Edward Bompasse ,his parents
were John Bompasse and Ann Brodforde. I researching
the Barnstable families and all early settlers of Plymouth.
Evidently my Edward landed on the Fortune in 1621.
He married Hannah Annable. Her parents were Anthony Annable and Jane Momford. I traced a lot thru the Deckart-Alberts
family tree on Ancestory .com It linked to my grandmother.
My mom is 93 and gave me the old papers that her mom's sister was given that someone in the family traced. Maybe
were long lost relatives. Who knows. I have geneologist helping me trace the one's back to the American Revolution so I can belong to the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Good luck on yours. Karen

A Question For The Bumpas Experts

Who are the parents of Nancy Bumpass (1824 – 1900)?

Nancy Bumpass was born Feb 10, 1824 in North Carolina, exact location unknown. The first record of Nancy occurs with the marriage bond of Richard Baker bearing the notation of his marriage to Nancy Bumpass in November 1849 at Edgecombe County, NC. She next appears in the 1850 U.S. census for Nash County, NC with her husband, Richard Baker.

Nancy has been identified by other researchers as the daughter of John Bumpas and Martha Etheridge. However, to date we have been unable to find definitive documentation of this relationship.

There is a John Bumpas listed in the 1840 U.S. census for Nash County who is of the age group 70-80. He has one female of the proper age group (10-15) to be Nancy. There are two males (15–20 and a female (40–50) also reported. We are unable to locate him in the 1850 census.

Documentation of the marriage between John Bumpas and Martha Etheridge exists in a number of sources. The will of Caleb Etheridge probated in 1826 identifies a daughter Martha as the wife of John Bumpers. The marriage appears in the Ancestry.com database Edgecombe County Vital Records (1720-1880), and is also recorded in “Ten Generations of The Etheredge – Etheridge – Ethridge Family of America”, Compiled by Fae Alice Etheredge and Ema Lee Etheredge Tipton.

There is a will written Oct 11, 1849 and proven November 1855 in Edgecombe County for John Bumpas. The will identifies daughters Phebre, Mary, Martha, wife Martha, and son John W Bumpas (as executor). This will is consistent with a marriage to Martha Etheridge, but poses a problem with regards to Nancy in that she is not mentioned.

Some researchers report that Martha Etheridge was the second wife of John Bumpas. There are records dated 1800 in Halifax County of a John Bumpas as married to a Sarah Crawley, widow of Aires Jones Crawley. These records pertain to the settlement of the Crawley estate and appear in "Abstracts of Deeds, Halifax County, North Carolina 1802-1807". If this is the same John Bumpas and Sarah was his first wife, she must have died prior to 1826 when John is known to have been married to Martha Etheridge. However, we are left with the possibility of a small window in time where Sarah could have been the mother of Nancy Bumpass.

While the birth of Nancy in 1824 appears consistent with the marriage of John Bumpas & Martha Etheridge in that the marriage occurred prior 1826 (Caleb Etheridge will) and lasted until after 1849 (John Bumpas will), there is no proof of Nancy as their daughter. Indeed, there is a chance that Nancy is the daughter of John Bumpas and Sarah Crawley. All we can say is that the timeline is consistent with either scenario.

To confuse things further, the Marriage & Death Notices from the Wilmington, NC Tri-Weekly Commercial (Thurs 27 Sept 1855) that states John Bumpas died on Sept 17, 1855 in Nash County, at the reported age of 98 years. It was also reported that his wife Nancy died one day later at the age of 90 years. If these are all the same John Bumpas, then there is a third wife Nancy, last name unknown. For all this to be true, Martha Etheridge would have to die after 1849 when John wrote his will in Edgecombe County, and well before 1855 when he is shown as married to Nancy LNU. Again, all we can say is that the timelines appear consistent with the scenario but we are no closer to proving the parentage of Nancy Bumpass.

We have a bit more on Nancy Bumpass herself. She was the mother to six children; Laura (1851 – 1910), Mary Frances (1853 – 1922), John Henry (1855 – 1938), Martha Ann (1857 – 1947), James Carter (1859 – 1931), and Richard Walter (1870 – 1953). The family appears to have always lived in the area of Whitakers, NC and records appear in both Nash and Edgecombe counties. Her husband, Richard Baker died in 1875 at Whitakers, NC. In 1886, Nancy divided up a 25 acre plot giving each of her six children a plot of a little over 4 acres. Nancy died Jan 28, 1900. Nancy, Richard Baker and their children are all buried in the Baker family cemetery on Fisher Road, Whitakers, NC.

So, back to the original problem; who were the parents of Nancy Bumpass? Are they John Bumpas & Sarah Crawley, John Bumpas & Martha Etheridge, some other John Bumpas, or some other Bumpas altogether? Is the John Bumpas identified in our timeline all one person, or have we become confused and merged a number of individuals with the same name (a very real possibility)?

We are searching for documentation and information that proves the parentage of Nancy Bumpass. If her father is indeed John Bumpas, then any additional information on him will also be of considerable assistance.

Thanks, Mike Hallett
mhallett@socal.rr.com

Trying to trace my Great Grandpas heritage. John Thomas Bumpas would have been born around 1880-1890. He married Hallie Roxie Lockwood and they had 3 kids that we know of...sons John and George and daughter Irene. All are deceased, Irene just dying earlier this year. Unfortunately we didn't get much family history from any of them. We have no information about Grandpa Bumpas.Grandma Hallie Bumpas told me her and Great Grandpa had traveled on a covered wagon west to head to California but ran out of money and settled in Arizona. I was very little when she told her stories and didn't write the details down. I don't even know where they came from. Any chance you could connect them with your Bumpas family? Any info would be great and I am about to become a Grandma in March 2001 and I want to give my Grandson our family tree if I can.
Thank you so much for your message board. My fax number is 602-996-1121 if you want to fax me anthing and my e mail is jacqsbac@home.com.
Thanks Again....Jacque (a distant relative?)

One of my great-great-grandmothers was a lady named Lemira Bump. In looking thru Ancestry.com I was able to find a website that had a lot of info. about her genealogy (however, some of it has proven to be false.) She was directly descended from a man by the name of Edward Bumpas (Edouard Bompasse) who arrived in America in 1621 on the ship Fortune. he did marry a lady named Hannah, however it was NOT Hannah Annable, as one website she is on asserts.
Does any of this ring any possible bells for you?
Genealogy is:
Edward Bumpas Hannah ?
John Bompasse Sarah Hunter
Jeremiah Bumpus Jean Lovell
Jeremiah Bumpus Judith Randall
Lot Bumpus Susannah Perry
Admiral Bump/us Julia Ann ?
Lemira Bump/us George Philip Lee
George Herbert Lee Anna Sether
Ann Georgia Lee John Iversen
Warren Iversen Viola Schirmer
Barbara Lee Iversen
that's how I got here.
prior info on Edward (edouard bompasse)

are you aware that he came to America in 1621 on the ship Fortune? he was a young man and unmarried at this time.
I know it has been asserted that he married Hannah Annable - but in searching records FOR Hannah Annable I discovered discrepancies. I don't recall exactly but I think if she DID marry it was recorded as someone else. The Hannah that Edward Bumpas married I do not believe was Hannah Annable.
you might also check with mbumpus@msn.com
he seems to know a bit about edouard as well. however, he believes edward married hannah annable but, as i said, that is NOT documented to MY satisfaction.
regards and good luck,
Barb Iversen

in the little bit of research that i have done on Hannah Annable she did NOT marry a man named Edward Bumpas. I don't recall exactly anymore but if she did marry at all it was NOT to edward bumpas. about her being native american i have no idea. but of her having a connection with the genealogical line of the bumpas/bumpus/bump . . . family i have SERIOUS reservations. i'd encourage you to look further. perhaps dave_lossos@prodigy.net might be of assistance here.

Regard,
Barb Iversen
descendant of Lemira Bump (b. 4-24-1837)

hi barb, where did you get your source regarding hannah ananble was not married to edward bumpasse/bumpas,bumpus?? according to paul and steven bumpus of plymouth mass. who have a bumpus family web site starting with edward and hannah and along with the names of their 13 children. paul and steve have done extensive research on the family. my cousen who is now diseased also has done research going back to edward and hannah. my cousen also indicated that hannah was a native american, although at present that can't be substaniated! :( my brother believes at the time the men of that time period did not have many choices to take a women for a wife so it makes sense alot of men of that time period took native american for their wives and also might have given them anglo saxon names is why i believe its hard to prove the the native american connection to the bumpus family tree. i would like to know your thoughts on this matter.tom

I am trying at this point to find where I saw that Hannah Annable was married to someone else. Likely it will be found on one of my "Family Forest" CD's or perhaps ARL 2000. But I must admit that I am a bit embarrassed for saying anything. I have difficulty remembering specifics if I don't have them written down. I will certainly search whatever I found that led me to believe that he did not in fact marry Hannah Annable.
However, if she were indeed Native American, that may also explain why the records indicate Edward Bumpas was married to a "Hannah unknown" - given the fact that that may not have been an "accepted" practice even then - do you think so? Or am I guilty of putting 20thC views on the 17thC?
I will locate my source and answer back. Thank you for your response.

Barb Iversen

I'm curious, why has it ever been supposed that she may have been Native American? In other words, what caused somebody to think that in the first place? Was it partly bc Edward did seem to find a wife rather quickly? Or was it perhaps bc the name Annable does not appear on passenger lists from either the Mayflower or the Fortune which she would've HAD to have been on for her to have been here? What about the passsenger list for those who arrived in Jamestown in 1607? Could she have been here since then? Or perhaps BORN at Jamestown? As I recall I do remember questioning "How did this Hannah Annable arrive? She couldn't have been here already" - I was assuming that she was English. Wouldn't it seem to you that if she was not somehow part of the Jamestown group that that must mean she was Native American bc i believe "ANnable" does not appear on passenger lists of the Mayflower or the Fortune? Wouldn't THAT be sufficient "proof" that she had to have been Native? Thanks
Barb

partial answer about Hannah annable

Hannah annable is listed as a passenger on the Anne that arrived in 1623. If this was indeed the lady that Edward Bumpas married then any suspicions of her being Native American should thereby be thwarted, wouldn't you think? This information came from: http://members.aol.com/calebj/mayflower.html

I believe this is also the site where I found some further info re: hannah annable that led me to believe she did NOT in fact marry edward bumpas. i will continue searching and report again.

Barb Iversen

edward bumpas-hannah annable

I've heard it rumored that hannah annable had native american ancestry. however, IF hannah ANNABLE from the anne was indeed the "hannah" that edward bumpus married, then her parents are listed as anthony annable and jane momford, both of whom appear to have strict english backgrounds.
so my question is this:
was there something about hannah's appearance that caused there to be rumors about her ethnicity that have been so far spread as to exist even still today, now some 4 centuries later?
or, perhaps did edward b. have some children by an Indian maiden that edward and HANNAH raised as their own?
does anyone know? and since record keeping appears to have been a bit "hit-n-miss", so to speak, in those days, if Indian ancestry is not noted for any of their children, how would anyone be able to FIND that answer today?
also, i'm not positive that edward DID in fact marry hannah ANNABLE. i've seen, i've forgotten exactly where but i'm still looking, "evidence" that would suggest otherwise. where is the proof that hannah ANNABLE was the name of the "hannah" - maiden name unknown - that edward bumpus(as) married?
thank you
