History of Ultima Thule

Ultima Thule is Greek for the ultimate or last place - it referred to
the northernmost part of the habitable ancient world.

Ultima Thule in Sevier Co. is the last place in Arkansas before you
come to the Oklahoma line.

If you were traveling West in a covered wagon on the Fort Towson trail
in the late 1800's, you would come to Ultima Thule just before you
exited the United States -- beyond was Indian Territory. It was the
border crossing town into Indian Territory on the most traveled road
through south Arkansas.

The Fort Towson trail went from the crossing of the Mississippi River
at Point Chicot,
through Camden, AR, through Washington, AR (the Confederate Capital of
AR during the Civil War), through Paraclifta (the dominate town in
Sevier Co. before the railroad), and through Ultima Thule before
entering Indian Territory and going to Fort Towson, the major western
military outpost in southeast Indian Territory.

William appears to be in the following family:
1.1.1.9 David BLUE (ca1774-1844), m1.1796 Alice DAWSON, m2.1836 Mary "Polly" COOPER (b.ca1790). David was born in Hampshire Co. VA and, when he became of age, he left Virginia to move west with many of his brothers and sisters. He and his brother, Abraham, first went to Nelson Co. KY, where David married Alice (Ally) and Abraham married Sally DRAKE. Ally was a daughter of Thomas DAWSON. The next record we have for David is his signature on a "Petition of Citizens of Dearborn Co. (IN)", dated 13 Feb 1806, asking for "a post road from Cincinnati to Lawrenceburgh, thence to mouth of Kentucky River". Then in March 1807 his name, along with that of his brother William, appears on a census list for Dearborn Co. On 23 Apr 1808 he purchased 151 acres of land in Dearborn Co. (Sect. 2, Twp. 5, Range 1W) from George Crist. Three years later he sold that land (151 acres) to John Crandon. This land was near that which his brother, Abraham, owned and sold in 1810. David then made three purchases of land near Laughery Creek in what is now Ohio County IN; two (1812 and 1817) in the west half of Sect. 27, Twp. 4, Range 2W; and one (1814) in the SW part of Sect. 22, Twp. 4, Range 2W. In 1809 he received a Federal land grant for the SW qtr of Sect. 1, Twp. 5, Range 2W. He is described as living in Butler Co. OH at that time. In 1813 he assigned this patent to _____ Dawson. Federal census records indicate that David was living in Dearborn Co. in 1820 and 1830. In 1829 he purchased several lots in the town of Hartford from John Livingston. Over the time period from 1829 through 1837, David sold his property in Dearborn Co. and by 1840 he had moved to Ralls Co. MO, where he was living near his brother Jesse. Alice appears to have died between 1830 and 1840, for in the 1840 census David's wife is two decades younger than the wife he had in 1830. His marriage to Mary took place in Ralls Co.and the 1850 census of Ralls Co. MO shows a Mary BLUE, age 60, living near David's grandchildren. He may have m.1833 Sarah ANDRES in Union Co. IN. David died in Ralls Co. MO and his estate was settled in that county in 1846. Son William did not receive a share of the estate, so he probably died before that time with no heirs of his own.
There was an unidentified David BLUE living in Hamilton Co. OH at the time this David was living in neighboring Dearborn Co. IN. The Hamilton Co. David had a wife named Abigail, probably Abigail WITHAM. He was a taxpayer in Columbia Twp., Hamilton Co. in 1808 and 1810.
1.1.1.9.1* John BLUE (b.ca1797), m. Rebecca _____ (b.ca1802).
1.1.1.9.2* Margaret BLUE (b.ca1800), m. Joshua WILSON (b.1800). She was age 16/26 in 1820 census.
1.1.1.9.3 William BLUE (b.ca1801), m.1828 (prob) Mary ROSBERRY.
1.1.1.9.4* Nancy BLUE (ca1809-1867), m.1831 Michael McGUIRE (1807-1854).
1.1.1.9.5* Maria BLUE (b.1810+), m.1831 William McGUIRE (ca1809-1850).
(Census records indicate that David and Alice may have had as many as five sons and three daughters.)

The marriage of William to Mary ROSBERRY is deduced from the marriage record in Dearborn Co. IN. The date (1828) does not match the ca1825 birth of Meredith BLUE, so that presents a problem. Also, William in TX was married to Elizabeth, not Mary. Of course she could be Mary Elizabeth ROSBERRY.

You can trace the ancestry of David BLUE, above, on the BLUE website.

13. Jo Watts, “Family Legend.”
Quote from Jo Watts this was a Family Legend in her family, her father first told me of this, I haven’t checked it out yet though but it is interesting,
“Notes for SUEL BUNCH:
Family legend states that the wife of this Suel Bunch, as a child, was stolen by Indians and not found and rescued for many years. The family story goes on to say that the book written by Alan Lemay and subsequent movie, "The Searchers", starring John Wayne, was based on this story.”

According to the McCurtain Democrat Newspaper she died 11 November
1926..Her name was written Mrs. Parihma Bunch &
she lived at Eagletown..Didn't find an obit but it's possible it was
missed..It was listed in a little column where they only gave the names
& date of death..
15. David Bunch, May 2000.
“At age 51 Suel married Hannah Mullins,” quote from Hannah and Suel’s grandson David Bunch.

And even if a marriage record isn’t found Suel BLUE/BUNCH lived with Hannah Mullins for 7 years in and around Ardmore and Madill OK, and that I believe is considered common law in the state of OKlahoma.
