PHILIP PURBAUGH was the sixth child and third son of Philipp Burbach. He was only an infant when the family moved from Lancaster Co. to Bedford Co., Pa. in late 1788 or early 1789, for he was born in Lancaster Co. (1) and baptized in the home with the twins. Susannah and Daniel in Londonderry Twp., Bedford Co., now Northampton YTwp., Somerset Co., Pa. (2). He was confirmed in Mull's German Reformed Church on Pentacost 1814 (3). He was a farmer all his life living first in Allegheny Twp., Somerst Co., Pa. then by 1830 living in Londonderry Twp., Bedford Co., Pa. (4) and by 1834 back again in Southampton Twp., Somerset Co., Pa. where their daughter Catherine was baptized (5). To settle his estate after his death his real estate was bought by his son-in-law, Solomon Conn, for $239.00 (6). As the family name changed from Burbach to Poorbaugh and Purbaugh, Philip was the only son who chose the spelling Purbaugh. In later generations members of other lines, as they moved away from Somerset Co., also chose that spelling.
