Hi,
The father of Cyrus Bunting was Cuthbert Bunting. There are records of the family in the courthouse in Wayne County, Ohio. Cuthbert and some of the family are buried in the Shreve, Ohio cemetery. I have pictures of Cuthbert's grave stone taken a few years ago. Cuthbert's son, Cyrus had a son named Mahlon.
Thomas

I just saw your letter on rootsweb. I don't know if Cathbert is the same as Cuthbert. Cuthbert is the name of my g-g-grandfather's brother. Cuthbert was born in 1915 and lived in Wayne county Ohio from about 1830 until his death. He had a lot of children. They all stayed in the
Wayne County, OH. Cuthbert and wifeare buried in a cemetery in Shreve, Ohio. One of hsi daughters, Harriet Ann, married James O'brien and they lived in Erie County, Pa. Where several of my Bunting relatives lived. This information can be found in the court house in Wayne Co. Ohio.
Thomas Bunting

Hello Paul,
"The Buntings" were a very minor branch of my family tree, there was a small overlap where William and Charles Pigram (brothers of my relative Emily Pigram) married Buntings - I think. These Buntings were from the London area, although originally from Norfolk/Suffolk/Cambrige area. I had made contact with someone who was more directly related to the Buntings and put them in contact with Michael Oelrichs. I have a feeling that there was no connection, but Michael would be the best person to contact about this. If you are having trouble contacting Michael I could put you in touch with my contact.

Best wishes
Les Jones

Hi Ken:

Thank you for the update. One thing I am trying to be certain of is that Levin J. Bunting, Sr, born about 1867, and later married to Mary Short, and father of (among others) Mary H Bunting, Levin Bunting, Jr, Harry Bunting, and Hattie Bunting, was a son of William James Robbins Bunting. Back in 1870, the census for Baltimore Hundred shows a Levi Bunting (no N for Levin), age 11, born in MD as a son of William James Robbins and Mary Bunting. The househould also includes a Levin Smith (with the N), age 9. William James' wife is Mary Smith and she is seven years older than William James. I believe she is the daughter of the first keeper of the light at Fenwick Island Lighthouse, and I am thinking Levin Smith, 9, and Mary Smith, 5, are possibly her brother and sister, perhaps orphaned and living with her and her husband.

My interest in the Bunting's is that my father's first wife was the Mary H. Bunting, daughter of Levin J., Sr. Levin Sr is the sea captain featured in articles on the Ocean City Life Saving Museum website. Dad had one son, William Wyatt, with Mary Bunting. They separated in the early 1930's and he married my mother about 1934. I never met William (Billy) even though he was a half brother. He died about 1969, before our father did in 1971. I know William and his wife had one daughter, Janis, born about 1948 with whom I went to school, but have since lost track of. She of course, would be Levin Bunting's great grand daughter. I suspect she married a man named William Drager and they live in NJ, but nothing concrete on this.

I would love anymore info you may have. Where do you fit in in the Bunting line?

Regards,

Harry Wyatt,
Perkasie, PA

Hi, we have exchanged e-mail before and I have just seen your July message. In your list of John Jackson's children (he was known as John), Mary was Mary A. born as you say in 1842 but I have nothing else about her. In addition to the children you list, Jane Bunting in her genealogy "Buntings of the Eastern Shore" also adds the two names Clarence and Prudence w/o dates. Elisha T was my ggrandfather, a mariner, and was lost at sea. I can give you descendants for him, John Jackson Jr (also called John), Wm James Robins (called James), Nancy Ellen and Levi.
I see from follow-up mail that you got the connection for George Avery Bunting. Many of us knew him since he was a frequent visitor to relatives in the area.
Regarding our ancestor Jonathan, most recent evidence indicates he was born in Accomack Co VA but to date his parentage has not been established.
Let me know if I can add anything else that will help.
Ken Bunting

Hi Joni:

I wanted to let you know that I linked William James Robbins Bunting and George Avery Bunting (inventor of Noxzema). The common ancester is Jonathan Bunting, born about 1754, probably in DE. Among Jonathan and his wife Catherine's four sons were John (b abt 1775) and Jackson (b abt 1789). The line to Geroge Avery runs: John>Elijah Bunting (1814)>Lemuel W. H. Bunting (1846)>George Avery Bunting (1870). The line to William James Robbins is: Jakcson>John Jackson Bunting> ( 1820)>William James Robbins Bunting (1846).

Regards,

Harry

Hi,

Makes sense this Anna Wyatt is from Delaware. In 1900 Thomas Short was in Kenton, Kent, Delaware, with wife Mary E. and children.

I haven't found him either in the 1910 census. I've had this happen before with the 1910 census. My great grandparents were on the 1900, 1915 (State), 1920 and 1930 census, but I haven't found them anywhere in the 1910. Oh, well.

Good luck in your searching.

Joni

Joni:

Thanks for the update. I don't believe this is the Annie Wyatt I am looking for, but, this one might be a relation anyway.

When I find Thomas W. Short in the 1920 and 1930 census, his wife Anna shows as from Delaware, and her father and mother as well. The Annie I'm trying to find is from Maryland, born about 1870, and would be the daughter of Minos Wyatt and Emma Powell Wyatt.

However, there is an Annie Wyatt who was born about 1870 in Delaware. She is the daughter of Elijah and Nancy Wyatt. In 1880 they lived in Gumboro, Sussex Couty. If it is this Annie Wyatt who married Thomas W. Short, then she is a distant cousin. We would meet at Absolem Wyatt - Annie's heritage is Absolem>Robert>Elijah>Annie. I am Absolem>James>Minos>Charles>Harry, Sr>Harry, Jr (me).

We're all cousins somehow.

I cannot, however, locate Thomas W. Short in 1900 or 1910. I do find him in 1880, age 30, with his first wife, Mary E and children Ada J, 6, Alfred C, 4, and George D, 2. Their name may be misspelled in 1900 and 1910. I've tried a number of options, no luck yet.

There is a 63 year old Thomas W in Dagsboro who I am guessing is his father.

Great to hear from you, and best regards,

Harry

Harry,

I don't have much info on Anna. Not sure who her parents were.

Thomas W. Short, Jr., first married Mary Elizabeth Rogers in 1872. She died sometime after the census in 1900. I can't find Thomas in the 1910 census. By 1920 on that census and the 1930 census he was with Anna. Someone else on the internet made mention that his second wife was Anna Wyatt. I'm sure they didn't have kids as no kids were listed on either census, and in 1920 Thomas was 68. Anna was about 20 years younger (being born about 1871), but I don't know where for sure.

Let me know if you track her down. I can't even find a marriage record for them.

Joni

Hi Joni:

Thanks for your reply.

Do you have any info on the Anna Wyatt that married Thomas Windsor Short, Jr? I had a great aunt Annie or Anna Wyatt, born about 1870 in Worcester and have no clue what became of her, who she married, etc. Her sister, Lilly Wyatt, another great aunt, married Charles S. Powell and they owned the Monticello Hotel in Ocean City, MD in the 1920s, 1930s.

Levin Bunting, Sr, who I suspect is Levi, the son of James R. Bunting, also married a Short - Mary Short. By 1930, when Levin was 63 and Mary was 55, Mary's mother, Ellen, 83 had moved in with them. Her sister, Kate, 53, also lived with them and had for some years.

It's also interesting that James R. Bunting's mother, Gatty, was a Holloway. The Lilly Wyatt and Charles Powell I refer to above had a daughter, Etta Mae Powell who married Arthur Lee Holloway. Arthur Lee's parents were Elijah and Julia A Holloway. Elijah's father was a Daniel Holloway, I believe. Now I'll have to go back and see if there is a Gatty in that line.

One way or another, we are all related, and often in several ways.

I'll keep in touch. Let me know what you have on Anna Wyatt.

Kindest regards,

Harry Wyatt,
Perkasie, PA

Hi, Harry,

This must be my lucky week for getting responses from posts from awhile ago. It does work! Let me tell you what I have on Mary E. Smith and William James Robins Bunting.

Mary E. Smith was the daughter of John Smith and Amelia Trader Smith of Nanticoke Hundred. You can see the family in 1850 in Nanticoke and in 1860 in Baltimore Hundred. John and his son, Levin or Levi, were the first lighthouse keepers on Fenwick Island!

John and Amelia's children included: Sarah, John, Rufus, Levin, Mary E., James Andrew, David R., Milly, William T., Purnell and Hester. Either Purnell or Hester were not one of their children as they only had ten. I have followed most of the children for quite awhile. My direct ancestor is Sarah who is my 2nd great grandmother. Now for Mary E.:

She married William James Robins Bunting, son of John Jackson Bunting and Gatty Holloway. John and Gatty had the following children: Elisha T., 1837/Mary, 1842/John Jackson, 1844;James Robins, 1846; William James Robin, 1846; Nancy Ellen, 1850; and Levi, 1855.

The two Smith children I'm not sure of. They are not Mary E. Smith Bunting's siblings, but I'm sure they are part of the family. I haven't spent a lot of time on them.

I think the name Levin and Levi were interchangeable as was my 2nd great grandmother, Sarah/Sallie.

I do have one Anna Wyatt in my tree. She married Thomas Windsor Short, Jr. His father Sr., was married to a Smith.

I did also check and I do not have a Lemuel W. H. Bunting in my tree so I don't think I could help you there, but considering all of the other Bunting names, I wouldn't be a bit surprised. I also have seen them as Buntons in different census records.

I am hoping that one of the descendents in Mary E. Smith Bunting's tree would have done some research that will help me. I have Sarah/Sallie Smith's children but I cannot find out who she married. She would have been married around 1856 and he died in 1859. She had a daughter in 1857 and a son in 1859. As their last names were also Smith, I believe she probably married a Smith also. More and more it appears it may have been one of the young men who went to sea from that area.

Anyway, if I can help you any more, please let me know.

Joni
Calgary, AB

Re: BUNTING, JAMES R. AND SMITH, MARY E.

Hi Joni:

I think your James and Mary are the same James and Mary Bunting listed in the 1870 census for Baltimore Hundred. That listing shows the following members of dwelling #4:

Bunting, James, age 23, Farmer, born DE
Bunting, Mary E, age 30, Keeping house, born DE
Bunting, Josiah, age 2, at home, born MD
Bunting, Gatty, age 48, keeping house, born MD
Bunting, Nancy E, age 14, at home, born MD
Bunting, Levi, age 11, at home, born MD
Smith, Levin, age 9, at home, born DE
Smith, Mary, age 5, at home, born MD

This one has me confused. I am thinking Gatty Bunting, 48 may be James' mother, and Nancy E, 14 may be Gatty's daughter and James' sister. Assuming James' wife is Mary E. Smith, then Levin Smith, 9 and Mary Smith 5 are probably Mary's siblings. The family may have taken to calling Levin Bunting Levi so as not to confuse him with Levin Smith.

I believe the Levi Bunting, age 11, above, is actually Levin Bunting. There is a Levin Bunting, 18, in the 1880 census for Worcester, MD, shown as the son of James R. Bunting, 32, and Mary E Bunting, 39. There is also a Mary Bunting, 13 in the family as well as Joseph, 11, Jackson, 9, Elijah 7, Charles 3, and one other I can't make out. These are all in St. Martins. The 13 year old Mary may be the Mary Smith from 1870, and Joseph is probably Josiah.

I'm certain that this is the same person who appears as Levin J. Bunton, 33 in the 1900 census in Ocean City, MD. His daughter, Mary H. Bunting, born Dec, 1894 (actually 1895) was my father's first wife. They had a son, William Wyatt, born 1919, who died before 1971. He and his wife had at least one daughter, Janis M Wyatt, born about 1948.

Also, Levin J. Bunting had a son, Levin J. Bunting, Jr, who married Annie Spencer and had a son, Fred Keller Bunting. Eventually later Buntings have married later Wyatt's (but from a different branch, far as I know)

My father remarried in the 1930s to my mother.

I've been trying to determine if this Bunting branch is related to that of Lemuel W.H. Bunting, also of Worcester Co. He was father of George Avery Bunting, inventor of Noxzema.

What are your thoughts on all this.

Harry Wyatt,
Perkasie, PA

BUNTING, NANCY ANN FROM PA OR VA TO OHIO

Nancy Ann Bunting (born abt 1826, PA) married James Scott (b. abt 1820, VA) in Feb 1843 in Seneca County, Ohio. They lived in Williams and Columbiana Counties, OHio. Nancy Ann had her last known child in 1864 there and did not appear on the 1870 Census with rest of her family there. The Scott's came from PA near the VA line and one of James brothers was b. in VA. Nancy Ann's children's names were:Timothy Burch-he died in IN; David; James M.; Malinda;Amos; Albert C.;and Electa b.1864-all were born in Ohio.
Nancy Ann Bunting's father-in-law was probably a Thomas Scott b. abt 1790 in PA and his wife may have also been a Nancy Ann Bunton or Bunting of VA or PA. Any information appreciated and am always willing to share. Thank you.

Can anybody expand what I know of the death of Richard Bunting who was an Apprentice on his father's fishing smack Adventure and was drowned with six other fishermen when it was hit by the SS Woodstock off Flamborough, Yorkshire in August 1881. Was John Bunting, the ships Master and co-owner, the same John Bunting who was married to Mary Short and had lived in Grimsby? Could this be the reason a number of John and Mary's daughters started to use the surname Short?

Roger

Hello L.B.Hayes,
My wife is also decended from Anthony and the following is what I have on Willia and his forebears. Perhaps we can compare notes and find more information.
Bill Porter
The “possible Ancestry” of Anthony Bunting of Matlock, as given by Mr. Justice is: Anthony Bunting of Matlock 1546; William Bunting, Exchequer Deponent, 1582. Children of William of 1582 are 1) William Bunting, married 8-19-1638 to Clemence Rosson at Matlock; 2) Anthony Bunting, married September 21, 1641 to Ellen Barker at Matlock; 3) Elizabeth Bunting, married May 1, 1642 to William Ball. The marriage dates are from the Parish House in Matlock, Derbyshire, England. Bunting field was the seat of the family Ref: Elizabeth Potts Koleda, "Anthony Bunting and Ellen Barker of Matlock, England", 1980.
The Bunting ancestral home is reported in Derbyshire - Bunting Field, given to John Bunting in 1285 as a land grant from King Edward I. It was in the family 640 years and is still there with BF on the gate. Obtained from e-mail at twotwotwo@webtv.net on 27 July 2001.

L.B. Hayes, I am a descendant of Job Bunting. I cannot seem to get anywhere regarding the antecedents. I am stuck at Anthony Bunting's father William. My family verbal history has French Hugenots escaping to Scotland then marrying into the Buntings in England. The only thing I'm certain of is
the trail from my Father back to Job Bunting.
Any further history of the Derbyshire Buntings would be greatly appreciated.

I am sorry it took so long to write back. I just noticed the message. My e-mail is BillCurryCMT at MSN dot com. Just in case this message gets filtered. I started researching the Molinari's just recently, unforunately. My girlfriend is Nancy Molinari, and she has many of her family burried in there. The family was from Atlantic City and Ventnor. I have been researchin g my tree since 1985. At the present, I have about 260 of her people. The names you gave me do not match anything I have unfortunately. I am not sure of the next step, but when I learn more about her family tree I will contact you. Her Grandfather was Rocco Luigi Molinari, from Italy (B.1891) and his wife was Mary Christine Aliantro (B.1898). There is another Molinari family in Atlantic City that is no relation, as the name Molinari in Italy is like Smith in the US.
Happy Hunting! I hope one of us find something.
Bill Curry

Hello,
There is a Michele Clemente, died 1926, in the Atlantic City cemetary. Is there anything that you can tell me about his wife and children? I am particularly interested in a connection to the Molinari family as I believe that he had a wife whose maiden name was Molinari who died around 1906-1910, but maybe a bit later.
This would be the mother of his son, Frank (b.1906), who was a shoemaker in Atlantic City. According to the 1910 census, he also had a daughter, Josephine, who was born around 1903.
There is a Maria Clemente, b. 1890, buried next to him, but she would have been too young to be the mother of Josephine and Frank. Given the 13 year difference in their ages is is possible that he was married prior to Maria and this first wife would be their mother.
Thank you for any light you can shed on this.

I am looking for information on my ancestor, Winnie Gray. She was a cook for the Bunting family in the Western Branch section of Norfolk County. She was listed on the 1880 census with this family. If you have any information that would help me, please let me know...thanks!
