Classification: Query
Surnames: Burch, Edwards
My Burches come from Surry Co, NC. Not all of the following has been primary source verified, though Delilah Burch's descendents I can personally vouch for.

Also, in the Greene County, Indiana library in Bloomfield, there is a binder of hand-typed Burch lineage that is hundreds of pages long. I've also seen a copy of that in the Bloomington, Monroe Co. library.

Notes for George Edwards:
From History of Greene Co.

George Edwards, one of the oldest settlers in Greene Co., and a resident of Beech Creek Township, was born in Surry Co., North Carolina, March 3, 1811. His parents were William and Delilah (Burch) Edwards, who bore a family of seven children, with which they came to Greene Co. in 1822. George Edwards, the subject of this sketch, received but little education, and that from the subscription schools kept in the log houses of those frontier days. In his starting out for himself, Mr. Edwards had the common misfortune of the day and place - that of being poor. By his wife, whose maiden name was Laodicea Burch, he is the father of eleven children - James, Sarah, Nancy, Martha, William B., Delilah B., George B., Samuel B., Mary I., Susan R., and Paris B. Their marriage was solemnized December 22, 1831. By hard work and economical living, Mr. Edwards has obtained a large competence, now owning about 700 acres of as good land as is in Beech Creek Township, besides a great amount he has given his children. His is probably the best improved farm in his township. Both he and his wife are members of the Baptist Church at Hebron, and are universally respected.

Notes for John Thomas Breeden:
THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene Co., Indiana, Thursday, December 31, 1914

DEATH'S HARVEST
The late Rev. John T. Breeden, the subject to this sketch, was born near Baltimore, Maryland, January 8, 1934. With his parents, he emigrated to Indiana in the year 1935 and located within sight of his present home, where he has since lived until after his late companion died a few years ago, since which time he has lived with his children. His wife died August 20, 1909.

He was married to Emily J. Edwards, September 28, 1854, to which union two children were born - William T. Breeden of Bloomington, and Mary J. Carmichael, of Edwards, Montana.

His first companion died July 14, 1861.

He was again married June 5, 1862 to Malinda Medaris, to which union five children were born - Haston Breeden of near Elwren, Hannah Burch of Surnatra, Montana; and Orlie Weaver, of near Solsberry, at whose home he died.

He was licensed as exhorter by the Methodist Episcopal church in the year 1864; having been converted and joined that church when he was young; was licensed as local preacher in 1873, and ordained as deacon in that church in 1880.

As a citizen and neighbor, Mr. Breeden had been few equals; his loyalty to every virture, such honesty, truth and purity of life was unsurpassed; his willingness to support everything that was designed to better the condition of his fellowman was plainly understood by all who knew him. No man ever had any reason to doubt what position he would take when the question of rightor wrong presented itself; he stood for something, and once taking a stand for what he thought was right he was immovable.

As a preacher of the gospel, he was strong, humble, plain and earnest. All who heard him preach was forced to believe he was a good man. He preached a gospel backed by a religious experience, and in his earnest and plain manner persuaded many to accept the higher life. HIs strongest point appeared to be on the occasions of funeral services. John Breeden's form was a welcome and familiar one, and his voice of sympathy and advice on such occasions has become to the people of his community almost indispensable. Not many homes or hearts he has not encouraged or paths he has not brightened.

He had great influence even at his ripe age over the young people; his friendly, out-stretched right hand with which he never failed to greet them, won them and held them fast with the greatest respect. Truly, like Paul, he had fought a good fight, and fought it nobly.

Truly, he is crowned at last.

He died at the home of Robert Weaver, his son-in-law, after a very short illness of pneumonia fever, December 23, 1914, leaving to mourn their loss, beside the children before mentioned, one brother Richard P. Breeden, of near Bloomfield, and Mrs. Drucilda Whaley of Elwren; also Perry Edwards, of Gosport, a nephew, who was also brought up by his fatherly hand.

Services were in charge of W. J. Ellis and Rev. Croft, of Bloomington, and the Masonic order of which he was a charter member. Internment at M.E. Chapel, December 24.
