While on his way to church at 10 oclock Sunday morning, the Rev. John L. BURCHARD, one of the oldest Methodist ministers of California, was struck and instantly killed by an electric car on Telegraph avenue near 16th St., Oakland. The deceased was ordained a minister at the age of 19 in Delaware. In the spring of 1860 he came across the plains and settled in San Francisco. From that time till his retirement he was a leader of the California Methodist conference. He served in nearly every town or city of any size in the State His latest charge was the Methodist church in Santa Rosa, but while there last May his wife died. The old man retained his commission but a short time, but in September, broken in health and spirit, came to live in quiet at the home of his son,. Besides Dr. BURCHARD, left 1 son, Attorney D.W. BURCHARD, of San Francisco, formerly of San Jose, and 1 daughter, Mrs. C.H. TOMBLEY.
My note: D.W. Burchard is Daniel Webster Burchard
Mrs. C.H. Tombley is Mary Burchard who married Charles H. Tombley
