As a follow-up my records of the 1860 Travis County, Texas property tax rolls also show a "Thomas Burchard" owning some land and city lots in Austin. Again, this Burchard is not in the census for that year, and is not shown as paying a poll tax which suggests he may have not been resident. It's possible I may have misread "Phineas" (or "Phenius") from the microfilm as "Thomas". Or could it be a brother?

A "Phenius Burchard" shows up in the 1860 Travis County, Texas property tax rolls, acting as an agent for Hannah E. Pierce, widow aged 58 and fairly well-off. He is not in the corresponding census for Travis County for that year, though the widow is and is shown to have been born in Vermont, so that may have been a connection. It was common for single women (typically widows) to have agents in "business matters".

WOW! You have opened a huge door for me! Thank you so much.

I found an obituary on this ancestry forum for Theresa Bach. It was an anonymous poster. I will cut and paste for you. It looks like her maiden name could have been Schneider:

Illustrated Buffalo Morning News, Sunday, 30 January 1921, page 5, column 2. DIED BACH-Suddenly in Lancaster, N.Y., on January 29, 1921, Teresa M. (nee Schneider), beloved wife of Julius Bach aged 63 years; mother of Mrs. Claud Huckaby, Victor H., Louis A.,Veronica C., George L., Laura J., Joseph A., Peter N., Fred J., and the late Clara M. Bach. Notice of funeral hereafter.

Thank you so much for helping me. Would you have any more info past Julius Bach or Seth Burchard?
Also, did Arthur T Buchard have any siblings?
Kelly Burchard-Canada

Hi Kelly,
I am helping a friend of mine work on her family tree. She is descended from Arthur T. Jr., Richard's brother.

I have been working on this family for a few years and I do have more generations back.

Richard and Arthur's parents were Veronica BACH (1884-1972) and Arthur Thomas BURCHARD (1883-1947). Veronica was from the Buffalo, NY area, and her parents were Julius BACH (1853-?) and Teresa SNYDER (1857-1921).

As for Arthur's side:
his parents were Seth BURCHARD (1854-1898) and Charlotte Mary DILLON (abt. 1862-1929). She had married again after Seth died to George W. RAY in about 1903. Charlotte (or Lottie)'s parents were Thomas DILLON born in Ireland and Jane WALKER (abt. 1828 Ireland).

Reply here or you can email me off-line if you like.
Jen Cranch

Re: President Rutherford Birchard Hayes
Elias was Roger's father by adoption, but not biologically. Therefore, Rutherford Birchard Hayes was not biologically a Birchard. The following is a quote from my book, "The Quiet Puritans":

"Several facts point to Elias not being Roger's natural father. It is clear that Rober Birchard was born before Sarah Jacob's marriage to Elias. There was more than a year's gap between Roger's birth and Sarah's marriage to Elias. The baptismal name of 'Roger alias Burnham' at age 18 indicated Elias Birchard was not Roger's natural father. In addition, Roger was listed as illigitimate in the Jacobs' family records. In an article written by Robert C. Anderson on 'The Maternal Ancestry of President Hayes' the author described a search through the Barbour Index of vital records in the Connecticut State Archives. These records revealed the marriage date of Elias and Sarah Jacobs. The records grouped all the births to any one couple. They showed that five children were born to Elias and Sarah between June 12, 1759 and March 13, 1768, but Roger was not among them. The Jacobs family records showed the birth of Sarah but farther down on the same page is the isolated entry, 'Roger, illigitimate son of Sarah Jacobs, born December 25, 1756". The records of the First Congregational Church of Mansfield were printed in the same volume along with the town's vital records. Under the date of 17 April 1775 were found the baptisms of seven children of Elias and Sarah Birchard--the five children whose names were recorded in the vital records and two more, which were the two younger children. The only other emtry for 17 April 1775 is 'Roger (son of) Sarah Jacobs, alias Burnham' The original church records are on file at the Connecticut State Archives."

Elias did adopt Roger. There are records to substantiate this. There is no 18th century entry for the surname Cornwall in the Mansfield vital, church or land records. The surnames of Birchard, Cornwall and Jacobs in the indices for the courts of New London, Windham, New Haven and Hartford couinties for the years 1756-1760 reveal no cases relating to Roger's paternity. Roger's second child was Sophia.

Elias Burchard ( born Dec. 22, 1730) was the Great Grandfather of President Hayes. Elias son, Roger Burchard, had a daughter named Sophia that married a Hayes and became the Mother of President Rutherford Birchard Hayes. So Nathan Birchard, Samuel D. Burchard, Hon. Horatio C. Burchard, and President R.B. Hayes can all trace their pedigree to Thomas Burchard.

Rev John Luther Burchard b. 1824 DE-MO-CA

Sacramento, Cal, Sept 10, 1881

I recollect too, that after my interview with Bishop Harris, Rev. J.L. Burchard came to me and pleasantly said: “I want you to remember that Logan Harris was not the only boy you helped start out to work in the old M.E. Church.

Of course I had not forgotten the sincere, honest, earnest face of the boy, when I took him by the hand and welcomed him into the M.E. Church. And this brings up other reflections. I remember the little girl who is now “Grandmother Burchard”, when I took her on my knee to keep her quiet, while my dear friend, her father, REV Jonas Heath, was preaching to a great congregation in Virginia, and urging , in eloquent and loving strains, that “godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”

I remember too, how pleasant it was to meet Brother Heath and family, years after this, over the Mississippi, in Missouri, and there renew the dear friendships of earlier years. And also of the sad sight after
this viewing of the fatal tree which fell on my dear friend and brother, Jonas Heath, and took him off instantly into the eternal world.

Excerpt from a book entitled Autobiography of Lorenzo Waugh
Note: Rev J.L. Burchard referred to is Louisa Heath’s husband, the Rev John Luther Burchard whom she married in Benton Co MO and later moved to California with in Spring 1860. Louisa was the eldest daughter of (Rev) Jonas B Heath, son of Israel Heath and Elizabeth Blue.

Re: Mary Burchard b. 1853 MO m. Charles Tromberly had Cora May Tromberly b 1884

Correction to posting. Found info late last night. Her husband was Charles TWOMBLY:
Mary BURCHARD b. 4 April 1853 MO d. after 1900 married Charles H. TWOMBLY b. NH d. before the June 7, 1900 census, CA. Most likely buried in the Twombly Crypt, Mountain View Cemetery, Alameda, CA.

In the History of Santa Clara County, CA by J.P Munro-Fraser,, 1881 (San Francisco: Alley, Bowen & Co. Publishers) I found this reference to Charles H. Twombly on pg 42: “ The Gilroy Hot Mineral Springs-About 12 miles from the depot of the Southern Pacific Railroad, at Gilroy, in a small rocky ravine, in the Coyote Canon near the headwaters of that creek, where the mountains, timber-	clad to their sunmmits rise several hundred feet on both sides of that stream, Francisco Cantus, a Mexican shepherd, while hunting for some of his stray flock in 1865, discovered what are now those famous springs. He lost no time in filing a squatter’s claim to the premises, and for some years used it as a camping ground for himself and friends. It is not probable that the Indians were aware of their existence, for no remains have been found, besides, the hills were infested with wild beasts, a fact which may account for their lack of knowledge on the subject. Cantus sold his interest a short time after to George Roop, who at once commenced the grading of a road to the springs, the erection of houses, and the general clearing and adornment of the locality. He then took into partnership Charles H. Twombly, Cashier of the First National Gold Bank in Oakland, Alameda County, who, in 1872 sold his shares to John A. Cottle, and the proprieters became Roop & Cottle...”
Charles "C.H." Twombly was a San Francisco capitalist who in May 1875 was one of the founders of Oakland's First National Gold Bank. He was an active member of the Oakland Lodge of Masons and the Oakland Commandery, Knights of Templar. Both Charles Twombly and his wife Mary are buried in a large beautiful crypt in Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland CA.

I found the following article in a History of Alameda County published by S.J. Clarke Pub. Co. in 1914 which mentions C.H. Twombly:
Chapter VII The Harbor, Webster Street Bridge, etc.
On the 24th of February, 1873, articles of incorporation of the Oakland Harbor Improvement Company were filed, its object being to dredge and open a ship channel across the bar at San Antonio creek and protect the same by suitable means; to improve and make navigable the waters of the creek and estuary; to connect by a canal the bay of San Leandro with the creek or estuary; to construct along their line and adjacent to them suitable wharves and warehouses for the accommodation of trade and commerce, and to construct across the mouth of San Leandro bay a suitable dam with flood-gates sufficient to turn the waters of the bay through San Antonio creek. The object also was to purchase and acquire all necessary property, franchises, rights and privileges for the carrying out of these objects. The principal place of business was declared to be at Oakland; the capital stock was $2,000,000, and the directors were G. W. Bowie, William Graham, F. Chappellet, G. M. Fisher, W. H. Gorill, Elijah Case, Z. Montgomery, E. W. Woodward, John Doherty, R. C. Gaskell and C. H. Twombly, all of Oakland. The first appropriation for the Oakland harbor was made by Congress in 1874. In that year the freight business amounted to 154,300 tons. By 1882 the freight amounted to 1,225,266 tons and the passengers carried to 858,352. In August, 1882, $263,389 was available for continuing the harbor improvement. At this time, with a harbor channel only two feet deep, Oakland's commerce was as follows: Traffic by ferry, 60,000 tons; traffic by vessels, 94,300 tons; total, 154,300 tons. In 1888, with a channel twelve feet deep, the traffic by steam ferries was 1,876,633 tons; traffic by vessels at railroad temporary wharf, 492,417 tons; traffic by vessels at city wharves, 221,370 tons; total, 2,590,422 tons. Recent dredging was a great disappointment, because it widened instead of deepened the channel to the city wharves. What Oakland wanted—had begged for from the start, was a channel of sufficient depth to permit large ocean-going steamers to reach its docks.

In the 1910 census for Oakland City, Alameda Co. CA., Mary A. Twombly, age 47 is widowed, and living with her is her now 16 yr old daughter Cora May who states that her father Charles H. Twombly was born in New Hampshire. Noemployment is listed for either of them.
Mary and Charles Twombly had a daughter:
Cora May TWOMBLY b. 12 Feb 1884 CA

Daniel Webster Burchard b. 1858 MO-moved to CA 1860 s/o Rev John Luther Burchard DE-MO-CA

Daniel Webster BURCHARD b. 5 March 1858 MO d.1912 CA m.31 Dec 1876 in Mendocino Co. CA 1. Mary Josephine BROADDUS b. 23 Apr 1856 Nevada City, Nevada Co. CA. d. 31 Dec 1878 and is bured in Little Lake Cem.Willits, CA. She was the daughter of James Lafayette Broaddus b 18 Nov 1824 Madison Co. KY and his wife Missouri Jane Broaddus b 1830 Madison Co. KY whom he married in 1855. Mary’s father J.L. Broaddus was also a Methodist Episcopal South minister who came to California in 1850. He converted to the church when 15 yrs old. J.L. Broaddus was licensed to preach in 1860 and supplied work ome time before joining the conference. He was placed on the supernumerary list in 1878 and died August 21, 1886. J.L. Broaddus is mentioned on pages 314, 335, 336 and 455 in Fifty Years of Methodism: A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church by C.V. Anthony, published 1901. It can be viewed through a Google Book Search and is completely online for viewing and search through its contents. It mentions that J.L. Broaddus was in charge of Potter Valley circuit prior to 1854., and in 1874, 1876 and 1877 the Round Valley circuit. His working in these areas means that he would have known Rev John Luther Burchard, Louisa (Heath) Burchard’s husband very well, which is no doubt how Daniel Webster Burchard met his first wife Mary Josephine. Daniel Webster Burchard is buried in the Twombly Family Crypt located in Mountain View, Alameda Co. Ca. This crypt belongs to his sister Mary (Burchard) Twombly and her husband Charles H. Twombly and is also where his mother and father (Louisa Heath Burchard and Rev John L. Burchard are buried.) In the 1880 census he is living as a widower age just 22, with his two young girls in Round Valley, Mendocino Co. CA listed as an attorney.

Daniel and 1st wife Mary (Broadduss) had 2 children:
Martha ‘Marcie’ Mildred. BURCHARD b. 17 Nov 1877 Mendocino Co. CA
Mary Josephine BURCHARD b. 29 Dec 1878 Mendocino Co CA (living withmaternal grandparents in 1880).

Daniel Burchard m. 2nd Cora McComas 6 March 1881 and had two children with her. Both were born in MO. Cora was a daughter of Rush and Ann E. McComas who first lived in MO before moving on to Santa Clara Co., California. (Rush was the son of Hiram McComas and Rebecca Hatfield from Cabell Co. VA, another son of Moses McComas and a brother to both Sanders W. McComas who married Laura Mary Heath and William Burke McComas who married Nancy Heath.). Cora’s father Rush McComas died April 1903 in Santa Clara CA. Daniel and Cora also moved to California. He was an attorney and they ived in Round Valley Twp, Mendocino Co. CA in 1880 and in San Jose, Santa Clara Co. in 1900. In 1900, two of Cora’s brothers, Allen McComas (b. 1872 CA) and Henry McComas (b. 1873 CA) were living in their household in San Jose. I found this biographical sketch of Daniel Webster Burchard:

Holding a prominent and important position among the public officers of this county, is Mr. Daniel W. Burchard, attorney at law and assistant district attorney. His father was the Rev. John L. Burchard, for ten years a member of the Missouri Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. While he was stationed in Benton County, Missouri, on March 5, 1858, the subject of this sketch was born, and came with his parents to California in the same year. His father was located first at Marysville, remaining there four years, and afterwards for six years in Stockton. In 1868 he was sent to Gilroy, where Daniel attended school. After a four years’ residence here, his father returned to Marysville, when he was appointed Indian agent at Round Valley. In 1872 the family removed to Oakland, in order to afford the children better educational advantages. After passing through the schools of Oakland, Daniel went up to the reservation, where he taught school and studied law. In 1879 and 1880 he studied law in the office of Henley & Johnson, of Santa Rosa, the senior member of that firm being Hon. Barclay Henley, late member of Congress from First District. Mr. Johnson is now attorney-general for the State.Mr. Burchard was admitted to the Bar nine days only after attaining his majority, and first “hung out his shingle” in Washington Territory. He remained there but a short time, when he returned to California, and for three years practiced law in Hollister, serving one year as city attorney. Removing to San Jose, he entered into partnership with Moore & Moore, and on the election of Howell Moore to the office of district attorney he was appointed deputy.Mr. Burchard is a hard worker, as can be gathered from the fact that he has appeared in fifteen hundred cases since he began practice, six hundred of them being criminal cases. It is noteworthy, also, that, although so young a man, he has been connected with many cases involving heavy interests. Among these may be noted the congressional election contest of Sullivan versus Felton; the senatorial contest of Ryland versus Conklin; a number of homicide criminal cases in which the final penalty was inflicted, and others.
On March 6, 1881, Mr. Burchard was married to Miss Cora, the eldest daughter of Hon. Rush McComas, the county treasurer. They have four children: Marcie, Mary, Ernest, and Ethel.
Mr. Burchard’s family is of Scotch and German extraction, and is fully represented in professional and intellectual pursuits. His father is a thoroughly self-made man, educating himself for the ministry by his own efforts, and passing his life in the service of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His mother is a native of Virginia, a descendant of the pioneers who first settled in that State. His only brother is Dr. L. S. Burchard, of Oakland, and his only sister is the wife of C. H. Twombly, the San Francisco capitalist.
Pen Pictures From The Garden of the World or Santa Clara County, California, Illustrated. - Edited by H. S.

Was David Burchard (b. 1795 NY) a brother of Samuel Burchard (b. 1807 NY) ? Did Samuel Burchard have a sister or cousin named Angeline "Ann" C. Burchard? Could George Burchard (b. 1828 NY) be a brother or cousin of Samuel Burchard?

Angeline "Ann" C. Burchard (b 1817 NY/MA) (d.1895 IL) married David Marcus Chapman (b. 1808 NY)(d. 1885 IL) in NY or Gallia county, Ohio sometime after the death of David's first wife in OH in 1852.This was probably Angeline's second marriage because she already had a daughter.

David Chapman was the son of Thomas and Ann Chapman of Sheridan, Chautauqua, NY. David married his first wife, Eliza Harris, in NY. They moved to Gallipolis, Gallia, Ohio where Eliza died in 1852.

In the 1860 census (Gallipolis, Gallia, OH) in the household of David and Angeline Chapman is a David Burchard (b. 1795 NY).

In the 1860 census, as a separate listing for Gallipolis, is a George Burchard (b.1828 NY) with wife Luicinda and children, William (b.abt. 1849), Evalino (b.abt. 1854) and George (b.abt. 1859).

Anson or a Burchard with the first initial "A" may have been a physicial and surgeon that settled in IL after the Civil War. I am interested in any Burchard families during this time.

Olive Julianna Holden/Willard Birchard

I would like to correspond with descendants of the above. I believe Olive Julianna Holden is the daughter of Aaron Holden and Orpha C. Whitmore. She was born in Ticonderoga, Essex, New York. The family lived only for a short time in New York and then moved back to Leicester, Vermont. I have divorce records on Julianna and Willard, also some addition records from the Oregon archives. Does anyone have a copy of the death cert. on Julianna? I know she died 31 Jul 1906 in Jefferson, Linn, Oregon and is buried in Lone Oak Cemetery, Slayton, Oregon. I'm hoping the death cert. will name her parents. The Holden line goes Olive Julianna/Aaron/Abraham/Thomas/James/Justinian/to Richard who came over from England in 1634 to Massachusetts. I wouldn't ask for a copy of the death cert. but have already spent my allowance on this family on the records from Oregon Archives.

Thank you for reading this and am hoping for a responds.

He had talked to Edna Laughter also who has just published two books on Birchards, but nothing in there about Willard or Everett. She married David Marcus Chapman (b. 1808 NY)(d. 1885 IL) in NY or Gallia county, Ohio after the death of David's first wife in OH in 1852.This was probably Angeline's second marriage because she already had a daughter.

David Chapman was the son of Thomas and Ann Chapman of Sheridan, Chautauqua, NY. They were earlier in Schoharie, NY.

Re: BURCHARD HUNG IN CIVIL WAR

I am a historian currently working on a history of the USCT. My main focus is the experiences of the soldiers and their families, and the officers that led them. I would be very interested in knowing more about both Mr. Burchard and the incident itself.

Sharon Heist
indhistorian@yahoo.com
520-378-2994
