Hi Jill,

According to some old notes of mine, John was baptised 2 Sep 1787 at WB. His parents were John and Sarah, who had many children baptised in WB, John being one of the eldest. Sarah may have been Sarah Ferris, from Wroughton (and married there 1782). A plausible baptism for John is 1763, son of William Burchell. My notes go no further back. A list of WB inhabitants dated 1793 lists, among the paupers, John Burchell, his wife and five children.

I believe your ggggm's name appears as NOTT in the marriage record.

Good luck!

Sorry but that's all I know about George Burchell's family.
The Royal Canadian Legion in Corner Brook is setting up a "Wall of Rememberance" with photographs of local soldiers lost in war. It would be great to have a photo of George to be included on that wall.

You may find this interesting

Transcript of Gordon Henry Candow
When I was leaving home, coming out Georgia Town Road, down here. Petrie's, where I live. This fellow came up from a house to wish me all the best. His name was George Burchell. And , O.K. I went on. And this night in Africa, George came in as a reinforcement. We had some casualties and he had been to England, a year or so before and did the training and everything and was ready to go on the guns, as a gunner, he was trained as a gunner. He came in at night of course and he was just waiting around for, to see the Sgt. Major in the morning. And when I came off duty here was George and I remembered him, shook hands with him and so on and he told me what he was going to do. And there was a Tiger tank up this slope, grassy slope about two hundred yards away that we had knocked out two or three days before. And he said to me, "Would it be alright to go up and have a look around?" He asked me if it was a Tiger and I said "Yes." and he said, "Would it be alright to go up and have a look around?" I said "Sure, I got no authority whatever you want to do I suppose". I said "You haven't been detailed?" "No," he said, "I haven't seen anybody". He said, "Well I'm going up". So George went up and about five minutes after I heard this big "rhump", looked up and here's this fellow (inaudible). So I remember myself, Tony Hall, he's dead now, ran up, and this was George. He picked up a potato masher, a German hand grenade, and pulled the string; plunk, plunk, plunk. In action ten minutes and killed.
I think the 1940 census will be available in April sometime next year.
Maybe you can find them then. With the girls once they are married or unless you can find them in a family obituary with their names your kind of out of luck.
But who knows, someone might know them or they might respond to your query.

Did you try familysearch.org?

Good luck in your search

I lost track of Ambrose, Eleanor, Ida and Dorothy after a few year. In 1930, there is no more mention of Ambrose and Ida. We are trying to reconnect with family back o the island.

We are currently looking for any relatives to Ambrose and Eleanor Burchell, their children were Percival and Ida. Percy then married Irene Williams and their daughters were Phyllis and Winifred. Phyllis had two cousins that came to the states to visit and their names were Dorothy Burchell and Sybil Law. Sybil had either a daughter or grand named Lovely. Most of the burchell family came to America between 1909-1923. We really want to know more of our history and get to know our family.
Burchell's from Canada to UK

In a 1901 census I have a Caroline Ann CORNWELL, b abt 1856 in Ash, Kent, with 3 BURCHELL children - Robert Edward, aged 15, born in London and then William, aged 12 born in Canada and George aged 11 also born in Canada. In the 1911 census I again find Caroline with her husband Louis CORNWELL, with only Robert. In 1901, the 3 children are listed as "sons" to Louis, whereas in 1911, Robert is now a "boarder". I cannot find the other 2 children in the 1911 census. I cannot find a marriage of Caroline and Louis. I can find a marriage of a caroline to a Robert BURCHELL in 1885. I cannot find what happened to Robert (if he is the one) or what happened to George and William. If anyone could shed any light on this, I would be VERY greatful !
Thanks

Hey Leigh,

I got curious. Joseph is the man youre looking for. He was born in 1820 and died in 97. charles and thomas were brothers...im pretty sure of that. anyway, past joseph, i really dont have any idea. i went to a family reunion in 1992. i was 10 years old but the t-shirts all started they were from county cork. its odd because later i was reading that "one" book which stated they were from either kerry or galway. so now im not sure.

Newfoundland and Cape Breton Connections

I am looking for any Keigan or Burchell families that are related to a Bridget Keigan Burchell of Sydney Mines/Ingonishe. I have a document covering a land grant of 1854 for settling lands in Cape Breton. This document states that William Keigan, Joseph Keigan, Michael Keigan, Matthew Keigan and Bridget Burchell, heirs of Owen Keigan, late of Ingonishe in the County of Victoria, farmer, were to inherit 200 acres of land in Cape Breton. On top of this document it shows that it copy was delivered to Matthew Keigan June 18, 1906 (no address is shown). Other dates on the document are the 14th of November 1860 and 4th of June 1861.

Bridget married Peter Burchell and their daughter Elizabeth married William Cook of Sydney Mines, my great grandfather. I need help in obtaining information connecting the Keigan, Burchell and Cook(e) families. The Cook family has a Newfoundland, Sydney Mines, Glace Bay/Reserve Mines and New Waterford connection.

I have a public tree on ancestry which will show you the information I have already gathered.

Appreciate any information in helping me put this puzzle together.

Edie Cook
Hello Keith

I am also looking for a Benjamin Burchell. I am trying to find a record of when Bejamin's mother Bridget Keigan and his father Peter Burchell were married and where. I have a listed of Keigan and Burchell descendants. The Keigan list shows that Bridget Keigan and Peter Burchell married and the names of their children. However, no date or place is shown nor is my gggrandmother Elizabeth Burchell listed. I cannot locate Bridget on the Burchell list. Their is a Peter Burchell, born 1806 but he is not married to Bridget and does not have a daughter Elizabeth. In the 1901 Canadian Census Bridget Burchell is living with Elizabeth Cook, my ggrandmother.

Below is an item I pulled up from the NS archives showing that Benjamin Burchell son of Peter Burchell and Bridgt Keigan was married 15 Feb 1872 in Sydney Mines to Sarah Ann MacKinnon.

www.novascotiagenealogy.com
Sarah Ann MacKinnon and Benjamin Burchell married 1872 in Cape Breton County
Item can be found in Registration Year: 1872 - Book: 1804 - Page: 57 - Number: 38

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
