Just found the Burdick name in my work on Hon. Henry Mower Rice, Minnesota Senator.
Henry Rice came to Kalamazoo area in Territory period according to Kalamazoo histories. He was son of deceased Edwin Rice (d. 1829) of Waitsfield, Vermont.
He worked on surveys in Michigan Terr and early statehood period and then my next sightings are in Iowa Territory.
The Burdicks appear to have taken him under their wing--although his mother still lived in Waitsfield. Two other brothers--Orrin Rice and Edmund II Rice--and perhaps brother Chas. Rice--ended up in Minn history also and may have passed through the Kalamazoo story.
Justus Burdick was brother to Cyren according to Everts & Abbott "History of Kalamazoo County, Michigan : with illustrations and biographical sketches of its prominent men and pioneers..." p. 253-54 and they were in Kalamazoo area in 1832.
If anyone has any info regarding how the young Henry Mower Rice (and his brothers?) was connected to the Justus Burdick family and how they interacted in early Kalamazoo I would very much like to know, even if it's years from now.
