Thanks for the information. I was ablr to find the birth and the day Clement was baptised.

Clemrnt Burdis was born 30th November 1821 (Gateshead) and baptised at St Mary's Church 16th Jan 1822.

I got the certificate back for William but looks like the wrong one although I still think the one that I have for Clement Burlison?? (whose father was Thomas) and an Ann Levi is the correct one it came back typed as oppose to hand written so could well be that the original was bad to read.

Good searching.
Hi Fran

I'm doing this from memory so hopefully it makes sense. William's dad Clement - have you found anything about him as I did find reference to a Clement Burlison marrying an Ann Levi (clement was a chain maker and and Levi's dad a bottle maker, now I could never find Williams but found his sister Mary under the name Burdis 1845 but 1843 there was a William Burlison. have sent for Williams birth certifcate hopefully back soon.

Hi Joan
I've just received a copy of my Grandma's birth certificate (Christianna Burdis b 1908). Her parents are William Burdis, Railway Stoker and Mary Ann Burdis, formerly Murphy. The address on the certificate is 67 Brunton Street, County of Tynemouth. I've also found the family on the 1901 census living at 8 Richmond Street, All Saints, Newcastle. I think we've got two different families with a lot of co-incidences!!
Regards, Chris

For the Paxtons I have Robert Paxton marrying Christiana McIntosh in 1840. Robert was born 1817/1818 at Alnwick (although one record confusingly says Spittal, near Berwick.) He died 1873 in Newcastle and the informant is William Burdis. HIs wife died 1888. They had the following children, John Mcintosh Paxton b 1841 Newc , Alice b 1851 Newc, Isabella Agnes b 1855 Newc d 1910, Christiana b 1848 Alnwick d 1890 Gateshead. (Some of these are on IGI). Christiana McIntosh Paxton is on 1881 census living with her son John and his family. Robert's father was a Samuel Paxton and I have never found him. Christiana McIntosh's parents were John McIntosh b Scotland d 1860 and Elizabeth Wandless b 1790 Newc d 1860 who were married at St Andrews Newc, in 1811. They had at least one other son a John McIntosh.

I do have some other details about Burdis/Paxton, when I get a minute later I'll e mail them to your hotmail address. Hope that's ok
Fran

Hello Frances
I was very pleased to read both your recent messages, particularly the one that seems to confirm that my GGF is William b 1878. I thought you might be interested in the contents of a letter I've recently discovered among my Grandmother's papers. The letter seems to confirm that William's sister Christiana also emigrated to the USA. I've done a bit of research and found that she married John Robins - they appear on the 1891 census living with Clement and his family and again in 1901, this time in their their own home. The 1901 census includes a son William Robins, age 6, and I believe he is the author of the letter I have found. It is typewritten, dated 30 April 1926 and addressed to my GGF William Burdis, East Howdon-on-Tyne, England. The letter is on print headed paper from William H Robins, Pastor, First Baptist Church, Pendleton, Oregon - and has been written in response to news of the serious illness of his grandfather (presumably GGGF William). He writes that he has informed his mother (Christiana) and has written to Uncle Joe - he also asks for Aunt Lizzie's address so that he can write to her. He reminds my GGF of the last breakfast they had together on the day his family left from Liverpool (William must have waved them off from the docks), he describes how he came to join the church at 17, his life in the intervening years and gives a fascinating description of his life in the USA - a great piece of social history which includes cowboys, indians and motor cars!!!
I'd be grateful for any info you might have about the Paxtons.
Regards, Chris
My father, John George Burdis b 1910, was the youngest son of William Burdis b 1878, who lived at 37 Brunton Street, Percy Main at the time of his birth.
I understood his mother's maiden name was Mary Ann Murphy, who came from Cork, but is also recorded as Mary Ann Morton. I'm not sure if they were the same person.
As far as I know, other siblings were William, Robert, James, Bella, Christine, Flo, who may have died in infancy, Elizabeth, Emily, Bess and two unknown to me.
I also would appreciate further information.
Joan

William Burdis & Christianna Paxton

I've recently started to research my Burdis roots and wonder if anyone can confirm that my GGF William Burdis, born Gateshead 1878, was the son of William Burdis and Christianna Paxton. I can find no trace of the family in the 1881 census.
My GGF WIlliam married Mary Ann Murphy in 1897 - their daughter Christianna, born Tynemouth 1908, (the middle child of 13) was my Grandmother. The family lived in Percy Main and GGF William worked on the Railways. I remember my Grandmother visiting 'Uncle Clem and Auntie Meggie' who lived in Gateshead so the family name Clement also seems to tie in.
I am very keen to trace the name Christianna back through the generations as it's also my name. Was Christianna Paxton's mother Christianna McIntosh before she married Robert Paxton in 1840? I'd be grateful for any help!!

Hi Joan
I've just today received a copy of our Great Grandparents marriage cerificate - William Burdis and Mary Ann Murphy married on 17 August 1897 at the Register Office in Newcastle upon Tyne - they were both 20 years old and lived at 29 City Road, Newcastle. William gave his occupation as Locomotive Engine Cleaner which must have been a filthy job! William's father was also William Burdis and Mary Ann's father was James Murphy.
William died before I was born but I have very fond memories of Mary Ann who I called 'Great Grandma Dickie Bird' - a lovely, kind old lady - she died in 1962. I have a photo of them both that I think was taken at my parent's wedding in 1954.
Their daughter Christianna was my grandmother - I'm doing a bit of research to find out how far her name goes back in the family as it's my name too. I've found a William Burdis married to Christiana (nee Paxton) who I think may be our GGGrandparents - I'll keep you informed.
I remember some of my Grandma's brothers and sisters - Bob, Joe, Emily and Grace in particular - are any of them familiar to you?
Chris

Hello
yes I come from Robert Paxton and Christiana McIntosh as well. I am descended from the younger daughter Isabella Agnes who also named her daughter Christiana (my great grandmother). I have an aunt called Christine named after her. We've lost the "iana" bit!
I have looked up William and Christiana Burdis and I have just replied to another message on this board with what I know. Like you I haven't found them on the 1881 census, but I have got them on 1871, 1891 and 1901.
Please reply, would like to swap more information
Fran

Re: BURDIS, William

Hello
I am linked to Christiana Paxton b 1848 Alnwick who married William Burdis in 1864. I am descended from Christiana's sister Isabella. Christiana and Isabella's mother was also called Christiana. My great grandmother was a Christiana as well.
I have William and Christiana's children as Grace b 1864 (presumably died young), Robert b 1865, Clement b 1867 (named after William's father), James b 1870, Christiana b 1872, Mary Ann b 1876, William b 1878, Elizabeth b 1880, Joseph b 1886 (went to US), Edna b 1888 d 1895. There are other messages on this board that indicate that actually there were more children and that William remarried. Christiana Paxton died in 1890 aged 42. I have found William on 1901 census with Robert's family. All the lines I have found seem to have a lot of children and they like to name a daughter Christiana.
Would like to hear from anyone who can add to and/or amend this information.
Fran
