Franklin is south of Indianapolis, on highway 31. In the 1950's and 60's it was a major route between Indianapolis and Louisville, KY. On Friday evenings and nights all the traffic was headed south and on Sunday afternoons and evenings everyone was headed north back to Indy. I guess all the folks from Kentucky found better jobs in Indianapolis.
Please e-mail me directly and I can return a file for you to consider. If it weren't for all the nice and informative people one meets on the message boards we would never be able to create and grow the family trees we have. Like you I find this to be a great hobby.
Hey cuz,

I'm finding this genealogy thing a blast...you meet the nicest, funniest people. In searching the Wilde line of the family (my mother - Robert's daughter - married a Wilde), I've found a third cousin from England. He's really funny (funny haha, not funny peculiar). And now I've met you.

Anyway...I look forward to our correspondence and exchanging information. By the way, where is Franklin? I was born in Indianapolis but my folks moved to California when I was 5 and now I live in Wisconsin.

Cecily

Oh! my word, I must have flunked spelling in the second grade! Ha Ha Oh well, just chalk it up to old age. What I meant was we are distant cousins and yes my last name is Smock. There were a lot of Smocks in Indiana, from what I have found most were descendents of the Smocks who left Conewago, PA and moved to Kentucky and then on to Indiana.
The funny thing is, my line left New Jersey, went to Fayette Co., PA and Westmoreland Co., PA. My g grandfather moved back to Fayette Co. and my grandfather moved to Kansas about 1884 or 1885. In 1957 I went to school (college) back in Franklin, Indiana. At that time I knew nothing about the Smock history of the area. So, I would guess the Sue Smock you knew probably came from the Kentucky and Indiana lines.
I will try to do a better job of spelling from now on.

Cousin Gene

Gene,

This is excellent information. Robert is my biological grandfather but has always been sort of a mystery since he and my grandmother divorced when my mother was just a year old. I know little about him or his ancestors. From census data, I believe he never remarried and lived with his mother (nee May Hicks, b 1861 in West Virginia), perhaps until her death. His WWII draft card indicates that he worked for the Terra Haute Brewery.

I have a recollection that someone sent my mother his obit, perhaps in the 1960s.

So I guess this means we're cousins of some sort.

Cecily

I don't think I am down to Robert Clyde yet. William L. his father I will check to see if I have him listed. Basically, I start with James Burgan and Elizabeth Smock in Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA and Somerset Twp., Washington Co., PA. Elizabeth was a sister of my gg grandfather Henry Smock.
James and Elizabeth had two sons, James Jr. and Daniel who moved to Vigo Co., IN from Washington Co., PA in 1839 and 1854. I will be happy to exchange what information I have that has been found. MY email address is gsmock at oldwiz, net,
at = @ Thanks for your reply. Gene

My grandmother (Clara Ethel Denehie) married a Robert Clyde Burgan (b. 1885 in Cedar Rapids IA) in Vigo County, IN in 1908 (divorced in 1910). His father, William L. was born 1849, I believe in Vigo County, IN. William's father and mother were born in PA (according to census records).

Since many of my ancestors are from Vigo County, I wonder if you and I are part of the same tree. Have you found a Robert or William in your tree?

Cecily

Thank you so much! I started my Burgans with James b.1782 and he was in Westmoreland Co., then moved to Washington Co. about the time of the War of 1812 as close as I can tell. His sons James and Daniel moved to Vigo Co., Indiana and I am looking for any descendents of theirs. Your Frank or Benjamin Franklin Burgan quite possibly may have had parents from Kentucky. Shelby County is southeast of Indianapolis in the center part of the state. Vigo is on the western edge. If I find anything on Kentucky Burgan families I'll let you know...

It was interesting for me to find two Smock gentlemen who went by the name Frank, One was Charles Francis and the other was Charles Franklin...

At the present I don't know if the Frank Burgan I have as born abt. 1858 could also be yours. I would not be surprised if your Francis "Frank" Burgan could be the Frank I found in the census as being the son of James Burgan b. 1813

This is all I have on the children of James, who was a (Jr.) and his wife Elizabeth Cochran.
Cassandra (Cassie) b abt 1842 in Washington Co.,PA
she married Thoms Mc Donough
Catherine "Kate" b. abt 1847
Scott b. abt. 1850
Ella b. Abt. 1853
Frank b. abt. 1858

This is all I have on James Burgan b.1813 & his family to date.
His father James was born in 1782 supposedly in Westmoreland Co., PA. Any additions or corrections are very much appreciated.
Frank was also my great-great-grandfather. We find him called Frank on almost every record. Usually with a middle inital B.
He is only called Francis on the record of his first marriage - to Mary E. Worden on Dec. 3, 1874 in Shelby County, Indiana.
His second marriage uses the initials F. B.
On his Death Certificate, he is named as Benj. Franklin Burgan.
So I'm leaning towards the theory that his name was actually Benjamin Franklin Burgan, and that he either chose to use Frank because he preferred it, or that he was a junior and used the middle name to avoid confusion and being known as "Benny" or some other diminuative.

We had considered the Vigo Co. Frank, but our Frank has a birthdate of September 22, 1850 on his death certificate, and the Vigo Co. Frank had a brother, Winfield Scott Burgan, born Feb. 22, 1850. If you search for Burgan on the Vigo County board here you will find the messages that I exchanged with Bob Duerigen on this family back in 2002. He has Frank with a middle initial of L.

It seems that the Burgans in Vigo, Hendricks, and Kosciusko County go back to Pennsylvania.
In at least one place, our Frank listed his parents as being from Kentucky...

I have Elizabeth Burgan b abt 1780 as the sister of James, William, Joseph, Elijah and Isaiah Burgan. Two sisters, Hannah md Reuben Case and Sarah md John Lippincott. An 1821 deposition by Amos and Joel Cooper in Fayette Co., PA stated James, William, Joseph, Elijah, Hannah Case, Elizabeth Wilson and Sarah Lippencutt were the heirs at law of Isaiah Burgan who died in the war of 1812.

Was John Cooper related to Amos and Joel???
Was Elizabeth md to John Cooper first and the unknown Wilson second ???? So far I have not been able to verify a father of the above Burgans. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

We know at this point James Burgan remained in Washington Co., PA while his brothers William, Joseph and Elijah moved to Wayne Co., Ohio. Sarah married I believe John Lippincott and moved to Belmont Co., Ohio, Elizabeth married a Wilson and I have nothing on their family. Hannah married a Case.
Would anyone know the first name of Hannah's husband?
I have found two Case names associated with Westmoreland and Washington Co.s in PA. Butler Case moved from Morris Co., NJ with his family, his son Meshach married Magdalene Eckstein and daugher Rachael married John Shepler, son of Mathias Shepler of Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.

Seek info on above. I checked World Connect and about 6 submitters show her name but no other information. All seem to have her born prior to 1790. Appears everyone copied the info from same source. Can anyone tell me original source for the Burgan info?

Sarah,

Thank you for sharing this information with us!

It helps to give a fuller picture of where our ancestors lived.

It seems that he knew he was dying and went to spend time with his older daughter, who had returned to Illinois after her marriage to John Row.

Story is that he was the wagonmaster that led them on their move to Texas. The rest of the Burgan family moved into Oklahoma, and they went to Hillsboro, where the Row/Rowe family lived.

According to his Death Certificate, Frank was born September 22, 1850 in Indiana. We have found several different possibilities by using his age on the Census records.

On the 1880 Edgar Co., Ill Census, his age is given as 28. He had married Mary Worden on Dec. 3, 1874 in Shelby Co., Ind.

By 1900, they are in Indian Territory, after spending about 5 years in Texas. Mary dies shortly after this and by 1910, he is back in Ill. and remarried.

He died December 11, 1916 in Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois, where his daughter had cared for him in his final months.

I would love to hear where your Frank was from. I have collected a lot of information on the name. Who knows, just what you're hunting for might be in my file cabinet??

The Burgan family I have been researching are the descendents of James burgan and Elizabeth Smock, Elizabeth was a sister of my gg grandfather Henry. Todate it is known they were married in Westmoreland Co., PA, moved to Washington Co. Their oldest son Daniel migrated to near Terre Haute in Vigo Co., IN . I am not sure, but I believe at some point in the census James b. 1813 also appears in Vigo Co. in the census.

Contact me directly and I will be happy to give you all I have on the Burgan's. It would be great if we coud put these people together. Btw, OK is our neighbor to the south.

Do you have a fathers name for Sarah? or a place such as a county in PA where she was born? I have three Burgans who were listed in Westmoreland Co. PA. Daniel in the 1790 census, James and Joseph in Westmoreland Co.,in 1810. James I know moved to Washington Co. and I have the names of his children. Joseph may have been the Joseph found later in Wayne and Holmes Co., OH. A William Burgan was also listed in Wayne Co., Ohio. It is a guess but since William and Joseph were in the same Twp in the 1840 census I suspect William may have been the father of Joseph. That is not set in stone though.

I did see where William Burgan in Wayne Co. was supposedly born in 1777 in PA according to the 1850 census. Also in question is Joseph Burgan in Wayne Co. My question has been is he the same Joseph listed in the 1810 census in Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA and was he a brother of James Burgan listed on the same page.

As yet I do not know Sarah's father's name, or her county of birth. From her age at death, I believe her birth was 3/8/1803, somewhere in PA, if census records are correct.
She married Hugh McCoy whose family was living in Wooster, Wayne Co., OH btw 1820 and 1830, but no marriage record has been found for them yet in Wayne or Holmes Co. They were already married and living in Holmes Co. by 1830. From the ages of their three children in the 1830 census, I am guessing their marriage took place ca 1824.
At the present time, I am considering the possibility that William Burgan may have been Sarah's father, but as yet I have no proof. Any knowledge you might know and share of William's children would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

They owned the Welge Furniture store on Main Street in Hillsboro. Fred opened the Welge Chapel in 1928 but unfortunately he died in October of that year and his son Louis, my father, carried on the family business until it was sold in 1943 when all the sons enlisted in the service during World War two.
Hi Kitty, Juanita here. I did hear back from a Marilyn. She wanted dates for Simon b.1861 d.1958; Mary[Lauderback] b.1865 d.1920; Andrew b.1891 d.1968; Mae[Bradburn]b.1899 d.1981.
Andrew had at least 2 brothers Edgar and Simon. Simon sr. was born and died in Washington County. He and Mary are buried next to Andrew and Mae in Monongahela Cemetery. I have found some of the Burgans in the History of Washington County, that's how I came across Daniel. He was customer in a bartering house that was about 10min from where I live. I hope to visit Vanceville Cemetery, about 20min. away, soon maybe I'll get lucky.

Isaiah Burgan's heirs

Isaiah Burgan died during the War of 1812. In Fayette County Pennsylvania, in 1821, his brother James applied for land for Isaiah's heirs. His brothers and sisters, James Burgan, William Burgan, Joseph Burgan, Elijah Burgan, Sarah Lippencutt, Elizabeth Wilson, and Hanah Case were named. Isaiah probably lived in Westmoreland County before the war, and many of his siblings had moved to Ohio not long after the war. I am interested in hearing from anyone related to this family. Thanks. cherivandenberg@yahoo.com

Re: Keturah Burgan dau of Daniel Patrick Burgan

We now know that Daniel P. Burgan's daughter Keturah married John McClain in Westmoreland County, and they lived in Fayette County Pennsylvania. John moved to Butler County Iowa with his son Elery sometime after the Civil War. There is more information available for any interested descendants of Keturah and John.

I don't know who the father of your Elizabeth Burgan is, but I wouldn't rule out Daniel P. Burgan. I am a descendant of Elizabeth Burgan and William Rice. I haven't seen any evidence that proves that she is the daughter of Daniel. She was born about 1807. In the 1810 census Daniel doesn't have a daughter under the age of 10. In the 1820 census his widow Mary doesn't have a daughter Elizabeth's age either. Also, Daniel's will was written in a way that makes it appear that Elizabeth may have been his first born, or at the very least married or on her own when the will was written in 1818. Elizabeth Burgan didn't marry William Rice until 1828. I'm still searching for proof of the parents of my Elizabeth Burgan. cherivandenberg@yahoo.com
