Re: Wetzstein Surname As Place Name

As an occupational name the surname means knife-grinder. As a place name one source it's said to be a habitational name for is Emmendingen. Field name Wetzstein near Essingen. If that helps. This is not necessaily an exhaustive explanation by any means. Just informational. And my family or I can be reached at silverdov@lycos.com or you can search through the roots and wings surnames at the various genealogy sites found at http://www.angelfire.com/journal2/skylarks/page2.html

Recently I have seen the ships msnifest for Ship Hemisphere on June 7, 1856. Here are names Johann Wettstein, Susanne Wettstein, Wolfs, Burkhardt, all together, so may be descendants traveling together through LeHavre, France. The German spelling of the name is Wetzstein. When they fled to or resided in Switzerland the spelling is Wettstein, like it's found in the Russikon history on the surname. Other names I've seen intermarried with this family are Bossart/Zimmerman/Mayer.

There's more info on Abraham & Elizabeth Wetzstein and family all the time, as you view the rootsweb.com and familysearch.org and other family history sites. Also type in the internet search of the names you are interested in, and you will discover both Jewish and Protestants. Jews emigrated at times under Huguenot and other Pietist or reformation groups but continued to practice Judaism in the homes in times of severe persecution. See our notes under the Davis/David surname France to Wales to America. Saw a genealogy post requesting my email address. I am still researching the Wetzstein/Wettstein/Whetstone surname. Happy to hear from others with helpful information on this family line.

Thanks

I'd like to trace them back to Germany and perhaps uncover their parents and siblings. Any help would be truly appreciated.

Mary's maiden name was Mattes, too. This is quite a common family name in Renquishausen. I have the data of her parents and siblings as well.

If you are interested in exchanging more information on the Mattes and Burger family, please get in touch with me.

Diane, my grandfather was Arthur's brother, Clyde Harvey Burger. My grandpa was the black sheep of the family. I am so excited to read your post. I have pictures of the homestead. You have helped me remember their parents names. My mom was Ladene Marie Burger and was raised in Huron, South Dakota. I am just beginning but I have some memories that I'm going to follow up with.

My email is katep@wydebeam.com or bkpoole@cox.net if you think we are related.
