John Burgun and Anna Schang - Bitche, Alsace-Lorraine

John Burgun and Anna Schang - Bitche, Alsace-Lorraine

Can you advise how I might be able to track down birth or marriage records for the family members described below, or perhaps, the names of the parents of John Burgun and Anna Schang?

John Burgun (born abt 1847, I think in January, in Bitche)
Anna Schang (born abt 1847, Bitche)

John and Anna married in 1873.

John and Anna immigrated with their children to the United States and settled in Smithton, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh) in 1889. The father and sons were coal miners, and I suspect may have been miners in Bitche as well, as I have some indication that Bitche is rich in mineral resources.

John and Anna's children's names are (all born in Bitche to my knowledge):
Peter J. Burgun (born abt 1876)
Catharine Burgun (born abt 1878)
Anna Burgun (June 13 1879) - this is my husband's great-great grandmother
George Burgun (born abt 1881)
Maria Burgun (born abt 1882)
John Burgun (born abt 1884)
Daniel Burgun (born abt 1886)
Ottilia Burgun (born abt 1888)

Amy

Re: John Jacob Burgoon & Elizabeth, France Information

My info is close to what yours is but: Jacob b Alsace,
Bas-Rin France, now Germany,8-1762 lived in Anne Arundle MD;9-30-1771 Denization Record: Jacob Burgoon,a native of Germany; 4-1780 of AA Co, bought land in Frederick Co MD; 1790 census, living in Frederick Co; Will filed Fred Co Md 1806,probated 5-1812. He died at his home in 1811 in Fred Co, now Carroll Co MD.
This is all the raw data that I have found and all is documented by someone else, not me. But I have found it to be very factual.
As for religion, most Burgoons were & are Catholic.
All but a few of Jacob's children moved thru Cambria Co Pa & down into Ohio where mine ended up.
My line is: John Jacob; Robert;Jacob;William;Francis Marion; Adeline Ann, my grandmother.
At one point, William moved down into the Denton area of Texas, remarried and had 8 more kids. Still a lot of Burgoons in that area of Texas.
Hope this helps.
Diann

John Jacob Burgoon & Elizabeth, France Information

Ok.. here is some information I've collected about John Jacob Burgoon and his wife Elizabeth. I would like for everyone to view it and tell me if my information seems to be correct or not. Some of it has come from other sites and others came from actual records.

John Jacob Burgoon/Burgoyne/Burgun/Burgan (these are different spellings I've gathered over the years)b. 1715 in Alsace, Loraine, France (now Germany) d. June 18, 1806 or 1811 ?, in Taneytown, Fredrick Co. (now Carroll Co.) Maryland. m. Elizabeth (Callaway or Goode)in 1745 or 1747 in Baltimore, Maryland. For his wife Elizabeth I found those two last names for her on someone else's family tree online so I don't know if either last name would be correct or not.

John Jacob emigrated to America in 1740? I have him listed as being on the ship Lydia in 1742 where the ship came into Baltimore, Maryland. He is listed on panel number 59 at Ellis Island. He was a cordwainer in France. A cordwainer being someone that makes shoes and other articles from find soft leather. He served in the French Army and married an English lady (this being Elizabeth) on board the ship while coming to America. He settled on a 160 acre farm after reaching America near Taneytown, Maryland.

His wife Elizabeth (Callaway or Goode)? was born between 1715-1730 ( I have 1715, 1720 & 1730 all listed as birth dates through different searches)born in England. Died between 1766 and 1800 in Maryland. She was listed as being a Protestant.

This is all information I've gathered from many different places. If anyone can fill in the gaps for dates or corrections please let me know!

I'm related to him through my Grandmother Pauline Fern (Garrett) Mullins. This is my tree from John Jacob.

John Jacob Burgoon/Robert Burgoon/Peter Burgoon/Harvey Burgoon/Philip S.
Jan,
I don't know if your reply will reach the person you want, as it came to me, and I'm the originator of this thread, not a descendant of George Kintz. You might want to reply instead to the person who has the same line as you, by replying to their actual reply to my original query. (I hope I'm making that understandable.) I don't think that those who reply get the notices, just the originator gets the notices, so unless they happen to check back, they might miss your info.

Sandy, I just moved to Blair Co., so hope to do more research in Cambria, but I doubt that will answer my questions, since so many researchers before me don't seem to have learned anything much about Prudence herself.

As for her father, what proof have you found? I have seen the info re membership application for the descendants who later applied to the SAR, using her father "Henry Baker" for their Rev. War ancestor. Then I checked with DAR for any Henry Bakers they have documented, and there were several, only one of whom was in the correct area (or so I figured). They looked him up for me, but he was too young to be her father...more likely a brother, if related. Knowing who her father was could help me find her mother, so even though I'm interested primarily in her maternal line for one specific reason, I'm always interested in ALL my direct ancestors, including her father and his parentage. If you have anything on her father that would help identify him further, please let me know...it might lead me to what I'm looking for.

Hi,
I realize this is a little late, but if you're talking about Aunt Emma, daughter of John Harvey. She was my great-great Aunt. She was the youngest child. Don't ask me to do this in order Effie, Mary, Zelma, Harvey, John Murray, Howard, Dick (Uncle Fats). There are more but just can't remember all the names. My Great Grandmother was Mary Bailey. My Grandmother was Margaret Lippy, My mother is Shirley George. Aunt Emma was the last of her generation, they all lived long lives. Mary died in 1987 at the age of 98 just a few months short of her 99th birthday. The only member of my grandmother's generation still living is Dorothy Dutterer and I know she keeps in contact with Aunt Emma children.
I haven't gotten up to Cambria since I moved to Blair Co. last year. However, someone sent me over 100 pages of Burgoon descendants several years ago. Unfortunately, it didn't cover my own branch very thoroughly, probably as it was a female's family. So far I only have Susan, James and John as John and Susan's children entered into my genealogy program, but probably have a lot more that would have been in that huge file. If you want it, I can email it to you. I believe it's a pdf file.

Last year when you replied to my query, you said that you had proof of Prudence Ann Baker's father, but when I asked about it, you didn't respond. I am really interested in tracking her family, not just her mother, although she would be of great importance to me. I've been busy with other family lines in the meantime, but someone recently emailed me about Burgoons, so I'm back on them again. Hope to hear from you.
Janet

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure about the accuracy of the info in that quote, because the information I've been given by NUMEROUS Burgoon researchers is that the ancestor who came from Alsace was named Jacob. My connection was through his eldest son Jacob, who lived in Cambria and Westmoreland counties in PA. Jacob Jr. is buried in Pa., and I have a photo of his tombstone. However, I've still not learned for sure where Jacob Sr. was buried...whether St. John's or St. Mary's cemetery in MD. Opinion seems divided on that score. Jacob Sr. also reportedly had a son named Cornelius listed by other researchers. Also, family story is that Jacob Sr. met his wife on board the ship coming to the colonies. She was supposedly English, but I've not found a surname for her.

Thanks for all your information. I've heard from someone that Jacob Sr's tombstone is no longer around, but if it is, and you find it someday, let me know, please. I had seen information before that had possibly found him in Alsace, with the spelling of Bourgoun, or something similar, but I don't know if that was ever proven to be the same man. I also didn't have the information about his denization. I wonder why he served in the French Army, as I believe Alsace was part of Germany at that time, until Napoleon took it. However, I could be wrong. I've done a lot of research in Alsatian Catholic and civil records, and they have much info, even back that far. Of course, without the name of the town where he was born, it would be a tedious search for his birth or baptismal record. Anyway, thanks for all the info you provided - it rounds out what I had already learned.

I was going to ask you the same (email address), as I already have more than I'll ever need on the other branches of the family. I stick with direct ancestors, their siblings and their spouses, and don't enter the children and other descendants of the siblings unless I find other later connections. Of course, that happens often enough in those Cambria families. I might have the info, just don't enter it. But thanks anyway for the offer. My descent is from Jacob Jr. and Prudence Ann Baker, Sarah Burgoon m Thomas Byrne, Catherine Byrne m George Little, Emily Little m Thomas Shaffer, Mary Catherine Shaffer m Harry J Buoymaster, Margaret Buoymaster m John Raymond McDermitt, Helen McDermitt m Arthur L Hart, me. As you might notice, that's a direct female line back to Prudence Ann Baker, so I'm really interested in continuing that maternal line to her mother, if I can ever find out who she was.

Hi Bob,

Just wanted to touch base, so to speak, as we appear to be cousins. My lineage is as follows:

1. Jacob Burgoon m. Elizabeth ?
2. Jacob Burgoon m. Martha Ann Lilly
3. Anastasia Burgoon m. George B. Kintz (Kent)
4. Frederick Michael Kent m. MarieLouise Delvina Busha
5. Saloma Liguori Kent m. George Morris O'Connor
6. Saloma Kent O'Connor m. Ernest Mortimer Kent (different line)
7. Living Kent m. Living Van Allen
8. Me:>)

I have just stumbled upon this thread and was quite happy to see the reference to General Burgoyne, as my Gramma Sally had always maintained that we decended from the esteemed gentleman...I also now think I know where my obsession with beautiful glass has come from! Gramma Sally had it too,...did it come from Anastasia I wonder?

Anastasia and George Kintz brought their family to Detroit, Mi. and that is where this branch has grown and flourished ever since.

Anastasia Burgoon Kent and her daughter-in-law Delvina Busha Kent were extremely smart and sauvy business woman, dressmakers, tailors and landlords...Delvina had one of the first telephones in Detroit, her number was 7. I have in my possession a stunning large portrait of MarieLouise Delvina Busha in her wedding gown. (she made it) It was "ashes of roses" moire taffeta silk. My mother made my wedding gown. The dressmaking continues as I teach my granddaughter to sew, she is 6.

Many in this line are buried in Mount Elliot Cemetery in Detroit. If I ever hire a bodyguard I will go there again and do research. Haven't been there since my grandmother's funeral, Saloma Kent bn. 1898 d. 1994

Jacob and Elizabeth would be so proud of all of us, I think!

Hi Janet,

I found reference to Jacob Sr' place of burial in a user submitted tree on Ancestry.Com (Mary A. Old, maold@sunkatchers.com: it is current) She lists as St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland. I searched the Maryland Genweb and found a cemetery transcript done in 1889, (well after Jacob Sr' expected death date) and only a Mary A Burgoon is buried there according to this transcript. There are several Burgoon's buried at St Mary's also, but no Jacob...curious.

In regards to Jacob Jr, I have a theory about the remarriage to Martha Ann Lilly. This marriage occurred in 1806 the same year that Jacob Sr. died. This was (and still is in my line) a Catholic family. Perhaps Jacob Sr. would not have approved of a remarriage therefore Jr. waited....I have personally witnessed this in my line due to religious reasons. Oldfashioned, yes but worth a look.:>)

Janet,

St. Mary's seems to be the popular choice of the long time researchers for Jacob Sr's burial site. As the only access I have to St. Mary's is the online transcript and Jacob is not listed as buried there, I suppose you could write for a look up.
There are several Burgoon's buried there according to the transcript.

My grandmother was widowed while her mother was still alive. I asked her if she would remarry, she told me no as my great grandmother would never approve, and also referenced the catholic church, I don't remember verbatim, as I was quite young, but I remember the "flavor" of her words and it would be unseemly for her to remarry, in the eyes of the church, so she never did.

Jacob Jr's son by Prudence Ann Baker married the sister of Jacob Jr's second wife, perhaps his second marriage was arranged because of this. Just speculation on my part.

Hi Janet,

Bob Hudson posted the St. Mary's location and as he is quite
reliable on the Burgoon line, and quite professional I might add, I have to believe he might have some proof.

I have learned that sibs and their spouses very often can be the key to the brickwalls in my research. I noticed the Lilly name and delved.

I do believe that the taboo of the widowed women in my ancestry may have been some victorian thoughts and feelings, exacerbated by the parish priest...someday I may research that aspect.

MarieLouise Delvina Busha Kent, my 2great grandmother, widow of Frederick Michael Kent, the son of Anastasia Burgoon and George Kintz, was in her early 30's and quite beautiful with only one child, she never remarried either. Frederick died in 1883, at 35 years old, of a bowel complaint that I suspect was a burst appendix, as this has been a problem for many of us since. I can't believe she didn't have suitors.

If you run a search of the Burgoon board for Bob Hudson, you will find the same posting that I referred to in the first paragraph and maybe he can be contacted. He always seems to be quite helpful.

Rose M. Meehan, died 1957, Orange County, California

The California Death Records Index database, has the following entry:

“Rose M. Meehan, born May 1, 1880, in PA. Her mother’s maiden name was Burgoon, and her father’s surname was Daly. She died in Orange County California on May 2, 1957.”

I am trying to determine if this is the same Rose Meehan who was married to Andrew J. Meehan, who died in San Diego County on April 22, 1957. He was born on October 8, 1876, in, what is now Jermyn, PA. I believe that he is a son of Charles Meehan and Bridget Burdish. In 1905, this Andrew Meehan was living in Force, Elk County, PA, and in 1910 he and his wife Rose were living in or near Horton City, Elk County, PA.

Any help on connecting this Rose and Andrew Meehan, and any help connecting him or them to my Meehans from Jermyn, PA, will be appreciated.

Robby
I would like a photo also of Jacob Sr's tombstone. According to my research, it is in St. John's cemetery.

[Excerpt from A Commemorative Biographical Record of the Counties of Sandusky and Ottawa Ohio, 1896]

Burgoon. The ancestry, from whom are descended the Burgoon families of Sandusky and other counties of Ohio, was John Burgoon, who served in the French army, and about the year 1740 emigrated from Alsace, France (now in Germany), to America. Here he married and had a family of seven children: Charles, Robert, Peter, Jacob, Francis, John, and Honore, the only daughter. Of these, Peter became a Methodist minister; Honore married Ulrich Sate, and removed to Pennsylvania, but the six sons all came to Ohio in the early day, and their descendents are found in Perry, Muskingum and Morgan counties. The father of this family died at his home in Frederick (now Carroll) county, Md., and his remains rest in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery at Westminster, he being of that faith. The mother was of the Protestant faith.
[end of excerpt]

Yes, Bennett is Benedict. The marriage records look like Weaver, a book has it as Werner, and his daughters death certificate as Grinen, I have it in my tree as Werner, but would like to clarify it.
