While I am mainly working on my direct family lines, I have not come across any of those names in my research.

Have you come across George Washington Reynolds b. circa 1832 in New Orleans USA, or Mary Livingston b. circa 1844 in either New York USA or County Armagh Ireland? They married in Bowen Qld on 24 December 1864.

I cannot find any record of their arrival in Australia nor any record of what happened to them after their marriage other than they had a son James Malcolm. James was born on 11 March 1866 in Rockhampton Qld and died in Sydney NSW in 1920.

Peter

Burgoynes in Ireland and Scotland

Hiya all.

Am looking for information on the Burgoyne family in Midlothian who appear on the 1841 Census. The name on this particular census is spelt 'Burgoine' and there continues to be variation throughout the recordings of them in Scotland.

The head of the household is a Michael Burgoyne born about 1805 in Ireland and his wife is Jane who was born around 1806 in Ireland also. I would like to receive any information possible about this family's roots in Ireland and also the history of the surname in Ireland. What is also interesting to note is the amount of Burgoyne's in Scotland who are all Irish born or born in to Irish families. Are they all related to one another? Any information would be fantastic!

Many thanks in advance!

I too am researching Burgoynes in Scotland who are of Irish origins. The ones of interest to me are the ones living in the area known as The Cowgate in Edinburgh in the 1841 Scottish Census. Head of this household is a Michael Burgoyne from Ireland so if he is the man you have information on I'd be extremely interest to read what you have!

Hello Colleen,

Good that you now have more time for research again, but I am really sorry to learn of the death of your mother. One more link with the past gone . . .

When I first came upon this thread I was very interested to read that your branch of the family has an old family bible, plus medical qualification certs. for Dr. J T Burgoyne.

You write "Am interested in the questionable stuff one of you has from around 1877. Who is that about?"

I do hope that you have been successful in following the links posted in my last message (plus the one to the Irish "entry point" that I posted back on 10 May 2009) -- the forum hosting all the data should permit free access, so let me know if you are having any trouble with them. The site should only ask you to register (also free) if you want to post info there yourself, or use certain facilities such as Search -- but a "site search" via Google does that job just as well as their in-house version.

The 1877 material is all about Cleo, her marriage, her divorce, her illegitimate child, etc, etc. Replies 10 and 12 in the RootsChat Northumberland thread [direct link: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,371267.0.html ] briefly mention the newspaper reports about what was said at the 1877 magistrates' affiliation hearings; and my recent Reply 34 in the Devon thread (link above in my last post here) incorporates a direct link to an image of the court report in Lloyd's Weekly, now up on Barry Ennever's site.

If you wish to gain free access to the other two reports (Reynolds's and Police News) -- which are broadly similar -- you should be able to get in via a local library's subscription to the Gale database of 19th Century British Newspapers. If such access is difficult where you are, send me a private message via Ancestry.com and then maybe we can arrange something direct.

This weekend someone has posted an extract from the will of Cleo's first father-in-law, written as her marriage was crashing and burning. Pretty hostile stuff, as you might expect . . .

Rol

I have been reading the updates on this thread and am very interested. I was part of the correspondence a year or so ago but then life events overtook me and I have not been corresponding since. Unfortunately my mum who was the granddaughter of Dr John Thomas Burgoyne died last year and so I have to rely on what she told and left me and what I can find out from records etc.

I have some documentation concerning Dr John Thomas. My grandmaother was Grace, his youngest daughter.

Am interestaed in the questionable stuff one of you has from around 1877. Who is that about?

I would like to pursue more investigation so if you have more info can you reply on this website?

Thanks Colleen Antaw

Anyone still keeping in touch with this thread may like to know that there has been considerable progress in researching the life of Dr John Thomas's sister (the euphoniously named Cleopatra Cecilia Burgoyne) since I posted this about her here on 10 May 2009:

"The racier of the two sisters has so far eluded detection after the events of 1877. She may perhaps have thought it best to retreat abroad. ... You won't have much trouble confusing her name with anybody else's -- but that could perhaps have persuaded her to change it."

Well, now we know. First she retreated to the Channel Islands -- where she brought yet another "imperial" name into the family, by re-marrying one Augustus Joseph Enever (declaring herself a widow!). And the clergyman who performed the ceremony was ... Lillie Langtry's father, the Dean of Jersey.

There followed a spell living in suburban respectability at Croydon -- with the forenames of Cleo's illegitimate son reversed in the 1881 census, and his status recorded as "visitor". Then the newlyweds headed for Scotland; and in 1885 they took ship for America. Eventually they came to rest in Cleveland, Ohio -- where it seems Cleo was later blinded as a result of "a streetcar accident". Both she and Enever died there in 1911.

Her son Samuel James Bennett had by now become James Samuel Enever; and it turns out that he too was blind, and has to earn his crust as a piano-tuner.

There is more: one of Cleo's sons by her first husband really did make his way in the world -- and founded a line of baronets.

For all the details of the (ongoing) saga, see the Devon thread on the RootsChat forum: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,378529.0.html

Drawing on the RootsChat data, Barry Ennever, the historian of the Ennever/Enever clan, has now also written an excellent illustrated overview of Cleo's life, for which see his family website: http://www.ennever.com/histories/history15093.php

Rol

Hi, I too have been trying to confirm Ellen Helens Parents. There seems to be no doubt that she married john Leete, but i have found varying answers as to who her Parents may be. many say her Parents have not been found, but on a few websites i have found her Parents as being Christopher Burgoyne (1474) and Thomazine freeville.(1474) Longstanton Cambridgeshire. Their offspring being:-
Ellen 1500
Elizabeth 1523
Thomasine 1537
George 1515
Thomasine 1503
Elizabeth 1508
Mary 1525
George 1517
Alice 1521.
I have no written proof of any of this! It does seem to be a big gap between first and last child!
There is a book about the genealogy of the leetes which mentions Helen as a "Gentlewoman", but doesn't give her parents!
I will keep searching!

I’m so glad that you found my posting and replied. Aside from the Burgoyne connection, I really wanted to connect with someone from the John D Moore line. Since John D was the longest living of the children from Garland and Polly Cochran Moore, hopefully you might have some information and pictures. I am descended from Ben Moore, one of John’s brothers. I have a lot of information on my line from Ben and his wife Martha Osborne to present. I also have quite a bit on all of the children of Garland. Unfortunately, I don’t have any information on Garland’s parents. I have a little info on Polly Cochran’s line, but I can’t guarantee it. As to the Burgoyne line, all I have is John D’s wife Florence Augusta Burgoyne, born April 1844 in Virginia, died in Eureka 20-Aug-1930. She and John are buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery in Eureka. John David Moore was born Dec. 1832 in Todd County KY and died in Eureka 30-Jun-1920. Their children were: Gabriella b 1868, John E b 1871, and Florence b 1875. Florence Augusta’s parents were George A Burgoyne born 1818 in Virginia and Eleanor S born 1827 Pennsylvania. They had three children: Florence, Rosalina b 1852 VA, and George W b 1860 in Eureka IL.

I am happy to share any Moore information with you. Hopefully, you will do the same with Moore and Burgoyne lines.

Thank you.

Jim Moore (CT)
Many thanks for your swift return post. Unusually, I am able to respond in kind as I am up all night watching my son who has a bit of a violent stomach bug. It will also give me the chance to key in my new Burgoyne learnings, courtesy of your very illuminating threads on rootschat (for which I'm most grateful)!

The reason the Australian Burgoyne researchers believe John Burgoyne (variously 'builder', 'civil engineer' and 'gentleman' - if not quite Gentleman Johnny Burgoyne) to have been a Sapper is that Dr John Thomas Burgoyne's death certificate lists his father's occupation as ‘Royal Engineers Imperial Army'. I think the Sappers were based in Newbridge.

Dr John Thomas Burgoyne ended his life as an alcoholic. His cause of death was listed as 'Intemperance and Convulsions'. We have all but lost count of the number of towns on the east coast of Australia he practised in and lived with his ever-growing family during his 25 years in Australia. I wonder whether the cause of death and the peripatetic existence are in any way related? I must say though, I've not encountered the Queen of Egypt or her son from her second relationship in my searches but I'll have another look under her various pseudonyms (Burgoyne, Power, Bennett).

I'll contact you directly as you suggest.

All the very best, and many thanks for making contact,

Grant

Hi Grant,

Delighted to hear from you -- I was beginning to worry that this thread was no longer sending out alerts to anyone!

Thank you very much for the update on your progress with the Burgoynes in Devon. Since my 28 April post here I have managed to gain some (all-too-short) access to your tree on Ancestry via a public library, so I did realise that you had pushed back a good way. since the posts here last year -- and well done!

The Plymouth origin definitely confirms that we have both been working on the same family. I was intrigued to know how you came upon the Kildare connection. Have you had access to Dr John Thomas Burgoyne's baptismal PR entry -- and is that the source for his father John being a sapper? Have you managed to find military records about him?

I think that the best way I can get you up to speed about the sibling saga is to launch you on the road to a whole set of posts on the free UK RootsChat messaging site. As you will see, there were two sisters. I think you will find it quite fun to begin with a post some weeks ago on their Co. Kildare board, and then just follow the links until you eventually arrive in Devon. Other contributors to this Ancestry board may like to try the same. Here is the link: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,373315.0.html

I hope Ancestry will not want to try and blackball me for luring away the clientèle!

Would you also be so kind as to send me a "contact-initiation" e-mail via the Ancestry private messaging system? There are some delightfully scandalous press cuttings from 1877 that I think you would enjoy seeing, and I understand that such byte-rich attachments are not allowed on the public boards. (You will get a hint of what is involved as you progress through the RootsChat posts.)

The racier of the two sisters has so far eluded detection after the events of 1877. She may perhaps have thought it best to retreat abroad. Can't spot any sign of her in your part of the world after a superficial search, but it must be conceivable that she did follow her brother south. You won't have much trouble confusing her name with anybody else's -- but that could perhaps have persuaded her to change it. See what you think . . .

With best regards,

Rol

Re: Burgoynes in Queensland (1870s and 1890s), NSW (1880s - ) and Victoria (1900s - )

Hello Rol12,

I haven't been very active with my family tree for some months as I have been busy adding to my own! So, in between feeds, playing, reading and nappy changes I'll offer this very quick response to your recent posts.

I believe we have found Dr John Thomas Burgoyne's parents. I believe they are John Burgoyne, builder, of Raleigh Street, Plymouth, Devon, and Susan Smith Giles of 37 Bedford Street Plymouth. They married on 15 January 1840 at Ebenezer Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Plymouth. Fathers are William Burgoyne, builder and Thomas Giles, whitesmith.

The doctor's grandfather William Burgoyne was married to a Dorothy Maddick. His father, also William (1783-1854), married a Martha Randall. And his father, yet another William (1745-1829), married Mary Bellamy. The next generation back is John Burgoyne (b 1720) who it is believed married a Mary Ffriend. All of this takes place in Devon, between Blackawton, Kingsbridge and Plymouth, and if correct takes us back into the 1680s.

What we don't have is any information about John Burgoyne and Susan Smith Giles, including the doctor's siblings and how they came to be in Ireland. We know John and Susan have vanished from the 1851 Census. We know John was a builder. There's a good chance he was in Newbridge, County Kildare between at least 1849 and 1851 if he became a Sapper - which his profession would have well recommended him for.

Sorry for the rushed post! I'm curious to learn more about your research into Dr John's siblings!

All the best

Grant
AMENDED RE-POST OF 28 APRIL 2009 MESSAGE:

Has any further progress been made by any contributor to this thread on the ancestry of Dr John Thomas Burgoyne? I cannot gain proper access to Grant_4's Ancestry.com public tree, but via the search function I can see that the doctor is believed to have been born somewhere in Co. Kildare in 1849. Is that still the current "state of the art"?

I would be grateful to hear if Grant or anyone else has any "new news" on the origins of this branch of the Burgoyne family.

Rol12

ADDED TEXT:

I believe that I have details of Dr John Thomas Burgoyne's siblings and their descendants. (I am contactable via the Ancestry.com messaging system, but as a non-subscriber I am not permitted to initiate contact, only to respond.)

Tobias Burgoyne did indeed marry Anne Cyr, in 1863. She was the daughter of Rebecca Burgoyne and Jean Cyr. Rebecca was the daughter of Joseph Burgoyne, the brother of Tobias' father Francis (or Francois). So Tobias Burgoyne married his first cousin, once removed! In any case I am descended from Tobias and Anne and would be delighted to hear from anyone who is also from this family. I am also interested in the Cyr family and the Howard/Hayward family.
