Bartley Burk-John T Burk-William Burk, Indiana

Hello, I am having some problems finding a line. My wife’s father’s name is Jerry Lee Burk but I haven’t been able to find anything pointing me into a solid direction once I get to Bartley Burk (1818).

I have found Bartley Burk and John T Burk listed next to each other -1860 United States Federal Census, Wabash, Jay, Indiana, post office New Corydon, roll M653_269, page 199, image 201.

I have also found Bartley Burk and William Burk listed next to each other-1850 United States Federal Census, Sandy, Tuscarawas, Ohio, roll M432_735, page 264, image 89.

In the 1870 Census it lists Elizabeth next to John T Burk.
I have found one member on Ancestry with Bartley Burk and John T Burk as brothers, which is how I have them now although they could be cousins but their ages are too close to be father-son.

Any help would be appreciated. I would be happy to email a word doc with the line if you want. Thank you!!

Evidence for Susannah's last name being Helms (or Hellums) comes from her father's will. Jennie Pierce, another descendent, has reported that according to her family, the name was Holmes. A few years ago, Sybil Wilson copied William Hellums' will which names his daughter "Susannah Burks." It is interesting to note that he signed the will with his mark, so the spelling of his name was what the person who wrote out the will decided that it would be. I can imagine that saying Helms with a southern accent could be written as Hellums. Here's the will:
Last Will & Testament of William Hellums, Dec'd (as copied by Sybil Wilson)

In the name of God, I William Hellums of the County of McMinn and state of Tennessee being aged and infirm and my present affliction admonishes me that I must e'er long change time for eternity and being low in health but of sound mind and disposing memory and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly goods and things as it has pleased God to bless me with I will and bequeath as follows (viz)

First I will and bequeath (after paying all my just debts and funeral expenses) to my beloved wife Rachel Hellums during her natural [life] all my property both real and personal for her use and benefit to support her until her death.

Secondly after the death of my wife Rachel I will and bequeath to my son James Hellums all my lands and farming utensils.

Thirdly after the death of my wife Rachel as afresaid I will and bequeath all the residue of my property (except so much as in herein after provided) to my afflicted daughter Peggy C. Hellums and that my brother John Hellums be the guardian of my daughter Peggy C. Hellums.

Fourthly, I will and bequeath to my other ten children as follows (viz) To Elizabeth Fowler one dollar To Dorcas Blakely one dollar To Sally McAllister one dollar To Lydia Maxwell one dollar To Polly Hellums one dollar To Nancy L. Hellums one dollar To Rachel C. Poe one dollar To Rebecca Hellums one dollar To Susanny Burks one dollar and to Anne Poe one dollar, to be paid to them out of my property after the death of my wife Rachel Hellums, and further I leave my beloved wife Rachel Hellums Executrix and my dear brother John Hellums Executor, of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills.

And fifthly and lastly I will and bequeath my Body to the Tomb and Soul to God who gave it. Amen

In testimony whereof I the said William Hellums have hereunto set my hand and seal this Sixth day of June in the Year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and Forty.

In presence of us: Robert W. McClary, John Rogers, Elisha Snider

The will is signed by William Hellum's mark (x) and his "seal".

Inventory of sale of the personal property of William Helems/Helms, copied by Sybil Wilson at the McMinn County Courthouse in March 2001:

Williams Helems Dec'd Inventory of Sale

Inventory of the sale of the personal property of William Helms Dec'd Sold on the 6th day of February 1841 (to wit)

John Rogers 1 gray horse $52.50 James Helms 1 sorrel Mare $30.00 Thomas M. Smith 5 chairs and wash tub $2.05 Jesse Wallin 1 Loom $4.25 James Helms 1 Saddle $6.00 James Helms Sundry Tools $3.37 1/2

[Total] 93.17 1/2

Sworn to in open court May 1st, 1843 G. Vaughn, Clerk

Rachel Helms Executrix of William Helms Dec'd.

Note from Sybil: Following the inventory of sale there is a list of vouchers where Rachel Hellums/Helms had given receipts to various people. The last names on the list of receipts were Helms, Poe, Maxwell, Hanks, & McCarty. The name is spelled Helems in the heading of the inventory, but in the body of the record, it is spelled Helms, and if anyone looked at this particular handwritten record (the inventory) the "e" could most definitely be mistaken for an "o" -- not so much in the heading but in the rest of it.

Hello again.

I was at the library yesterday. We have exactly two source books for this county (I live in CA = not a lot @ our library for McMinn TN). This is what I found:

NOTE: Helms (Hellums), William --- WB C p270-271, Will exec. 6 Jun 1840, returned to Court 5 Oct 1840; " I William Hellums ... aged and infirm"; to wife Rachel; to son James; to afflicted dau. Peggy C Hellums; ten other children: Elizabeth Fowler, Dorcas Blakely, Salley McCallister, Lydia Maxwell, Polly Hellums, Nancy L Hellums, Rachel C Poe, Rebeccah Hellums, Susannah Burks, and Anne Poe. Execs: wife Rachel and bro. John Hellums. Wit: John Rogers, Elisha Snider, Robt. W McClary. Signed by mark. --- WB D 133 and 148, 1 May 1843. Invt. of sale by Rachel Helms, Execx.
p.76 Wills and Estate Records of McMinn County, Tennessee 1820-1870, Researched, Compiled, and Edited by Reba Bayless Boyer, 1966. Source located Sacto FHC.

So this would seem to be Susannah the wife of Jonas. I suspect that the original will/probate files would contain more information. I also suspect that there might be a Settlement. If so, then the heirs would be named, and perhaps Jonas Longley (as Susannah's husband). Either way, this compiled abstract gives a direction to go.

Debra

I agree that it is a puzzlement, and I don't have an answer for it. Effie is clearly listed as head of household in the 1840 census. There is a gravestone in the cemetery. The dates on his gravestone as reported in a book about the Hamilton County cemeteries are Aug 11, 1766 - Feb 5, 1848. These dates were recorded in 1937 by Charles W. Lusk. The dates were confirmed by Sybil Wilson (married to a descendent) on a visit to the cemetery in the mid 1990's. She took a picture of the gravestone, but in switching from one computer to another, it has disappeared from my files. It may be that they had separated and/or that he was living with one of his children. If you figure this out, I would be happy to know the answer.
I am a descendent of Jonas M. Burk, the younger brother of James.
Sharon

I am researching the descendants of John Burk and Euphemia 'Effie' Bodine. I am a descendant by their son James Monroe Burk / Burke h/o Nancy Longley.

I would like to know why folks list this elder John Burk / Burke dying 1848 in Hamilton CO TN as his wife Effey (nee Bodine) is listed as head of household in the 1840 Hamilton CO census, and, she is buying and selling land (several transactions) (John not mentioned in these deeds) in Hamilton CO TN 1840-1850. There are at least 2 deeds between Effey and 2 of her sons.
This would indicate that either 1) John died by 1840 2)they divorced/separated.

I know folks say that he is buried in the Johnson Cem. located in Hamilton CO, but many gravestones are (just) wrong. Have proven this time & time again. Also wondering if there is a gravestone.

All leads appreciated.

Thank you,
Debra

County Mayo Burks

Is anyone researching the Burks of County Mayo, Ireland? I have some information about Mary Burk Sheridan who left Ireland at the beginning of the famine with her husband, Michael Sheridan, their son, John, and several of Mary's siblings. I cannot go back farther than 1845 because I don't know what town they were from and both names are very common in the area. If you have information on the Burks please share. Thanks.

Unfortunately, my Lewis was in Madison Co, Indiana in the 1880 census as a single lawyer living with his half-brother. Sorry, we don't connect, but good luck with your brick wall. Mine is Lewis' father, Ulick, b. abt 18180 in Pennsylvania. I haven't been able to find anything on him.

I am interested in your Lewis Burk. My g-g-grandfather was William Henry Burk, b. 1845 and his brother was Lewis Cass Burk, b. 1848. They were both born in Union County, Indiana, which is directly next to Ohio in the area that used to be Ohio. Do you think there is a connection? Lewis had a daughter Hazel.
