Hello, I am looking for Burkart family who lived in Canada in the 1800's and early 1900's. William, Andrew, Anslem and Sefrin and brothers who came over from Germany in the middle 1800's and some settled in Ontario and some in Michigan. I am trying to connect my Burkart family to any of these people.

Thanks, JoAnn

Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for all the info on Daniel S. That is pretty much what I have as well. I did recently find a divorce record for him and Mary Elizabeth Beeson, so I can now say its verified that he was married to both her and "Nannie" Beeson.

I still have not verified that George Burkhart was the son of William and Cynthia from Meade Co. Or the brother to James P for that matter.

I am interested in what information you have on Ester Jane as well if you are willing to share. I show her as being married to Dewitt Clinton? Burkhart who was son to James and Rachel Burkhart? And dieing in 1883. I also can't find anything about Dewitt after that time. You are her gg-granddaughter??

Daniel S. was my g-grandfather. I'm more than willing to share anything I come up with.

Thanks again,

Lynda Chapman (Burkhart)

Hello Tina. I am Jean Burkart in Cold Spring, KY and am researching the Burkarts.

The earliest Burkart I have is August Burkart (1838 - 1907)who married Barbara Stephany (1838 - 1836. They had seven children: Charles, John, Rose, Mathilda, Louis, Catherine, Joseph.

I don't know where August or Barbara lived but they are buried in Wilder, KY (about 5 miles south of Cincinnati).

If you think there is a relationship I would be happy to send you what I have.

I have two August Burkarts in my database. August Sr. (1835 -1907) arrived in US in 1852 at age 16 and settled in Newport, KY (just across the river from Cincinnati, OH). His father was Ignas and mother was Theresia. He had a sister Dergal (b. 1838). I suspect that August Sr. may have had other siblings. August Jr. remained a bachelor.

August Sr. married M. Barbara Stephany.

Do any of the above dates or names mesh with your Burkarts?

I have a John B. Burkart -- b. 1863 d. 12/7/1937 in Campbell County. He was married to a Mary A. Fairbank and was the son of August Burkart and Barbara Stephany. It doesn't look like there is any connection here.

I was hoping I could link a brother to August but have since found emigration records indicating he came over from Germany with a sister (Dergal) and parents (Ignaz Burkart and Mary Elizabeth Wolfzorn) in 1852. Info regarding Dergal is minimal. She was listed on the ship's passenger list. Period. It is like she dropped off the face of the earth!

Thanks for replying and happy hunting.

It is so unusual to see the Burkart name without an H. I was wondering where in Indiana your Burkart's were located. I have a John Burkart who was in Cininnati in 1850 to have the one child we know of, but have no other info about him. We have heard rumors that there were several more children, but have yet to find them. Do you know if your Burkart's were in Ohio at some time? Thanks, Tina

Burkart's Ohio\Iowa?

OK...... now I looked at my records, and I have a John Burkart who had a son in 1850 in Cincinnati. I know nothing else of him. His son Joseph Ludwig Burkart was Catholic and was a wagon maker in Hamilton, Butler Co., Ohio (just north of Cincinnati). In 1913 he and a brother named August lived in Hamilton, Butler Co., Ohio and their name was recorded "Burkhart". As of June 27, 1913 August had moved on to Iowa (Same state as yours !!), but I have no idea where. There were stories of at least two other brothers (Tom? and Charles?) who went 'west'. West of Ohio leaves a large area to cover. One other thing I did not mention before is that I have heard that John's wife's name was Pauline, but I have no proof, just a name. Does any of this sound familiar? (If so maybe John was in Cincinnati for a short while- or it could be a different family) Thanks, Tina

burkarts in indiana

My mom, Helen Burkart, was born in South Bend, Indiana. Her father, my grandpa Anselm (Anslem), was born in Ingersoll, Canada, in the late 1800s. His father, another Anselm, was born in Germany in approx. 1826, we think in Baden-Baden. But, back to the Indiana Burkarts, my grandpa married Helen Janowski, the fruit of the union being my uncle, ANOTHER Anselm, my mom Helen, my uncle John and Aunt Mary Lou. All were born in South Bend, Indiana. I don't know if these were the Burkarts you were looking for, but you're right, the spelling is unusual, so I thought just maybe this might help.

I am a descent of William Burkart who married Sarah Caldwell, dont have any dates right now! My grandfather was Raymond Burkart, I am trying to locate one of his children. We arent really sure that this child exists, but have been told that raymond was married before he married my grandmother, Louise Kremer, and that he had a child. I have no names, only hoping that someone may see this and know what I am talking about. This child would have been born before 1940, and probley lived in Minnesota, somewhere around the Austin, MN area. I am really desperate, if anyone has any info, please email me at tmriecke@wolf.co.net, Thank you!

I do have an August Burkart or 2 in the family, but I am not sure if we are related. The farthest back that I have are John and Pauline Burkart had a son named Joseph in 1850 in Cincinnati (although I have not been able to find them in the census records yet). I am not sure when or how they got in the US, and if they brought any family with them or if they arrived at a different time. Do you have a John married to a Pauline about 1850? Thanks, Tina

Frank Burkart, son of Philip Burkart and Agnes Kofler, was born Feb21, 1892. Frank married Gladys Goodman in 1917, she died in 1923. They had several children: Robert, Dorothy, and Wesley. Frank later re-married to Hazel Anderson and they had two children, Clyde and Patricia. Frank died November 16, 1961.
Franks parents, Philip and Agnes, married Aug30, 1880 in St. Mary's Church in Menasa, WI. They lived in Neenah and later moved to Sherry, WI. Philip worked in a mill. The Connor Co. moved the family to a new home in Stratfrod. Philip was a millwright and head saw filer at the mill. He died from a blood clot that he got when he was trying to get some pipes apart in an old dry kiln. This happened in May of 1922 and he gradually became paralyzed. He died in September at the age of 66.
Philip was born July 30, 1856 in Boerstadt, Germany. He was 9 hears old when he came to America. His parents were Joseph Burkart II and Barbara Haag. Jospeh II was born April 28, 1824 in Boerstadt, Germany and Barbara May 24, 1823 in Boerstadt, Germany as well. The family left Boerstadt for Kaiseralautern on May 19, 1866 to come to America. They arrived in Neenah, WI about August 1, 1866. They lived on a farm on the Winchester Rd. west of the Oak Hill Cemetery.
Agnes Kofler (Philip's wife) was born July 25, 1857 in Milwaukee, WI and died January 28, 1933 in Stratford, WI. Her parents were Alois Kofler, born in Switzerland, and Barbara Harmier, born in Greenfield, WI. Alois was a cooper and a farmer. They lived on a farm outside of Milwaukee. They later moved to Neenah and lived on a farm about a mile west of th Oak Hill Cemetery.
Hope I haven't completely lost you. Let me know if you need more info and any info that you can share with me would be greatly appreciated. So can you figure out how we are realted? Ha!
Thanks! Debbie
