Hi Melinda:

The problem is that Burke is a very common Irish name. In addition the first names are often very common as well. Talk to family members and see if you can find a town or village that they may be from. Even with a village name (like Oranmore) its still difficult telling one William or Patrick Burke from each other.

His wife is a clever writer, the
author of "The Value of Life," to which Dr. Barry con tributed a preface,
and "Child Study and Education," prefaced by Rev. Dr. Hogan.

----------

John Butler Burke, M. A., of Cambridge and Dublin, is a well known Physicist
and Biologist.
DEATH OF COLONEL BURKE.- 1909

THE TUAM HERALD, SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 1909
TUAM, CO. GALWAY

DEATH OF COLONEL BURKE.

We deeply regret to record the death in London on Sunday of Lieutenant
Colonel Sir Theolbald Burke, Bart., of Glynsk and Knocknagur in this county. The
deceased baronet was born in Waterslade House, Tuam, as were all his brothers -
the most noted of whom was Thomas Henry Burke, the lamented murdered Under
Secretary for Ireland, Sir Theobald, who was in his 76th year, saw distinguished
service in the Army and was in the 18th Regiment in the Crimea and in the
Indian Mutiny. He succeeded his brother, Sir Lionel, in 1884, as 13th baronet,
and with his death disappears from the peerage the fine old honoured and
historic title of the Burkes of Glynsk. He was owner of several estates in this
county, particularly those of Knocknagur and Knockdoe, in the neighbourhood of
Tuam, and the best relations always existed between his family and their tenants/

----------

Sir Theobald Hubert Burke (13th Bart.) of Glinsk, (late Col. 18th Royal Irish
Regiment), died in London on 4th inst. aged 76. The deceased gentleman had
seen distinguished service. Having entered the Army (88th Connaught Rangers)
at an early age, he went through the Crimean war and the Indian Mutiny, and
afterwards exchanged into the 18th Royal Irish Regiment. He succeeded in the
Baronetcy his cousin, Sir John-Lionel, in 1884.

Sir Theobald was the last male representative of his family, and also the
last of a band of seven brothers, all remarkable for their good looks as well as
for their mental abilities.

The Burkes entered Connaught as conquerors 700 years ago, and it is 600 years
since Sir Theobald's ancestor settled at Glinsk (in the N.E. of this county),
separating form the branckh of the family afterwards ennobled with the title
of Clanricarde. The McDavid Burkes, (as the Glinsk family were called), have
always claimed to be the elder branch of the name, and bore a different crest
from that of the others (viz., live ostrich feathers rising out of a ducal
coronet), the badge of Baldwin of Flanders, King of Jerusalem, from whom the
Burkes claim to descend. (See "Journal of the Galway Archaelogical and Historical
Society," Vol III Page 57 and Vol. IV. Page 113). The Baronetcy was created
in 1628 in favour of Sir Ulick Burke, who was the builder of the magnificient
castle, or rather castellated mansion, of the name, fortunately still standing
and in perfect preservation, except that it is roofless. This building is
therefore of the first half 17th century and of great architectural importance
as marking the transition from the high strong castle of earlier days to the
modern mansion; and, it is to be hoped that, whereas the lands on which it
stands are about to be sold to the Estates Commissioners, the latter will have it
vested in one of the public bodies empowered to take custody of such notable
monuments. Poor Sir Ulick did not long enjoy his castle. Being foreman of the
famous Grand-jury of Co. Galway empannelled by order of Wentworth (afterwards
Lord Strafford) to vote the right of the English Crown to a head rent off the
lands of Ireland, and which nobly refused to agree to such usurpation; he,
with D'Arcy, the High Sheriff, was heavily fined and imprisoned in Dublin Castle.
It must have been very shortly after his return to Co Galway that the
Cromwellians carried war into this country, and at its conclusion, Sir Ulick,
together with other royalists, was exiled. Returning home finally he soon was at
enmity with some of his neighbours, the O'Conors, who besieged and burnt the
Castle. The family, however, resided close beside it until they had to sell the
property after the great Irish Famine.

About ¼ mile from the Castle of Glinsk stands the ruined church of
Ballinakill, containing a splendid recumbent effigy of a knight in armour, said to be
that of the first de Burgh to come to Ireland, or else the first of the name to
settle at Glinsk (for a representation, see "Journal of the Galway
Archaeological and Historical Society," Vol. II, Page 136). A cast of above has been
placed in the National Museum, Dublin.

Mr. William Burke, father of the late Sir Theobald, resided for some years in
Tuam, Waterslade House, where his son, the late Under Secretary for Ireland,
was born. He also at one time occupied Barbersfort, in the neighbourhood of
this town.

Sir Theobald died a firm believer in and a staunch supporter of the old
religion, to which his family had remained true all through the penal times. He
died unmarried, and leaves one sister now residing on the continent.
Hi. I'm researching my Irish ancestors and unfortunately these are very common names. I'm looking for any info that is available- my great-great grandmother was Catherine Burke who was born in Ireland (I've been told Tipperary but her social security application says Derry county, Longford, ireland- at least that's how I can make it out). She was born in 1877.
Her parents were Catherine Connaughton and Patrick Burke. That's all the information I have. I know that she came to live in New York, USA sometime before 1900 because that is when my great grandmother was born. She was married to Edward Halverson. Any info would be appreciated... I'm not sure where to look for irish records. Thanks!

Mary R. Burke, b. 1850 in Louisiana

Looking for any information about the family of Mary R. Burke, born 1850 in Louisiana, parents both born in Ireland, according to census records.

She married Thomas O'Malley May 11 1874 in Donadsonville, Ascension Parish, Louisiana. In 1900, the family had relocated to Baton Rouge. After that I have not found her.

They had three sons,
Thomas Archibald O'Malley
Charles Francis O'Malley
Patrick Burke O'Malley

I have found a few clues in the census records:
atrick Burke and his wife M. Burke, in the 1950 census in New Orleans. Both are listed as born Ireland, and there is a child named Mary who is 2 years old. My 1850 birth date is from later census records, so it's possible that it's off. No other obvious families were apparent upon a rather careful search.

In 1960, I find a Mary Ann Burke in the household of Michael Hogan. Don't know if she's the right one at all.

In 1860 there is also a Mary Burke of the right age living in the Female Orphan Asylum in New Orleans. I have not located the Patrick Burke family from the 1850 census in 1860, so it seems possible that Mary was orphaned.

Any ideas?

Deb,

My late father started tracing the Burke family tree about 20yrs ago and only got back as far as Denis O'Hara Burke. Denis is also about my 4xGGrandfather (I canand his two sons John & Peter were seaman who came't remeber his wife's name but have it somewhere) to Australia on the 'Erin Go Bragh' and jumped ship in Moreton Bay. John Burke went on to start up the Capt. John Burke Shipping Co. in Brisbane and Peter Burke went on to take up farming on a parcel of land around Mt Cotton at Brisbane. It is Peter whom I am a descendant of.

Dad tried many years ago writing to the churches and councils in Ireland to find prior ancestors of Denis O'Hara Burke however was told that most records were either burnt or destroyed during conflicts in Ireland.

Have you been able to track down any further information in relation to Denis O'Hara Burke? Would be interested in finishing Dad's project but thought it may be fruitless.

Regards,

Chris Burke.

Giammona and we thought that was a wild coincidence. Sorry we couldn't be helpful to you in your search. Good luck.

Diane, I don't know how often you check this board as your message is fairly old. I believe you and I must be third cousins. My GGGrandfather was also Tobias Burke (GGGrandmother Johana Susan Talty (?)). My GG is Patrick Tobias Burke. My Grandfather was Edward Tobias Francis Burke and my father was Patrick Edward Burke. We knew my GGG (Tobias Burke) had a brother, Michael, whom we were told immigrated to New Zealand. Your post was the first I had heard about all of the other brothers. It's got to be the same family. If you have more information I would be very interested. I'd be happy to share any information I have with you as well.

You see my dad always told me and my older brother that or family came from Ireland thats where the name "Burke" started from the when I read that your family had the same name and then my first name also being Mariah I just stop to wonder. Im 18 years old but I've been looking for someone to tell me something about my dad side of the family since I was 5. We never got the chance to meet his side because he always kept us away and he never told us stories about where he's from or where our grandmother or grandfather started there lives. So were kind of in the dark on that part. Once again Im sorry for wastin your time but i just needed to point it out for my own well being. I hope u find your family soon best of luck on your seaching because i know how it feels.

Bartley Burk-John T Burk-William Burk, Indiana

Hello, I am having some problems finding a line. My wife’s father’s name is Jerry Lee Burk but I haven’t been able to find anything pointing me into a solid direction once I get to Bartley Burk (1818).

I have found Bartley Burk and John T Burk listed next to each other -1860 United States Federal Census, Wabash, Jay, Indiana, post office New Corydon, roll M653_269, page 199, image 201.

I have also found Bartley Burk and William Burk listed next to each other-1850 United States Federal Census, Sandy, Tuscarawas, Ohio, roll M432_735, page 264, image 89.

In the 1870 Census it lists Elizabeth next to John T Burk.
I have found one member on Ancestry with Bartley Burk and John T Burk as brothers, which is how I have them now although they could be cousins but their ages are too close to be father-son.

Any help would be appreciated. I would be happy to email a word doc with the line if you want. Thank you!!

I've just come across this message by Googling "Dooyeher" having just discovered (I think!) that my great grandfather was born at Dooyeher in May 1880. His name was Michael and I believe his parents to be Michael and Mary (nee Lydon) both from Galway. I know more of the family once they moved to England (definitely living in Sheffield by the 1891 census). I wonder if you have any more infomation you could share? Many thanks
Friday, Oct. 8, 1909

"Captain Peter Burke, Sr., who was stricken with paralysis Wednesday night at 10 o'clock, died yesterday morning. ...

"Captain Burke was born in Ireland and was about sixty-six years of age at the time of his death. He came to Mobile when very young and began life as a clerk in the tobacco store of M. Grinnell ."

According to the news account, Burke eventually became sheriff of Mobile County and chief of police in Mobile. He was also in the steamboat business and invested in real property. He was an active member of the Can't-Get-Away-Club, helping those who suffered in the city's Yellow Fever epidemics.
Nancy Burke Woodson, Randolph County AL 1800's

I am trying to determine who the parents were of Nancy Burke who married Matthew P. Woodson. In 1860, they were in Rock Mills, Randolph county, Alabama. Their children were Mary A.E., Sarah F., James H., Augusta A., Martha C., and Lucinda A.

Both Nancy and Matthew are shown in the census as being 33 years old, and born GA, with all the children born AL.

Does anyone know if Nancy was a daughter of Wyley (Wiley) and Sarah Burke, or what the connection is to Martha A. Burke age 43 who also lived nearby?

Any information on this family would be very much appreciated.

Dorothy
