Sorry not to have responded before this. I am going to direct you to the website with this 'canned' message ... "One can join the project by ordering a y-DNA37 or 67 marker test kit from the FamilyTreeDNA.com project web page [It saves some money to order via a project]. The 37 marker result provides the best entry point for initial matches and establishing potential relationships." The webpage mentioned will supply the details, like cost, and so on.

It would be really great if your dad would consent to be tested. You can email me at rburk103 @ hotmail.ca [leave out the spaces around @ ] if you have further questions.

Ruth

Yes we are still looking for participants. The project is located at http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Burkholde... and you one can join the project from that page. A number of family members can chip in to get a male member tested.

Ruth Burkholder is a co-administrator and will concentrate on the genealogical aspects of the extended family tree.

Here is a bit of info that you might not have.
Greetings Patsy,
Hope this finds you well.
I have some Golden/Goldin/Golding info in my gen. data base but have much
more in reference material for Washington/Wilkes/Warren Cos. I will take a
look through it and make a response later.

I tried to post on Rootsweb.com but it would not take my name and password I
use for Ancestry.com which is supposed to work on both. I don't think I ever
had to register there but apparently it is now required.

An older Henry Golden of S.C. with wife and two daughters ages 2-3 was
granted 100 acres of land Sept. 1773 in Wilkes. Jno. Burkhalter granted 200
acres Oct. 1773. They may have also been neighbors in SC.
Carlton

Haven't seen a response to your question, but of course, it could have missed me!
I don't believe Sarah Burkhalter was Cherokee. I have her in my database as the daughter of Jeremiah R. and Dorcas Reese Burkhalter. This line of Burkhalter originated in Berne, Switzerland as far as the research goes. Of course, I guess there is always the possibility of being mixed with Native American by marriage through the generations, but not "full". I show the emigrant on this line was Michael Burkhalter ca 1734.
Mr. Carlton Wood at wwood3@carolina.rr.com has done extensive research on this family even traveling to Switzerland and is always very helpful. My Guru on this line!:>)
DNA connection to Burkholder?
Hello, Burkhalter/Burkholder descendants ... I just want to tell you about an interesting project I have become involved with and hope that you or someone you know will also consider participating in it.

I was contacted and asked to be "the genealogist" for a Burkhalter/Burkholder Family DNA Project that is hosted on Family Tree DNA https://www.familytreedna.com/ by a gentleman named Wayne Kauffman, who has Burkholder Family connections. The project has met an initial goal of investigating whether there is a single line for Burkhalter/Burkholders and is now moving into investigating, confirming or clarifying the family relationships surrounding the early American Burkhalter/Burkholder immigrants.

The Burkholder males who have been tested seem to come from a variety of lines but so far they are going back to just a couple of common immigrant ancestors. We are looking at broadening, from the various known strains of Burkholder family, the number of tested immigrant descendant lines.

At this time, it is direct line Burkhalter/Burkholder males, who carry the surname, which are testing. It is a simple matter to get a test kit and send off the swab that is used. Note that the price of the 37 marker y-DNA test can be shared among members of a family to assist getting someone in your line tested.

I am looking to encourage you or one of your Burkhalter/Burkholder male relatives to help us further our knowledge of the origins of our families.
All the South East GA Burkhalters/Buckhalters seem to stem from Michael who immigrated in 1734. Some of his children (John) moved across the Savannah River to SC and multiplied. It is generally accepted Michael came from Switzerland. Both Michael and son John were Revolutionary Soldiers and/or Revolutionary Patriots. There are many mentions of this family in early GA land grants and other colonial records. Michael's land is shown in early Savannah map/plats.

I am searching for more information on Rudolph/Rodolph Burkhalter and son John Michael Burkhalter died after 1800 in Bulloch Co, GA. I have records from Bulloch, Screven and Effingham but need info regarding both men's wives. John Michael owned a ferry across the Ogeechee River near present day Oliver, Ga. (Screven Co, GA) Rudolph's land was also in same general area but in Effingham Co and maybe Bulloch. An old Indian trading path also called Burkhalter Road passed through area of the ferry.

If Jeptha H Burkhalter descendants haven't discovered their link....Peter Burkhalter, son of John Michael m. Lucretia and they moved to Tattnall Co. after John Michael's death. Peter died fairly early but she lived on to be the legendary "Creasy Buck." I believe they were parents of Jeptha H. Burkhalter. See will and estate settlement of John Michael Burkhalter (Etheldred Hagan/Hagen/Hagin ADMR) in Bulloch and later records of Tattnall Co, GA. as well as 1850 Tattnall Census. It is believed Jeptha H Burkhalter may have been named for Jeptha Hagan who was a recepient in Etheldred's estate.

Can anyone point me in a direction? Thanks Margie H. Barden mhbarden@rose.net

yDNA testing effort for Burkhalter/Burkholder

I am organizing a new project at FamilyTreeDNA.com to investigate whether there are multiple Burkhalter/Burkholder ancestral lines and to identify the one which contains a y-SNP mutation which has been identified within the Cohanim Jewish priests. A Burkholder has been identified with this mutation via 23andMe testing. I currently have 4 Burkholder's who are participating and would like to have some Burkhalter's participate. Especially interested if they can document their European roots prior to 1800. e-mail me off list at wayne (-at-) yahoo (-dot-) com if you may be interested in participating.

This project should lead to the founding of an official Burkhalter/Burkholder surname project at FamilyTreeDNA

Hi! Maybe you can help me. I am the great-granddaughter of Lillian Burkhalter of Pike County, Miss. Her father was Jesse Warren Burkhalter, and his father was John Fleming Burkhalter. Here, though, is where I run into a problem. Ancestry is bringing me to other family trees that suggest Daniel Burkhalter is John's father, though I'm not buying it. John's father, according to the Census of 1880, was born in Georgia; this guy was born in South Carolina. Do you have any idea of who my relatives are?

He is my gggg-grandfather. I have his death date at Mar 1861. I have found him on 1850 and 1860 census - marion County. His age in 1860 is put at 97. There is obit in the Columbus Ga newspaper on him - indicating he died at age 98.
I saw this in an obit abstract book for Columbus, Ga paper.
He also made a will in 1857 - marion County. Mentions his son David N Burkhalter and grandson John T Burkhalter, my ancestors. Just thought you would like to know this info. I believe his wife Sarah has been documented with a death date of 1845. Who knows for sure. But I believe John died in 1861. A lot of facts point to this.

I don't know if this helps, but my ancestor John Burkhalter lived in Wilkes and Marion Counties in Georgia, I know very little about the slaves he owned, but I have read that one slave he owned was named Jack Burkhalter and Jack was a blacksmith. I also read that this Jack Burkhalter had 13 sons. This information was on the Marion County Gagenweb site, You might check there and see what it has. John Burkhalter died in 1861 and left slaves to his son David Burkhalter also of Marion County, but doesn't mention a Jack in his will. Hope this helps.

I have pictures of headstones taken at the Mt. Pisgah cemetery, Talahatchie CO., MS with some of those names. They may not be the same people. There is more that one Isaac, for example. You can read the dates on some of them. If you want me to email them to you, email me at lroberts3@globaleyes.net I am the grandson of Isaac Kenon Burkhalter. I was born in Enid, Mississippi, Talahatchie Co.

Also, I found on one of these sites on ancestry a Burkhalter reunion in Plattsville, AL. An Andy Burkhalter was the contact person phone: 615-822-0681. I have not called him yet, but I intend to. I would like to know where in Alabama the Talahatchie Burkhalters came from also. Hope to hear from you. If you are a Craig we may be distant cuzes. Lloyd Roberts

Re: Rudolph and Katherina Burkhalter, Butler County, Ohio

I have a cousin Gisela, living in Switzerland, who saw the query in a Migros department store newspaper about Rudolf Burkhalter, posted by an Adolf Burkhalter. Biberist seems to be the village Rudolf and Adolf were from. Neither Gisela or myself are related to this Rudolf or Adolf. The following e-mail is what Gisela found online:

Today I am sending you the results of my research about Rudolf Burkhalter. Mr. Adolf Burkhalter, a relative (I guess Rudolf was his grand-uncle), from Biberist in Switzerland wrote the following details in the Migros Newspaper:

I am searching for the descendants of Rudolf Burkhalter, born 27 Oct 1877, who immigrated to the USA around 1900. His daughters are Karoline, born 16 Feb 1901 and Martha, born 21 Dec 1902. Last known address: RR 7, Hamilton, Ohio.

I found the ship records for Rudolf (who came alone) as well as for his wife and the girls two months later. Then I found them in the 1920 Census for St. Clair, Butler County, Ohio. They had another daughter, Johanne, who was born in the USA.

I found another ship record for Rudolph (in America with ph and no longer with f) and his wife in 1928 coming back from Europe. At that time they were US citizens. Then I found the death records for Rudolph and Katharina.

In the 1930 Census I only found Martha as a 26 year old teacher living in Seven Mile, Butler County. There are also some entries of Martha in the Hamilton High School Yearbooks around 1920. The one from 1922 has a picture of her. Note: [Gisela did later find Rudolf in the 1930 census with the erroneous spelling of Buckhalter]

The last thing I found was a World War I Draft Registration Card for Rudolph from Sep 12, 1918. The address is RR 7, Hamilton. His birthday is given as Oct 26 and not 27 (as stated by Adolf Burkhalter).

Here is what I wrote Adolf already:
Am 14. Oktober 1905 kam Rudolf B., 28 Jahre, allein in New York an.

As for contacting Swiss Burkhalters, the online Swiss telephone book should let you know how many locations are listed.

Don Ebbeler
ebbeler@ix.netcom.com

I found a picture of Odie W. Burkhalter's headstone that I took last year. I will email it too you ,if you wish. I'm not sure if that can happen at this site. If you want to call me at 618-687-2256 and give me your email address, I'll send you the picture. I'm Lloyd Roberts, grandson of Issac Burkhalter. I'm not sure how I am related to Odie, probably a cousin.

I would like to contact the Swiss Burkhalters if you can help me. This is the first I've heard that there were Ohio Burkhalters. How do we contact the Swiss family?

I was at Mt Pisgah Cemetery near Enid a year ago and noticed a headstone for Odie Burkhalter. My grandfather was Issac Burkhalter who is buried there along with much of my family. I did not notice his middle name. The family mentioned an Odie Burkhalter once in a while. If I remember correctly he was a military man. I may have a picture of his headstone.

Small world. I live in Jackson County, Illinois. I saw a Black History account a few years ago during Black History Month of famous people in Jackson County. I'll go try to locate info on Mr. Burkhalter and get back with you. This is interesting. I didn't know there were African American Burkhalters. We could be distant cousins. I am a desendant of the Enid, Mississippi Burkhalters, all caucasion. Right now we have not gotten info on Georgia or Alabama Burkhalters. Will keep looking.
