This is ten years past date of your inquiry, but hope it's helpful. I am a G-granddaughter of Commodore D. Burkholder. I don't have my records handy but will share a few facts. He and and Sarah Martin were divorced about 1920 and he died in Los Angeles in about 1938. Sarah lived in Long Beach, California before her passing. She used to host Sunday dinners for her children and grandchildren. Her and Commodore's children included her sons, Carl and Frank, and her daughter, Ada. At one time Sarah operated a small hotel in Lund, Utah on the Union Pacific Railroad line. And she resided in Idaho for a short while.

Burkholders in Brecknock, Lancaster Co PA 1790's

I'm currently research Burkholders who lived in Brecknock, Lancaster Co PA in the 1790's, looking for a possible father to an ancestor. Does anyone happen to have info about these Burkholders? An ancestor of mine, Anna Burckholder married a Daniel Merckle in 1793 in Exeter Twp., Berks Co PA. The marriage record indicates she was from Brecknock. It could be she was from Brecknock, Berks Co, but there are no Burkholders in Berks Co in 1790, only Lancaster. I've written down Burkholders that lived in Brecknock, Lancaster Co in 1790 and have one name, John. Others who lived close to Brecknock is: George, Henry, John, & Martin, all of whom lived in the Cocalico area. But the record said Brecknock, so I'm leaning towards John. Anna was born about 1765. First son born to her & Daniel they named John. Second son/next child was Henry. The Markleys (common and modern spelling) were mostly Reformed. Can anyone help?

I believe I found some relations here......Jesse was the brother of my 2nd Great Grandfather Albert Burkholder. The information listed on this board is very interesting and I would love to know more if any further information is available. I am not sure if you are still on Ancestry, but if you are I would like to contact you on the side. I would also be interested in any copies of letters that you mention you have to show my mother, who would be Albert's Great Granddaughter, David and Mary's 2nd Great Granddaughter. Please let me know. Katie in PA!

i would be most interested in any information on Barbara Burkholder wife of John Hively. John's death shows:Death of Joseph Hively, Oct 27, 1913 Richland Twnshp 69 yr, 5 mos, 36 days, father John b. OH; mother Barbara Burkholder b. OH; buried South Park Cemetery. Per Smith Funeral records: Sophia Hively ordered the funeral. Joseph died of Bright's disease.
i believe the following is true:
Joseph Hammond was the son of John Hively and Barbara Burkholder. Some sources show that Jacob Hammond (aka Joseph Hively) was born in Michigan. However, the 1910 Cass Co IN Miami Township census shows the parents of Cleve Hammond were born in PA,and the 1900 census of Chester Twp, Wabash County shows the parents of Cleve Hammond and his sister Lillian were born in Ohio.

dear ruth: first let me apologize for not sending the money for the reports. I hav been diagnosed with breast cancer and have spent the last 6 months in a virtual hell.
anyway, send me the amt. and the check will go out.
secondly, i think my dad robert c. burkholder, who is 86 will do the dna test. Email me at elissabeam@yahoo.com so we can figure that part out. My 88 year old grandfather just got back from a trip to switzerland to see the old burkholder place and it still stands. He has photos.
thanks, melissa

We have just started gathering mtDNA information from tested individuals who have Anabaptist ancestors. In general mtDNA is useful for providing DEEP ancestral information. Due to the wide diversity of mtDNA results it will take a much larger set of tested individuals with exceptional paper trails for mtDNA results to be useful for establishing matches within the last 500 years. Even for individuals who completely sequence their mtDNA a perfect match will be difficult to work with due to the lack of maternal lineage documentation.

e-mail off list with your mtDNA haplogroup and maternal line and I'll see if it matches anything in the current set of data. Sybilla is a rather unique name and she is not presently defined in the data set. wkauffman --(at)-- yahoo -----(dot)----- com

Fascinating.

I seem to be related to someone who probably left the Langau area in the early 1700's Palatine emmigration. I have traced back to a woman named Sybilla, married to Jacob Longanacre in the mid 1700's in Pennsylvania or Virginia. Jacob comes from a Mennonite family. My mtDNA seems comes from her, but I have hit a wall in my attempts to trace her origins. Here's my mtDNA;
16224C, 16234T, 16311C, 16519C
73G, 114T, 263G, 315.1C, 497T

I'd very much appreciate any leads to these origins.

Mike

So, Jim, have you checked out Franklin county PA? What Burkholder families were there in 1820? Did any of the men who were there at that time die there later and leave a will naming your Christian? You need to do some further digging, or find someone who will do it for you. The book is only a place to start.

Ruth

Burkholder DNA testing ... to see if we all connect!

Hello, Burkholder descendants ... I just want to tell you about an interesting project I have become involved with and hope that you or someone you know will also consider participating in it.

I was contacted and asked to be "the genealogist" for a Burkholder Family DNA Project that is hosted on Family Tree DNA https://www.familytreedna.com/ by a gentleman named Wayne Kauffman, who has Burkholder Family connections. The project has met an initial goal of investigating whether there is a single line for Burkhalter/Burkholders and is now moving into investigating, confirming or clarifying the family relationships surrounding the early American Burkhalter/Burkholder immigrants.

The Burkholder males who have been tested seem to come from a variety of lines but so far they are going back to just a couple of common immigrant ancestors. We are looking at broadening, from the various known strains of Burkholder family, the number of tested immigrant descendant lines.

At this time, it is direct line Burkholder males, who carry the surname, which are testing. It is a simple matter to get a test kit and send off the swab that is used. Note that the price of the 37 marker y-DNA test can be shared among members of a family to assist getting someone in your line tested.

I am looking to encourage you or one of your Burkholder male relatives to help us further our knowledge of the origins of our Burkholder families.

For more info contact me at ruth.burk[at]sympatico[dot]ca

There is an association and you can go to Burkholder Association and go from there.
Over the last couple of days an interesting discovery has been made with a surname that some of us normally associate as being Mennonite. Early last week a male Burkholder – Mennonite ancestry is not yet known - joined the 23andMe based project. Analysis of his results showed that was distantly related to a number of the existing project members one of which who had a Burkholder ancestor in their family tree.

Further analysis of the Burkholder y-chromosome DNA results determined that he had a unique value for one of the DNA bases (SNPs) that had only been found in one other individual. This result was reported to a number of additional individuals within the genetic genealogy community who then made the link, via other test results, to a new Jewish Cohane project. Last night an individual was identified within this project as having the same SNP result as Burkholder. Not only may this SNP define a signature for a group of ancient Jewish priests but it may also provide evidence that some Anabaptists have ancient Jewish roots! Over the next couple of weeks FamilyTreeDNA.com will be making available a new DNA test that will allow for broader testing which will better define the situation.

At this time we have no additional Burkholder participants in any of the DNA projects at FamilyTreeDNA or at 23andMe.

I would like to locate and discuss with interested male Burkholder's the testing options that they could particpate in as part of this surname genealogical research effort.

contact me off-list for details wkauffman(---at---)g m a i l (dot) c o m
