My family name is Purkey and for many years the family has been trying to determine our roots. There is a large concentration in Tennessee and scattered about the US. However, no one really has a clue where we came from (Germanic is generally agreed) or when we arrived in the US. While on business in Switzerland I ran across the the name Burki. Our family always suspected our name was changed over time (Purkeypile, Burkeybile, Burkey, Perky, ect). Any information on any connections to the Tennessee Purkeys would be helpful.

Bürgi/Bürki DNA Project

I have recently created a DNA project for direct patrilineal descendants of anyone with the surname Bürgi. Even if you don't have proof that you descend from anyone with that name exactly, if you think your surname could possibly be a variant of it, you are encouraged to join! (I realize that there are multiple different origins for the surname "Burki"--to be clear, this project is intended for those of suspected Alemannic German origin, as opposed to, say, Afghani origin).

It is a Y-DNA project, so only men can test; any women wishing to participate will need a male relative who also descends directly on the paternal line from the Bürgis to test. You can test through Ancestry and then join the group; that will add the results to the group automatically. Or, if you test through another company (like Family Tree DNA), it is possible to manually enter your results.

We do have some preliminary results: descendants of Ulrich Bergey, an early Mennonite immigrant to America, match one another and have the haplogroup R1b1b2a1a2c; descendants of John Burcky, a later Mennonite immigrant to America, and descendants of Hugh Parkey, a suspected descendant of earlier Mennonite immigrants to America, match one another and have the haplogroup I2*.

The project is located here: http://groups.ancestry.com/group/burgi

I have a bare single line of Burki's going back to abt 1650. This was done for a distant Ohio relative many years ago by a genealogist in Switzerland. Would be happy to send you a copy of what she was told but have to find them - they seemed to have escaped from their appointed file. Also, I would rather send it via snail-mail - don't trust my computer skills yet.
Don

My greatgrandmother, Madgalena Burki, immegrated to Ohio, USA in about 1852. She married Johannes Fischer/Fisher from the Bern, Switzerland area in Ohio after his wife died during the passage on the same ship as the Burki family. He had 2 sons from his first marrage. Both Johannes and Magdalena died abt 1879 - he in Ohio after she died in Indiana. It is not known if Magdalena's father was living in 1852.

Let me know if this makes sense in your gelealogy.
