Dear Martin,

Just an update on George Burkin b 1863 Croydon Surrey, it looks like George didn't marry until 1898 when he married Elizabeth Studd. The George Burkin that married Elizabeth Ellen L Hester, was George Burkin b 1862 Chelsea Middlesex, but baptised 3 Aug 1862 St John the Baptist, Croydon. This George was a plumber like his father and appears in Croydon before 1881, in the 1891 and 1901 censuses George is married to Ellen, but in the 1911 census George's wife is recorded and Elizabeth Ellen. This makes sense when both George (b. 1862) and Elizabeth Hester were recorded as being born in Middlesex and both families move to Croydon sometime before 1881.

George Burkin b. 1862 son of:

Michael Burkin b ~1840 Croydon and
Mary Ann Saunders Married 4 Aug 1861.

Michael Burkin was the son of:
George Burkin b ~1809 Kent (but resident in Croydon from before 1851) and
Julia b. ~1812 Kent.

Regards Russell

Dear Martin,

I am not sure how Jonathan Thomas Burkin fits into the Burkin family tree. I am sure that I have identified Charles Burkin's father and grandfather from the IGI and censuses. I have found the following Thomas Burkin families near Croydon in the early 1800s:

A:
Thomas Burkin m. Mary Ann Gibb 02 Apr 1798 —Saint John The Baptist, Croydon, Surrey, England .
1.	Elizabeth Burkin: baptism/christening date:20 Jan 1799 - SANDERSTEAD,SURREY,ENGLAND
2.	Fanny Burking: baptism/christening date:10 May 1801 - SANDERSTEAD,SURREY,ENGLAND
3.	Mary Ann Burkin: birth date:07 Jul 1803, baptism/christening date:24 Jul 1803 - SANDERSTEAD,SURREY,ENGLAND
4.	Sarah Burkin: birth date:18 Jul 1805, baptism/christening date:04 Aug 1805 - SANDERSTEAD,SURREY,ENGLAND
5.	John Burkin: birth date: 05 May 1808, baptism/christening date:29 May 1808 - SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST,CROYDON,SURREY,ENGLAND
6.	Jonathan Thomas Burkin: baptism/christening date: 28 Oct 1810 - SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST,CROYDON,SURREY,ENGLAND
7.	Jenny Burkin: baptism/christening date:13 Jan 1815 - SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST,CROYDON,SURREY,ENGLAND
8.	Thomas Burkins: baptism/christening date:20 Jul 1818 - SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST,CROYDON,SURREY,ENGLAND
9.	William Burkin: baptism/christening date:20 Apr 1821 - SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST,CROYDON,SURREY,ENGLAND

B:
Thomas Burkin m. Catherine Boorer/Boozer 09 Feb 1800 - Saint John The Baptist,Croydon,Surrey,England
No children found.

C:
Thomas Burkin m. Elizabeth ?
1.	Thomas Burkin: birth date:18 Mar 1810, baptism/christening date:28 Mar 1810 - SANDERSTEAD,SURREY,ENGLAND
2.	John Burkin: about 1814 (from 1841 and 1851 censuses)
3.	Eliza Burkin: baptism/christening date:31 Mar 1816 - Sanderstead, Surrey, England
4.	William Burkin: baptism/christening date:20 Dec 1818 - Sanderstead, Surrey, England
5.	James Burkin: baptism/christening date:24 Jun 1821 - Sanderstead, Surrey, England
6.	Michael Burkin: baptism/christening date:22 Aug 1824 - Sanderstead, Surrey, England
7.	Richard Burkin: baptism/christening date:13 Feb 1827 - Sanderstead, Surrey, England

This household is recorded in the 1841 census twice, once in Croydon (crossed out on the scan) and once in Sanderstead:
Thos Burkin Head 70
Elzth Burkin Wife 65
John Burkin Son 30
Eliza Burkin Dau 25

And in the 1851 census at 9 Selsdon Road Sanderstead
Thomas Burkin Head 78 born Caterham, Surrey
John Burkin Son 37 Sanderstead
William Burkin Son 20 ""
James Burkin Son 28 ""
Michael Burkin Son 25 ""
Charles Burkin Grandson 12 Croydon

This confirms that Charles' father was Thomas born 1810 and his grandfather was Thomas born abt 1773,in Caterham. I am happy to identify Charles grandfather as Thomas Burkin born Caterham with baptism/christening date:12 Mar 1774 CATERHAM, SURREY, ENGLAND father's name:William Burkin mother's name:Elizabeth

The most likely candidate that I can find for the Thomas Burkin who married Mary Gibb is Thomas Burkin born 1775 Sutton with baptism/christening date:11 Aug 1775 SUTTON, SURREY, ENGLAND father's name:William Berkin mother's name:Mary (though I have no hard evidence for this).

I have thought that the Thomas who married Catherine Boorer/Boozer could have also married Elizabeth, as there isn't enough Thomas Burkins of the appropriate ages about at the time.

Regards Russell
Dear Russell,

Thanks for that!

I have been trying to find a relative who was transported to Australia since I started my family history research!!

The IGI shows the parents of my Henry Burkin (b 1806) as James and Elisabeth.

I would need to show that Charles' father (Thomas) and James were brothers or cousins. Given the relative rarity of the names and the fact that they were using the same church in Croydon this seems a strong possibility - so, I'll keep digging.

Cheers

Martin

Hi Martin

I have been looking further into the ancestry of Charles Burkin, as part of that I considered that Charles' father Thomas b 1810 could have been Jonathan Thomas Burkin, so looked into Jonathan, eliminating him as a direct ancestor of mine but he lead an interesting life which I will outline here:
Jonathan Thomas Burkin born 1810

Parents Thomas Burkin and Mary Ann Gibbs

Baptism 28 Oct 1810: SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST, CROYDON, SURREY, ENGLAND

April 1826 Trial at Surrey for Larceny; sentence 6 Months imprisonment

March 1829 Trial at Surrey Assizes for Housebreaking; sentence Death commuted to transportation for life

7 Oct 1829 Departure for NSW on the Katherine Stewart Forbes.

18 Feb 1830 Arrived Sydney NSW

1 Aug 1839 Granted ticket of leave

11 Mar 1840 Permission to marry Rose Hughes (arr 1839 on Planter) granted

24 Mar 1840 married Rose Hughes at St. Johns, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia

20 Aug 1841 Elizabeth Birkine born to Jonathan and Rosannah Burkine, bpt Sep 1841 St. James, Melbourne, New South Wales, Australia

29 Feb 1844 Jonathan Thomas Burkin convict came on the KS Forbes 1830 sentenced to life assigned to Wm Moore Broken River, granted ticket-of-leave 44/728 Occupation: Bullock driver

20 Dec 1848 granted Conditional Pardon 49/0041

1853 Mary Ann Burkin born to Jonathan Burkin and Mary Ann Darcy, Melbourne Victoria reg1853/45578

17 Jan 1854 married Mary Ann Courtney (Widow) nee Darcy at St. James, West Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

1856 Victorian Electoral Roll: Jonathan Thomas Burkin Melbourne District, St. Patrick’s Sub-district

c1860 Caraille Burkin born at Newtown, Geelong, Victoria Father: Jonathan Burkin

1869 Death of Mary Ann Burkin (wife or daughter?)

Living here in Australia but not having any Convict ancestors meant that I found it interesting finding out what records were available here for convicts so I tried to find out as much as possible about Jonathan Burkin's life.

Working on the 1841 and 1851 censuses has enabled me to be sure that Charles father was Thomas Burkin born 18 Mar 1810, baptism/christening date:28 Mar 1810 - SANDERSTEAD,SURREY,ENGLAND Parents Thomas and Elizabeth Burkin. I will detail more later.

Regards Russell
Dear Russell,

That Buchin was a great spot!! I had similar problems with the 1881 census on my Grimwoods which wasted years and a lot of money!! For some reason phonetic searched did not pick up Grinwood as a variant - so, my great grandfather was already in London then and not still in Suffolk!

I will be in New Zealand, briefly, next week.

Cheers

Martin

HI Lynn,
I don't know if I ever replied to you. Your James was born in 1899 - is that correct? My father was Rex Maulder, 18th child (yes 18) of Charlotte Maulder nee Burkin and William James Maulder. My father was born in 1928 and married my mother Esme McIntyre in 1949. They lived in Auckland.

What fabulous sleuthing!!!!
I also found that death of Esther Burkin in New Zealand and because it corresponded with the age of my George Burkin (married Charlotte Squelch and settled in Hawkes Bay, NZ in the 1870's) I wondered if George's sister Esther had also come to NZ - but that would have meant she never married and I did not get around to figuring out who she was. Three of the children were baptised in 1835 in Croydon - Henry, George and Esther. The ages would have matched but it was Esther Burkin nee Lane.
Well done russelandanna

Dear Martin,

Just an update on George Burkin 1863 and his family. Finally found Charles, Esther, George and younger sister Harriett in the 1881 census Surname recorded as Buchin.

Further light was shed on the family when I was contacted by a third cousin once removed descended from a sibling of Esther Lane. Esther left Charles in the early 1880s (after the census) and took all the children to New York - returning to England fairly soon after. Then in 1887 Esther and the two girls left to New Zealand arriving on 3 Dec. Many of Esther's siblings had previously settled in the Auckland area of NZ). Ellen married Edward Mayhew in 1894 having 4 children. Harriet married John Noman (a widower with children) in 1906, they had no children. Esther died in Auckland in July 1910 aged 76 (I had the wrong Esther previously: Deaths Mar 1897 BURKIN Esther Ann 61 Croydon 2a141). Ellen died on 17th Oct 1952 aged 87 and Harriett died on the 26th Aug 1948 aged 71.

This information reminded me of my Grandmother saying that her father (George) had been to America, and made much more sense of her saying that she had relatives in NZ - I assumed this referred to George and Charlotte Burkin - though it seemed improbable that she should have heard/remembered about them going to NZ.

Regards Russell

She couldn't recall my father but did remember his too sisters, Norma and Avis, from when she was a young girl. She mentioned that she might be able to dig out some old photos and would get your to email them. I would really appreciate that if it's not too much trouble.

Cheers
Lynne

Hi Lynne

We're the same. They were such a big family and it seems such a shame that everyone lost contact. My "Pop" was such a wonderful man - miss him every day. He would love the fact that we are talking. Mum has some early memories of going up North and visiting so it would be great for her to share those as well. She bowls so evening would probably be the best time to catch her.

Talk soon.
Col

That would be great - I have some 30 relatives killed in the wars and am gradually putting together a file - including pictures of their memorials. I was in Brussels last summer and took some in Halle - about 20 miles South - and in Singapore a couple of years back.

I hope to do a big battlefield tour in the next year or two; starting by taking the Eurostar Train to Lille and working my way out from there..

M

Dear Colleen,

Thanks for that.

I have my own design of "tree" of eleven generations from Richard Berkin and Catherine Harber.

Once I've updated it for the new information I'll send you a copy.

The English Berkin/Burkins were all in Croydon, Surrey and its immediate surrounds.

Martin

Hi Martin

Bit more information for you:
John Henry Scott born 19 August 1905 died 1 July 1989. Married Dorothy Margarett Mary Heaphy and had three childern - Ronald John Scott (decd), Margarett Jocelyn Scott (decd) and Valerie Margarett Scott (Bredican) my mum and pleased to say very much still with us. She married James Bredican (Swinford Ireland) and they have three childrn - myself Colleen, John and Kevin. I might start looking at pulling all this information together and doing a family tree I think. Isn't it great to learn the history. If you ever feel like catching up Mum would love to hear from you (006445697846).

Colleen

Dear "C"/Lynne/Karen (Karen, I think we exchanged e-mails back in 2001),

I have the following:

Esther Burkin was born in Croydon, Surrey in 1865 (Croydon q4 2a 193) and died in 1906 at Waipukurau, Hawkes Bay. She married Robert Scott (b1847 Auckland; died 1909 Waipukarau) in 1887.

I have the following children for them:

Amy Scott (1889 - ?)
Charles John Scott (1890 - ?)
Robert McDonald Scott (1891 - ?)
George Thomas Scott (1893 - 1916)
Olive Scott (1894 - ?)
Isabelle Scott (1896 - ?)
Samuel James Scott (1899 - ?) [presumably your James William Scott]

They were all born in either Porangahau or Waipukarau.

George Thomas Scott was a private in the 2nd Battalion of the Auckland Regiment, NZEF, and died on 15 September 1916 and is commemorated on the CATERPILLAR VALLEY (NEW ZEALAND) MEMORIAL, which commemorates more than 1,200 officers and men of the New Zealand Division who died in the Battles of the Somme in 1916, and whose graves are not known

I have not got John Henry [Later: 1905 to 1989, I see!]; Kathleen or Maude – do you have dates of birth for them? I imagine that they fit in from 1900 to Esther’s death in 1906. The fact that we both have a George Thomas Scott who was killed in 1916 on the Somme almost certainly means that it is the same family.

However, I have no details of the Scott marriages and children; but would be pleased to have them to update my records.

Esther was the eldest of 12 children born to George Burkin (1831 to 1918) and Charlotte Squelch (1847 to 1917). Esther and her two eldest sisters were born in Croydon and her eldest brother, George, was born on the SS Bebbington en route to New Zealand.

I have some details on descendants from most of the 12 children in New Zealand, if of interest.

George Burkin was the second son of George Burkin (1812 to 1870) and Julia Kentfield (1811 to 1887). His elder brother Henry (1829 to 1869) was my great great grandfather. So, if you descend from Esther we are (somewhat distant!!) cousins.

I can get the line back to Richard Berkin (? to 1694).

I live in the UK but am currently working in Vanuatu and so pass through New Zealand on a regular basis – usually just for a couple of days in Auckland – although this January I did go to Hamilton and Rotorua as well.

Best Regards,

Martin

PS Please contact me directly on martindezeals@yahoo.com – it is easier!
Hi,

My father, Thomas Robert Maxwell Scott, had parents called James William Scott and Margaret Martha Scott. Perhaps Margaret sometimes went by the name Rita. I ordered James' birth certificate and that shows date of birth as 5 June 1899 and that his parents were Robert Scott and Hester Scott, (formerly Burkin). I am pretty sure that the Hester is misspelt and should be Esther.

Who are your parents?

Dear Martin,

Thanks for your reply, it gives me some further leads to investigate. I had a suspicion that George had married earlier - his adjustment of his age and looking at the BDM indices there were more marriages in the Croydon district of George Burkins in the 1880's and 1890's than were born in the 1860's and 70's.

Regards Russell.

Dear Russell,

There seems to have been at least one further sibling – James born 4/2/1869; baptised 4/9/1870 [Mar 1869 Croydon 2a 243]. However, he seems to have died in infancy [Dec 1870 Croydon 2a 130].

There is a Harriet marrying in 1887 [Sep 1887 Kingston 2a 514] and an Ellen in 1889 [Dec 1889 Fulham 1a 523] who could be your George’s sisters.

I have a George marrying Elizabeth Hester (1864 - ?) in 1885. Perhaps an earlier marriage for your man – or a different George?

I also descend from Richard Berkin (? – 1694); Richard Berkin (1677 – 1756); Richard Berkin (1708 – 1782); William (1735 - ?); then William (1768 - ?) the elder brother of your Thomas (1774 - ?).

I show the 1810 birth as Jonathan Thomas Burkin; however, there was a Thomas born in 1818.

Cheers

Martin
Hi I have just found this thread. My great grandfather was George Burkin b. 1863 Croydon His Parents were Charles 1840 and Esther Lane 1834. I think I have the continuing Burkin line right Thomas 1810, Thomas 1773, William 1744, Richard 1708, Richard 1677 and Richard ~1650. I have used the IGI and censuses to find siblings.
My main problem is filling in details about George and his sisters Ellen b.1865 and Harriet b.1867. The family appears in the 1871 census with surname Barkin. Ester's Mother Harriet Trodd was also living with them. I cannot find any mention of Harriet after 1871, Ellen appears in the 1881 census working as a servant. But Charles and the rest of the family are missing. Charles died 1890 and Esther in 1897. George died early in 1944, my mother going to see him just before her 10th birthday. George married Elizabeth Studd in 1898, and their family appears in the 1901 census where he is listed as 4 years older than his wife instead of the 10 that he was.

Does any one Know of George and his siblings in the late 1800's

Thanks Russell Hall

There is a lady named Elaine Wiltshire who wrote a genealogy book about the Burkin family of Cudham. It seems to be in many of the local libraries. I would google her name - she is very pleasant and helped me out with my Burkins.

Hi

I am a descendant of George Burkin (born 26 Jan 1865, Ewell, Surrey, died 15 Feb 1949, Sheffield)and Mary Elizabeth Massa (born 26 Nov 1865, Sheffield, died 13 Mar 1949, Sheffield).

I have the marriage certificate (11 Mar 1889, St Paul's, Sheffield).

I am currently trying to gain information on Jacob Burkin (George's father) who, I believe was born in Derby, was a member of the Derbyshire militia and moved to London to join the Royal Marines. I believe that he served on HMS Spiteful at the siege of Sevastopol and then left the Marines to join 5th Royal Irish Lancers. He married Maria (or Mary) Perkins 18 Nov 1856 at the Register Office in Greenwich.

Are you willing to swap any information?

Regards.

There were a few Esther Burkins. The earliest in my family was the daughter of George Burkin and Julia Kentfield christened in 1835 in Croydon, Surrey along with her brothers George and Henry. The next one was daughter of that George born in 1865. This one was my great aunt and she came to NZ around 1875 with her parents George and Charlotte (also known as Lottie) and lived in Waipawa.

John Henry Scott 1905 to 1989 - my grandfather. Mum thinks that Esther died while pop was in WWII - are you sure about the dates. Mum remembers visiting the home. Pops dad worked for a George Hunter - evidently pop's father was a fencer. Does this follow?

Dear Colleen,

I have made a lot of progress since the last post but did not know about George Thomas - thanks for that. The data I now have is below. I would be grateful for additions, etc. Perhaps direct to me at martindezeals@yahoo.com would be better.

Thanks

Martin

Esther Burkin (1865 – 1906) married Robert Scott (1847 – 1909) in 1887.
Ester is my mother's grandmother. Not sure about Charlotte - Mum's never heard the name Charlotte. Mum's family didn't really hear about that side of the family - only Ester's husband's side. Ester had a big family - the oldest, George Thomas Scott was killed at the Somme. I believe some of the Morman sites are very good at tracing family history. Best of luck. Colleen
