Trying to find more family information

Hello all. It appears my Dad's family is part of the Dave Bartlow research "orphan line" from Isaac Burklow. Here is my line more directly.

Grandmother: Dorothy Mae Burklow daughter of James Thomas Burklow & Della (Dellia) Drew

Great-Grandfather: James Thomas Burklow (also found listed as "John Thomas" but all have same death date of Feb. 1978 and my parents attended that funeral in KY.) son of

Great-Great Grand-parents: John Henry Burklow (son of James William & Elizabeth Riley) & Ernie Mattie Floyd

And so on and so on back.
My father was raised primarily by his great grand parents John Henry and Ernie Mattie. He lost touch with everyone after their deaths and (I am assuming) his move into Southern Illinois. My sister and I are interested in tracing back our family and also connecting with relatives. My Dad's immediate Aunts and one Uncle have passed away and we are not really familiar with anymore family members though I met some when I was a little girl at a wedding reception. I appreciate any and all information.

Elaina

I hope I am not years too late on this...but I am pretty sure Della is my great-grandmother. She was married to my great-grandfather John Thomas Burklow who is also listed in records as James Thomas Burklow but his death date is always the same as well as surrounding family dares so I know they are the same person. The only things I know about Della is that she divorced my grandfather, he maiden name was Drew, and her birthdate is I believe in 1910(?). My dad alway thought she was either Welsh or Irish. Email me! burklowem25@uww.edu

I am looking for information on the Burklows mainly to try to find my birth grandparents. My father was born on October 17th 1954 and was adopted out to Bryant Thomas Burklow and his wife Evelyn. They both died when I was young and so did he so I have no idea about my birth family and would like to learn more. Id also like to learn more about the Burklow family. My adopted grandparents lived in Michigan City Indiana at the time of their death. No other real info except that my adopted grandmothers maiden name was White. Thanks, Angela :)

Hello! I can't believe I stumbled across this message board. My name is Kelly and my great grandfather was Fred Burklow. He was married to Della "Effie". His daughter Cecile was my grandmother. Her son, Ted, is my dad! I'm very interested in learning about my family history. There is so much on the Burklow family, but I don't know where to start. Your father's sister, Brooksie: what ever happened to her? Does anybody really know? I can remember my grandma Cecile talking about her briefly when I was younger. I would love to hear any info about my Burklow ancestors!

Catherine!

Your father was one of my favorite cousins! I remember playing cards with him as a kid-stacking them up like castles. I remember when he moved to Wisconsin. I never met your mother or any of the kids! Wayne has two sisters, Faye and Colleen. I think Faye lives in Salt Lake City. I don't know where Colleen is anymore. I think my folks hear from Faye once in a while. They loved your father very much and were really sad to hear of his passing. Wayne's father's name was also Wayne. He lived with us for a while when I was a kid. Wayne, Sr. was my father's brother. My father and mother are still alive and living in Illinois about 5 minutes from me! Wayne's mother and father were Miles (he went by the name of Fred) and Della (her maiden name was Atnip). They had 6 kids: Brooksie, Ceil, Clarence, Glen, Wayne and Don (my father). My father is the only living sibling left. He is 77. My grandfather Fred died in 1960 and grandma died 1 year later. I knew them both. My name is Nancy Burklow and I was born in 1955. I have two brothers Dan and Jim. My parents could tell you so much about your father and his side of the family!! I have some great pictures-including the wedding picture of Fred and Della in 1905.

Small world, huh?!

A.H.Burklow,

Joyce, Checked my census records and found A.H. Burklow,Jr., w/mother, Emma Jones, b.Feb.1857,IL. in Perry Co.,MO.,Brazean Twp. in 1900. Her 2nd hubby must not have lived long. Viola(1873) and Harry(1878), as you must have found them in 1880, were with uncles, James(Sarah) Vaughn David(Mary) Williams, suggesting that Sarah and Mary were natural aunts and sisters of A.H. Burklow,Sr. Andrew H.,Jr.,b. 25 Dec 1878, died 1 Aug 1953, in San Mateo Co.,CA. An Emma G. Burklow died there 29 Apr 1929(could be his mother or his wife.). If I read the ages correctly, A.H.,Sr's sisters were born in 1845(Sarah) and 1852(Mary),in Illinois. They claim their father was born in Tennessee and mother in Illinois. There weren't many Burklows who went to TN. that early and I'm not locating Sarah and Mary easily in IL or KY in 1850 1860. We're dealing with an orphan line that will take some deeper research. Stay with me on this one and we may yet find A.H. Burklow's parents.
Dave Bartlow, dbartlow@sprynet.com.

Perry Co.,MO.

Joyce,
My reference was to the 1900 Census in Brazeau Twp.,Perry Co.,MO. In 1880, they were in Somerset Twp., Jackson Co.,IL. Thanks for verifying the "maternal aunt" status. I was very skeptical of the TN birthplace for A.H.,Sr's parents. I'm working under the assumption that A.H.,Sr. was about the same age as his spouse, Emma Golliher(b.1857,IL.)and probably born in IL. In 1900 Perry Co.,MO., Brazeau Twp., there is also a Unis Burklow, b. Mar 1900,MO., enum. as the "dau." of Harry Young,64,MO,MO,MO.,Farmer; his wife, Elasafin,51,MO,MO,MO.,and their ch., Louisa,17(Sep1882,MO.), and Martha,14(Jan 1886,MO.). Confusing, but may be related. I'm not finding a candidate in the Jackson Co.,IL. area, though I'm aware of a Harrison Burklow, an officer in the GAR who was hung in 1878 for murdering his wife's lover after walking in on them in bed. That widow was Nancy (Blaylock) Burklow who resided in Desoto Twp., Jackson Co.,IL. Though it doesn't seem to be your line, your A.H. Burklow,Sr. seems either deceased by 1879/80, or guilty of abandonment and successful evasiveness during each census year. Dave

The one I'm relating now came from the History of Johnson Co.,IL.,p.137-38.
"This county has had its share of crime and much to our shame one man executed by the law. Harrihon[sic] Burklow, a man belonging to an old respected family, whle under the influence of liquor, shot and killed a man by the name of Wagner. Wagner tried to pursuade him not to kill him, as Burklow had gone with that intent, to where Wagner was working, but crazed with liquor he would not listen to the pleadings and shot him outright. Burklow had served in the Civil War, and had many friends and relatives in the community, who would have assisted him, but the case was so aggravated, the death penalty was invoked, and he was hanged in the old jail yard just a little above where the present jail now stands; in spite of the fact, that the hanging was private, as the gallows had been built in a large inclosure people filled the town to its limits. J. H. Carter was the sheriff and W.R. Wiley was the deputy who carried out the sentence of the law about 1877."

Joyce, Don't be taken in by small discrepancies. William Henry "Harrison" Burklow was hanged 14 Dec 1877. You can see why one source could estimate the event in 1877 and another in 1878. I have another source which claims he is buried in Chpman Cem.,Johnson Co.,IL.,"age 46", making his birthyear 1831. He would have been considerably older than Elizabeth "Nancy" Blaylock, his much younger 2nd wife, the one that caused his jealous rage after having come home and found her in bed with Wagner.
dbartlow@sprynet.com

Joyce, William Harrison Burklow m. Nancy Eliz. Blaylock, 14 Aug 1872, Jackson Co.,IL. Elizabeth m. 2nd, c1890, a Mr. ODEN, who died before 1900. Yes, nothing's connected yet officially. I found another Chapman Cem. compilation which gives Harrison Burklow's age at 61 years(b.1816). It has been assumed by others that Harrison is a half-brother to Miles Burklow(1806,KY.-1880)of Johnson Co.,IL. and John D. Burklow(d.c1844)of Perry Co.,IL. Since Miles' lines are pretty much compiled and documented, we probably do have to focus on John D. and Harrison Burklow as possible ancestors. Also, I'm aware of the IL State Marriage Index to 1900, but not of a Wm. R. Burklow marriage in 1864 Pulaski Co., to a Martha Cairns being on it. Dave B.

Catherine,
My Burklow line lived in Johnson, Perry, and Williamson Counties in the southern part of IL. My grandfather's name was Henry Harrison Burklow and they called him Harrison. There are other men in this family who also were named Harrison. He was born in 1870. I have one Fred also listed in the family who would have lived in Johnson County about the same time. Do you have some places and dates that we could check? Do you know when your grandfather was born? Anything would help. Thanks, Janet
I am researching the family of my ggrandmother Viola Burklow who married Harry A. McGinnis in Jackson Co., IL 1893. Viola and Harry McGinnis had 3 children: Harry (b. 1892), Roger (b. 1894 and Pat (b. 1897) McGinnis. Viola died about 1903-4. Viola's father was Andrew H. Burklow who married Emma Golliher in Jackson Co., IL 1871. Andrew and Emma Golliher Burklow had 2 children I have found: Viola and her brother A. H. (Harry) Burklow. A. H. Burklow married Emma McClary in Jackson Co., IL 1900. In 1910 A. H. and Emma Burklow lived in Poplar Bluff, MO and had two children: Alma and Joe. In 1951, A. H. Burklow was living in Los Angeles, CA. Emma Golliher Burklow married again before 1885 a man named Jones and had H.B. Jones, Grace Jones Brothers and Laurretta Jones Faust, the last two of whom lived in South Bend, IN.
Do you know of this family? I do not know the parents of Andrew H. Burklow.

David,
With the help of the names you gave me, I found James H. Vaughn married Sarah Jane Golliher in Jackson Co., IL 6/5/1869 and David Williams married Mary Golliher in Jackson Co., IL 11/01/1869. So the aunts you mention are probably Emma Golliher Burklow's sisters, not the sisters of her husband Andrew H. Burklow Sr. That would mean it was the Golliher grandfather that came from Tennessee. Of course I will have to get original records to comfirm.
Are you certain that the census you checked was Perry Co., MO and not Perry Co., IL? Both are very close to Jackson Co., IL.
I found Andrew H. Burklow and his wife Emma, both aged 30, in the 1910 Butler Co., MO census with children Alma age 9 born in IL and Joe age 7 born in MO. Andrew H. Burklow Jr. was the brother of Viola Burklow McGinnis, and I believe was the guardian of my grandfather, Roger McGinnis, whose mother Viola had died by 1905. Viola's husband Harry Adolphus McGinnis believed he was also dying and had Roger taken to the St. Louis Children's Home Society where he was adopted within a few months and never got back with his family. That is the reason I am trying to discover the families' histories.

Dave,
I have been wondering if the Harrison Burklow you say was hanged in Jackson Co in 1878 could be the A. H. Burklow I am looking for? A. H. Burklow had a son A. H. Jr. born 1878 who was called "Harry" (for Harrison?). A. H. Sr. disappears from my view about 1878 and his wife Emma remarries in 1880. But you say Harrison Burklow's widow was named Blaylock. Do you have more information about that story? Do you know the date more specifically, so I could look for newspaper or death records. I have to do everything by mail because I live 1000 miles from Jackson Co., so I can only look for specific stuff; I can't survey records like I would like to.
David,
Thanks for the copy of the story about Harrison Burklow's hanging. Not everyone gets such a fascinating story to investigate in their family history! I checked the Statewide Marriage Index for IL, and Nancy Blaylock was not the wife of Harrison Burklow, but of William R. Burklow. Harrison's wife was Martha Carns, and they married in Pulaski Co 1864. Your source before had said Nancy Blaylock was the widow of the hanged man. (I'm just trying to find enough information to acquit my poor gggrandfather of this crime!) Do you know where you got the information that Blaylock was the widow's name? This quote from Union Co History says 1877, but in your first note you said 1878. Do you have anything that gives a more specific date?
You have really helped me out with my research. I appreciate it so much. Hope I can help you too.
Joyce Morgan

Dave,
I have checked the Statewide Marriage Index 3 times, and written down what I'm seeing (my printer is broken and I'm not a computer athlete so it's back to pencil and paper). You always have to allow for creative spelling on that index, but this is what I get:

Harrison Burklow m. Martha Carns
11/18/1864 Pulaski Co

William R. Bunklow m. Nancy Blaylock
8/15/1872 Jackson Co

Unless they misspelled his name, that is the only marriage for Harrison Burklow. I'll go back and check for a William or Henry Harrison Burklow.. . .
Joyce Morgan

Subj: Re: Burklows in IL
Date: 3/18/01 12:44:53 PM Eastern Standard Time
From: Fred and Joyce
To: cloggingmommy@yahoo.com

Catherine,

I would need a little more information about years and places in order to know if your Burklows and mine are exactly the same. My Burklow family came to IL from KY about 1830. They settled mostly in the southern tip of IL: Pulaski and Johnson Counties. My grandfather's mother was Viola Burklow, who was born in 1872 to Andrew Harrison Burklow and Emma Golliher. A. H. Burklow was 38 when they married in 1871 and Emma was 14 or 15. A. H. usually signed his name A. H. but he was called Harrison. He was a Union Soldier from Pulaski Co, and after the war he was a law enforcement officer there. On July 5, 1878, Harrison Burklow was tried by a jury and hanged in Johnson Co, IL for murdering a neighbor. In December of 1878, Emma had a son she named Andrew Harrison Burklow Jr. That son had 2 children that I know of, Alma and Joe, who were born at the beginning of the 1900s. A. H. Jr. and Joe both died after 1950 in the San Francisco area. Viola Burklow married Harry Adolphus McGinnis and had 3 children I know of: Roger, my grandfather, Harry Jr. and Pat, all born in the 1890's.

Do you know the dates and places your Burklows lived?

Joyce Morgan
Your list didn't include my grandfather though. I have more info if you're interested. Let me know and I'll e-mail it to you.

Family history

I've recently begun to look into my family's history and unfortunately don't have many leads. My great-grandfather was James Oliver Burklow, and my grandfather was Oren Loree Burklow. All I know is they lived in South-eastern Missouri around 1900-1940. Any other leads on them of the history of the Burklow name would be appriciated.
