My Wife is the grandaughter of Bessie and Mack Miller. Bessie lived with them (Bessie's son Don) the last couple of months of her life. My wife would appreciate any information you have as her father did not tell her much about his side of the family. We do not have much information yet about Bessie's second husband (Ed Wells). We do know that they were married sometime between 1935 and 1942, most likely in Portland, Oregon and later moved to Newport, Oregon. We live in Oregon and have just started to research the Miller and Burleigh side of the family.

Elizabeth Wright-Richards
Wright, Richards, Burleigh, Ticonderoga and Utica, NY.

It has come to my attention that Elizabeth Wright of Putnam, of Washington County, NY married a John Richards, 1830, at Johnsburg, NY.

They had three children:
Jane E. Richards b. 12 Sep 1838 at Utica, NY. d. 1 Sep 1899 and married H. G. Burleigh of Ticonderoga, NY. and Whitehall, NY. They had three Children:
H. G. Burleigh Jr., Charles, and James W.

Robert Richards: b. 1840

John Richards: b. 1842 d. 17 Jul 1860 at age 17. Killed by the fall of a tree. Buried at Putnam, NY next to Robert Wright, Grandfather.

Jane E. Burleigh’s obituary stated that she had moved with her family to Ticonderoga from Utica after her father died. She was twelve years old. This would be 1850 which is the
date that John Richards from Johnsburg died.

There are many Burleigh relatives that live in Ticonderoga area. They must be interested in this history. I would like
to set this record straight.

My John Richards of Johnsburg and Lake George, born 1765 and died 1850, was at Lake George in 1830 Census. In 1832, he
constructed a house on the Military fields of Fort George at Lake George where he is now buried. He was involved with
Susan Alden of Lake George until she died as his wife
in 1836. He became involved with her after her husband
David Alden died at Lake George in 1822.

How my John Richards could have been involved with Elizabeth Wright is very confusing.

I have a John Richards from the Barber Records that died
13 Aug 1846 at 42 years of age. He would have been born
1806. I do not have a record of where he was located.
This person would be more of an age and history as the husband of Elizabeth Wright.

I would like to clear up this matter. It didn’t work
30 years ago when I did my original research and I can
not see how it works now.

Any help with this research would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
JIM Richards

You posted your question quite some time ago but just in case here is what I have...

Mary Burleigh married Ephraim Small, they moved to Northwood NH in 1793. Ephraim died on Nov. 28, 1841. They had 7 children, William, Samuel, Moses, Josiah, John Nathaniel, Nancy, and Lydia. John married Mary Evans and had at least one son George. John, Mary and George are buried in Harvey Lake Cemetery in NH.

I have a fair amount on some of their descendants (I decend through daughter Sarah Frances; are you a decendant of this family also?), but nothing on James' ancestry.
Edward's grandmother, Elsie Marie Murray, was married to my g-g- uncle John Mateer Murray. Elsie's obituary only mentioned grandchildren, but no children. Family information indicates that John Murray did not have any children, but no one is sure of this. John Mateer Murray was born and raised in PA. Does your cousin have any information on Edward's parents? Please email me directly and if I have any information he can use, I'll gladly share. What does he know about Edward's parents and grandparents?

Giles Burleigh at Ipswich, Massachussets 1648

I am descended from Giles Burleigh (various spellings) who
was at Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1648. The line of descent
is presented in Cutter's Genealogy of Northern New York,
1910 as far as my grandfather Henry Gordon Burleigh III who
was born in 1903 at Ticonderoga, New York.. A transcription
of which is available at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hubbard/NNY_index/b...

I would like to trace the line farther back and would appreciate
any clues to where in England Giles came from and the
details of his emigration to Massachusetts. I would also like
to find out where he and his wife Elizabeth/Rebecca are
buried. I've been to several of the cemeterys in
Massachusets, New Hampshire and New York
where his descendants are buried. Any help would be
appreciated and I will be happy to share the materials I have
with anyone interested in this line.

Hope this helps,
Mike McDonald

I have no information on the individuals you mentioned. My Burley/Burleigh's came from England to Massachusetts, then to Maine and finally to Vermont (USA).

Since my original post (2001) I have found that Andrew and Helen Burley/Burleigh that are buried in the Maple Street Cemetery in Waterbury, Vermont (USA), are indeed related to my Burley/Burleigh's.

If you knew where Bennet served in the Civil War (what state) this may help you locate information on his Civil War service. If you know this and can find his unit information, you can send to the National Archives (in Washington, D.C) for information on him regarding his Civil War service.

I would suggest that you search for a message board relating to areas in Scotland and try posting a query there to see if anyone has any information on the people you seek.

Hello,

I am doing family tree research and am trying to make some connections.

Does anyone out there know anything about Phebe Ricker b. Abt. 1808, d. 1908 at age 100? She was married to John
Burleigh. They are buried in the Ricker Cemetery in Waterbury, Vermont. They may have been originally from Maine. I am trying to find out the names of their children.

There is a Helena S. Burley b. 12/21/1840, d. 8/11/1845 that is also buried in the Ricker Cemetery, don't know if she would be their daughter?

My ancestor, Haverhill Burley, was b. 1821 in Maine (do not know what county or town) and he died during the Civil War. He moved to and was married in Waterbury, Vermont. He is not buried in the Ricker Cemetery, but in another cemetery in Waterbury, VT.

I am trying to find out if Phebe Ricker and John Burleigh are Haverhill's parents. Haverhill may have had a brother/cousin named James A. Burleigh, b. 1827 Maine, died in Vermont, that was married to a Lucretia B. Lee, and they had a daughter, Eva May Burleigh, and a daughter Ida Belle Burleigh.

Any help or information would be wonderful!

Thank you.

The only family I have for my Elizabeth Burleigh is that she was born abt 1840 in NY (only one I've found was born in NJ) and she died 1884 in Valparaiso, IN. She married Nathaniel Weyant about 1865 in NY. They had children : Ada b. 1863, Francis b. 1865, Frederick b. 1868, Wiliam Dana b. 1870, Hadley b.1874, and Charles H. b 1877.

Nathaniel Weyant was the son of Townsend Weyant and Nancy Gellatt.

I finally found Eliza's husband after piecing together the family around Plattsburgh, NY. She became the second wife of Alexander Burleigh (1845-1909) and he the son of William Burleigh and Margaret Reddy. She married him about 1891 after the death of his 1st wife and essentially raised his children, William, Lawrence, Andrew, John, Stephen and Mary. Still trying to find out when she died and where she was buried.
The Eliza Burleigh in Vickie's response to my first post was an older sister to Alexander.

Miss Eva Grace Burleigh of Erie, PA, Harry T, Burleigh, composer 1893-94

As I think of St. Paul students, I think also of the scores of teachers and workers who from the beginning have planned and worked to make real an ideal that would not be suffocating or defeatist, but challenging and dynamic in the long-term point of view. I think of men and women like H. E. Barnett, a Howard University graduate, who came here from Warrenton, and from 1890-1893 assisted me in many wars; D.W. Brown of Charlotte Hall, Maryland, who from the turn of the century served in every capacity, save that of principal; Mrs. Mollie Wall, of Freeman, Virginia, and Mrs. Susan Roberts, the first matron, who labored night and day to make both ends meet; Mr. Jack Macklin, who saw St. Paul’s rise and knows the story of these parts better than any other living man; Miss Eva Grace Burleigh of Erie, Pennsylvania, sister of Harry T. Burleigh, the composer and soloist who, although here for only one year (1893-94), rendered invaluable service in establishing a music department; Miss Sallie Davis (now Mrs. Thoroughgood) of Norfolk, who taught several years and had much to do with laying a solid foundation for the school;

An excerpt from An Adventure in Faith By James S. Russell Founder of the St. Paul School in Lawrenceville,VA

Burleigh from Somerset or Herefordshire

I have a Charles Burleigh born about 1824. So far I have traced him back to the 1851 census living in Orcop, Herefordshire (I think can't quite read it) & this is where is spent his life owning a Postoffice (Ebenezer House) & marrying a Caroline Thomas.

According to the 1851 census he was born in Chepstow, Monmouthshire & on the 1871 he was born in Yatton, Somersetshire & on the 1881 (RG11 2597) he was born in Glatton, Somerset, the 1891 stats Yatton in Somerset again & so does the 1901. I know that there is a Yatton in Hereford & Somerset, but no Glatton - I think there is a Glatton in Cambridgeshire which strangely is where the family ended up in the 1930's.

I have not been able to trace anything on him before 1851, if anybody can look up anything that might help me solve where he was born, I would be very grateful.

Charles Burleigh

Can anyone help me find where Charles Burleigh was in 1861.
I have found him on the 1851 in Ross, Herefordshire with wife Caroline, and then again on the 1871 in Orcop, Herefordshire right through to 1901.

He was born c.1824 most census returns state he was born in Yatton, although the 1851 states Chepstow Monmouthshire.

He married Caroline 01 Sep 1843.

I believe that his mother was an Ester Burleigh born c.1875 - I have found her on the 1861 living in Chepstow.

If anybody could help where Charles & his wife might be that would be great help. I would guess that they would have at least 5 children with them:
William; Mary Ann; George; Louisa & Sarah.

Thank you in advance for any help.
Sadie
