Wright, Richards, Burleigh, Ticonderoga and Utica, NY.

It has once again come to my attention that Elizabeth Wright of Putnam, of Washington County, NY married a John Richards, 1830, at Johnsburg, NY.

They had three children:
Jane E. Richards b. 12 Sep 1838 at Utica, NY. d. 1 Sep 1899 and married H. G. Burleigh of Ticonderoga, NY. and Whitehall, NY. They had three Children:
H. G. Burleigh Jr., Charles, and James W.

Robert Richards: b. 1840

John Richards: b. 1842 d. 17 Jul 1860 at age 17. Killed by the fall of a tree. Buried at Putnam, NY next to Robert Wright, Grandfather.

Jane E. Burleigh’s obituary stated that she had moved with her family to Ticonderoga from Utica after her father died. She was twelve years old. This would be 1850 which is the
date that John Richards from Johnsburg died.

There are many Burleigh relatives that live in Ticonderoga area. They must be interested in this history. I would like
to set this record straight.

My John Richards of Johnsburg and Lake George, born 1765 and died 1850, was at Lake George in 1830 Census. In 1832, he
constructed a house on the Military fields of Fort George at Lake George where he is now buried. He was involved with
Susan Alden of Lake George until she died as his wife
in 1836. He became involved with her after her husband
David Alden died at Lake George in 1822.

How my John Richards could have been involved with Elizabeth Wright is very confusing.

I have a John Richards from the Barber Records that died
13 Aug 1846 at 42 years of age. He would have been born
1806. I do not have a record of where he was located.
This person would be more of an age and history as the husband of Elizabeth Wright.

I would like to clear up this matter. It didn’t work
30 years ago when I did my original research and I can
not see how it works now.

Any help with this research would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone help me find where Charles Burleigh was in 1861.
I have found him on the 1851 in Ross, Herefordshire with wife Caroline, and then again on the 1871 in Orcop, Herefordshire right through to 1901.

He was born c.1824 most census returns state he was born in Yatton, although the 1851 states Chepstow Monmouthshire.

He married Caroline 01 Sep 1843.

I believe that his mother was an Ester Burleigh born c.1875 - I have found her on the 1861 living in Chepstow.

If anybody could help where Charles & his wife might be that would be great help. I would guess that they would have at least 5 children with them:
William; Mary Ann; George; Louisa & Sarah.

Eliza Burleigh is found living on Peru St. in Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., NY USA in the 1920 census with a Nellie McQuillan. She probably died between 1920 and 1930 and I would like to find out when she died and where she is buried. She was Roman Catholic and was probably buried either in Plattsburgh or Au Sable. MILLINOCKET -- Viola S. (Burleigh) Downs, 94, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at Katahdin Nursing Home in Millinocket.

She was born June 18, 1911, in Masardis, the daughter of Henry and Maude (Caswell) Burleigh.

She was the wife of the late Lloyd L. Downs Sr. She was also predeceased by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Henry Downs and his wife, Louise, Harold Downs and his wife, Julie, and Lloyd L. "Buck" Downs Jr.; a daughter, Judy V. Barlow; a sister, Lily M. Frost; a brother, George Burleigh; two sons-in-law, Millage "Miles Bones" Kelly and Gerry Tucker; two grandsons, Roger D. Caswell and James "Jimbo" Downs.

Viola is survived by two sons, Gary Downs and his wife, Mary, of Plainsville, Vt., and Jack Downs and his wife, Mary, of Waterville; three daughters, Hester Caswell and her husband, Samuel, of Medway, Emily Kelly of Millinocket, and Charity Tucker of Fort Pierce, Fla.; 46 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, with a funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. at Giberson Funeral Home, 18 River St., Bingham, with the Rev. Douglas W. Drown officiating.

Interment will be in the Pierce Cemetery in Solon

I am descended from Giles Burleigh (various spellings) who
was at Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1648. The line of descent
is presented in Cutter's Genealogy of Northern New York,
1910 as far as my grandfather Henry Gordon Burleigh III who
was born in 1903 at Ticonderoga, New York.. A transcription

I would like to trace the line farther back and would appreciate
any clues to where in England Giles came from and the
details of his emigration to Massachusetts. I would also like
to find out where he and his wife Elizabeth/Rebecca are

Massachusets, New Hampshire and New York
where his descendants are buried. Any help would be
appreciated and I will be happy to share the materials I have
with anyone interested in this line.

Burleigh from Somerset or Herefordshire

I have a Charles Burleigh born about 1824. So far I have traced him back to the 1851 census living in Orcop, Herefordshire (I think can't quite read it) & this is where is spent his life owning a Postoffice (Ebenezer House) & marrying a Caroline Thomas.

According to the 1851 census he was born in Chepstow, Monmouthshire & on the 1871 he was born in Yatton, Somersetshire & on the 1881 (RG11 2597) he was born in Glatton, Somerset, the 1891 stats Yatton in Somerset again & so does the 1901. I know that there is a Yatton in Hereford & Somerset, but no Glatton - I think there is a Glatton in Cambridgeshire which strangely is where the family ended up in the 1930's.

I have not been able to trace anything on him before 1851, if anybody can look up anything that might help me solve where he was born, I would be very grateful.

She married first Mack M. Miller on October 27, 1909. She married ? Wells on ? She died June 1969 in Multnomah, OR. Does anyone have further information as to Mr. Wells or the burial place. Her mother was a sister to my grandmother. I have an old picture of Mack Miller, Bessie, and Alice.

Seeking any info on Michael Archie Burleigh est born 1876 in NH to Charles E. Burleigh and Mary Bean(born N. Ireland)married Marie Roseanna Reil of Dover, NH and had a daughter Mildred Johanna . Listed on the 1930 Cenus as living in Dover,NH married to Ida A (french candian Indian from Maine)and working as hotel chef. He is my grandmother's grandfather. My grandmother on my mother's side of the family was the daughter of John Burleigh and Abby (Abbie?) Eleanor Lobley (or Leobley) of Maine.
Anyone have an information about them? I have my grandfather's side of the family back to 1630, but haven't had much luck with my grandmother's family.
All I know are their names. I do have a couple photos of John & Abby, but know almost nothing about them.

In doing my research, I'm able to trace my lines: Burleigh (going back to Robert and Sarah Ellridge-England) and Stelly (going back to Christian Stehlin-Germany). I was surfing around doing research on my family tree, when I located a cemetery in Waterbury, Vermont, (The Maple Street Cemetery) that listed my relatives, Addie E. Burleigh, and her father, Haverhill S. Burley, and her mother, Chastina Towne.

But, there were two other listings, an Andrew H. Burleigh and a Helen Burleigh, which I can't identify. Does anyone have a connect to them? I'm thinking that they may all be related, and would like to know for sure, so I can put come pieces of the puzzle together.

I know that they had a son, Irving Nelson smith, born 1878, in Michigan.
Irving Nelson Smith came to Canada, and married a Mabel Smith, Sept.28, 1904 in Meaford, Ontario. Irving's occuption was a butcher.

I have recently been informed that my father was an American. This may sound a little suspicious. The facts as I understand them is that my mother is from Windsor, Canada. My father was apparently from some where in Michigan?

My parents had a difficult marriage and I was given up for adoption very young. I am interested in learning about my father and whether or not I am in fact a dual citizen.

My fathers name as I know it to be was Earl Joseph Burleigh he as apparently born Dec 2 1919. I am not sure where in Michigan?

Having been born in Canada myself, I have no idea where to begin looking for information? Can anyone help or perhaps advise me where to look?

I am doing family tree research and am trying to make some connections.

Does anyone out there know anything about Phebe Ricker b. Abt. 1808, d. 1908 at age 100? She was married to John
Burleigh. They are buried in the Ricker Cemetery in Waterbury, Vermont. They may have been originally from Maine. I am trying to find out the names of their children.

There is a Helena S. Burley b. 12/21/1840, d. 8/11/1845 that is also buried in the Ricker Cemetery, don't know if she would be their daughter?

My ancestor, Haverhill Burley, was b. 1821 in Maine (do not know what county or town) and he died during the Civil War. He moved to and was married in Waterbury, Vermont. He is not buried in the Ricker Cemetery, but in another cemetery in Waterbury, VT.

I am trying to find out if Phebe Ricker and John Burleigh are Haverhill's parents. Haverhill may have had a brother/cousin named James A. Burleigh, b. 1827 Maine, died in Vermont, that was married to a Lucretia B. Lee, and they had a daughter, Eva May Burleigh, and a daughter Ida Belle Burleigh.

Any help or information would be wonderful!

I just received a copy of my great grandfather's birth record and it says his mother was Addie E. Burleigh, born in Waterbury, Vermont. I would like to find out more information about her and her family, etc. All I know is that her husband's name was H.K. Smalley or A.K. Smalley. They had two children Dayton Burleigh Smalley, and possibly an Ivy Smalley.

I have a Wiggins family bible bought at auction in Maine that includes a marriage cert. for Freeman Wiggins and Sarah H. or C. or ? Burleigh. It lists Freeman as living in Lebanon, Me, and Sarah of Wakefield, NH, married 27 Feb 1961 plus witness names of Maranda Burleigh & ______ Burleigh, ____Taggart (Clergyman). The bible is from the 1880's and lists other names.

I'll be selling the bible, if anyone is interested. About 850 pages, lots of gold-leaf color and BW engravings, leather cover, broken back spine, metal fastenings.

I know he had a sister Marilyn, but I don't have much more than that. I believe he had another sister. I am sure they had children. He was dating a nurse and owned a bar with a local attorney at the time of his death. His attorney sent me a letter many years after his death and stated that his debts added up to the exact amount of $$ in his estate.
