Is his ancestry from the Hamilton Burleys or the Gippsland Burleys (unrelated families)?

My lot was from the Hamilton settlers. There were a lot of children. One was the founder of Burlei underwear, another the founder of Burley Footballs (my direct ancestor).

But I have a contact with a researcher of the other unrelated Burley's who has a huge family tree on genesreunited website

There appears to be two main unrelated? groups of Burleys in Victoria. My lot settled the Hamilton area and were a large family of 13 children. My Great grand uncle being the founder of Burlei underwear and my Great Grandfather being the founder of Burley Footballs.

There is another family of Burleys to which there is a chap I know in Victoria who has mapped a very extensive tree going back to the norman invasion, but I can not find the link if any to my lot.

Burley family - Wigan and Ireland

I am looking for information on John Burley(born c1806) who came from Ireland to St. Helens. Although I am not sure exactly when he came it was before 1840 (when he had his first son) He married Mary Cartwright (nee Armstrong) Mary had two children already. I am descended from his son also named John who moved and settled in Wigan.

I am particularly interested in whereabouts in Ireland he came from and any information generally.

Regards Berni

Dear Patiann:

William Rhyndress Burley was my father. My Grand parents names were Clayton Delbert Burley and my grand mother was Mary Burley (Born Rhyndress). At Birth my Grandmother's mom Mary Rhyndress (Born Whelan) died in childbirth. Mary Rhyndress's daughter Mary, her brother William and her sister Cassie were raised by Mary Whelan's mom. I do not know my great,great grandmother Whalen's first name but she raised Mary Rhyndress under the name Polly Whelan. She did not legally change Mary's name to Polly so her legal name up to her marriage to Clayton Delbert remained Mary Rhyndress. My dad William Rhyndress Burley had 3 sisters and 6 brothers. All have passed on except for the youngest daughter Betty Doggeral who lives in Scarborough Ontario. William R. my dad passed away on August 25, 2003 at age 91.

Hello James
My grandmother was Lilian Dorothy Burley (her mother was Georgina edge. LDBurleys father was a violent alcoholic and I believe Georgina- or family ran a florists that provided flowers for major london hotels, in Turnham green). I believe she had two brothers, one was 'Billy' who was shot down (over Belgium?)in the second world war (flew in a bomber). LD Burley Married Joseph Francis Augustine Holloway and they had two children Brian Anthony and Nita. I recall The watchmaking/ jewellers link and I'm sure my cousins (Nita's Children) know more about exactly where the Jewellers shop. I think think that LDBurleys brother you mentioned was a pharmacist. I can be more certain of these facts with my notes.Lastly I believe LD Burley was born 1904, not 1908.

Hello, Sorry its taken me so long to find your message. This ancestry cite has been rather cumbersome to get around. I have heard stories about your side of the family through my deceased grandfather. It was so interesting. My sons have their share of musical talent also. I have one son that is going to college in a few years that will be a music major. He's a percussionist. I also took piano lessons but didn't get as far as I would have liked due to a major illness in high school. Now I'm back in college again! I'd love to hear from you. If you need any family data, I may be able to help. I've been trying to as far back on the Smith side as possible. I'm not sure when they originally came over to this country.The earliest I have is of James and Sally born circa 1819. They lived in Russell, NY. Their children were Helen and Martin James.
I have a few Burley's in my tree starting with Stephen Burley in England, whose son Henry George Burley (1825 - 1900), Husband of Maria, (September 28, 1825 Kent, England - January 23, 1900 in Victoria, Australia)
I believe other cousins, siblings, or nephews might of come out to Australia later. [possibly Charles is one of these]

He had at least 12 offspring from 1845 on.
Of those, they had just as big family's.
One of his Grandchild [my great grandfather] started Burley Footballs, another Two of his Grandchildren [Fred & Frank] started Berlei underwear.

Many descendants throughout Australia and New Zealand. some even returned to England.

I don't know all of them as yet, but feel free to search my tree:
http://www.geni.com/share?t=6000000000572397213

Regards
Peter Davidson
petedavo@iinet.net.au

Hello Silburley? My name is Rocky Burley. William David Burley is my grandfather. I live in California and my father Lorenzo Burley is originally from California but now lives in South Dakota. I honestly have no information on my Grandfather but if you have any I would love to hear about it. I don't know much about my fathers parents and or much of that side of the family. If William Burley is your father then you must be my aunt! Nice to meet you! I live in San Francisco, I'm 30 years old with no kids yet... Well, that should do for now... I would however like to know if you know what our ethnicity is on the Burley side... By the way I did see a picture of him once that my father has and he was on a navy ship, and my dad said that he died on a motorcycle in California.

I'm just mostly curious about our ethnicity, I never get a straight answer because I'm not sure if it's really known! I am actually also curious about my family, who the heck are you??? The only Burley's that I know are my brother and dad... My dad doesn't talk about family much but I'm curious!

Thanks,
Rocky

My Burley family are reputed to have come from England orignally. Certainly prior to 1624 there were no records with Scotlands People of any Burleys in Scotland. To make matters more complicated for you, probably half of the Burley males were named John or Johne. Very hard to help you with any attachments. If you give me an email address I will send you a descendant chart of my family and I can also supply you with sources if you need them.
THE BURLEYS OF SCOTLAND

My great grandmother was Margaret Burley (b 1835). I am directly descended from Johne Burley (b 1624). I have the full Burley family history for Scotland back to Johne Burley, who was purported to have been born in Dunfermline, near Edinburgh. But even though Scotlands People records go back to 1553 I have suddenly hit a brickwall at 1624. The last Scotlands People entry for any of the Burleys was Johne Burley's marriage to Christian Culross in 1646. I know that the Burleys weren't of Scottish descent and that they originated in England. There a lot of possibilities that I have found but they all seem to end in the late 1400s. Is there anyone out there that has Burleys from the late 1400s to the early 1600s?

Thank you, Terry Allen (aussieterry@gmail.com)

John Burley emigration to Ohio

I've been trying to nail down which John moved from PA to OH in 1815. After analyzing the data I have and all the census records I've come to an impasse.

In 1800 census John Burley III in Bucks County is listed with;
Males;
1 < 10 years old
1 10-15 years old
1 45+
Females;
1 <10
4 10-15
1 45 +
This matches perfectly with the ages of John III’s children at that time.

However, at this time there is also a John Burley in Greene County with;
Males;
1 <10
1 16-25
1 26-44
Females;
3 <10
1 10-15
1 16-25
1 26-44

Clearly two different families. The Greene County John and wife are younger, being less than 45.

In 1810 they are both gone from those counties. There is a John Byrley listed in Warwick Township, Bucks County, PA in 1810. That is right next to Newtown. The ages of the children on this sheet match the ages of the 1800 children +10 years, so he could be my John III with the name misspelled. There is J Burley in Tyrone, Huntington County, PA with children of ages that could be the Greene County family but there is no way to know for sure.

1830 census of Harrison.
Males;    John
<5
To 10
To 15     1
To 20
To 30     1
To 40
To 50
To 60
To 70     1

Females;    John
<5
To 10
To 15
To 20
To 30        1
To 40
To 50
To 60
To 70        1

So in 1830 husband and wife are both in their sixties. The Bucks County Burley’s were both over 45 in 1800. That would put them over 75 in 1830. The Greene County Burley’s were under 45 (both 32 according to current thinking), so being in their sixties 30 years later is probable.

The evidence for Bucks County;
John III married Johanna Larzelere in Bucks County according to LDS IGI.
Their son John IV was born in Bucks County. (However LDS also has John Burley born 30 Sep 1799 in Greene County parents John and Hannah.)

The evidence for Greene County:
Larzalere was born in Greene County according to the book "History of Perry County".
The ages of John and wife are in line.

If the LDS info is correct the only thing linking John of OH to John of Bucks County is the marriage record. This comes from the Larzalere family. If true it should be in the church records for Newtown Presbyterian which is the source for a lot of info on the Burleys. I'm going to try and check that. Perhaps the marriage in Bucks listed on LDS is wrong (it only states the wife as "Lazlier").

I'd appreciate any input especially from the Larzalere family.

November 18, 1809. Proved January 28, 1812. Dau. Phebe Burley and son-in-law John Slack exrs. Sons John, Joshua and David. Daus. Hannah, Elizabeth, Rachel, Jane, Phebe, Sarah and Mary. Dau. Hannah's son Absalom Burley. Wits: Sarah C. Linton, Is. Beverly has two adult children and twin granddaughters. Lois Burley Horn lives in Beaufort, South Carolina and is in declining health. Her husband, Al Horn died tragically a few years ago.

I don't know if any of the above information will be helpful to you.
