Reorg. Church of Latter Day St. Sacramento CA 1890s-1960

Trying to locate info. about the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints in Sacramento, CA located on 24th and J streets. My great grandfather, John Reed Cook, was a minister there in the l890s. His 1895 death certificate lists his occupation as "minister". His wife's (Emma Jane Cook) obit in 1955 mentions this fact and family lore has it that she left her property to the Church. The Church was at that location up to the 1990s but is gone. Wikipedia says the RLDS is now part of the Community of Christ. Any comments or suggestions? I'm hoping the Church will have archives about my family.

Here are my suggestions then:

Who she was: find obituary, search for newspaper articles, search for any articles or yearbooks from known organizations or schools, speak to living friends (doubtful they're alive) and family (you're already trying that)

Where she lived: find city directories, telephone books, voter lists, and property records.

Locate living grandchildren: If you don't know who they are then you'll need her obituary, or probate records/will (not sure whether that's public or not.)

Locate son: Try public records (brbpub.com is a free site)and various online "people searching" sites. Do you know his birth date? Several databases allow searche by birth date, but I can't post them here. Also search the Social Security Death Index.

Parents' ancestry: Did her father's death certificate indicate where he was born? or his parents' names? Have you found her parents in any censuses?

The CA death index shows her mother's maiden name as Glew.

I'm guessing you have all the census info which is easy to find. In 1900 she is in Sacramento with her widowed mother Nellie Burlington 42 England birth info May 1858, she is a housekeeper in a home, arrival year unknown.

In 1910 Nellie is rewed to Martin Moulton 58 Eng arrival year hard to read, maybe 1888,and Lillian is listed as stepdaughter.

In the pre-1905 death records in Sacramento there is a Harry Burlington age 46 yrs 3 mos, died 7/18/1899, from England and married but no other details are given. He is a good candidate for Lillian's father, but you should order her birth record to be sure, or another option is to contact your local Family History Center to see if they have records you can view.

I'm not related.

I just found your post of April 2007 and found it very interesting. Nettie Lena "Dollie" Burch was the sister of my great grandfather, Charles Preston Burch. Yes, the family of Burlington moved to Eugene, Oregon. As a little girl I spent time in Eugene visiting relatives - my grandmother, Pauline Rachel Burch, daughter of Charles and Sarah Zimmerman Burch. The Burchs have another connection to the Burlingtons. John and Carrie had a daughter, Effie Pearl, who married John William Burch. He was a brother to Nettie and Charles. I'd really enjoy hearing from you! Sharon

Probably was one of my Grandfather's brothers. William Albert and Nettie Lena Burch's children were John W, Raymond A, Ella M (Ellamay or Ella May), Gladys C, Orville Lee, Dorothy, Vera, Ruth, Mildred. There may be some errors in this list, some of it is hearsay.

Dorothy is still alive in Nebraska, as is my grandmother who was married to Orville, and I can email you if want more info.

My understanding is that they moved to Eugene Oregon area with all, or almost all, of thier kids, who were (all or mostly) born in Nebraska.

You can find William and Nettie in 1930 and 1920 Census.

William's parents are John W and Carrie Sarah (Krause or Krouse) Burlington. Nettie's parents are John Burch and Rachel Ellen (or Ellon) McMillen. All four born in Illinois! I have more but it should all be in OneWorld Tree by now. Feel free to email me.

One record shows his middle name starting with a "J" and another with no middle name.

Do you know where your John Burlington was born? There were a lot of childern and they were not very creative with names, so I don't know how they fanned out.

They had 4 children: Charlotte; William; Isabella; and John. They came to America and settled in St. Joseph, MO. Charlotte m. Coventry Archibald.

Jeff, my name is Bruce Burlington, and I live in Minneapolis, although our family is from California and, prior to that, from Michigan. My father's name was Paul F, and his father was Floyd, all of the Marcellus area in SW Michigan. In due course, I can send you a copy of the tree from FamilyTree Maker. It is not yet extensive on the Burlington side but there are few enough of us that we ought to be able to piece the thing together.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Bruce Harvey Burlington
John Burlington

I am from the Burlington's that settled in St. Joseph MO. in the late 1860's. They imigrated from Ireland via Scotland. John Isabel Burlington came over with 5 children, James, Nellie, John, Isabella, Margaret(she was possibly born in MO?). Of those children my family is from James. I don't know what happened to John other than he died in 1903 and if he had any children. However James had 5 children, Dan, James, Williams, Bessie, Earl (my family is from Earl).
Here is my thought in regards to what you are looking for. In 1915 Dan would have been 27 years old James 25, William 22, all of child bearing age. One of them could have easly been the father of John Burlington. Although they were all born in St. Joseph only Dan Earl stayed, or at least died there. James died in Des Moines IA., AND William dies in Lincoln, NE. Considering the somewhat rare surname this might be a good start. I will check with other family members. Please email at kburling@san.rr.com.

Hello Diana - If you still check this message board (3 years later than posted) it is very nice to meet you. Although I may not be any relation the the Burlington's, I believe my ggg grandmother was born in Corby about 1805. I am afraid I only know her first name. It was Elizabeth. She married John Ward(e).

Lisa

Hi,
Saw your message re Burlington, I have a Burlington on our tree, all I know of him was that he was WILFRED BURLINGTON, and that he married a lady called Maisie Lawrence, who was born 1908 in the Portsmouth area and died 1985 in London area. They apparently had no children.
Rather vague I know, but if anyone has a spare Wilfred, I would appreciate hearing from them, directly at frankandlaurie@aumarire.co.nz
Laurie Rands

The Burlingtons that settled in St Joe, Mo in late 1860 imigrated from Ireland and Scotland. They were LDS heading for Utah. John Isabel Burlington came over with 5 childeren - James, Nellie, John, Isahelle. John died in1903. James had 5 children - Dan, James, William, Bessie and Earl. Dan Burlington (b. 8-8-1909 in Ireland married Isabella on 12-27-1827. They had 7 children - James, John, Ann, Joseph, Daniel Maddemn, Sarah and William. Daniel Madden Burlington married Catherine Good in Scotland. They had 4 childeren - Charlotte, William, Isabella and John. They came to America and settled in St Joseph. Charlotte married Coventry Archibald. Also, Gibson Carter who married Sarah Burlington had a brother Jeptha Plasters Carter who married Marybelle Clark. This is the "Jeff" that was a mystery, not Joseh. Their son was Leavitt Carter and he married Viola Anna Burlington. I think Matilda Plasters was the sister of Jeptha Plasters, hence the name Jeptha was a family name. The Plasters and Carters and Lemons seemed to marry quite a bit. Thomas Plaster married Mary Carter. He would have been the Grandfather of Matilda. I think her fathers name was Isaac Plaster. One of Thomas Plasters sons was named Lemon Plaster. Mary Carter was the daughter of Daniel Carter and Anne Lemon. This should keep you busy for a while. Let me know how it checks out.

I have a John J. Burlington in my family file, born 4 July 1860 in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1865, he came to America with his parents and three siblings, and the family settled in St. Joseph, Missouri, where they joined the Reorganized LDS. John's sister, Isabella (born 1864), was my great-grandmother.

If you think there is a connection, I have quite a bit of information on this family and its ancestry and hope to have more soon.
Hello Cousin!

John Burlington, born 3 October 1828 in Kilrea, Londonderry, Ireland, married Isabella Butler (born 1 December 1832 in Glasgow, Scotland) in about 1852 in Glasgow. They came to America in 1865, expressly to join the LDS in Salt Lake City. They were accompanied by their first four children, James (born 1854), Eleanor (1858), John J. (1860), and Isabella (1864). Their fifth child, Margaret, was born in Missouri in 1866.

Daughter Isabella was my great-grandmother. She married Robert Price Jackson in 1884 in St. Joseph.

I have not yet fully researched this branch of my family, but I can add a few generations for you, and I also have a copy of the obituary of John Burlington (1828-1892), which tells the interesting story of his religious quest.

I'd love to share information about our respective branches. I can be contacted at robert@sophocles.com.

Incidentally, James descends from John Burlington (1828-1892), who was my GGgrandfather.
Thanks so much for your reply. I am racking my brain to remember any info from my father before his senile dementia replaced his memory. I think John Burlington fought in WWI and then settled in Iowa. He may have had other children there, one of whom might have been named Paul. I vaguely remember a half-brother of my father's showing up when I was a young child. I'm afraid my father wasn't very interested and I don't recall any further contact. Any further info you come across would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

My father, Frank Schuske, was the child of John Burlington and the adopted daughter of the Schuske's. Her name was possibly Anna and her birth parents were Margaret and Michael Costello. Anna and John might have run away and got married right before WWI. The only photo I have of John Burlington shows him in uniform. My father was born in 1915 in St. Joseph, MO, and was also adopted by the Schuske's. I had thought that John Burlington was from Iowa, but may be wrong. Any further information on John Burlington or if anyone is aware of my father's ancestry, please let me know.
