Matt and Wyley Burnes - brothers of the 1800's Tennessee

I am the great granddaughter of Matt. I can not find anything on them or their patents. I did find Matt under the name Madison Bermes and I know it is him by the wife and kids names - last name just misread I quess. Family stories say he was married to Eva Neisler, but remarried after her death and buried with that wife in Obion County Tennessee. All of his children - including, John Millard Burnes, my grandfather - was born in Obion County Tennessee in 1900

I know that Wyley was his brother, that Wyley hand-carved the Bible Cane that is a family heirloom and was written up in a Memphis newspaper once. Can't find the article in archives but have scraps of it at home.

I do not know anything else about them, they could have come from anywhere. I understand from old stories that the family had a habit of wandering in the summer and settling down with jobs (sort of) in the winter.

Any info would be appreciated, can also contact me a catpaw0918@comcast.net. Thank You.

Hello - I am looking for information regarding two sources called, "Burnes and Other Related Families" and "Burnes and Related Kin." I've found these two listed as sources for my family - the Loudons and McIntires - and would like to find the author. I would especially like to know if there are copies of these two publications available. The information they contain could quite possibly break down some very old brick walls in my family :-) Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you - Sue Graham sug53@earthlink.net

Ransom had a brother named Silas, and there were 2 or 3 others. I am still researching this family for my step mom. She is the daughter of Ransom Burnes and Hazel Frost. Any information you have on this family is greatly appreciated.

Hi from Boston. I really am not replying about the Byrnes surname, but mine. Since you've been digging in Moore Parish, as am I, wondering if you've seen any surnames GUINAN? It's a small parish, with terrible records, but my grandfather was born in Coreen in l882 and my gr grandparents, William Guinan and Catherine Downey were married in St. Mary's Church, Ballydangan, not far from there. I was able to obtain their marriage certificate, as well as my grandfather's birth certificate. I visited there a few years back without too much time to do any research. If this area all considered part of Athlone?

Have you come across GUINAN in your digging? I'll take a look at some of my old notes to see if I see Burnes. If I do, I'll let you know. Thanks. Dottie Guinan (dotpat@comcast.net)

I am sure that John Edward, later called Jessie Edward, was married to a Burtha Burnes and divorced her before the turn of the century. He married my ggm December 19, 1898 in Grundy County TN. He worked at the logging camps and my father was born in on of those camps. The tents had rough decking and was said to house many rattlesnakes. I did a small exploration about Burtha but found nothing that I could run with.
Please explain your thinking on the relationship between John J and John Edward. Also do you have documentation that Andrew Jackson was John J's father and Joel was the father of Andrew? Thank you for your kind response.
Ron

I really can't help you with your search, but like you, I am also looking for a James and Martha (?) Burnes (b. 1813--17). Who according to one census came out of NC, another PA, and another OH. I would like to know if in your search you might have ran across these names. Their son born in 1850 migrated to IL. Thanks, RHS

Re: Burtha Burnes married John Edward Smith in Stewart Co. TN abt. 1900

Sorry not to have answered sooner; we had an e-mail problem.
Well, I can see at once that my Alma Burns/Ed Smith marriage couldn't be your Burtha Burnes/John Edward Smith marriage from the dates. That's a little disappointing. Alma has been hard to track.
As to the John Edward/John J Smith connection, I had formed the impression from on-line postings and family trees that someone had established that John J and John the eldest son of Andrew Jackson Smith Sr (1835-1916) were the same person. What I can tell you in brief of the family of Andrew Jackson (Jack) Smith Sr. is:
He was born in Montgomery Co TN in 1835 (1899 application for Confederate Pension; deposition by Jack himself)
He is in the 1850 census of Montgomery Co. in household #999:
James Smith Jr. 47 Farmer TN
Mary Smith 47 TN
John Smith 22 Farmer TN
Andrew J Smith 14 Tn
Mary Smith 12 TN
Susanna Smith 8 TN
Joseph Smith 6 TN
James M Smith 3 TN
Another household has a Jackson Smith, 16, but James and Mary move to Stewart County when Jack does and live next to him with the 2 children from Jack's 1st marriage. Because of this, I believe James Smith Jr.is Jack's father.(James JR is in Montgomery County as early as 1820 when there is a James, Sr. and a James, Jr. listed in the census) Whether James Jr's wife Mary is Jack's mother could be a little more questionable. There is an 1845 Montgomery Co marriage for a James Smith and a Mary Jackson and at least one more 1850 household headed by a James and Mary Smith.
From conversations in 1979 with my great-aunt Irene Smith Allison (1912-2003),Jack's granddaughter and a woman with an encyclopedic memory:
Jack had 3 wives and counting some who died in infancy, 21 children.
The 1st wife was an Oldham, the 2nd a Nash and the 3rd was Ireetha Ann Ethridge.
The children from the 1st wife were a son John, who married Susan Ethridge, and a daughter Elizabeth. One of John's grandsons, Gilbert Smith, was then living at Tennessee Ridge TN.
From the 2nd marriage she remembered a son Joseph and some other sons. Joseph's wife was called Frankie and they had 2 sons and 2 daughters, one of the sons being deaf.
There were at least 13 children from the 3rd marriage. She named them, who they married, and the names of their children.I won't include all that here to save time and space.
I have been able to verify all this information from marriage and census records.
To fill in some of the gaps from the above information:
Jack married 1st wife Elizabeth Oldham in 1853 in Montgomery Co. She was born about 1840, daughter of Elisha and Matilda Vaughn Oldham. Their children: John, 1859-1912, and Elizabeth, b. 1856.
Jack married 2nd wife Agnes Elizabeth Nash in Stewart Co 3-1-1859. She was the daughter of Joseph and Tempy Nash. Their Children: Joseph, b. 1860, William, b. 1862, and Fredrick, b. 1863.
Jack married 3rd wife Ireetha Ann Ethridge (1850-92) 9-30-1865 in Stewart Co. She was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Dunnaway Ethridge. Their children: Thomas, Andrew Jackson, JR., Nancy, Louisa, Missouri, Cora, Maude, Ella, Bell, Josephine, Etta and Reethy.
I'd be interested to know if this fits or conflicts with your information. Also, please let me know any questions or comments on any of the above.

I hope this reaches you as I see you haven't posted in a while. I am a g-granddaughter of Andrew Jackson Smith, Jr., half brother to John Edward Smith's father, John J. (We have exchanged information previously on this forum.)
Can you tell me if the Burtha Burnes who was John Edward Smith's 1st wife was divorced from him or died? If the former is the case, I believe she was probably my g-grandfather Jefferson Brown Burns' sister Alma Burns whose 1st husband was listed as Ed Burns in their marriage record (Dec. 3, 1899 Houston Co Tn).
I have little information on Alma (I'm guessing her middle name might have been Bertha)
She was married for at least the last 30 years of his life ot Otis C Connor. She died in Pike Co Ill in April 1968 and Otis died in July 1966, also in Pike Co Ill.
Alma had no children, as far as I have been able to learn.
I also have pictures of her, if that will help solve the question.
Hope to hear from you.
Vickie
