Nice to hear from you Leann..I have done a ton of research on Sealine. Her proper name was Louise Celina Hudspeth of Humphreys County Tenn. Her nickname was Sealine. I have a picture of her. She had a club foot (right foot) and she NEVER went anywhere without a cup of coffee. She died in 1944. Apparently when Marcus died, there was a falling out between Sealine and the Burns family over the land she had with Marcus. However, my grandfather Joseph Wayne Horton remained friends with the Burns family for many many years after. Joseph Wayne Horton married Sealine's daughter from her first marriage to Noah Ethridge. Her name was Ida Ethridge.

I am currently working on Sealine back to Humphreys County Tenn but it is difficult, as her name has been used in many different ways, L.C. Hudspeth, Louise, Celine, Celina and Sealine. I did find her marriage certificate for Dec 10th, 1884 in Humphreys County to her first husband Noah ethridge.

According to the older members of our family, Ida Etheridge was either 1/2 or 1/4 Cherokee which means Sealine was full or 1/2. Do you have any info on that?

Which one of Marcus Burns' children is your grandparent? Are you living in Arkansas?

Thanks,
Lee Horton

Hi Ralph,
My GG Grandmother was Louise Celina "Sealine" Hudspeth Burns. She was married to Marcus D. Burns in Johnson Clay Co Arkansas. i believe Marcus died around 1910 and Sealine ived until around 1945. I think Sealine was Marcus' second wife. They had one child together whom I think was named Willie. Sealine already had two children of her own, Ida and Walter Etheridge from her previous marriage. Ida was my G Grandmother. Does any of this sound familiar?
Lee Horton

Sorry. I wasn’t able to find much. :(

1911 is the latest that you could find them: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Hill...

1921 was during the war for independence, so no census was taken in Ireland

1931 has not been published

Their parish was Killererin, so you would look up Killererin’s or Tuam’s Church records to see if you could find any baptisms, marriages etc for your family. (Parochial registers of Killererin, 1851-1900 has been microfiched by the LDS: http://www.londonfhc.org/content/catalogue?p=Ireland,Ireland...)

Databases you can try: http://galwaywest.brsgenealogy.com/ and/ or http://www.irish-roots.ie/galway-east.asp
Hi,
My ancestor is Agnes Ada Hand (nee Borger) born 1867 at Macleay River. Agnes is the daughter of Phillip and Frances Borger (nee Chapman).

My mum and I are just beginning our research into this side of the family. We are interested in connecting the dots between Francis and the surname Byrnes/Burns.

Thanks,
Karen

May 1920 near Tuam, Co Galway, Ireland.

He married my grandmother, Winifred Mary Peebles, in Wolverhampton, England in April 1949.

He died in Wolverhampton on 4th May 1996.

His mother's maiden name was Margaret Ann Kelly, but I'm not sure where she was from (although I would presume it would be somewhere in Co Galway).

My grandmother was married first to this man, they lived in Dodge, Lee Co. GA or Lee Co. Dodge GA, they had the following children. William (Bill) b. abt 1916, Effie, b. abt 1911, and Annis Jean b. abt 1917. In 1920 Eula Goings is listed with her parents in Rome, Ga with a notation of divorced, although the family had thought for many years she was a widow. She was born in Hephzibah, GA so he may have been from around the Augusta, GA area and or Aiken in SC I was told he died abt. 1916 which may be true. I think he was married before he mar. my grandmother but I know nothing of any children or names. Can anyone researching this family help me locate this man? He may have been buried in Tifton, GA. Thank you. Debbie Yeary Squirtchat@comcast.net

Baby boy BURNS, 6 Feb 1911

Looking for any information someone may have on the birth parents of a baby boy given up for adoption after he was born 6 Feb 1911, presumedly in Pennsylvania. One or both of his birth parents had the surname Burns (he later made it his middle name). He was adopted by George and Florence Miller and named Donald Miller.

I am his great-granddaughter, and I am looking to piece together some missing information; I only found out he was adopted shortly before his death in 2001.

Obit: Suzanne (Burns) Simington (1943-2009)

Suzanne Ruth Simington, daughter of Robert Frances and Alma Nora (Nelson) Burns, was born June 9, 1943 in Richmond, California. In 1950 Suzanne and her family moved to Emmetsburg where she attended school. Following high school, Suzanne attended Beauty School in Mason City.

On September 21, 1963 Suzanne was united in marriage to Larry Dean Simington at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. To this union four children were born. They made their home in Spencer and Ruthven. Suzanne later moved to Emmetsburg to care for her mother.

Suzanne was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She always made everyone feel welcome in her home and was like a “second mom” to many of her children’s friends.

Suzanne loved the outdoors, and especially enjoyed Lost Island Lake. She was an avid reader, enjoyed sporting events and liked to watch the Food Network on TV. Suzanne was instrumental in getting the pet program established at the Emmetsburg Care Center. When she moved to the Care Center she took her dog, Skully and they now have a resident cat and dog for the residents to enjoy.

Suzanne died Sunday, September 20, 2009 at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 66. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry in 1977 and her parents.

She is survived by her children, Bob Simington of Ruthven, IA, Robin (Rod) Hanson of Marcus, IA, Lori Kunzman and her friend, Nick Logan of Greenville, IA and Becky (John) Moore of Spencer, IA: ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a brother, Bill (Carol) Burns of South Elgin, IL; and a sister, Almalea Allen of south Elgin, IL; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Private Family Graveside Service
Crown Hill Cemetery
Ruthven, Iowa
Saturday, September 26, 2009
I've just read your Burns/Moriarty emails on the Ancestry message Board. I am a descendant of Roger and Johanna Burns/Byrnes who lived in Glanlough Upper. Roger is listed in Griffiths but must have died by 1858. Roger and Johanna had four children who came to the US in 1847, Daniel, John, Timothy and Mary on whom I have much information. Do you know of the Roger Burns family and/or how he is related to the other Burns in Gortdromagh and the surrounding townlands? Please respond to me here or at court.storey@northmarq.com.
Regards, Courtney Storey

This is really interesting.

The Robert Burns you mentioned was born around the same time as our Robert Burns who was in Kings County in 1891.

He was married to Alice Koch (spelled Cook in the census) and living with her family during the 1891 Census. According to family legend he went down with his ship.

The only thing preventing me from saying that this is definitely him is that he is 26 in 1891 putting his date of birth at 1865 - 1866.

I'm still researching this, but I was hoping that this would be helpful to you.

DB,

I believe that the mother (Ellen) of the Burns family in the 1850 census of Shelby Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, that you cite is Eleanor Jordan, daughter of
my 3rd-great grandparents, William Jordan and Blanche Fullerton. Eleanor Jordan married John Burns on January 25, 1816 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia. The Jordans moved from West Virginia to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, in the autumn of 1827; the Burns may have accompanied them or followed soon after, given the birthplaces of the Burns children in the 1850 census. While most of Eleanor's brothers and sisters stayed in Indiana, John, Eleanor and some of their children (not all) moved to Polk County, Missouri, and were living there in 1854 near Eleanor’s sister Margaret, who was married to Dr. William Coon. John and Eleanor can be found in the 1860 and 1870 censuses of Polk County.

I've found several references to the Burns in Tippecanoe County and neighboring Jasper County, Indiana, but I can't find them in Polk County, Missouri, after the 1870 census. Can you help? I'd really like to find their death info and gravesites. In return, I can provide a lot of information on Eleanor's family and Jordan ancestors.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Jerry Jordan
Queenstown, Maryland

DB,

Wow! What a lot of information. I’m looking forward to digesting it all and following the links you’ve provided. Thanks so much; and it’s great to hear from you!

I’ve been researching the Jordans of West Virginia and Indiana for many years, but didn’t know that Eleanor was related until last week, when I came across a law book giving her name in a lawsuit and describing her as a daughter of William Jordan and sister of Margaret Coon and Mary Murphy. That reference, which proves her relationship to my Jordans, can be found on-line at http://books.google.com/books?id=wQ88AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA517&a... .

I had earlier thought the Jordans might be related to a Burns family because of references in other works, including the following:

- Benjamin Burns (son of John and Eleanor) and Joseph Jordan (grandson of William through his son John Jordan) went into the grocery business together in Remington, Indiana, in 1862 under the name “Burns and Jordan,” according to History of the Town of Remington and Vicinity by James H. Royalty.

- In a letter dated April 9, 1854, from Polk County, Missouri, Dr. William Coon wrote to my g-g-grandfather William (son of William Jordan), “Mr. Burns and family are all well and well satisfied. William Burns and Jasper are going to California this spring with a Mr. Acock.” I originally thought Coon was writing about his own son, Jasper Coon, who was only about 3 years old at the time, but now I think he may have been referring to a Jasper Burns.

I’ve put much of what I know about my Jordan family on line at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jerryjorda... . Enter the site, then click on “William” in the menu at the left to get to Eleanor’s parents and their children. You’ll notice that Eleanor isn’t included since I didn’t have proof of her connection until just recently, but I’ll be adding her family as soon as I can.

Thanks for the link to the land records. There are several listed there for William Jordan and his sons.

You can contact me directly at JordanFamilyResearch@yahoo.com . I look forward to exchanging more family info with you.

Jerry Jordan
Queenstown, Maryland

Is Burns her maiden name? There is a Cordelia Adams married to Reason Burns in Marion County, Mississippi in the 1830's.
On Feb 4, 1836, John Adams deeds to children..Cordelia Burns.... Her marriage to Reason Burns is recorded at the Marion Co. Courthouse but I did not record the date as this is not my line. I do have the names of the other children listed in the John Adams deed if names help. Other children were: Winna Jackson, Anna Gibson, Annas Jones, Anderson Adams, and Hester Adams. Marriages for some of the girls are at the courthouse.

Jerry,
Thank you for contacting me and posting. Your people are definitely the same as my people. I'm excited to have broken through this brick wall thanks to you. Please be sure to check the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and search the Indiana land patents for William Jordan and John Burns/Burnes. There are maps on that website as well so you can see where their patents in Indiana were located.

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/

Also, Elizabeth/Betsy Burns (my gg-grandmother), daughter of John Burns and Eleanor Jordan, married Zimri Stubbs on 20 Aug 1851. Their marriage license was one of the earliest recorded in Tippicanoe Co., Indiana--I got a copy their marriage record. Zimri was the son of John C. Stubbs and Rhoda Whitcomb. The Stubbs family were of Quaker roots and descended from early Quaker immigrants Thomas Stubbs who was married to Mary Minor. The Stubbs family migrated South from Pennsylvania to North Carolina and Georgia before moving west. Zimri Stubss was a gg-grandson of Thomas Stubbs. Zimri's wife, Elizabeth Burns Stubbs (dau. of John Burns & Eleanor Jordan), died in childbirth in March 1860 in Americus, Breckenridge/now Lyon Co., Kansas. She is found in the 1860 mortality index for Americus, Breckenridge Co., Kansas. She left behind 3 daughters ages 2-5: Mary Ellen Stubbs, Cythia Jane Stubbs, and Rhoda Alice Stubbs. Zimri Stubbs remarried twice more and died intestate in Winfield,Cowley Co., Kansas. I should mention that Zimri's mother, Rhoda Whitcomb was a first cousin of Indiana Governor & U.S. Senator James Whitcomb. http://www.nga.org/portal/site/nga/menuitem.29fab9fb4add3730...

1860 Federal Census, Greene Twp., Polk Co., Missouri (Sentenel Prairie Post Office), enumerated 20 July 1860

Burns, John, 69, farmer, born in Virginia
Burns, Ellenor, 65, born in Virginia

Same page
Burns, Pallen or Patter [this is David P.], 41, farmer, born in Virginia
Burns, Eliza, 26, born in Tennessee
Burns, Martha, 17, born in Indiana (prob. One of the greatest crowds that ever assembled in Bolivar gathered for the celebration. We trust that our readers will cut the article out and save it for its historical value.--Ed. Herald, July 28th, 1937)

HISTORICAL AND DESCRIPTIVE SKETCH OF POLK COUNTY
PREPARED FOR THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
ON THE FOURTH OF JULY, 1876
By A. C. LEMMON

Burns, 3, 5, 12, 13

GREENE TOWNSHIP Greene Township is located in the northeast corner of the county, length from east to west 10 miles, width from north to south 7 1/2 miles, containing 75 square miles; population in 1870- 1904, estimated in 1876 at 1,200. There are no towns or villages, but one retail store, two post offices, several churches and schoolhouses, no mills of manufactories. Sentinal Prairie is the best and wealthiest portion. The bottom lands on Lindsay creek are rich and well timbered. There are many indications of mineral deposits. Lead is supposed to exist in paying quantities and will doubtless be developed sometime in the near future. The hills and prairies furnish a fine pasture for live stock. This township was not so early settled as some of the others. B. L. Stephens, Joseph Inks, Jacob Ballinger, John and James Jump, John Howe, Samuel Rutherford, Brice Stewart, Leonard Richards, Derrit Barclay, Hugh Estes, Evan Stewart, Rev. Gallison and John Burns were among the first settlers. John Jump is the oldest citizen in the township is now eighty-four years of age. He was a soldier of the war of 1812 so were Evan Stewart and John Burns.

MILITARY Of the veterans of 1812, but few are now living in our midst. They have nearly all passed away. Of the living, we are able to name the following, all of whom have attained to advanced ages, to-wit: John Burns, Evan Stewart, John Jump, Allen Bridges, Rev. Jas. Kennon, Phillip Watkins, Mattias Chilton and Samuel Sherwood--numbering in all 8 pensioners. One of them, Hartwell Johnson died near Morrisville a few years since, in the 91st year of his age. For several years previous to his death his strength, memory and sight were greatly impaired. Alexander Blair and David Hunter died in 1874, which Henry Potts lived to witness the dawn of the Centennial year.

CONCLUSION Having now reached the conclusion of this historical and descriptive sketch we beg leave to state that the brief space of time allotted us for its preparation, together with the difficulty and delay in obtaining facts outside of official records have prevented the introduction of many events and occurrences that ought not to be omitted in a sketch of this character. Many of the incidents and circumstances herein recorded are taken from the recollection of the parties furnishing them, and as they cover a long period of time, they may not in all cases be substantially as the occurred, but in the main we think their correctness will not be disputed. In making personal reference we have not intentionally omitted and person whose name should have occurred in connection with the early settlement of the townships or county. We have in most instances given them as they were furnished by others. To the following gentlemen, we are under many obligations for the information furnished by them in reference to their respective localities, viz: Col. James M. Johnson, John E. Rains, and John Watson of Bolivar. Capt. J. W. Burns of Halfway, Geo. W. Williams of Humansville, Dr. A. C. Sloan of Walnut Grove, Henry Gardner of Pleasant Hope, James M. Zumwalt of Sentinal Prairie, Milton Brown of Jefferson Township, James Stockton and Silas Fox of Madison and W. H. King of Jackson, also to A. J. Hunter, circuit clerk, and A. J. Lower, Recorder, for statistics and historical facts gathered from the records in their offices, and we are especially indebted to James W. Rains, Esq. for his arduous labors in searching through and examining official records, and for other valuable assistance rendered in the preparation of the sketch.
********************************************************
Some other information:
For maps:
http://www.arphax.com/tippecanoe-in

There is a burial for a Gerard Burns with members of the Miller and Patten families on the page below.
