The title is actually "Burnside Biographical Dictionary". I tried several years back to obtain a copy with no luck, it is out of print. I did find it on Amazon.com, again it's listed as out of print with limited availability. Some research libraries will have it. I know the Geneaolgy Library in Independence, MO has it. Some old book shops may have it. I found it in the Library of Congress when I lived near Washington DC, I made myself a copy. You might try a inter library loan. I could answer any questions you might have refering to my copy.

Lou, I have an Alexander Hannah whose father was John. However do not have any daughters named Nellie. Is it possible that this was a nick name. Also the family I am referring to by the time frames you are talking was in Bath and Greenbrier county VA. It is highly possible they originated in Rockingham Co. VA. John and Alexander are probably family names pasted to several lines from a particular generation.

Re: John Burnsides

The John Burnsides who d. in 1809 -- his parents? Only thing certain is that there are no records. Nobody knows for sure, who his parents were, although there are speculations. The leading Burnside historian, Bertha Lewis Clark, said that his parents were Robert Burnside and Esther Mayes. Ms. Clark cited family traditions, but kept this a generality -- she never came to specifics. Ms. Clark also said that his brother was James and his sister was Rachel. However the James Byrnside family specifically denied a relationship to John. There is also circumstantial evidence that John and James were not brothers. As we try to go back into the 18th century, we often run into absolutely nothing. There were no records whatever. Many if not most people could not read or write. The royal government was interested only in collecting taxes and tithes, and in defending the king's realm.

I am seeking information on Nelly Burnside that married John Smith May, 1811 in Rockingham County, Va. They removed to Greene County, Ohio shortly after son Jonathan was born in 1814. Believe her father was John and he also moved to Greene County, also believe she had a brother Alexander. Does any one know anything about this family? Lou
