I am looking for information on Isaac Burroughs who married Sarah Ann Billings (Phillips) on 22 July 1869 in Clay County, Illinois. He is not listed with the family of Sarah Ann in the 1870 census in July, Sarah is using the her previous married name of Billings in the census. Sarah Ann was born Oct 7, 1829 in Kentucky. She died July 16, 1907 in Oskaloosa, Clay, Illinois.

Frances Jane Burroughs of Alabama

I'm on the trail of the Burroughs and McDonald's that lived in Tuscaloosa Alabama around the time of the 1850 Census.

On that census is listed the families
Isham B(erry) Burroughs
Thomas (James) McDonald
John McDonald

in that order. My GG grandmother was Frances Jane Burroughs(Burr, Burrows, Burris, etc) who married Thomas James McDonald on 14 March 1840 in Tuscaloosa County Alabama. Her daughter, born in Texas in 1856 was Narcissa McDonald. Another child of Thomas and Frances was Green Berry McDonald. I find the similarity of names alone between the Burroughs and McDonald families quite intriquing. The other part of the story is that Narcissa was 1/4 Cherokee. Frances was born 1825 in Georgia according to the 1850 Census and died by 1863. Thomas only appears again on the 1870 census for Bastrop County, Texas, with a Martha as his wife? with her children Katha, Elsi and Maria T.

I can't seem to find positive confirmation of Frances Burroughs McDonald's Family, nor that she may have been at least 1/2 Cherokee or some other Native American Tribe. We're right on top of the civil war years as this story unfolds and the Trail of Tears and other forced emigration of Native persons has already happened.

I wonder if anyone has ever heard any of this, or might have some corroborating information in your tree.

I wonder if Frances is some relative of Isham Berry Burroughs. The McDonald's both say they come from South Carolina as does Isham, yet Frances says she was born in Georgia.

Hello,

I'm actually trying to trace info on McDonalds of Alabama. Thomas James McD married Frances Jane Burroughs, b 1823 in Georgia. On the 1850 Census for Tuscalloosa County AL, an Isham B Burroughs is listed with the family of Thomas James McDonald ( and Frances). I'm just wondering if Frances Jane and Isham B were related. This Isham B Burroughs on the 1850 census I mentioned has a wife named "Caroline". Could this be the same Martha Catherine Williams you mention in your post? If so, I have another question. Frances Jane died around 1863, and Thomas James McDonald doesn't show up on another Census until 1870 in Bastrop County Texas with a woman named "Martha" who apparently was married before and has children Katha, Elsi, and Maria T, all born in Alabama. I'm wondering if there is a connection there as well.

Ah yes-- I see that now. The similarity in names is most confusing. I'll have to update my files-- I believe somehow my file tries to connect in with Jeremiah Burroughs, and none of us are sure of the connection with Old World Burroughs. You are right; there is a lot of conflicting/wrong information on the Internet about this family.

The Martin County NC family is not descended from the immigrant John BURROUGHS of Newtown NY. DNA testing of both families has shown this.

The Martin County NC family is very likely descended from the John BURROUGHS of very very early Jamestown VA. This is not definite, but many of the given names in early NC are the same as those of the VA family. Someday we will be able to prove this relationship when we find a DNA participant who can trace all the way back to Jamestown.

This is the line which I am researching as well, which leads to the Martin county, NC Burroughs and then becomes the Conway, SC Burroughs.
I see automatically some information with which my file does not agree.

I have John Burroughs the Emigre's second wife as Elizabeth PETTIT with Thomas PETTIT and Christian MELLOWES as parents.

Is there a book that contains info on this line of which anyone knows?

I don't know if you are still interested. According to my family history sheet Irene Williams parents were Joel Williams, born 18 Nov 1794 in Guilford Vt. Died 14 Nov 1878 in Derby, Vt. Irene's mother was Elmira Wilson, born 22 Mar 1800, Danville, Vt. Died 17 Aug 1876 Derby, Vt. They are buried at Derby Center Cemetery. Also buried there are Pluma (dau) age 21 22 Sep 1854 and Chester (son)1 Apr 1850 age 21. The family history sheet belonged to my husband's father (Derwood Elliott) who died in 1970. His mother was Faye Burroughs.

Fidelia Burroughs is my 3rd great-grandmother. Fidelia was born Feb 1827 in either Vermont or Ohio.

I am searching for the history and burial place of Fidelia Shields; and the truth about her marriages (see below.)

She married Simon Peter (S.P.) Benadom on 07 Apr 1844 in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA. She divorced or left or vice versa before 1865 in Jones County, Iowa because Simon married Hannah Marsh Jones on 09 Sep 1865 in Cedar County, Iowa, USA.
Then Fidelia married John F Shields on 21 Jun 1871 in Rome, Jones County, Iowa, USA.

By 1880, only she is listed as living with her youngest son in Kansas and by 1900 in Washington. I find no mention of her in the 1910 Census.

In 1854 Rome, Jones Co., IA, S. P. Benadum is listed with one male and five females.

In 1856 in Rome, S. P. and family are listed. S. P., b. OH, 30, merchant; F., b. OH, 26; A. b. OH, 11; E., b. IA, 9; M., b. IA, 7; L. b. IA, 3; G., b. IA, 1 and Stazy Padson, b. PA, clerk.

In 1860 in Rome, S. P. and family are listed. S. P., b. OH, 34, master blacksmith; Fidelia, b. VT, 32; Almira, b. OH, 15; Emily, b. IA, 13; Mary, b. IA, 11; Alice, b. IA, 7; George, b. IA, 5 and Clara b. IA, 3.

From 1862-1865 Simon and Fidelia parted somewhere between 1862-1865 because:

In 1903 in Anamosa, Iowa, Genealogy Obituary Index for Jones County, Iowa, the obituary for Almina Herrick (nee Burroughs), who died October 2, 1903, mentions Fidelia Shields: " . . . Besides her children, one sister, Mrs. Fidelia Shields, of Lincoln, Nebraska, three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren remain to mourn their irreparable loss."
Perhaps Fidelia had returned to Lincoln, Nebraska by 1903.

In the 1904 Mortuary Record: a Mrs. Fidelia Shields is listed in the Semi Weekly Reporter (Waterloo, Iowa) Tuesday, January 3, 1905: "Mortuary Record for Year 1904" as dying in March 1904.

In the 1910 in Tacoma Ward 7, Pierce Co., WA Wilfred O. and family appear but no Fidelia. Wilfred O., b. IA, 48, marr 22 yrs; Harriet J., b. WA, 43, had given birth to 5 children but 4 were alive in 1910; Villa, dau, b. OR, 20, single; Clyde, b. WA, 17; Bernadean, dau, b. WA, 14 and Theodorise (dau) b. WA, 5.

In 1920 Wilfred and part of his family are living in Lynden, Whatcom Co., WA. Wilfred, b. IA, 57, widower, Methodist minister; Theodore, dau, b. WA, 15 and Jan Vanasselt, mother law, b. OH, 86, widow. [Wilfred married Harriet J Van Asselt in about 1887. She was the daughter of Henry Van Asselt and Jane Maple who married in about 1852. Henry Van Asselt was one of the first settlers in Seattle; see http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/45552_vanasselt06.shtml ]

I also found a separate entry for an Adelia Burroughs who d. Feb. 8, 1909, Toledo, OH, Lucas Co, record #8.747. I'd investigate this since it was from an index & we know how garbled they can get. Also, Fidelia once before used the name of Adelia.

One item we ran across in Anamosa, Iowa, Genealogy Obituary Index for Jones County, Iowa, mentions Fidelia Shields. The obituary is for Mrs. Almina Herrick. I do not have it saved electronically, so I'll just quote parts of it here:
"Almina Burroughs Herrick, was born at Syracuse, New York, October 22nd, 1825, and died at her home in Olin, Iowa, October 2, 1903, of bronchial asthma and heart failure, aged 77 years, 11 months and 10 days.
"She lived in the state of New York until six years of age, when with her parents she moved to Canal Winchester, Ohio, where she spend her youthful days, and where she was married to Jason Darrington Herrick, in October 1843, at the age of 19."
[There is a long write-up of her children, husband's activities, and Mrs. Herrick's life.]
" . . . Besides her children, one sister, Mrs. Fidelia Shields, of Lincoln, Nebraska, three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren remain to mourn their irreparable loss."
[Then there is a long tribute to Mrs. Herrick and a detailed description of her funeral.]

I have uploaded an update to my Newtown BURROUGHS report. The following changes were made:

1) John BURROUGHS of Upper Makefield Tp, Bucks Co, PA, was put back as a son of John BURROUGHS of Trenton (Ewing) Tp, Hunterdon Co, NJ. Junior was not listed in Senior's will, but there is a lot of circumstantial evidence that they were father and son.

2) The Jemima BURROUGHS who married David BLACKWELL was incorrectly placed on the family tree.

3) A daughter was discovered for James5 (James4, James3, Jeremiah2, John1).

Burroughs From Rede, Suffolk, England

I am a direct descendant of Thomas Burroughs born 1660, Rede, Suffolk.

Our family for sometime have been trying to find a link to the American Burroughs family.

We know the Wickhambrook Burroughs are in America and as Wickhambrook is only 5 miles from Rede it is too much of a coincidence that we are not related. Cannot find any Parish records that link the Rede's to Wickhambrook.

Has anyone found a connection?

There doesn't appear to be a connection here. My Rosa married my grandfather L D Blackstone in Tallapoosa County in 1895, but they lived their entire married life in Lafayette in Chambers County. Rosa died of TB in 1911.

My family tree is from John C. Burroughs Sr. to Elliup (or Eli) Burroughs, brother to John Cooper Burroughs Jr. Eli Burroughs (b. 1822) had a son Jacob Tilman Burroughs (b. 1852). Jacob had a daughter Sudie Virginia Burroughs born 1878(my grandmother). She married John Clifton Nix of Tuscaloosa. Their 8th and last child was my father Charles Simmie Nix (b. 1917)in Buhl, Alabama. My dad married Ernestine Standifer of Gadsden, Alabama and that is where I was born and raised. I am Tina (Nix) Near. Nice to meet you.

I'm trying to research an Elvada (sometimes referred to as Vada) Burroughs. She was also from Tallapoosa County, AL. I wonder if they were related. She married Dr. Michael Joseph Banks in 1895 (this was his second marriage) but only lived a few years after they married and she past away. He later married my great grandmother. I wish I could find more information about the Burroughs family, but there doesn't seems to be much on the web. -Kristi
