I'm sorry but I don't have any more information on Dorcas, but her brother William is a direct decendant of mine, through his uncle Samuel Slack. If I come across any other information on either Dorcas or Thomas I will send it on to you. My e-mail is bigbearonthehill@yahoo.com.
I have information from my sisters genealogy papers listing Dorcas Slack b. Aug. 6, 1718 in Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts marrying Thomas Barrows on 14 Oct 1740 in Rockingham, Windham, Massachusetts. Thomas was born in 1717 in Attleboro. With much of th information being similar I would guess that Barrows is the Burrus you are looking for.

To Kip Burrus: Your uncle may be my grandfather, Carl Burrus, who was a Disciple of Christ Minister in Vandalia and Centralia, Missouri and who died, I think, in 1945. I never met him and my mother didn't know a lot about his family but it seems he might have had relatives in Oklahoma. I am the only one left in the family and wish I could tell you more, but you might want to do an Internet search on those two towns and see if you can locate him. His name was Carl Allen(Alan?) Burrus and he went by the name of C Allen Burrus much of the time.

Phyllis,
I have been searching for ancestors of Thomas Burrus without any luck. I do have a good amount of his decendents though. It looks to me that Thomas married Nancy in the Haystack Twp. of Surry Co., NC
I am just not finding much on Burrus on Smyth Co.
I haven't been able verify a father of Thomas Burrus yet. As for Nancy Tucker, I have been trying to find verification that she was the grandaughter of James Tucker and Mary Garner. I think she might have been the daughter of one of their sons. I may be on the wrong track, but I feel there is a connection there somewhere. Phyllis Dickerson

BURRUS & MARTIN Families - VA, TN, MO & others,,,,,

Can anyone help with these families to clarify & correct family records?

My BURRUS/Burris & MARTIN family members originate in the NC, TN, VA, areas; later relocated to MO aprx. 1830 - 1840 time frames; possibly earlier. Not sure of migration route prior to locating in MO areas; other than TN, VA, possibly AR or others.

My "Isaac BURRUS", born Bet. 1770-1780, Albermarle County, VA, and "Nancy (Martin) BURRUS", were 'Parents' of "Frances An/Ann BURRUS/Burris", born aprx. 1811, Overton County, TN.

Note - Two (2) Marriages for Isaac Burrus/Burris are:

Marriage #1 - "Isaac Burrus/Burris", born 1770-1780, VA, married 1892, in Albermarle County, VA, to "Frances Ferguson", born 1766, Cumberland County, KY; daughter of William Ferguson. Two daughters born to this union; one died early years in a home fire. Isaac Burrus/Burris signed papers to have "Thomas Burrus/Burris", as Exec. of Estate to handle affairs to collect inheritance of daughter since he was living in another state - it is presumed this was during the time after the death of his 1st wife, Frances Ferguson.

Marriage #2 - "Isaac Burrus/Burris", born 1770-1780, VA, married 1810, in Overton County, TN, to "Nancy Martin". There were apprx. 11-children born to this union.

1. "Frances An/Ann Burrus/Burris", born 1811, Overton County, TN, married "James Martin", born apprx. 1800/1805, NC - in County which later became part of TN - thought to possibly be a part of Smith County before it became part of TN; not sure of the 'original county name while part of NC'. Date & location of 'their marriage unknown'; possibly in TN, since their first 2-children are shown as being born in TN, on the 1850 Census, Newton County, MO, as such. This family arrived in S.W. MO area as early as 1830, according to MO Census Records. The remainder of their children were born in MO, according to later Census Records.

"James Martin" born 1800/1805, NC, is last found on the MO Census Records in 1860; "Frances An/Ann (Burrus/Burris) Martin, born 1811, TN, is last found on the MO 1870 Census Records.

Can anyone help with information on these families - i.e. 'their Marriage Date & Location; the 'Parents' of "James Martin" who was born in NC/TN? I have their children & family members from MO Census Records 1830-1870.

Please contact me to help "clarify & correct family records" on these family members. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!

Feel free to contact me via this site, or directly at:
JCrouch94@sbcglobal.net

Hello, I am doing some research on behalf of my sisters who are married to descendants of Miley/Mills/Miles BURRUS a Shoemaker from North Carolina born circa 1814.

Miley appears in Hertford, NC in 1850 & in Dobson, Surry NC in 1860. He was married to a woman named Margaret (aka Mary) J. born ca. 1817 in NC. Their children are somewhat confusing to me. I do know for sure that they had a son named Thomas born in December of 1851 in Hertford, NC. Thomas married a woman who was born in Missouri but they do not show up on any census together; her name may have been Emmaline.

I have been unable to locate Thomas in the 1870 or 1880 census. He next appears [after 1860] in 1900 in Marion, Arkansas as a 48 year old widow with nine children. All of the children were born in Arkansas.

By 1910 Thomas Burrus has moved his family to Mitchell, TX. Thomas had a daughter named Mary A. BURRUS born in April 1900 in Ark.

Mary A. BURRUS married a Joseph Paul JOBB of Lavaca, TX. My sister's are married to Joseph and Mary's grandson's.

Thank you for any help you can offer to me.

I am searching for information about Swaney Burrus. He is listed in the Henry county Tennessee census in 1850. My GGrandfather was Swanee Burrus Baxter, never could figure out where that name came from, but now think he was named after this Swaney Burrus. My Swanee Burrus Baxter was born 1841 in Henry county Tennessee and then the family moved to Weakley County TN,Swanee later moved to Ozark County MO. Swanee's parents were Joseph Baxter and Nancy L. Hammack or Hammock. Some of Joseph and Nancy's children were in Calloway county KY. Do you know af a connection between these families?
Thanks Bessie

I am also looking for info about Dare County Burruses.

Edward Brower Burrus born abt 1875 in Hatteras and died 21 Mar 1951 in Elizabeth City, NC. He was married to Ethel Roper. She was a member of the Elizabeth City Coast Guard when she died in 1965.

Ed Burrus is somehow related to the Ethelburt Burrus who was an assistant lightkeeper of the Hatteras lighthouse from 1876-1878.
Harlan J Burrus of North Liberty IN killed in South Pacific WWII

Harlan Burrus of North Liberty, Indiana was declared dead January 11, 1946, after being missing for a considerable length of time. His name appears on the “Tablets of the Missing” at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. We are seeking information regarding his military and civilian life.

I am a retired Hoosier from Madison County residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. We are seeking family and military information about servicemen from your county killed in the South Pacific during World War II. There are 17,206 Americans buried here and thousands more that are missing or buried at sea and are honored on the “Tablets of the Missing”. Please visit our website to see the beautiful memorial located in Manila, Philippines.

http://fizkid.tripod.com/

My wife and I visited the cemetery as visitors and left with a mission in our heart. We have been taking photographs of the graves of the Indiana servicemen buried here and have been uniting them (at no charge) with their family members in Indiana and across the United States. To receive the photo of your family member, neighbor or friend all you need is a working email address. We do not send them to regular mailing addresses due to the costs. Please help us find the families of the men that might still be living. Our project is only successful because of teamwork and your contributions are noted on our website. If you wish to help us we will be pleased to add your name to our ACKNOWLEDGMENT page on the website. The obituaries usually did not appear till to three months after the death date.

If you are not a genealogist you can help by just picking up the telephone directory and find someone with the same last name and give them a call. It has worked many times for us.

Zenas5@yahoo.com

Sincerely,

Dave and Apple Dwiggins
San Pablo City, Philippines

Urla Rue Burrus/David Henry Burrus?

I'm looking for information regarding my great-grandmother's family. I've been hitting dead end after dead end and am starting to wonder if they actually existed.

I know very little except that Urla was born in the late 1880s in Georgia or possibly Alabama. She attended a teaching college at some point in Georgia. She married a Frederick Dennard in 1910. We believe her father's name was David Henry Burrus who married a Clara Elizabeth Brooks.

Please help!
